Poets Bill Lavender, Sean F. Munro, and Rodrigo Toscano talk with Roxi Power about the wildly successful annual April event they organize: The New Orleans Poetry Festival. In the second half of the show, they read their own poems; the political poetics of each poem buzzes with national and global currents. Festival co-founder Bill Lavender reads from his opus-in-progress that he began writing on the day of the January 6 insurrection: City of God, inspired by Augustine of Hippo's book of the same name. Rodrigo Toscano: "We're not impresarios of poetic labor. We're here to build relationships. Atomization is what most Americans are experiencing. Alienation to the hilt. There's no better culture than New Orleans to attack that alienation...through the joyful celebration of the art that we've devoted our lives to: poetry." This week on High Noon with Inez Stepman, the indefatigable Ian Rowe joins the pod. Rowe is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a visiting fellow with the Woodson Center as part of their 1776 Unites project. He is the author of the new book Agency: The Four Point Plan (F.R.E.E.) for ALL Children to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative and Discover their Pathway to Power, and runs a new set of charter schools in the Bronx based on the four cardinal virtues.Ian and Inez discussed how perception and ideology can affect kids' psychology in a very real way, the middle ground between total individualism and a kind of systemic collectivism, and how we can recognize both personal agency and institutional influence on people's life outcomes. They also dig into what to do when those most influential institutions — like family structure, schools, and others, become weak and corrupted — and how those who have found themselves in the thickets of modern life, without the human and civic supports they desperately need, can nevertheless find a pathway to a positive future.--High Noon is an intellectual download featuring conversations that make possible a free society. In higher education, how do spaces impact the experience of learning and innovation? Student success appears to be tied to belonging. Not only that, students can flourish when able to connect the academic, the social, and the career aspects in their college experience. Future spaces must adapt to the changing needs of experiences held in educational spaces. Welcome to the inaugural season of Architecture 5 10 20! I'm your host, Guy Geier, Managing Partner of FXCollaborative Architects in New York. Guests from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences related to the built environment will come to share their thought leadership. Our conversations will start with understanding how they arrived at what they're doing now. More importantly, we will focus on discussing their vision for the future, looking out 5, 10, and 20 years. Today, we're joined by Elliot Felix who is the founder and leader of Bright Spot, a Buro Happold company. Bright Spot offers solutions to make experiences better for people. Apart from being a longtime friend and fellow UVA Architecture School Grad, Elliot is an accomplished strategist, facilitator, and sense-maker. He's on a mission to create more engaging and equitable student experiences by helping colleges and universities transform their student services, spaces, staffing, and systems. Elliot is the author of How to Get the Most out of College: 127 Ways to Make Connections, Make it Work for You, and Make a Difference, which explores a proactive commitment to experiencing higher education. Listen to Elliot share how he is helping institutions transform the landscape of educational spaces and education itself. He wants students to realize that college is not an obstacle course to just get through, but a place meant for building, creating, and making. Elliot shares his thoughts on stackable credentials, atomization of skills, and social atmospheres in education spaces. Elliot's work can be summarized by one guiding principle: What happens in a space precedes the space itself. As education steers away formal spaces to space of community, collaboration, and creativity, how can architects respond to this change through design? Learn why spaces are an evolving service, not a fixed product, in this conversation with Elliot. Time stamps: [01:47] - Elliot Felix credits his art teacher for sparking his interest in architecture. Melanie Yazzie is a political organizer, a vocally anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist thinker, and an Indigenous revolutionary. She currently works as an assistant professor in the Departments of Native American Studies and American Studies at the University of New Mexico (https://nas.unm.edu/people/faculty/me...) and also organizes with The Red Nation, an indigenous-led leftist organization committed to immediate and material decolonization (https://therednation.org/). She is the lead editor of Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society and has co-written two incredibly important books, The Red Deal: Indigenous Action to Save Our Earth and Red Nation Rising: From Bordertown Violence to Native Liberation. We talk about those texts here, and about some of Dr. Yazzie's forthcoming book projects. Yazzie's work decrypts and diagnoses the individualism that characterizes liberal politics. And she is, as she explains here, understandably frustrated about the lack of progress that has been made on dealing with the liberal takeover of radical politics, in part via the reassuring language of “reconciliation.” In relation to this problem, Yazzie talks about the palpable “confusion” and “alienation” that exists among white settlers who participate in solidarity protests alongside Indigenous peoples. What she says we tend to overlook, though, is that this alienation is a defining feature of capitalism, and that the desire to be close to and internalize the type of connection and feeling of interdependency that Indigenous peoples feel toward the land, even it comes from a sincere place, is a deeply messy, difficult and unsettling tendency. The rise in “settler extremism” is, in her words, a “direct response to the existential threat that” even a change in the “symbolic order” represents. And so, for this reason, she reflects on how, as an educator, she has seen a “full scale assault on education” and why it might make sense that "the realm of ideas and the realm of intellectual production is” a “battleground… right now politically.”

Shapiro also defends capitalism against critiques from the new right, including that in its exaltation of the individual, capitalism itself creates forces that tear apart family and community.--High Noon is an intellectual download featuring conversations that make possible a free society. Since the 1970s, America's sense of community, measured in “social capital,” has steadily declined, resulting in what sociologists sometimes call “the atomized self.” We are more disconnected from one other now than we were in the past, which directly impacts how we go about getting our need for recognition and dignity met. And with two very different understandings of what dignity is (recognition of sameness versus recognition of differences), we are often thrown into conflict with one another, which is part of our cultural crisis. This must be named if it is to be transcended.

Atomization is the breaking down of jobs into projects and tasks, individual pieces that can be completed and tracked. This means organizations are looking to match talent to task so they can use the highest quality, lowest cost actor to complete the work. Why is atomization happening and why does it matter? 1. Agility amidst uncertainty – easier to scale up and down 2. Efficiency within teams – A talent-to-task approach allows you to assemble dynamic teams with various abilities custom picked to deliver what is necessary on a given project 3. Availability of talent – gig economy 4. It makes things trackable – in a place where data is increasingly important 5. It means organizations are looking for learning partners to help them fulfil tasks and stay agile in the midst of uncertainty. And that is something we have absolutely seen over the past few months. Many of our clients are giving us tasks they don't want to do in house because it's simply too expensive. As Kingsley Aikins likes to say “There are far more talented people outside your organization than inside it!” The highest quality actor to complete tasks might not be internal employees, but part of a vast network of “gig” workers. In addition to gig workers, trusted learning service partners (like, for example, https://www.sureskills.com/Homepage (SureSkills)…) are increasingly relied on to deliver an extended workforce to larger organizations with a range of projects they need to outsource while maintaining the requisite level of quality output. We work with a household name organization maintaining their learning material. They have in-house content creators building dynamic learning content, but they don't want those people spending their time responding to feedback and assessing the success of the courses they already have. So we have partnered with them and created a course maintenance framework, whereby we reactively respond to the concerns of students taking the course, and proactively make recommendations for improvements based on our vast experience building learning content. It's a great example of the increased need for learning partnerships and the atomization of work!

Rebooting the economy - should we look at 9/11? Prior to 9/11, New York was not a friendly community, but it had changed. It was a totally different culture. Will our culture change? Small businesses will need to look at core customers first and determine wants vs needs. How to reboot your high-contact service business? Preselling gift cards for future services. Prior to this - personal service jobs were solid because jobs could not be outsourced - but now those are affected too. Shows off who can and cannot be resilient Bosses are going to have to fight to get office workers to come to the office. We will have a much different workforce going forward. People are struggling to balance work and home on either side of the "commute wall". Like a psychological boundary. People will need to adjust their home social psychology Atomization of work HR movement based on value not on time A lot of business is based on want not need - they will look at things differently. What regulations no longer apply. Many people do not segment their time via a work breakdown structure Kids wont listen anyway
A special guest appears for the first episode of the season! Andres Emilsson from QRI and Qualia Computing has graced us with some epic discussion. We explore the Neural Annealing concept and how Cognitive Atomization fits in as well as discussion of human development, perception, evolution, psychedelics, ketamine, and more. In this week’s episode of “Marketing Today,” Alan talks with Jason Jedlinski, senior vice president and head of consumer products for Gannett and the USA Today Network. Prior to joining Gannett and USA Today, Jedlinski spent seven years with the Tribune Company as well as serving a brief stint in the world of ad tech. In his current role, he is responsible for everything the consumer sees from Gannett and the USA Today brands. During the course of their discussion, Jedlinski addressed a number of topics, including his take on the monetization of content, the evolution of digital advertising, and what he means when he talks about the “atomization of content.” In speaking about the atomization of content, Jedlinski points out ways Gannett and USA Today endeavor to reach consumers with content they’re curious about and can use. Not only that, he points out how the interactions consumers have with the content make it that much more vital. “It’s really thinking about how we can leverage the information we gather, and the expertise we have, and democratize it and make it accessible as broadly as possible,” says Jelinski. “And how we bring the wisdom of the crowd in to augment that and make it better and help point us to stories that should be told.” He goes on to add, “Just as we’re breaking up this content into these molecular elements, we also need to find ways to get feedback loops with the people reading and consuming and interacting with that content to further make it relevant." Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Jedlinski’s career started in TV news before undergoing a metamorphosis, where a redefined role led him into the world of digital content and consumer products. (1:23) “Our go-to-market name for Gannett” — Jedlinski talks about the USA Today Network. (4:38) “It’s a winner-take-all dynamic” — Jedlinski explains the “atomization of content.” (6:36) Jedlinski reveals his thinking on creating and organizing content. (9:50) Leveraging location and building stories in different ways. (12:25) Voice as the accelerator of change. (15:39) Jedlinski on the monetization of content. (21:12) Journalism in his blood: Jedlinski actually started a newspaper when he was in grade school. (28:08) Jedlinski is proudest of his mentoring efforts to help people learn and develop. Heather McGowan is the Co-Founder, Author and Advisor for Work to Learn. She speaks internationally on the future of work and the future of learning. She advises and partners with education and business leaders to most effectively prepare for rapid and disruptive changes in learning, work, and society. In higher education, McGowan advises presidents and senior leaders to develop students’ learning agility as well as critical thinking skills in order to prepare graduates for jobs that do not yet exist. McGowan also guides corporate executives to re-think and re-frame their business models, and their understanding of team and organizational structures, to be resilient and successful in changing markets. She is the co-author of the book Disrupt Together: How Teams Consistently Innovate and numerous well-received articles. In looking at the future of work, which skills will benefit future students and educators? McGowan suggests seeking to understand, to learn and adapt. Work on upgrading your “Operating system” – the overall ‘you’. How about the future of education degrees? Is there a ‘future proof’ field? McGowan believes in thinking like an ‘X’, so you can look at all disciplines (similar to ‘liberal arts degrees’), as opposed to focusing on one specialty in depth. When it comes to the 4th industrial revolution, McGowan says, “we are seeing this merger of cyber physical systems and the internet of things where everything around you has some form of intelligence--anything mentally attained or predictable can be achieved by an algorithm--and it’s no longer just the physical labor that gets replaced by non-biological intelligence but it’s cognitive labor as well” Because of the fact that cognitive labor is now being affected by this 4th Industrial Revolution, we have to move towards learning agility as well as becoming more adaptable and empathetic, to ensure that we stay relevant in the workplace. There are 3 interlocking factors that are transforming work, called the “3 A’s”: Atomization – a job being broken into job components –the ‘thing’ that needs to be done ‘gig work’, working 24/7, working around the work Automation – work done entirely by non-biologic intelligence – like software that schedules in a life-like sense Augmentation – using something to extend the human potential – like the robots used in surgery McGowan’s advice for people who want to stay relevant is to step into a community such as LinkedIn or another group that are learning communities as these groups learn a lot from each other, really connect with these groups and make a commitment to learn something new everyday. What you will learn in this episode: Why students need to think as futurists ..and how we need to prepare students to lose their jobs Why we should stop asking the three “what” questions What learning uncertainty is A look at the evolution of work and where we are today
