I'm excited to share with you some insights from my latest podcast episode, where I had the pleasure of hosting James, a Marine veteran and founder of "Freedom from Anger". His story is a testament to the transformative power of personal growth and the importance of finding one's purpose. The Power of Anger: James and I delved into the topic of anger, a powerful emotion that can drive both destructive and constructive behavior. We both shared our personal experiences with anger and how it shaped our lives. James' journey from a Marine to a behavioral health professional is a testament to the power of self-reflection and personal growth.Finding Purpose: James emphasized the importance of finding your true calling. He believes that many people experience anger because they are stuck in unfulfilling jobs. His advice? Don't settle for a job that brings frustration and unhappiness. Seek out your purpose and find fulfillment.Road Rage Education: We discussed James' innovative program developed in response to the high rates of road rage incidents in Tennessee. The program focuses on forgiveness and understanding, reminding us that everyone makes mistakes.Free Anger Management Assessment: James offers a free anger management assessment and consultation on his website. This four-part process covers anger styles, perceived stress, and other related factors. It's a great starting point for anyone questioning whether they have an anger problem.Red Flags: Increased arguing with a spouse or family members is a significant red flag, according to James. He emphasizes that these arguments can build up over time and lead to explosive situations and even legal consequences.Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: James introduced us to rational emotive behavioral therapy, which focuses on how thoughts and perceptions shape our reality. He emphasized the need to reframe negative thoughts and cultivate gratitude to avoid getting trapped in a cycle of negativity.Connect with James: If you're interested in connecting with James, you can reach him via his website, freedomanger.com. He offers a free assessment and consultation to help you understand and manage your anger.A Vital Point on Anger: James shared a thought-provoking perspective - no one can make you angry; it's how you perceive and react to others' actions. This concept requires self-reflection and personal accountability, but it's a crucial step in managing anger effectively.I encourage you to listen to this enlightening episode and take the first step towards understanding and managing your anger. Remember, it's not about suppressing your anger, but channeling it into something constructive.Support the showNext Steps Share your thoughts with a review - https://www.uncensoredadviceformen.com/reviews/ Let's connect on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshuabrucewilson/ Subscribe and Watch on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI11BikVb5CbEwIwjmR89Iw

Despite facing malnutrition, starvation and disease, Christopher John Huckstep's father set up a school in the Japanese internment camp where his family was sent in 1943. Herbert Huckstep ensured the 350 children of Lunghwa Civilian Assembly Centre were taught a wide range of subjects using brown paper bags to write on. The school was called Lunghwa Academy and it had its own badge, motto and certificates. A syllabus was followed, exams were taken and there were even evening classes for adults. The Japanese set up more than 20 internment camps in China and Hong Kong holding an estimated 14,000 people, but it is not believed that such a sophisticated schooling system was established elsewhere. In spite of the many hardships, educational standards were kept so high that qualifications taken in the camp were later recognised by the Cambridge exam board when the exam scripts were taken to England after the war. Christopher John Huckstep shares his memories with Josephine McDermott. (Photo: Christopher John Huckstep and other children at Lunghwa Civilian Assembly Centre, Shanghai, in 1945. Welcome to another episode! This week I'm so excited to welcome my new friend, Jenn Trepeck of the Salad With a Side of Fries.    Personal experience led Jenn to seek information on wellness and weight loss and she now pays it forward by sharing nutrition education on her podcast. Jenn built her business as a side hustle while working full time in hedge funds. Now, in addition to her health podcast and coaching, she coaches entrepreneurs like herself to make their side-hustle their full-time job.   Our conversation focused very little on careers, however, and had everything to do with building authentic networking relationships. Key takeaways Entrepreneurship was naturally in Jenn's world as both parents were self-employed. She studied business in undergrad but found herself bored in her first job and started her side hustle. Jenn was introduced to the curriculum she now teaches during a personal struggle with her own weight and health. Jenn worked as a photoshoot producer and was introduced to working in investing through a colleague. She went on to work in nearly every administration position within a hedgefund before leaving to take her side hustle full time. Jenn appreciates her time building her business on the side because it built confidence and financial stability. She cautions against appearing too desperate to potential clients. Jenn used to attend business networking events that she calls “the business card shuffle.” She says the best approach now is to get to know someone first as a person and connect through business later. Recognize what makes you unique and niche down. Avoid identifying your business as seeking “anybody who…” because being too broad can actually backfire. Challenge yourself in conversation to see how long you can go without mentioning a person's career. Jenn's favorite conversation starters include “What's on tap for this weekend?” and “What's good and new?” Your networking group becomes your “army of unpaid marketing avengers” and brings much better clients than a Facebook ad.   Connect with Jenn through her website, Salad With a Side of Fries, or through Instagram at @saladwithasideoffriespod or @jenntrepeck.   Quotes I did the typical thing- Interned at the big companies, went to work full time, and was bored. What's next? I'm supposed to just keep doing this thing every day? Worlds collided after I had such a powerful experience with this program… This, THIS is what I'm going to do. Desperation is like a wall around you. The challenge is to have that behind the scenes and not in a conversation with a potential client. Networking isn't about the person you're talking to. It's about the thousands of people that they know that you don't know. Every person is a window to a thousand-plus people you don't know Going back and forth in paragraph emails does not build a relationship. What makes you different than everyone else out there who does what you do? Wellness for real life

Once upon a time, there was a Marwari girl from Kolkata who grew up in a family with no food restrictions. She went to Singapore to study film making after her school finals. Cooked for her friends there. Realised that she enjoyed cooking more than she enjoyed making films. Still in her teens, she went off on a journey of self discovery by attending a cooking course. She attained enlightenment there and went to Le Cordon Bleau, London, to study. She returned to Calcutta. Interned in top hotel kitchens. Realised that everyone treated her as her papa's daughter and decided that she did not want to be pampered by her bosses! She quit to start a Latin American restaurant in Kolkata which had the city eating out of her hands. It imploded in a couple of years thanks to investor issues and she decided that independent was the way for her. She set up her own contemporary European cafe in the city of tetrazini, fish a la Diana, chicken a la kiev and managed to finally shake Calcutta out of the age of classic French sauces. Not before she faced a lot of trouble from the para uncles and mastans whom she faced head on. She then decided to come to Mumbai and Bandra west at that, land of some of the most prime real estate in the world, and opened a small Latin American Cafe. She claims to be a non-baker, but my wife orders in her keto brownie almost everyday. I am and proud to present a global citizen from my home town, chef Urvika Kanoi of The Daily, Kolkata, and Cafe Duco, Mumbai, in the latest episode of #foodocracyforher #FoodocracyForHer by Kalyan Karmakar is India's longest running podcast featuring women entrepreneurs in the food and beverage business. Jan Hopkins is a master at creating sculptural vessels and figurative sculptures from unusual natural materials such as citrus, melon and pomegranate peels, lotus pods, fish skin, leaves, and seed pods. Each piece is a marriage of deep sensitivity and reverence to materials with a heavy emphasis on concept and innovation. Jan studied basketry with indigenous and contemporary artists, learning the art of meticulous construction, the basics of how to gather and prepare materials, and understanding new concepts in design beyond traditional construction. In the early 90s, challenged with the depletion and unavailability of many of the natural basketry materials, she began experimenting and innovating new ways of processing organic materials that she successfully uses in her work today. Her initial aspiration was to preserve the beauty of the materials she began to by constructing vessel forms. Jan's work evolved to more figurative work with narratives sewn into each intricately designed piece. Jan and her husband Chris have also embarked on a deeply personal collaborative project about a part of her family's history, The Japanese American incarceration during WWII. Piece by piece, Jan is puzzling together family stories that are both heartbreaking and inspiring. Jan states, “This project has changed the essence of my work and has challenged me to innovate new ways of construction and storytelling.” Their two-person show was exhibited at the Schack Art Center, Everett, WA in 2018. A future exhibit is scheduled to open at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art on Bainbridge Island in 2022, The timing of this exhibit marks the 80th Remembrance anniversary of the first Japanese Americans taken away from their homes on Bainbridge Island and sent to Manzanar Concentration Camp. He moved to Los Angeles in 1989, bumped into his friend Larry David. Showed him a humor piece he wrote for the New York Times. Jerry Seinfeld liked it too and yada yada yada, he gets on the show.  Peter wrote and produced Seinfeld for six year. He's best known for his classic Seinfeld-isms: “Spongeworthy,” “shrinkage,” and “double-dipping.” He joined DreamWorks in 1997 and created the TV show “It's Like, You Know…,” a scathing look at life in Los Angeles. He punched up the animated kid flick Madagascar and gets a hypochondriacal giraffe named after him. He's still writing. Screenplays, novels, op-eds, lists. He dabbles in stand-up and doodles subconsciously. He shoots hoops and lives in LA with his dog Ike. Dan Rosenberg was born in a tiny suburb of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania called Beaver Falls (more like a suburb of that suburb called Chippewa Township) and lived in the third unit of a duplex. His father was a self employed auto parts peddler that loved baseball and apple pie with cheese on it. He would often work late in his parts store trying to invent things that already existed, like the telephone or thumb tacks. His mother was a florist, an artist and a part time immigration attorney focusing on citizens of Armenia and West Virginia. He graduated in the upper 10% of the lower third of his high school class and was an active member of the "Tall Guy's That Can't Play Hoops" club as well as the Jazz Band, where he was fourteenth chair tenor tuba. Several years ago, he walked into a comedy club and his life was forever changed. “The club was also a cult and they ‘recruited' me to serve as their light bulb changer.” He's done stand-up comedy and writing ever since. he's written several spec scripts, like, "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "The Office," and a killer "Too Close for Comfort." ("Monroe Gets a Job") He's also written for several radio shows as well as two books. The first "The Book on Hosting: How Not to Suck as an Emcee" and "The Book on Vacuums: The Joke Sometimes Writes Itself.” Check out Dan's comedy special on Amazon Prime.

They had also hired additional staff to maintain safety health protocols for covid such as social distancing and people really showed trust in them. They are also doing a lot of virtual school group tours, they have Tens of thousands students who come to the aquarium each year. They also got a fish friends fund for underserved youth and they actually got thousands of underserved youth who visit the aquarium for free each year in partnership with Oklahoma Aquarium Foundation. There was a small group of bloggers that I followed and dvafoto was one of them. They were very active back then and would write about issues and controversies in the photojournalism community. Student Profile -- David Weiss Interned with NASA and Dreams of Going to Mars

Undergraduate Research

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 12, 2012 2:42

Forget heading home for the holidays, David Kutai Weiss '12 spent his winter break at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah, simulating a visit to the Red Planet. For two weeks, the College of Charleston senior and his research colleagues lived in a tiny shelter in Utah in the middle of nowhere. Per simulation rules, going outside required them to don space suits and exit via an airlock. Travel across the desert could take place only on all-terrain vehicles, which are the closest equivalent to NASA Rovers. Maybe most taxing of all the rules, though, were the dietary restrictions: For the entire stay, Weiss and his crew could only eat dried food. One day, Weiss expects to make similar sacrifices during a real visit to Mars. As of Fall 2012, he'll begin a Ph. D. program in planetary geosciences at Brown University, with an ultimate goal of becoming an astronaut. At the College of Charleston, Weiss gained valuable preparatory experience for such an endeavor by lining up two summer internships with NASA and by taking a NASA mission design class taught by Professor Cass Runyon. During this class, Weiss and his College of Charleston classmates partnered with students in Alabama and France to design a hypothetical $800 million space mission. Their proposal was so good, Runyon gushes, judges were wondering if it was made not by students, but by professional scientists and engineers. Weiss credits the College of Charleston's geology department for giving him a strong science foundation as he pursues an advanced degree and his professional goals. Following his return from the Mars Desert Research Station, he was able to prepare maps at the College that pinpointed water sources in the desert and terrain that was friendly to Rovers. These same experiments, he explained, will likely be repeated by astronauts that land on Mars in the coming decades. And, if Weiss gets his way, he'll be among those pioneering men and women.
