In this podcast we discuss love, sloth, and free will in the context of Canto 18 of Dante's "Purgatorio." What is the nature of love, and how does it affect our souls? What is the true meaning of sloth? What place does free will have in our lives? We explore these questions.

Today on Ascend: The Great Books Podcast, Dcn. Harrison Garlick and Dr. Sarah Berry of the University of Dallas discuss Acedia, Avarice, and part of Gluttony in Cantos 18-22 of the Purgatorio.Visit thegreatbookspodcast.com for more information!Check out our GUIDE to the Purgatorio!Dr. Sarah Berry joins Deacon Harrison Garlick to explore Cantos 18–22, covering the terrace of sloth (acedia) and the transition into avarice and prodigality. In Canto 18, Virgil delivers a pivotal discourse on love as the root of all human action, explaining that love can be misdirected (pride, envy, wrath), deficient (sloth), or excessive (avarice, gluttony, lust). Berry emphasizes the terrace's brevity and lack of a formal prayer: “their prayers are their action... the penitents too... are doing the thing as a way of offering up some kind of prayer to God” (Dr. Sarah Berry), with running souls and examples of zeal (Mary's haste to Elizabeth, Caesar's swift march) countering sloth's cooling of love. The dream of the siren in Canto 19 warns against deceptive earthly goods, while the face-down penance on the avarice terrace forces fixation on the earth once loved excessively: “these are those who had a disordered love of money... goods that can't be shared” (Dr. Sarah Berry).Cantos 20–22 deepen the exploration of avarice's societal and personal consequences. Hugh Capet's lament in Canto 20 indicts the French dynasty's greed and sacrilege, including the capture of Boniface VIII. Berry highlights the terrace's broadened scope: “Dante is really broadening... our awareness of this constellation of problems” beyond mere hoarding or spending. In Canto 21, Statius is released with an earthquake and song, explaining his long purgation on sloth and avarice before moving freely upward. Canto 22 poignantly contrasts Statius (saved through Virgil's influence and grace) with Virgil himself, who lacks faith despite his virtues. Berry notes the tragedy: “Dante is inviting us... hoping that there is some special providence for Virgil at the end of his journey through purgatory” (Dr. Sarah Berry). The cantos reveal Purgatorio's hopeful, dynamic nature: purgation reorders love through grace, habituation, and contemplation, moving from deficient to excessive attachments, preparing the soul for divine union.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Ascend and Dante's Purgatorio02:29 Exploring Dante's Purgatorio: Themes and Structure04:30 The Importance of Purgatorio in Spiritual Growth08:32 Understanding Love and Culpability in Purgatorio12:00 Diving into Canto 18: The Lesson on Love13:26 Virgil's Discourse on Love and Free Will17:40 The Nature of Love: Ascent and Culpability20:31 The Role of Reason in Human Actions26:01 The Formation of Intellect and Will33:12 Contrapasso: The Penance of Slothfulness40:19 Examples of Zeal: Mary and Caesar42:17 Understanding Zeal and Sloth47:04 The Subtlety of Sin and Human Effort52:31 Dreams and Allegory in Purgatory01:00:27 The Nature of Prayer and Action01:01:58 Exploring Avarice and Its Consequences01:20:15 Exploring Dante's Inferno: Sin and Intellect01:23:03 Wrath and Sloth: Roots of Sin in Purgatorio01:25:23 Positive Examples: Virtue Against Avarice01:29:30 Dante's Critique of French Dynasties01:35:56 The Role of Statius: A New Perspective01:50:30 Virgil's Tragic Journey: Hope for Salvation?KeywordsDante's Purgatorio, Sloth, Love, Virtue, Spiritual Growth, Theology, Literature, Dante, Purgatory, Christian Virtues Dante, Purgatorio, allegory, sin, virtue, divine justice, theology, Mount Purgatory, purgation, salvation

Rise and Do Not Be Afraid: The Transfiguration, Zeal, and Sloth | Fr. Will Rooney | 2nd Sunday of Lent

Summary On the Second Sunday of Lent, the Church gives us the Transfiguration—every year—because we need what the disciples needed: hope. Fr. Will unpacks why Jesus brings Peter, James, and John up the mountain, and how this glimpse of glory strengthens them for the Passion and the “scandal of the Cross.” From there, the homily connects the Gospel to the Lenten series on the deadly sins, focusing on sloth (acedia): not simply laziness, but a spiritual lethargy that comes from forgetting what we were made for. When we lose sight of heaven, we grow indifferent, distracted, and even frantic—pouring energy into what doesn't last while neglecting our true mission. The antidote is zeal: remembering that every Christian is called to holiness, and that our vocation is lived out in concrete love—prayer, conversion, and daily sacrifice, especially toward the people closest to us. Key takeaways The Transfiguration strengthens hope: Jesus shows both who He is and what we are made for. Jesus prepares the disciples “against the scandal of the Cross.” Sloth (acedia) is not merely laziness—it's sorrow at spiritual joy and forgetfulness of our mission. Zeal is the opposite of sloth: remembering our vocation and investing in love of God and neighbor. Holiness begins “here”: in our homes, our parish, and the relationships God has entrusted to us.

We talked about this a lot last episode: Scott and Keith really like the Winter Olympics. Jono? He didn't even wake up to watch the Men's Hockey Gold Medal game against the USA. I guess not only is he not a fan of sports he also hates his country. I'm not even sure Jon is Canadian at all – how much do we really know about this man we've recorded 357 podcasts with really? Anyways, the Canadian Men and Women's Hockey teams failed us and lost to Team USA in overtime in both games. That sucked. Then Kash Patel was somehow let into Team USA Men's locker room after the game and that sucked even more. We go over our favorite moments of this edition of the Winter Olympics that are mostly just the best memes honestly. Also – if you read the blog post for episode 356 you'll remember that I was hyped about Ski Mountaineering. Well it didn’t disappoint. We wrap things up with finally getting Sinners onto “The List” and for some reason Scott made himself watch “Kraven the Hunter” while Jono made the much more reasonable decision to watch “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”. Anyways, we spend this episode of Garbage Time we talk about all 6 episodes of “Heated Rivalry” which naturally leads us into trying to figure out how to put “Shoresy” and “Heated Rivalry” into a shared universe. Scott's kid is playing Hollow Knight, Brady Tkachuk looks like Sloth from “The Goonies” and Scott gives some updates about voice work on the X-Men Audio Drama. Together, they visit Slumber the Sloth beneath his great starlit tree, where he teaches them that rest comes before sleep — and that sometimes our bodies need a little extra gentleness and patience when the light changes and bedtimes feel different. Through soft breathing, cozy moss, and the forest's evening song, the animals learn to trust the quiet and practice resting, even when sleep feels far away.

Should Britain move to a shorter working week? Would a three-day or four-day week make us healthier, more productive, and less miserable… or is it just the final stage of national decline dressed up as “wellbeing”?In this episode of Mark and Pete, we dive into the growing push for a reduced working week, inspired by countries like the Netherlands, where people seem to work fewer hours, take more time off, and still manage to run a nation that functions better than ours. Meanwhile, Britain clings to its proud tradition of overworking, underproducing, and pretending that exhaustion is a personality trait. We explore the real evidence behind four-day week trials, productivity studies, and why cutting hours can sometimes increase output. Spoiler: when people have less time, they waste less time. Fewer pointless meetings. Less email theatre. Less corporate box-ticking. More actual work. But we also ask the harder questions. Is the shorter working week only realistic for office workers with laptops and “hybrid schedules”? What about nurses, builders, shop staff, delivery drivers, and everyone else who can't simply log off and call it self-care? Is this reform… or just another perk for the middle class? We also tackle the cultural side of it: if people had more free time, would they invest it into family life, church, community, and rest? Or would we simply spend the extra days doomscrolling, ordering takeaway, and watching Netflix until we forget what day it is?With Mark's trademark poetry and Pete's Christian perspective, this episode asks whether the West needs fewer working hours… or whether it needs a deeper recovery: a return to purpose, discipline, and Sabbath-shaped living. Keywords: shorter working week, four-day week UK, Dutch work culture, productivity, burnout, work-life balance, modern Britain, cultural decline, Christian commentary, Sabbath rest.

In this invited lecture at Marist College, hosted by the Catholic Studies Program as part of their Marcelin Lecture Series, I narrate some of the key points and developments in the story of how we ended up with the current list of the Seven Deadly Sins, which are: Gluttony, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride. Originally, these start out as the Eight Capital Vices, a list which includes sadness, acedia, and vainglory, and which does not include envy. So, how did we end up with the list we know today? The story involves Christian monks in the Egyptian desert, Benedictine monks, a reluctant pope, poets, scholastic professors, confessors, and mystics, and ranges over a millennium of thinkers and texts. In the process, I discuss some of the key players: Evagrius Ponticus, John Cassian, Gregory I, Alcuin, Peter Lombard, Thomas Aquinas, and Dante Alighieri This portion of the talk discusses the treatments of the seven deadly sins by poets ranging from Prudentius to Chaucer and Dante, and by mystics like St. John of the Cross. We also conclude by examining a few additional topics raised by questions from the audience. n this invited lecture at Marist College, hosted by the Catholic Studies Program as part of their Marcelin Lecture Series, I narrate some of the key points and developments in the story of how we ended up with the current list of the Seven Deadly Sins, which are: Gluttony, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride. In the process, I discuss some of the key players: Evagrius Ponticus, John Cassian, Gregory I, Alcuin, Peter Lombard, Thomas Aquinas, and Dante Alighieri This portion of the talk discusses the origin of the eight capital vices that precede the schema of the seven deadly sins. We look first at Evagrius Ponticus and then at John Cassian, both important monastic writers. "In Ecclesiastes 10:16–11:6, Solomon addresses the relationship between wisdom, leadership, diligence, and sloth, showing how personal character shapes not only individual lives but entire households, churches, and nations. His message is direct and searching: sloth, which flows from folly and self-indulgence, destroys kingdoms, while diligence, which flows from wisdom, preserves and builds what God has entrusted to us.The passage begins with a series of proverbs about kingship. A land is cursed when its leaders are immature, self-indulgent, and more concerned with pleasure than responsibility. It is blessed when rulers exercise restraint, discipline, and diligence for the good of others. Solomon exposes the logic of slothful leadership—“let us feast, drink, and trust that money will solve everything”—and shows how this mindset inevitably leads to decay, collapse, and ruin.Although most of us are not kings, the application is broad. Any position of authority—parents in the home, elders in the church, leaders in the workplace—carries real consequences for others. Wisdom in leadership is not theoretical; it is displayed in diligent, self-sacrificial care rather than indulgence of self. Solomon ultimately points us to Christ Himself, the true King, whose wisdom and diligence were perfectly expressed in laying down His life for His people and building an everlasting kingdom. In Ecclesiastes 11:1–6, Solomon expands the theme from leadership to life in general. He exhorts God's people to diligence in generosity, labor, and obedience, even in the face of uncertainty. Waiting for perfect conditions leads to paralysis. The wise person acts—not because outcomes are guaranteed, but because God is sovereign and good. We sow seed faithfully and trust the Lord to give the increase. This passage confronts passivity, fear-driven inaction, and self-centered living. Christians are not called to idle waiting, but to active faith—working diligently, giving generously, and serving sacrificially, confident that God governs what we cannot see.Sloth ruins. Wisdom builds. May God grant us grace to walk in wisdom, imitate our diligent Savior, and faithfully steward what He has placed in our hands."

Proverbs 19:22–24 defines true worth in ways the world often ignores. What is desired in a person is loyal love and faithfulness, and a poor man with integrity is better than a liar with means. Yet the passage also warns of the quiet self-destruction of sloth—so extreme that even basic effort is abandoned. In today's Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart explore how God measures character, why covenant loyalty outweighs material success, and how laziness ultimately consumes itself. Season 5, Episode 708: "Why are men so sexy in gray sweatpants?" she asked. (from the excerpt at the end of the episode from the book "Me + You" by Mallory Glass, coming soon! Narrated by Ruan Wilow.) What happens when an old friend's challenge sparks a secret writing career that garners thousands of views overnight? Mallory Glass found out! Twin Cities romance author Mallory Glass didn't expect her foray into sensual fiction to take off so quickly. After initially writing in secret, she published a 75,000-word story on Literotica that consistently earned ratings around 4.7 to 4.8 stars. Her debut novella "Stone Heart" and award-winning flash rom-com showcase her commitment to portraying positive communication and consent in romance, deliberately avoiding the tired miscommunication trope common in the genre, plus adding in humor. Beyond the page, Mallory shares her home with a surprisingly hostile New Zealand rabbit that roams freely while she works. (The rabbit's personality definitely keeps things interesting.) After medically retiring in 2015, she returned to writing as therapeutic practice, discovering an unexpected passion for revision and editing.  Through her work and upcoming micro press Sloth and Envy, Mallory champions sex positivity and bodily autonomy, transforming once-taboo vocabulary into celebrations of consensual human experience. She believes authenticity and fun should coexist in storytelling, and her writing reflects exactly that philosophy. Listen to hear more about writing sensual fiction without shame. Mallory Glass enjoys creating worlds within worlds for her characters to explore. She writes for those who love to embrace a temporary escape from reality. When she's not engaged in vicarious angst over the antics of fictional characters, she digests too much media and suffers the antics of her hostile pet rabbit. Her debut novella, Stone Heart, was released March 2025 from Sloth & Envy Press. Mallory's flash rom-com recently won first place in Writing Battle's professionally judged Heart contest. In October 2025, her short story "Wade vs. Roe" was published in Dread Mondays, a workplace horror anthology from Whisper House Press. Mallory's college romance, Me + You, will be released in spring 2026. She live in the Twin Cities, MN. What St Isaac exposes here is not a technique but a diagnosis. He is ruthless because the sickness is deep. The soul is meant to be good soil but soil is not neutral ground. It either receives the seed with vigilance or it becomes choked. Remembrance of God is not a poetic feeling but a sustained pressure on the heart a vigilance that does not sleep. When this remembrance is alive the soul becomes a place where God Himself shades and illumines. There is no romance here. Light appears inside darkness not because the darkness is denied but because the soul has chosen to stand watch within it. St Isaac refuses to let us spiritualize our way around the body. The belly is not incidental. What enters the mouth reaches the heart. He speaks bluntly because self deception thrives in vagueness. Excess dulls perception. Pleasure thickens the air of the soul. Wisdom is not stolen from us by demons alone but smothered by our own indulgence. A full belly does not merely weaken resolve it fuels lust because the body has been trained to demand satisfaction. This is not moralism. It is anthropology. The knowledge of God does not coexist with a body that has been enthroned. Here asceticism is revealed as truth telling. It strips away the lie that discipline is punishment. Labor is not opposed to grace. Labor is the ground where grace becomes intelligible. St Isaac compares it to labor pains because knowledge of God is not an idea grasped but a life brought forth. Without toil there is no birth only fantasy. Sloth does not simply delay holiness it gives birth to shame because the soul knows it has avoided the cost of truth. This is where the inner disposition becomes decisive. Asceticism without remembrance hardens into pride. Asceticism without humility becomes violence against the self. But remembrance without discipline dissolves into sentimentality. St Isaac holds them together because life demands it. The question is not how much one fasts or how little one sleeps but whether the heart is consenting to be trained. Discipline embraced with resentment breeds bitterness. Discipline embraced with attention becomes wisdom. In an age starved of living elders this teaching cuts even deeper. We are tempted either to abandon asceticism entirely or to turn it into a private project shaped by personality and preference. St Isaac offers neither comfort. He places responsibility back into the hands of the one who desires God. The absence of elders does not absolve us. It makes inner honesty more urgent. The body becomes the first elder. Hunger teaches restraint. Fatigue teaches humility. Failure teaches mercy. If these are ignored no amount of reading will save us. Christ's closeness to the mouth of the one who endures hardship is not sentimental reassurance. It is promise and warning. He draws near to the body that has consented to the Cross. Not to the body pampered under the language of balance or self care. The care Christ offers is not the removal of hardship but His presence within it. Asceticism then is not heroic excess but fidelity to reality. It is the refusal to live divided. Priceless indeed is labor wrought with wisdom because it produces not control but clarity. The soul begins to see. And once it sees it can no longer pretend. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:01:50 Fr.
