You will never meet a more PASSIONATE and ENTHUSIASTIC man than this week's guest, BEN NEWMAN. Ben is one of the most sought-after PERFORMANCE coaches in America. He's worked with a lot of people and companies you'll know, and a few that will be new to you. We've known each other for so long that in many ways, this feels a lot like a FIRESIDE CHAT between two old friends. Ben released his new book, UNCOMMON LEADERSHIP, earlier this month. It immediately jumped to the top of the WALLSTREET JOURNAL LIST, and several other bestseller lists as well. This is an UPLIFTING book you're going to want to read. Ben doesn't just talk about different theoretical paths to leadership, he talks firsthand about the people he's worked with over the years including JERRY RICE, JON GORDON, and several Olympic and MMA athletes. As Ben explains, there is NO SINGLE WAY TO LEAD. He peels back these uncommon journeys to success and helps readers understand why and how they can be great leaders, too. For example, Ben has been blessed to be the mental performance coach for the ALABAMA FOOTBALL TEAM over the past several seasons. You'll want to hear what he has to say about working closely with COACH NICK SABAN, and one of the coach's beliefs about how to change your MINDSET when you practice that YOU CAN APPLY to any challenge in your life. If you want to know what makes Coach Saban uncommon, this strategy alone will convince you. We also spend a lot of time comparing NOTES, sharing STRATEGIES, and trading DETAILS on things every one of you can apply to your own lives. One of these is his signature strategy called THE BURN. THE BURN is the underlying motivation that resides in each one of us and Ben reveals how to DIG DEEP and TRANSFORM your Burn into real-life actionable items to help you do great things. You'll also want to hear what Ben has to say about how FAITH often plays a central role in some of the great leaders he's worked with. We exchange some FRANK and HUMBLE thoughts on the subject. Ben has a simple but insightful take on one of the differences between great and not-so-great leaders. Pay attention to what Ben has to say about MY vs. OUR. It's GOLD. Finally, I want you all the know the kind of man Ben Newman is. In honor of his mother who was a teacher, Ben is donating ALL PROCEEDS from Uncommon Leadership to a CHARITY that helps teachers' pay for classroom supplies and activities. To date, he's DONATED $50,000 to this cause. And that, my friends, is what an UNCOMMON LEADER does.

RE-RELEASE: This episode with Ben Leber first aired in March 2020 and we are re-running it today because it's a fantastic conversation filled with tips, strategies and inspiration on how to shift your mindset and overcoming your limiting beliefs. Today's guest, Ben Leber, is a retired 10-year NFL linebacker who played for the San Diego Chargers (now LA), the Minnesota Vikings and the St. Louis Rams.   Ben's football journey began when he accepted a full-ride scholarship to Kansas State University in the summer of 1996. In his time at KSU, Ben was twice named to Big 12 All-Conference Teams, 3rd Team All-American team, and he ended up 5th in tackles in school history while graduating with a business degree. It's a reflection of the hard work he put in to balance and excel in both football and academics.  He went on to earn All-Rookie honors his first year in the NFL with San Diego as one of the starting outside linebackers. And while Ben found success on the field, it was how he carried himself off the field that stands out.  He was a player representative all 5 years that he played for the Vikings and he was named the Korey Stringer Good Guy award by the local media.  He went on to play his 10th and final year with the St. Louis Rams. As Ben moved away from life as a professional football player, he knew he wanted to stay close to the game.  He began working for Fox Sports as a college football color commentator. He has worked his way up the ladder and he is now a full-time analyst working Nationally Televised games for the Big 10, Big 12 and Pac 12 Conferences.  He also maintains his life in Minneapolis and he began contributing and later working for KFAN radio. He appears on numerous radio shows throughout the week, mostly as a Minnesota Vikings/NFL insider. And this year he concluded his second full season as sideline analyst for the Vikings Radio Network. Our conversation with Ben goes deep into the many lessons he learned while playing college and professional football.  He dives into how he learned to take feedback to improve his game. Ben opens up about a period in his earlier career where he had significant self-doubt about his ability to play at the collegiate level.  He shares the tools he learned and used to overcome these limiting beliefs. Ben also shares his “win from within” approach to success and how this mindset shift has helped him during his football career and during his transition to his current career as a broadcaster.   The tips and strategies that Ben shares in our conversation are applicable to everyone, whether you are an athlete of any age, a parent, an adult and everyone in between.  You can find Ben Leber on:  www.benleber.com IG: @benleberofficial FB: @benleberofficial We'd love to hear from you how these tips have helped you think about and develop a “win from within” mentality.   Jump on over to IG and share in your stories and tag #theartoflivingwellpodcast. That was probably one of the wackier questions I asked Ben Hansen when I got the chance to talk with him about Roswell: The Final Verdict, a new series launching on discovery+ on July 2. The series is comprised of four different elements:  Reenactments Witness testimonies  The experts (like Ben) Artificial intelligence (AI) lie detection software. What did Ben think of the format? Was he surprised by any of the AI lie detection software reveals? Was there any other information shared during the series that surprised him or that he learned something new from? And what about Roswell: The Final Verdict? Who will like it? Will it change anyone's mind? (Not skeptics. As Ben put it, "There's not much you can do for them.") He answers all of this and more, as well as graciously puts up with my awkward, scattered questioning. Want more Haunt Jaunts? Jaunt with us online anytime at HauntJaunts.net. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' 6-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. Anthony DeSclafani gave up a leadoff home run to Jesse Winker, but that would be the only run the Reds scored against him in seven otherwise superb innings. At the plate, the Giants struck out 17 times, but they grinded against Reds starter Luis Castillo, and Alex Dickerson connected for a clutch three-run home run against him. Brandon Crawford homered in the late innings as well. The Giants' offense as a whole has been thriving the last couple of years with patience and power, and that is nothing but a good thing. As Ben stresses, don't worry so much about the strikeouts. Last night's high total was an outlier, anyway. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The labyrinth of long-term care and long-term care insurance is a daunting one for most people. Unfortunately, many people haven't prepared for the unexpected or, in the case of older adults oftentimes the inevitable. Ben Rao's new book: Paying For Long Term Care, comes from his personal journey with his stepfather Tom and his years working in the senior year living industry. As Ben recounts his journey, it may sound like a familiar story, either your own or someone you know. While it may be a topic people prefer to avoid at all costs, or put off until they are in the throes of the situation, what they will find out is that the cost of doing so is too great. Ben lays out what people need to know in an organized and simple way that's easy to follow. Anyone who is over the age of 50, or has a family member or loved one who falls in that category, should definitely listen to what Ben shares in this episode. From Ben's information and his work in the senior services industry, the natural flow is the conversation with Wendy Rinehart, co founder and owner of Family Solutions for Care. A company dedicated to helping families. Wendy will explain the important components that people need to address when seeking long-term care insurance as well as what to do when they are in need of filing a claim. She will explain what she calls the 4 C's Contract – what to look for in the contract that may be 30-40 pages in length, including elimination periods. Claimant – has to be asking for and receiving the kinds of care the policy will pay for. Care Providers – all levels. Carrier – 200 carriers to 10. Wendy's knowledge and explanation of the long-term care insurance process is a real eye opener you won't want to miss.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the virtual 2020 Winter Meetings, which get started today and last all week. The San Francisco Giants enter the Winter Meetings with several items on their wish list, some of which they may seek to address this week. It was at last year's Winter Meetings that the Giants signed Kevin Gausman to a one-year, $9M deal, and they also made the Will Wilson trade. This year, what the the Giants' biggest needs? As Ben describes, it's clearly starting pitching, first and foremost. They also need a versatile left-handed hitter capable of playing third and second, someone who can platoon with Evan Longoria, whose struggles against righties are longstanding enough that it's time to limit his exposure against them. Right-handed veteran relief pitching is also a need, after Trevor Gott and Sam Coonrod failed to take on high leverage roles in 2020, a development that may have cost them a spot in the postseason. 8/12/20-- This week on Gateways, Ben checks in with state Rep. Andy Vargas on the unorthodox end of the legislative session. With the deadline for major policymaking extended from July 31 through the end of the year, Rep. Vargas provides a look back on the session thus far and what’s on the horizon. A police reform bill has not yet been passed, but with the elements currently in conference committees, Vargas is optimistic that it will be resolved soon and is pleased with how it came together. “There’s a commitment from both chambers and the governor to get something done,” he says. Vargas would also like to see an amendment expanding expungement opportunities in the final version of the bill. “If not, we’ll certainly be fighting next session.” One opportunity that Vargas urges school districts not to miss is a federal school nutrition program. The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) provides universal free breakfast and lunch to every student in school districts in low-income areas. Vargas says it’s been a “huge success” in the city of Haverhill where it was implemented. As Ben points out, 97% of Gateway City students attend schools where over 40% of the students are economically disadvantaged. “So basically, every Gateway City student could benefit from this,” Ben says. The deadline to apply for CEP is August 31. --- As school districts across the commonwealth develop and announce reopening plans, parents are grappling with a whole host of anxieties. Some of these stem from what’s been described as a lack of sufficient communication. Two leaders at Massachusetts Parents United, Keri Rodrigues and Natasha Megie-Maddrey, join us to talk about this. Rodrigues, the founder of Massachusetts Parents United and the president of National Parents Union, says that while school districts have held virtual meetings between faculty and parents, “Whether or not they’ve been listening is a horse of a different color.” Some school districts have announced an all-remote start to the school year, which requires a lot of effort on the part of parents, who are turning to fellow community members to form their own systems or “microschools,” wherein families come together, coordinate their schedules, and pool their resources. This form of schooling is getting broader attention now, but “microschools” and “homeschool pods” are nothing new, Rodrigues says. “I know that that’s the fancy way that rich white folks are now calling these things, but this has been what poor Black and brown folks have done forever.” Massachusetts Parents United is encouraging these co-ops by providing $200,000 worth of direct grants to parents and families. In building these community homeschool pods, families are taking the opportunity to customize their childrens’ learning. Grant applications have expressed a desire to adhere to the district’s curriculum but also provide a supplemental Afro-centric curriculum, Latino cultural lessons, Spanish lessons, or music lessons. Others have asked for money to pay for desks or sensory toys, or to hire a special education paraprofessional. The deadline for applications is August 15.

There are a few fundamentals we need to perfect before hoping to maximize our progress in any kind of physical pursuit, and in today’s show, we explore what that means. As Ben explains, this project starts with learning what functional movement is and making sure we are doing it correctly. Functional movement, contrary to what we might think, actually refers to nothing more than breathing and walking. Ben drills down on the point that the movements we experience while breathing and walking are the foundation for any other movement, and so if we can’t do them correctly all else suffers. These two movements form the first parts of Ben’s ‘Breathe, Walk, Meditate’ mantra, and so naturally the conversation progresses into the third foundation for optimum wellness. We learn what meditation is and how to do it by using its predecessor, breathing. Toward the end of the show, Ben reveals that we can learn to incorporate all three of these most foundational building blocks of optimum performance into one simultaneous activity, so there is no excuse not to do them! Wrapping up, Ben implores us all to give this foundational trio a try as well as get involved with the Muscle Intelligence community, a place where we can all come to share our knowledge and learn from some of the greatest minds out there. On today's Locked On Giants Podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from fans on Twitter. Among the questions answered, Ben talks about when the Giants may (or may not) call up top prospect Joey Bart. The team must wait until July 29 if they want to ensure that Bart won't gain a full year of service time in 2020, which could allow him to reach free agency after the 2025 season as opposed to the 2026 season. However, even if the Giants call up Bart on July 29 or later, if the 2020 season ends up getting cancelled afterwards, it is possible that Bart would be granted a year of service time anyway. Another question asked and answered is about Jeff Samardzija. While his ERA was good in 2019, his peripheral numbers suggest that massive regression could be coming, and this could be an issue as "The Shark" hopes to work as a traditional starter who pitches deep into games. This could cause conflict with new manager Gabe Kapler, who probably won't let a struggling starter eat innings that could be more effectively managed with relief pitcher alternatives. Kapler has expressed a willingness to respect his players' wishes, while balancing an analytical approach. It will be fascinating to watch how it plays out in Samardzija's case. Ben also answers a question about what the Giants are likely to do at this year's trading deadline, which is August 31. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was extremely active at last year's deadline, and fans should expect the same in 2020, assuming the season is still being played. The Giants could have desirable trade pieces in Kevin Gausman and Drew Smyly, in addition to under-the-radar, controllable bullpen arms like Trevor Gott and Tyler Rogers. As Ben explains, bullpen pieces on a retooling team are non-essential, and if those players can be flipped for starting caliber position players or starting pitchers, that may benefit the Giants in the long run. In essence, bullpen arms can help contending teams win in the postseason, but they don't necessarily lead teams to the postseason. Also discussed is the bullpen hierarchy. Although many annointed Tony Watson the heir apparent to Will Smith when he departed in free agency, the Giants may have more talented relievers in Trevor Gott and Tyler Rogers. Rogers's 2019 season was spectacular, and he was looking sharp again in spring training and summer camp. He "opened" a game against the Oakland A's on Tuesday, and it's possible he could do the same on occasion during the regular season. The Giants are likely to go with a bullpen by committee approach at least to start the year, as they don't necessarily have a bunch of established guys in the 'pen. However, that doesn't mean they can't match up and make things difficult on their opponents. cbdMD Our friends at cbdMD have an amazing duo that can help you relax, regroup, and recharge when life gets chaotic. And to make it even easier cbdMD is offering all our listeners 25% OFF your next order when you use the promo code LOCKED ON MLB at checkout. If you listen to your body as you exercise, you can feel your emotions arise to the surface. Many people try to mute out these feelings, or they exercise to distract themselves from feeling. In today’s episode, Ben and Ash talk about why it’s important to listen to your body and work through your feelings. As Ben mentions at the start of the episode, these moments are opportunities to connect with yourself which is an important part of connecting with other people. Ben talks about how exercise like yoga has helped him to explore his feelings and he reflects on how this helps in the long-term — where muting negative feelings only helps in the short-term. Ash and Ben then discuss how this makes you more proactive in life as it improves your focus while decreasing anxiety. Ben links this to the energy work of John Amaral and shares the story of what happened when he attended a “nutty” neuro-feedback workshop. Near the end of the episode, Ben provides advice on how you can reinvent yourself by changing your habits before talking about why breathing, walking, and posture are the top three things that you should listen to in your body. Creating tutorials is a great way to get your name out there and promote your work. Social media channels like YouTube are wonderful platforms for making this happen, but figuring out where to start can be a challenge. Today’s guest started his tutorial channel just under a year ago and he’s already amassed an incredible following. Ben Marriott is a freelance motion designer and YouTuber from Australia. Specializing in 2D design, Ben illustrates and animates short humorous videos and gifs to create tiny stories. He recently started his own YouTube channel where he posts tutorials and behind-the-scenes videos to share his how he does his work. Today, Ben and I chat about how you can use YouTube as a teaching platform to help grow your motion design business. If this is something you’d be interested in doing too, Ben explains why it’s easier to break into than many think. As Ben says, your unique voice and perspective can benefit others, even the topic has already been covered. We also discuss how to manage your use of social media in a stress-free way. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when promoting yourself online. To help you avoid this, Ben explains how you can use Instagram and other platforms successfully without posting every day.    In this episode: The benefits of creating tutorials to share your skills with others What many motion designers want to learn about from others in the field Using Bilibi to gain access to a Chinese audience  Posting to social media without letting it take over all your time Why posting with consistency is essential to successfully using social media Ben’s process for researching, making, and promoting his tutorials How you can monetize your videos through sponsorships Ben’s equipment recommendations for recording stellar tutorial videos   Quotes “Anything I do to help myself grow an audience is going to make what I want to do in five years a lot easier.” [4:15] “It will fill up your whole day trying to post work that you’ve done. You’ll have no time to actually make any work.” [11:56] “Obviously the content has to be good, but if there’s no appealing thumbnail or title, no one will click on it.” [26:14] “Don’t think that everything is covered. Your opinion on something and your method of doing it, the way you communicate, might get through to different people.” [28:13]   Links Find Ben Marriott online Follow Ben on Instagram | YouTube   Episode 43 with Kelsey Brannan Matt Wilson Spark AR Social Blade Social Bluebook Getting Things Done by David Allen OBS   Podcasting and Youtube Gear Canon M50 Rhode Podcaster Mic Rhode Procaster Mic Blue Yeti Mic Scarlet 2i2 focusrite audio interface   Thanks for Listening! Virginia native Ben Cleary is the author of Searching for Stonewall Jackson, a non-traditional military history of one of the Civil War's most famous generals. As Ben tells Colin, his interest in "Old Jack" stems from how different the general seems to modern students of the war. Ben's book builds on a career spent writing and teaching. He began his work on Jackson after writing articles for the New York Times "Disunion" feature during the Civil War sesquicentennial. He is also a veteran of the Richmond writing scene and has taught at public schools in the area and in the juvenile justice system. Ben and Colin discuss Jackson's campaigns as well as the general's thoughts on slavery, religion, and family life. Ben talks, too, about his early writing career in the "Scarytown" era of Richmond and how he learned Russian literature from a chain-smoking countess at VCU.

Let me introduce you to Leon (aka Ben) Flottemesch, the most vibrant accountant you will ever meet! He joined me in the studio to mix up a Moscow Mule! A drink so good - and soooo simple to make! Did you know the Moscow mule got its name because vodka is so widely associated with Russia? And the mule - well it's the ginger beer that gives it the extra kick of flavor! Rubber hit the road back in college when Ben worked in a door-to-door sales job and he chats on how this role helped develop his gregariousness and ability to communicate with people - something he has carried with him throughout his career. Ben has dedicated his career towards helping small business owners. As a people person with an accounting background - the pieces fell into place as he left corporate America and decided to become a business owner as a partner at Simma, Flottemesch & Orenstein. With retirement on the horizon, not only is Ben contemplating what his 'third act' will be, but he is also assisting his others do the same as he is a Certified Exit Planning Advisor. He emphasizes the importance of worrying about the things you can change, and prepare for the things that you cant. As Ben so graciously put it, "Make Hay While The Sun Shines"! Cheers to that Ben! We have a great friend of MaxMyProfit on the show today who is a shining example of what can be achieved in business with the right coaching. Nicole Clarke-Baines has built up and sold multiple businesses and nowadays she fronts up a weight-loss programme that serves 8 countries and has a team of 2,500 people around the world. In fact our very own Ben has lost a lot of weight on this programme, so we can say categorically that Nicole knows what she’s doing!   See some of Nicole’s top tips below: **  Make your business build people rather than using people to build the business. **  Be careful about staying too long in a failing business. It isn’t a child, it is a business! Sometimes the investment isn’t worth it. **  Don’t set up a business without a plan. Even something that looks like the opportunity of a lifetime needs the planning to make it right. Is there really a business case for it? **  Surround yourself with intelligent and caring people who are brave enough to have a difficult conversation with you when it needs to be had. **  Get healthy!! If you’re in business and you’re not looking after yourself, your work will suffer.   In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: **  What motivated Nicole **  How to leverage income for your services **  The power of mentorship **  How Nicole manages such a large team across so many locations **  The importance of a clear vision **  How Nicole has managed to never sack anybody     Resources mentioned in this episode: **  Do you think you have what it takes to become a Business Excelerator™ at Max My Profit? 9/11/19-- A new week brings new polls to discuss. Last week, Steve and Stephanie spoke to the Chief Growth Officer at Change Research, which had published a poll finding Joe Kennedy III with a 17-point lead ahead of Ed Markey in the Senate race. Since then a Boston Globe/Suffolk University poll found Kennedy up by 14 points, confirming the substance of a poll that many considered to be an outlier. Steve explains why Kennedy is showing strength early on. Plus, WBUR released a poll this morning, this one on what their audience would like to hear candidates discuss. Jenn and Steve are then joined by Ben Forman, MassINC Research Director who co-authored a study on fare equity in Massachusetts. As Ben explains, the wealthiest people in Massachusetts end up paying the least amount of money in transit fares, thus exacerbating the income inequality problem that is so pervasive in Massachusetts. Later, good friend of the pod State Sen. Becca Rausch sits down to explain her recently filed bill that would standardize immunizations requirements in Massachusetts.
