You Are Un-Finished: Use Feelings of Depression and Anxiety to Fuel a Soaring Life by Ardeshir Mehran Most Influential Person I draw inspiration from a biologist colleague. She inspires my mindfulness journey with her graceful, mindful presence, and the way she observes her surroundings with poise. Effect on Emotions I'd like to share how mindfulness is currently transforming my emotional responses. Mindfulness allows me to navigate my emotions by simply observing them without passing judgment. In addition, this approach empowers me to address my emotions with a heightened level of awareness and balance. Instead of reacting impulsively, I can now make deliberate and conscious choices in how I respond to different emotional states. Moreover, this transformation has significantly improved my relationship with my feelings, fostering a healthier and more mindful connection. Thoughts on Breathing The essence of breathing lies in awareness. People often ask how to breathe properly, and my response is that you're already doing it; you're just not conscious of it. Specifically, notice your breath as you sit. There's no need to force it or attempt to take in more oxygen. Your body instinctively regulates the breath based on your activity level. It is essential to sit with an upright posture, allowing your diaphragm to expand, giving your lungs room to move. Simply observe your breath's natural cycle: when it begins, continues, and ends, and the same for the exhale. This mindful awareness of the breath's rhythmic cycle is a profound practice. Levine Ph.D. Book: The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness & Healing in a Toxic Culture by Gabor Mate App: Rain Rain App Bullying Story During my childhood, particularly throughout my primary school years, I found myself a frequent target for bullies. It seemed to stem from my affinity for books, my reserved nature, and my slender physique. The bullying often led to torn clothes and financial strain for my parents. I distinctly remember a conversation with my mother where she imparted a valuable lesson. She encouraged me not to run from fear but to confront it head-on. Though I didn't fully comprehend her advice at the time, I decided to apply it during my next encounter with the bullies. I stood my ground, even as they pushed me around, resulting in another beating. But something remarkable happened after that. The bullies ceased their torment and started spending time with me, discovering my extensive knowledge of scientific stories. This experience taught me not to let fear control me and to acknowledge the goodness within myself. I also gained insight into the difficult backgrounds of those bullies, leading me to approach them with compassion and respect. This lesson underscored the importance of facing fear and discovering inner strength. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to make a short video about my struggles with depression and how I've dealt with it. I've never shared this publicly and keep my mental health struggles to myself and family and close friends. But I figured if I made a video explaining what worked for me, and it helped one person, that it was worth putting this out there. I first experienced clinical depression in high school and its persisted my entire adult life. I've attempted suicide, I've struggled with addiction, I've been in a mental hospital, I've seen a ton of psychiatrists, tried every antidepressant, etc. And it took forever to really start making progress. I wanted to share what I've learned on my journey in the hopes that it will help you recover quicker. I have to say that my views are my own and I am not a doctor. I review 8 specific science-supported protocols for treating and avoiding depression, including EPA fatty acids (which have been shown to rival certain prescription treatments), how exercise protects against depression, studies of creatine, adjusting dopamine balance and more. I also discuss the results of ongoing clinical trials for ketamine and psilocybin for depression, how these compounds work and finally, I review how ketogenic diets can help in certain cases of depression, especially treatment-resistant major depression.   Thank you to our sponsors: InsideTracker - https://www.insidetracker.com/huberman Athletic Greens - https://www.athleticgreens.com/huberman Belcampo - https://www.belcampo.com/huberman -- code "huberman"   Our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/andrewhuberman   Supplements from Thorne: http://www.thorne.com/u/huberman   Social: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/hubermanlab Twitter - https://twitter.com/hubermanlab Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/hubermanlab Website - https://hubermanlab.com Join Newsletter - https://hubermanlab.com/neural-network   Links: Review of EPAs for the Treatment of Depression - https://bit.ly/2Wl15ti  Review of Creatine for the Treatment of Depression - https://www.mdpi.com/520864  Recent Study on the Clinical Use of Psilocybin for Treatment of Depression - https://bit.ly/3sFSGMM    Timestamps: 00:00:00 Mood Disorders & Maintaining Mental Health (Protocol 1) 00:07:10 Sponsors 00:11:15 Major Depression 00:18:40 “Anti-Self” Confabulation 00:21:42 Autonomic (Vegetative) Symptoms of Depression 00:26:58 Norepinephrine, Dopamine & Serotonin 00:31:50 SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, etc.): Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors 00:37:00 Epinephrine/Motor Functions, Dopamine/Motivation & Craving, Serotonin/Emotions 00:39:33 Physical & Emotional Pain are Linked: Substance P 00:41:50 Hormones & Depression: Thyroid & Cortisol  00:46:50 Genetic Susceptibility to Depression: Impact of Stress  00:50:50 Understanding Biological Mechanism Is Key: Recipes versus Skills 00:52:50 Tools for Dealing with Depression: Logic & Implementation (Protocol 2) 00:56:25 Brain Inflammation & Mental State: Cytokines, Prostaglandins, etc. 00:59:20 Protocol 3: Essential Fatty Acids (Omega-3, EPAs: Eicosapentaenoic Acid)* 01:02:50 How EPAs Help Offset Depression: Serotonin Synthesis, Kynurenine, Quinolinic Acid 01:05:25 Protocol 4: How Exercise Offsets Depression  01:11:44 Protocol 5: Creatine Monohydrate, Forebrain Function & NMDA receptors* 01:20:30 Protocol 6*: Ketamine, PCP (*Prescription-Only), & NMDA-Receptor Function 01:33:08 Protocol 7*: Psychedelics (*In Clinical Trials) for Major Depression: Psilocybin* 01:47:00 Protocol 8: Ketogenic Diet, GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) 01:54:50 Summary of Protocols Covered 02:00:10 Support & Additional Resources   Please note that The Huberman Lab Podcast is distinct from Dr. Huberman's teaching and research roles at Stanford University School of Medicine. Here are 5 of my favorite Big Ideas from The Second Mountain by David Brooks. Hope you enjoy! David Brooks is one of the nations’ leading writers and commentators. He is an op-ed columnist for the New York Times and appears regularly on PBS NewsHour and Meet the Press. I loved his book The Road to Character. I loved this one even more. David tells us there are two mountains: The first mountain? That’s what society tells us we should pursue: all the normal trappings of success. The second mountain? That’s where the magic (and joy!) exists: where we move beyond ourselves and COMMIT (important word for this book!) to giving ourselves most fully to something bigger than ourselves. David identifies four potential commitments: to our families, to our vocations, to our faith/philosophy of life and to our communities. Ultimately, the book is intended to be a guide to the ULTIMATE quest in life: “The Quest for a Moral Life.” Get The Second Mountain on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Second-Mountain-David-Brooks/dp/0812993268 Learn more about David Brooks: https://www.optimize.me/authors/david-brooks/ ► RELATED RESOURCES: Big Idea 1: HAPPINESS VS. Fighting Feelings, Beating Anxiety, Conquering Depression. - Why all these expressions aren't helpful! Whenever we resist our feelings, we actually give them more power over us and usually end up suffering more. Fighting feelings, beating anxiety, conquering depression - all very tough adversarial phrases that conjure up our emotions as some enemy to be beaten on the battlefield. What this implies is that if our feelings get the best of us (or even if we just feel them intensely) it's because we're somehow weak and unable to fight them off. This adds an element of shame on top of our anxiety, lack of motivation or general uneasiness. Shame keeps our feelings hidden, and they grow in the dark. So we're less likely to be vulnerable with someone we can trust, take that act of courage and admit we need help or someone to talk to. Feelings, while often unpleasant and sometimes overwhelming, are not to be fought. Whatever you resist grows in intensity. Feelings are signals that some need isn't being met. If we co-opt them as signals for our benefit, we're no longer suffering from them but working with them to make our lives better.

Our guest on this episode of the Early Accountability Podcast is Kina Fields, a massage therapist, trainer, and artist. Kina has struggled with anxiety and depression since childhood, but only in the past couple of years began seeking help for the resulting addictions and mental health issues, and she is here to tell us more about the role that art played in her journey as well as provide some needed advice to listeners who might also be struggling. After battling alcohol and drug addiction in an attempt to self-medicate the anxiety that took over her life and surviving multiple suicide attempts, Kina sought help through a group therapy program. In combination with her self-expression through her art, this therapy program has put her back on solid footing and given her the perspective that she desperately needed to realize that depression is real, but no one is alone in their struggle. She also encourages listeners to think about everyone in their lives who need them and the positive change that only they can bring to the world by making the best version of themselves the priority of their daily life. Kina has found freedom in creating her art and she hopes that any listeners in Atlanta can come out to her art show on March 16-17th. Topics Covered in this Episode: -How Kina uses art in her battle with depression and anxiety -Kina’s advice to others struggling with addiction or their mental health -How to react if you relapse into your old ways
