What happens when a Columbia-trained psychologist, working with high performers, cannot find a way to cure his own depression? He thinks of suicide. He wishes the train would take him out as he crosses the tracks some day driving home from work. And then one day doing his morning journaling, he asks a couple of different questions and a new answer lands in his lap. It gives him a way to move forward while also getting better outcomes for his patients. Why is psychotherapy so inept in actually helping people feel better? What part does helping us feel our emotions have in healing? Why didn't understanding his own trauma history help Ardeshir feel any better, and what did? Learn how the Emotional Bill of Rights may help heal your emotional distress. Hear about Ardeshir's journey to discovering that he was depressed and how that led to giving up his profession in the way he was trained to work. They're gonna happen pretty quick. And when they do, you're not going to be silent about it.” “Success is pushing your own limit, going further than your own fears and limitations.” “Great leaders are connectors. Somehow, we've seen great leaders have a general pattern: they take charge, they rally the troops. No, great leaders create connections, help people around connect with each other, and know the gift of each person, bringing everybody up to have the conversations that matter.” “Great leaders are great dinner hosts.” “In life, we all face punches—some expected, some unforeseen. Often, it's the tragedies of missed opportunities, the ‘what could have been,' that weigh heaviest. These unrealized moments make us end up compromising to deal with life and death. Mental illness is the signal of compromise that we have to take to survive. At its core, there's nothing wrong with you.” “The journey of healing is to realize you were okay all along. You were not attended to, you were not loved the way you needed to be. You are not guided, you are not supported. The journey of healing is the journey of coming home to the base, to the essence you are, and build the person you were meant to be.” BOOK MENTIONED: The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk, M.D (https://a.co/d/9nM6GuV) USEFUL RESOURCES: https://ardeshirmehran.com https://www.instagram.com/dr.ardeshirmehran/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/ardeshir-mehran-ph-d-a3457/ https://www.youtube.com/@ArdeshirMehranPhD You Are Not Depressed, You Are Un-Finished: Use Feelings of Depression and Anxiety to Fuel a Soaring Life https://a.co/d/7Sxp61q CONNECT WITH JOHN Website - https://thejohnhulen.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnhulen Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/johnhulen Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/johnhulen LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhulen YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLX_NchE8lisC4NL2GciIWA EPISODE CREDITS Intro and Outro music provided by Jeff Scheetz - https://jeffscheetz.com/

You Are Un-Finished: Use Feelings of Depression and Anxiety to Fuel a Soaring Life by Ardeshir Mehran Most Influential Person I draw inspiration from a biologist colleague. She inspires my mindfulness journey with her graceful, mindful presence, and the way she observes her surroundings with poise. Effect on Emotions I'd like to share how mindfulness is currently transforming my emotional responses. Mindfulness allows me to navigate my emotions by simply observing them without passing judgment. In addition, this approach empowers me to address my emotions with a heightened level of awareness and balance. Instead of reacting impulsively, I can now make deliberate and conscious choices in how I respond to different emotional states. Moreover, this transformation has significantly improved my relationship with my feelings, fostering a healthier and more mindful connection. Thoughts on Breathing The essence of breathing lies in awareness. People often ask how to breathe properly, and my response is that you're already doing it; you're just not conscious of it. Specifically, notice your breath as you sit. There's no need to force it or attempt to take in more oxygen. Your body instinctively regulates the breath based on your activity level. It is essential to sit with an upright posture, allowing your diaphragm to expand, giving your lungs room to move. Simply observe your breath's natural cycle: when it begins, continues, and ends, and the same for the exhale. This mindful awareness of the breath's rhythmic cycle is a profound practice. It seemed to stem from my affinity for books, my reserved nature, and my slender physique. The bullying often led to torn clothes and financial strain for my parents. I distinctly remember a conversation with my mother where she imparted a valuable lesson. She encouraged me not to run from fear but to confront it head-on. Though I didn't fully comprehend her advice at the time, I decided to apply it during my next encounter with the bullies. I stood my ground, even as they pushed me around, resulting in another beating. But something remarkable happened after that. The bullies ceased their torment and started spending time with me, discovering my extensive knowledge of scientific stories. This experience taught me not to let fear control me and to acknowledge the goodness within myself. I also gained insight into the difficult backgrounds of those bullies, leading me to approach them with compassion and respect. This lesson underscored the importance of facing fear and discovering inner strength. On this episode of Transform Talks, Ardeshir Mehran, Founder and Principal at Human Work Studio, joins host Maria Villablanca. Maria and Ardeshir dive into mental wellness or, as Ardeshir sees it, emotional wellness. Mental implies the mind or only the brain. In reality, mental health and mental illnesses are composed of feelings that radiate throughout the body. Anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder are a few examples of mental illnesses. All of them impact more than just the mind. Ardeshir illuminates the subject that is often taboo to discuss or even admit in leadership positions in the business world. Depression fought is actually a gift, he says. He addresses the issue or common thought of having too many problems or fires going on in life to consider emotional wellness. Ardeshir breaks down this mirage of complacency around your body's health. Your mind should follow your body's messages rather than the other way around. Listen to the entire episode to learn more and hear Ardeshir walk through an exercise to determine if you have anxiety. References: Human Work Studio Body Keeps the Score
