On this Sunday Show with BizNews, United Independent Movement (UIM) President Neil De Beer describes how Libya's late dictatorial despot, Muammar al-Gaddafi, propped up the African National Congress (ANC) government - and predicts - now that it has been confirmed by former Treasurer-General Matthews Phosa - the current Libyan government will not get back millions still “missing” because “there's too much money that has to be paid back by too many people”. De Beer lambasts “gutless” President Cyril Ramaphosa's delayed response to the deaths of many children from contaminated snacks bought at Spaza shops - and warns that residents are taking the law into their own hands because of the “shortfall” of government action. De Beer tells CR: “You won't inspire me to lead an International Pillow Fighting team against Zimbabwe”. De Beer also slams Justice Minister Thembi Simelane for “seemingly dodging her own justice” over her VBS links. Meanwhile, he urges citizens to take advantage of a judgment that city officials can now be charged with dereliction of duty if their municipal areas are not kept up to standard. He also comments on the latest drama in the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), as well as the Zama-Zama humanitarian crisis.
Attention dear listeners – there's been a small change in scheduling as Aimen has unfortunately been incapacitated and unable to record our fourth episode on Sudan. But don't fret – Aimen is on the mend and will be back bringing us all more incredible insight and anecdotes about the Middle East very soon… So this week, we're returning to an episode from Season 3 about our old friend, Colonel Gaddafi of Libya. If you've been listening closely to this season, you'll remember that Gadaffi has been intimately involved in the 20th century story of Sudan, turning up to stir the pot and influence events there at every opportunity. So while you wait for our final episode on Sudan, we thought we'd bring you this episode as a brilliant refresher on another African country with vital links to Sudan, exploring how Gaddafi attempted to create his own revolutionary African Empire and the consequences across the region. Tú, oh rey, veías, y he aquí una grande imagen. Daniel 2:31 a 2:36 ¡HAGAMOS QUE NO SEA UN SUEÑO!
The ladies from Ask A Jew are back for their biannual visit. This time for the Jewish New Year! In this episode, we talk about the meaning of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and (since we apparently have to go over it again) why Orthodox Jews have to get their cars detailed before Passover. (It's true.) We also talk about mikvehs. Because you know you were wondering. If you only ever listen to one conversation about mikvehs, let it be this one. Most importantly, we revisit our evergreen topic: the world's hottest dictators, despots and garden-variety world leaders. Who was hotter? Stalin or Gadaffi? Is Bibi Netanyahu more your type? Or George H.W. Bush? In the bonus, I do a solocast where I answer AMA questions and share more of my existential crisis about how to pronounce my last name. Paying subscribers who have questions for me can put them in the comments.
Born to immigrant parents who fled Gadaffi's Libya in 1978, Moha Bensofia has been to hell and back. A self proclaimed “f*ck up' who turned bad into good, Moha joins Charlie Walk to explain a new piece of neurotech called Mendi. He not only shares his personal journey, but explains the benefits of getting more blood to the front of your brain as he recognized the power of this real-time medical-grade neurofeedback device to train people's brains, Mendi uses neurofeedback to provide visual feedback based on your brain activity. A headset measures the activity while you play a fun brain-training mobile game. The system uses fNIRS technology to measure blood flow and oxygenation in the pre-frontal cortex of the brain. The brain training game requires focus and calmness, which increases activity and control of your brain's pathway. Mendi was developed initially for victims of war and trauma, as well as people struggling with anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD. But, as you'll hear on this episode, everyone can benefit from Mendi while learning the lessons of Moha's journey to greatness. WALK THIS WAY with Moha Bensofia and never look back. Billy Carter, the beer-guzzling brother of President Jimmy Carter, became a serious headache for the White House when he was required to register as a foreign agent on 15th July, 1980, due to his dealings in Libya. Taking two large ‘loans' from Gadaffi's regime, viewed by the USA as a terrorist state, was perhaps Billy's most controversial moment while his brother was in office - but not necessarily the most embarrassing… In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly investigate the ‘wit and wisdom' Billy published for his fanbase; reveal the hard alcoholism that lurked behind much of his behaviour; and recall the appalling advertising campaign with which he attempted to turn around this very bad publicity… Further Reading: • ‘Billy Carter Files as Foreign Agent' (The Washington Post, 1980): https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1980/07/15/billy-carter-files-as-foreign-agent/3c9afef6-10cc-4832-881a-94117d111533/ • ‘Embarrassing Relatives Plague Presidents' (ABC News, 2003): https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/WolfFiles/story?id=90138&page=1w • ‘Mo Rocca on why Jimmy Carter's brother Billy Carter was misunderstood' (Salon, 2021): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzoGPJNRa1E For bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/Retrospectors We'll be back on Monday!
Questions emerge about the validity of the calls outside Belfast and attention is drawn elsewhere where parallel secret negotiations seem to be happening with the mysterious leader and main owner of Shergar, the Aga Khan. But nothing can stop the rumour mill from churning and there are reports Shergar is in Libya with Gadaffi and also that he has been taken by the New Orleans mafia. It becomes impossible to separate fact from fiction.
It is a bit difficult to be a true humanist, if there is such a thing, if you are always going on about how superior your particular culture is, but Europeans seem not to care very much about this issue. I was once again reminded of this contradictory fact when I came across a question on twitter which essentially asked, "do you feel safer criticizing Christianity than you do Islam?" (I say essentially because the actual question was in a silly multiple choice format that was so poorly prepared I do not feel like repeating it). I immediately responded by saying that I felt exactly the same criticizing any religion, that basically what the average person does is get a bit annoyed with you for not following their faith. I also stated that there are obviously always violent extremists in any religion (this statement can also be backed by extensive evidence documenting the human obsession with dying or "sacrificing" oneself for one's faith), but that the threat was pretty much the same across the board. Mind you that I would have said this is also true of any atheist as well. Sure, there may be a few outliers, a few bad apples in an overall good tree, but I could say that about any members of any faith, or lack of faith. It is quite ridiculous to think anything else really. Hamas in no way represents Muslims; Israel knows this just as well as I do. That is why the cease fire was reached after all. Hamas is a rogue government that came into power through a fluke and that constantly struggles to maintain power of their people. There is no great elation on either that Hamas is in power. But the problem of continuing to remove existing governments and rebuild new ones is real; such a task is costly and there is a currently a deadly pandemic still spreading throughout the world. Also, one always has to be cautious to strike at the right time, otherwise what is known as blow back occurs. The blow back from the removal of the Gaddafi administration, a violent horror of a government that tortured its citizens, is still being felt by the current Biden administration; the resentment from the removal of Gadaffi was, in fact, one of the factors that propelled Trump to victory in 2016. Trump's team of propagandist constantly hyper focused on the violent removal of the former dictator instead of detailing the brute force he used to govern, making the Obama administration look like a gang of tyrants. Blow back is real, and its consequences must be thoroughly considered before one rides off into the sunset looking for the next government to topple. In world politics you are dealing with billions of lives; tact is a requirement in such situations, not a luxury. It is fine to make whatever generalization you like about a particular people in your home, but doing so in front of large audiences only causes more needless fighting and bickering. The person who asked the aforementioned question proceeded to assume that I was saying it was just as dangerous to be an atheist in a Christian nation, as it was in Muslim nation. Again, this question stated nothing about countries of origin and my answer would have been different if the question was asked properly. But because this person was not precise when asking their question, it caused the person to bitterly reprimand me. It was great; I felt like it was September 11th, 2001 and I had just said all brown people were not terrorists. It was the exact same reaction. The only thing that was different is that I was expecting better; I was expecting this person to be different. I was wrong, and that really let me down. I really thought I could trust this person to not jump all over somebody for having a different opinion than them. I was wrong. But I also realize that not all atheists are like this. I am an atheist after all. This is just more proof that I am my own person now, not wanting or needing the approval of like minded people, and flat out rejecting the bullying of their narrow minded attitudes --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/morecontentplease/support

What is art? What is culture? And what role do they play in Libya today? We’re delighted to reflect on Libya’s conflict in a very different way with one of the country’s best-known artists, Hadia Gana. Hadia has worked with ceramics and glass and produced many fascinating installations, and as a leading advocate for cultural heritage, recently founded Libya’s first art museum. Discussing the link between art and justice brings to mind our conversations with the great Justice Albie Sachs, who, when appointed to the Constitutional Court of South Africa by Nelson Mandela, realised that art played an essential role in dealing with the ghosts of the country's Apartheid past. A powerful reminder of the vital link between art and justice! You can find Hadia on Facebook at facebook.com/hadia.gana **Libya Matters is a production of Lawyers for Justice in Libya. In this episode, I dive into my perspective on the 2020 elections and what we need to do going forward. To set the record straight, I am neither a Republican or a Democrat - rather I see myself as opting for people who push policies to better populations lives. I talk about why I initially never really liked Obama and why I think he could have done a lot more as the first Black president of the USA. I chat about Muammar al-Gadaffi and how he was a prosperous leader for his people, but was killed by the Obama administration - I am not saying he did no wrong; but he did do a lot of great. I talk about what Obama did well, what he could have done more of. I chat a little about the broken policing system and how tax payers (especially the most disenfranchised and over-policed) are paying for the deaths of these lovely black people while banks are making profits off of them via police brutality bonds. Lastly, I talk about who I thought would have been the best US President in this time and why I believe he had an extraordinary public health framework and share two of his policies that I think need to be implemented going forward.Omari on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/omari-richins-mphShownotes: thePHmillennial.com/episode22Support The Public Health Millennial: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/thephmillenialUse Code “thePHmillennial” for discount: https://thepublichealthstore.comWebsite: https://thephmillennial.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephmillenial (@thePHmillennial)Email List: https://thephmillennial.com/signup/Support the show (http://paypal.me/thePHmillennial)

The crisis in Libya is about to get much worse. Nine months ago a renegade general named Khalifa Hiftar launched an attack on the internationally recognized and UN-backed government in Tripoli. That assault suddenly ended UN-brokered peace process that seemed to be on the brink of success. In the ensuing months, the sides have been locked into a stalemate, with fighting mostly confined to neighborhoods on the outskirts of Tripoli. But, recently Hiftar's foreign backers have stepped up their support. This includes Russia, which has deployed troops and equipment to Hiftar this fall. Meanwhile, Turkey is raising the possibility that it will send troops to defend Tripoli from Hiftar's attack. The situation is now extremely perilous. Outside forces, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates are fueling this conflict. Meanwhile, key diplomatic players in Europe and the United States are sending mixed signals about their preferred outcome. So, at the end of 2019 it could very well transpire that Libya descends into a crushing proxy war and civil war, of enormous humanitarian consequence. On the line to discuss the crisis in Libya is Mary Fitzgerald. She is a longtime researcher who recently returned from Libya. In this episode of the Global Dispatches podcast she explains how we got to this point--that is, how Libya descended into chaos after the fall of Gadaffi and how a civil war in Libya became the venue for an international proxy war. If you have 25 minutes and want to learn why Libya could become the major international crisis of 2020, have a listen.
The 2011 US attack on Libya to "save the people" from Gadaffi was an entirely manufactured narrative with Hillary Clinton's weaponized State Department, a chief author of the lies. Libya's population continues to suffer endless war and terrorism from a US intervention that only benefited al-Qaeda and gun runners to Syria and beyond. Libya. Dictator Muammar Gaddafi ruled the country from 1969 to 2011. The Arab Spring led to a Civil War and the deposition and death of Gadaffi in 2011. The country never quite recovered and remains in the throws of a violent Civil War. One most of us in the West, myself included, have not paid much attention to.Someone who did pay attention is today’s guest Robert Young Pelton. Pelton is an author and documentarian with extensive experience covering conflicts. Nonsense Section Maybe resignation will increase my poll numbers What happens when the center right joins forces with the cool nationalists? Finland has a example that maybe the likes of Spain should look to... Finland's government resigned on Friday (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/08/world/europe/finland-government-resigns.html), over what PM Juha Sipila says is a failure to overhaul the social and health care in the country. This strikes me as an odd move since they have a scheduled election in April anyway (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Finnish_parliamentary_election) The government’s resignation would not change the timetable for next month’s elections, the justice ministry said. (https://apnews.com/f373443cc74a4d17a3ee834a1134a5b7) Then I saw how Sipila's party is polling, a cool 14% down from their 21% in the last election. The confusing Finns Party (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finns_Party) was in the original collation before they split due to the a more extreme candidate winning their leadership. The defectors formed "Blue reform" and have half their parliamentary seats... but are now polling at ~1%. Apparently Finnish nationalists don't like the more moderate government friendly version of themselves. ### Possibly heading for a deadlock SDP could win the election but the right to center right having most of the seats. With a big chunk again going to the Finns which apparently are now too extreme for the other center right parties to work with? ###Sipila is also out as party leader "Juha Sipila, now heading a caretaker government in the Nordic country, told Finnish public broadcaster YLE that polls showing 14-percent support for the ruling Center Party meant “that I won’t for sure be running as a (chairman) candidate with that kind of support” at the 2020 party congress." https://apnews.com/6d89c385995248439bd6f5a0b5d3e89d ###The reforms in question look shiiiite The plan, which has been worked on by previous governments since 2006, is meant to tackle an aging population, improve efficiency and reduce public spending by 3 billion euros ($3.4 billions) by 2029. It pledged to offer Finnish municipalities and regions larger freedom to choose between public and private service providers for citizens’ social and health care. https://apnews.com/6d89c385995248439bd6f5a0b5d3e89d Everyone excited for Tuesday? It's Brexit fun time again! There will be another vote on the deal with the EU for leaving, which is mostly expected to fail... but the government whips are saying it will be "tight" (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-05/u-k-in-last-ditch-talks-to-fix-divorce-deal-brexit-update). So who knows anymore Topic 1 Estonia Parliamentary Elections What's the deal with weird family run parties? People are shook by the growth of the Mart Helme nationalist vanity party, or EKRE as they like to me known (https://www.dw.com/en/far-right-stoking-fears-in-estonias-parliamentary-election/a-47767421). Former ambassador to Russia leading an anti-West nationalist party might ring alarm bells in Trump-Russia conspiracy land but they're against a possible border treaty with Russia because it moves their border further West in some places (https://news.postimees.ee/1240490/estonia-s-conservative-people-s-party-criticizes-border-treaty-with-russia) They're more of a European style direct democracy and less centralization wanting National Front style thing. Just some chill Estonians that like having torchlight processions of their youth wing. Mart's son is also a super chill guy (https://news.err.ee/107416/conservative-politician-if-you-re-black-go-back) Estonian election officials are the best They have a really great website (https://www.valimised.ee/en) with result breakdowns in 3 languages Internet voting Looking at a results map makes it look like the EKRE did real well in terms of land mass... but mostly in rural areas. In the 3 Talin constituencies they were 10-11% against their performance of 17% nationally. Interestingly they did poorly with internet voting - generally under performing there. Now that's either indicative of their voter base or some sort of conspiracy. 43% of people voted online. They have a pretty reasonable explanation of their system and have a way of checking the server knows who you voted for with a smart phone. You can also cancel your online vote and go cast a paper one at any time... They also seem to have thought through the security reasonably well from a cryptographic point of view.. but I wouldn't trust my own government to implement something so competent ##Simple Breakdown Around 1 million eligible voters Ten political parties and 15 independents — totaling 1,099 candidates — are up for election. There are 101 seats up for grabs (51 for Majority) -Juri Ritas, former PM, led a 3 party coalition of Centre (ALDE), Reform Party (ALDE) and the Social Democrats (S&D) Main Issues are Taxation, Healthcare, Braindrain and the non-EU labour quota (that last one is fascinating). ###Seats: Reform ALDE 34 (up 4) Centre ALDE 26 (down 1) EKRE No EU party yet 19 (up 12) Pro Patria EPP 12 (down 2) Social Democratic S&D 10 (down 5) ###Current Sitch: Reform already attempted a two-party coalition with Centre. Centre said the party was too ultimatum-ish in their demands and that they disagreed on tax issues, they rejected the offer. Reform is now in talks with Pro Patria and Social Democratic party. https://apnews.com/edcca10fdb0f4433bc8ea7a01ab3286b https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019Estonianparliamentary_election ###Chill comments from EKRE Some of the party members have proposed a Europe-wide decriminalization of Holocaust denial and to "enter a correct teaching of the history of the Third Reich" https://www.timesofisrael.com/estonian-politician-vows-to-legalize-holocaust-denial/ Topic 2 Manu's big letter Published in every EU country - here's the Guardian version (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/mar/04/europe-brexit-uk), though I suppose the official government site is also fine (https://www.elysee.fr/emmanuel-macron/2019/03/04/for-european-renewal.en). Or if you're not bothered with Macron's prose Politico had a summary article (https://www.politico.eu/article/emmanuel-macron-europe-renaissance-vs-reality/), so did DW (https://www.dw.com/en/macron-issues-plea-for-europe-ahead-of-eu-elections/a-47769832) I don't think his economic policies will create as much art as the actual European renaissance. They have a fun website (https://eu-renaissance.org/en#) with a cheesy uplifting video. Did someone say pan European movement? If you thought Ciarán hated Volt... There are a lot of hot takes (https://www.eurotopics.net/en/215922/will-macron-s-ideas-help-save-europe) mostly cynical about the apparent lack of specifics, but I (Hugh) kind of disagree with that general take... also that it's "fanning" any "populist" flames. Smaller countries hate Macron EU wide protectionism ... because it's just there to protect French large companies who have a great time in the EU single market but don't want large multi-nationals to come in (i.e. spooky China). For smaller countries who don't have any giant corporations this protection seems like a bad thing because it stops the EU blocking things like mergers allowing the French companies to grow even bigger (https://www.politico.eu/article/macrons-battle-against-european-unity/) AKK poo poos Manu EU Plan Responding to Macron, Merkel protege warns against centralized EU https://reut.rs/2HoH1g3 Wauquiez, the leader of France's 3rd most popular party, Les lets take money from Gadaffi and defraud the public coffers party I believe is their rebranding, also thinks it's shit (https://www.politico.eu/article/laurent-wauquiez-hits-out-against-macron-letter-to-europe/). "We must exclude new enlargement", and some shit about migration being bad... Some other Germans think it's cool - like the SPD and FDP (https://www.dw.com/en/german-politicians-welcome-emmanuel-macrons-eu-initiative/a-47775398) Other than her 'teach Imams how to do Islam right' and migration == bad attitude she makes some okay points I guess... (https://www.dw.com/en/angela-merkel-successor-akk-responds-to-emmanuel-macrons-vision-for-europe/a-47840072) a permanent seat for the EU on the UN Security Council (sure) the European Parliament should focus its work in Brussels, rather than alternating with Strasbourg (small potatoes but sure) EU officials should no longer be exempt from national income tax. (they're what now??)

You would have to go back in the JSP archive to find my discussion on the Libyan arms sales, but if you've been listening with any regularity, you might remember the name, Marc Turi. He's the government arms dealer who sold weapons to Qatar for the U.S. government. Those weapons were then transferred, sold, bartered to terrorist groups operating in Libya and later flowed into Syria, Iraq and possibly Turkey. It's a felony for anyone (including government officials) to sell or facilitate the sale of arms to groups classified as terrorist organizations. In short, the State Department and Hillary Clinton specifically sold guns to Qatar through Mr. Turi with the intention of sending those weapons to terrorist groups fighting Gadaffi in Libya. Once word got out about what Hillary and the State Department had done, they immediately went after Mr. Turi, charging him with four felonies. Turi fought the charges and yesterday the Department of Justice dropped all charges against Mr. Turi rather than take him to court and expose what he knows about the scandal. It's another case of Hillary avoiding the day of reckoning we all hope she'll see. *** I've also got some post-debate coverage from last night and some pretty scary news out of Russia. All that and some witty banter, today on the Jason Stapleton Program. Subscribe and Share!! JasonSupport the show.

Mustafa Abdul Jalil is a former Justice Minister for the Gaddafi regime and now head of Libya's National Transitional Council. He publicly challenged Gaddafi's authority and offered his resignation but it was turned down and the dictator preferred to keep Mustafa Abdul Jalil close, apparently encouraged by the leader's son Saif al-islam Gadaffi.Known as a man of integrity and a stickler for the law, he defected in February after visiting the city of Bengazi, and saw peaceful protestors being shot. In May Mr Abdul Jalil did the rounds of European capitals calling on their governments to support the rebel National Transitional Council. But as Nick Ravenscroft reports there are doubts as to whether he has the leadership qualities to manage the disparate groups and steer the country toward democracy. Producer: Rob Cave.

Adrian Goldberg presents cutting edge investigative journalism. British gay Muslims are joining the global fight for equality and seeking gay marriage. 5 live Investigates speaks to pioneering gay couples about their 'nikah' - a Muslim matrimonial contract - and asks how they balance their sexuality with the Islamic faith, which vehemently rejects homosexuality. Many gay couples who marry in this way say they have actively rejected secular civil partnerships, as they say it is vital to have their union recognised by Allah, and not just by the state. The ceremonies are based on heterosexual Muslim marriage ceremonies, and are often conducted in private, without the knowledge of the couple's family, for fear of damaging so-called 'honour'. However, there is also a view that the British Muslim community may not be as conservative as it appears - it is claimed a 'liberal closet' exists whereby some families are becoming more accepting of their gay children, albeit behind closed doors. Adrian speaks to one American imam, who has conducted a number of gay marriages in Britain - some of which have been grand events. Also on the programme, analysis of the uprising in Libya with Huda Abuzaid, whose father was assassinated in his butcher's shop in London by Gadaffi's henchmen in 1995. The high maintenance charges for people living in supposedly 'affordable housing'. And claims that the student visa system is being used to bring over qualified people for training, who are sent straight out on 'work placements', doing a job at less than the minimum wage.
