After watching the Twin Towers collapse on 9/11, Noah Galloway immediately enlisted in the military at just 21 years old. Three months into his second deployment, an IED exploded, ripping apart the Humvee he was driving and nearly ending his life. He awoke five days later to find both his left arm and left leg amputated. After he finally returned home, he was overcome by a deep depression. When his marriage dissolved and he spent 10 days in county jail for a DUI, he knew he had to turn his life around. Determined to be a good role model for his children, he slowly clawed his way out of depression and into the gym to begin his mental and physical rebirth. His grit and determination began to attract media attention, landing him on the cover of Men's Health Magazine and multiple TV appearances on Ellen, The Today Show, and the military-inspired competition series American Grit. He also earned third place on Dancing With the Stars. This week on the Lead to Win Podcast, we visit with Noah Galloway. Sergeant Noah Galloway is the epitome of valor and resilience. A Purple Heart recipient and double amputee–he decided to join the military as a result of the September 11th terror attacks. Noah's incredible journey to mental and physical wellness is one that he shares in his memoir titled Living with No Excuses; the Remarkable Rebirth of an American Soldier. Those words, “No Excuses,” became Noah's mantra, as he rose out of a post-traumatic depression via his reinvigorating passion for fitness. His victories at what one would expect him to see as impossible competition and obstacle races would find Noah gaining a national spotlight. He became the first veteran and amputee to be featured on the cover of Men's Health magazine earning their “Ultimate Guy” title in 2014 and landing him on the Ellen show. Noah also became a finalist on the hit ABC show Dancing with the Stars and would win the debut season of FOX's American Grit. As a result of the honorable position he gained with a national platform, Noah wanted to give back, so he launched the No Excuses Charitable Fund, which raises money and awareness for organizations that support causes which mean the most to Noah. Now, as a fitness enthusiast and motivational public speaker, Noah shares his story to encourage audiences and his fans to embrace the “No Excuses” lifestyle on their way to an enhanced mental and physical wellness. Takeaways: Overcoming challenges and finding strength is a continuous journey. Taking ownership and leading from within are essential qualities of a leader. A positive attitude is a choice that can help overcome obstacles. Excuses are a way of avoiding responsibility. Finding a purpose and something bigger than fear can motivate and inspire. Failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. Adapting to change and finding purpose are important in life. John Suzuki is a Japanese American who stumbled upon the story of Japanese internment camps during World War II. It was a story that rattled him. The camps were created when President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the United States Army to round up and detain anyone who was at least 1/16 of Japanese ancestry. The camps were primitive, without running water or insulation. Summer temperatures soared over 100 degrees and winters were bitingly cold. Minidoka was one of these camps. It was at Minidoka that John met the survivors of the camps and discovered a billboard honoring the 1,000 Japanese Americans who volunteered to fight for the U.S. army, the very entity that had detained them in these camps. This discovery sent him on a mission to learn even more. Follow Bump on:
Now retired from his corporate roles, my guest is on his next journey. With 60 years of learning and earning, he now turns to returning and giving back. As a new author, John fulfilled a 15 year promise to publish a true story called "American Grit - From a Japanese American Concentration Camp Rises an American War Hero."American Grit is a compelling narrative about racial identity, resilience, and heroism. The book explores the dark chapter in American history following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066, when Japanese American citizens were incarcerated in U.S. concentration camps during World War II.https://johnsuzuki.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

Most people are at least vaguely familiar with the inhuman treatment that happened inside concentration camps during World War 2. The thing most people have never heard, is that Germany was not the only country that engaged in collecting and imprisoning specific ethnic groups. In fact, the one we are talking about today was claiming to be the most freedom forward place on Earth while also building these camps in bleached desert wastelands where the weather alone could kill... The United States of America. My guest today is John Suzuki. John is the author of the Amazon best selling book "American Grit". It details stories from a shameful time in American history, and the incredible people that rose to greatness in spite of it. John does a great job breaking down the details and easily secured a place as one of my favorite guests, with a fascinating topic that for obvious reasons has been largely buried. This covers everything from the aftershock of Pearl Harbor, to Executive Order 9066, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, war heroes like Shiro Kashino, and what life was like for those who were imprisoned after the fighting was all over. ( Www.JohnSuzuki.Com ) For those that listened last episode, you'll know I'm padding out the new studio space and still had a little echo when I did this interview. But it should be all better in the future, and honestly isn't that noticeable even to me on this one. Let's learn America's dirty secret. And thank you for listening. I really think it's time we start talking about these stains on our collective pasts. Only by being fully aware of who we are and what we've done, will we be able to build a brighter future with a fuller picture. Make sure you're doing your part to at least make others aware and give them the chance to learn through interviews like this one. August has continued moving forward despite my pleas for it to stop, so we've got updated rankings: 1. The United States, now led by New Jersey, Michigan and Oregon. 2. Ontario, Canada. Which is how I'll be refering to it until we get some competition again. 3. The United Kingdom, with England passing Scotland for the top spot. 4. Australia, led back to the top 5 by New South Wales. 5. Columbia! Welcome to the top 5 for the first time Columbia! That's it for this week! Depression and struggles Being the leader of my family Being stuck in denial What else am I interested in right now? Being open to your soft side "In leadership and in life, everything starts in the middle and it makes life easier" "There are things that men innately want to do but we are also designed to be fathers" "There's nothing wrong with tapping into that softer side because the tough side cannot exist without having a softer side" About Noah: Sergeant Noah Galloway, a Birmingham, Alabama native, is the personification of valor and resilience. On the road to recovery of his physical and mental health, Noah began to snowball attention on social media, which led to him completing Tough Mudder races, landing the cover of Men's Health Magazine and starring in many popular TV shows such as Dancing with the Stars, American Grit, Ellen, GMA, True Life, CMT Country Music Awards, The View, and many others. In 2016, Noah became an author with the release of his incredible book titled "Living with No Excuses." He's a motivational speaker and philanthropist, raising money through his No Excuses Charitable Fund, which provides resources to a various charitable organizations, and he is a true American hero. One thing I really appreciate about Noah is his outlook on life. He entire life story is rooted in service to others and even during the times when he's struggled the most, he's never stoped pouring into and caring for other people first. But above it all, he is an incredible man, husband, and father, and it's an honor to share this conversation with a guy I'm now honored to call a friend. Discussion Points: Why Noah joined the army Noah reflects on his childhood Improving upon our parents performance One on one time with kids We don't yell in our house Saying sorry to our kids How we act is who they become Asking the question “why” to avoid lazy parenting Mental health, depression, anxiety We are the model for our kids Leadership applies to all parents Rebranding ourselves Rebuilding after Alabama tornados Marriage and the hammer story Noah's best marriage advice What Noah is the most proud of What Noah wants his kids to remember about him How we can help veterans Links: http://Noahgalloway.com (Noahgalloway.com) Instagram: @noahgallowayathlete Twitter: @noah_galloway
