We've got a real treat for you! A man who's the Swiss Army knife of talent, Jonathan Broke. Jonathan is a quick-witted improvisational actor who can turn any seemingly dull suggestion into an on-the-spot comedy sketch! But Jonathan isn't all fun and games. He's also a legit "coaching psychologist." That's a professional who uses psychological theories and training to help people and groups improve their performance and well-being. So, Jonathan is a master of the mind, both on and offstage. He's like if Zigmund Freud and John Cleese had a love child and that child could impersonate both of his parents. In this episode Todd Kramer and Jay Reum explore the many layers of this one-of-a-kind performer—what drives him, how he taps into that creative well, (he's not-so-secret poshness) and maybe, just maybe, get some tips on how to survive those high-pressure moments in life. Whenever we have difficult times, it is tempting to ask "why"?But the question shouldn't be "why is this happening?", the question should be "why am I responding/behaving the way I am?"
What is the difference between a psychiatrist, a counsellor, and a therapist? If you are feeling anxious, which one should you go to? Is there a hierarchy between the three? These can be tough questions for some. Mental Health practitioners are helping us shed the stigma around these 'awkward' conversations, and yet there is a long way ahead. Divija Bhasin aka awkwardgoat joins Dr Tanaya in this latest episode to share her experiences of being a counselling psychologist. What sticks out from the conversation is that be it your gham-e-dil or kamar-ka-dard, they can all have an impact on your mental health. Side note - Have you liked/followed this podcast yet? No? Please do. It helps us reach out to you directly the next time an episode drops. Promise.

Episode Seven. Luke Pryor, Ultra Distance Trail Runner, Clinical & Performance Pyschologist, FKT Challenger & Tiny Home Dweller. This episode is a really interesting catch up with Luke Pryor, talking all things endurance, psychology and running as a metaphor for life. Luke shares his origin story with us and we find out how he came from a childhood on an 100 acre farm in Victoria to now, living in a newly built “tiny home” in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. As a Clinical and Performance Psychologist, Luke sheds light on some fundamentals of Performance Psychology and their application for athletes and adventurers alike, including the practices of Mindfulness, Gratitude and Compassion. Luke also shares his plans to set a Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the 210km Goldfields Track and we dig into the “why” of these enormous endurance challenges. Unfortunately we were again hit by some distracting popping in the background of the audio and we hope you persevere and listen to this, as Luke shares some really valuable insights. He references the book “Self Compassion” by Kristin Neff.

Most parents can agree that their number one goal is to care for and raise good kids. Today on the podcast, Jamie and Guy talk with Dr. Aaron Cannon, Ph.D. in Psychology, about when parenting 'goes bad' and how to avoid common parenting mistakes. Drawing on his years of experience working with inmates in the California Department of Corrections (prison), to raising his own two children, Dr. Cannon discusses some of the most important things he has learned about parenting. He stresses the importance of allowing our kids to make mistakes, apologizing when we make mistakes, being consistent in how we parent, and allowing our kids the opportunity and support to find out who they are, and who they hope to become ❤️ We hope you enjoyed today's episode - if you did please take a minute to subscribe and leave a review on Apple Podcasts:) Thanks so much! For more information on Dr. Cannon's book, Education and Empowerment for the Twenty-first Century Parent: A Practical Guide For Raising Healthy and Well-Adjusted Teens, click here: https://amzn.to/2OcfRyrJoin us on Facebook :https://www.facebook.com/thedavenportpodcast/ Follow us on Instagram:@thedavenportpodcastAbout Jamie and Guy:Jamie Pyatt LCSW is a mom, avid beach lover, exercise enthusiast, and a licensed clinical therapist with over 20 yrs of experience. In Episode 112 I sit down with Harvard-educated Pyschologist and best selling author Melanie Joy to discuss how we form our beliefs about food and how vegans can have healthier, more productive, conversations with non-vegans. An episode that I believe will be highly instructive regardless of the diet that you follow. In this episode we cover:Melanie's personal journey to studying Pyschology at Harvard and writing her award winning book "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism" Why our food choices matterThe carnism ideaologyCarnistic defense systems and the three N's: 'Normal, Natural and NecessaryEffective vegan advocacy: how to communicate better as a veganShame vs guiltThe idea of thinking about process vs content when communicating with someone who holds a different opinion to youWhy the debate format sets us up to failHow you can be a part of the solutionWhat a 'vegan ally' isThe idea of watering the right seedsand much moreWhile my episodes usually focus on nutrition science I found this exchange fascinating and believe many of the learnings hold true for our communication in general, whether that be related to food choices and the exploitation of animals or not. My plan is to extend this into a 3-4 part series, with Melanie to return and another high profile vegan activist in the coming months so we can continue exploring this topic together.Resources:The 3 minute video on Carnism created by Melanie and her team Beyond Carnism that I referred to in this conversationConnect with Melanie on Instagram @beyondcarnismCarnism.org websiteMelanie's Book Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism, 10th Anniversary EditionThe Vegan Matrix - another book written by Melanie exploring what she believes is a serious problem with the vegan movement: unexamined privilege.Melanie's 2015 TedX Talk Toward Rational, Authentic Food ChoicesMy Book:My book is coming out early 2021 published with Penguin - I cannot wait to share with you. In this episode I have a great conversation with Jay Hobbs on the value of hiring for neurodiversity and some of the potential barriers and hurdles that existing recruitment practices put in place.Jay has an extensive background in working with individuals and families of autistic people. Jay has also spent a considerable amount of time working on various employment programs and organisations to support the recruitment and employment of autistic job seekers. There are many talented individuals out there who are both keen to work and highly capable. If it weren’t for the trouble they often face with interviews and selection processes, the vast majority would be working and delivering value. If you’re likely to be around Brisbane in May or could make it there, I highly recommend you check out the 2019 conference - link below. If you’d like some simple tips on better interviews for neurodiverse candidates, grab a copy of your free guide.Links:Thriving Now Conference, 31 May 2019 in BrisbaneJay Hobbs email address: jamonhobbs@gmail.comJay Hobbs, LinkedIn
