Humans have long encountered experiences that challenge their rational ideas about the world. Encounters with angels, demons, fairies, gnomes, or other spirits have been the standards of folklore since time immemorial. We agree with Jung that these revelations are scientifically valuable, though best explored though any lens but materialism; i.e. physics. When we learn about common bizarre experiences, we learn about ourselves. Author Ogi Ogas joins us again, alongside Qualia Research Institute's Andrés Gómez Emilsson, to discuss close encounters with the modern version of those elusive, yet timeless, entities. We begin with the phenomenological approaches to studying consciousness. We then compare both guest's experience with non-human minds. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! Programledare: Martin WicklinProducent: Filip BohmKontakt: sondagsintervjun@sr.se
In this guided meditation, Andrés will lead you through a transformative journey that includes the following elements:A factorization of experience into three main channels with their corresponding inner and outer versions: "see," "hear," and "feel."Utilizing your energy body as an antenna capable of perceiving both shapes and frequencies of internal representations, exploring the duality between form and vibration in the phenomenal world.Understanding symmetry and smooth geometry as the fundamental basis for valence.Recognizing consonance, dissonance, and noise as tools to assess the valence of our world-simulation.Learning a variety of practical strategies to address phenomenal dissonance effectively.Enjoy this profound exploration!Relevant links/references:High-Valence Meditation - https://qualiacomputing.com/2021/12/03/high-valence-meditation/Michael Johnson's Principia Qualia - Introduction to the Symmetry Theory of Valence, valence structuralism, and qualia formalism - https://opentheory.net/principia-qualia/The Consonance Disonance Noise Signature framework first introduced by Andrés Gómez Emilsson in Quantifying Bliss - https://qri.org/blog/quantifying-blissThe Symmetry Theory of Valence (@The Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London) - https://youtu.be/tSPZ4xt5f2kNeural Annealing by Michael Johnson - https://

In episode 32 of the quantum consciousness series, Justin Riddle interviews Andres Gomez-Emilsson, the director of research of the Qualia Research Institute. Andres is passionate about understanding qualia, which is the feeling and quality of subjective experience. In this interview, we discuss many of Andres' theories: mathematical fictionalism, symmetry of valence theory, neural annealing as it pertains to psychedelic therapy, and antitolerance medications to reduce suffering. First up, we discuss the nature of qualia and whether or not there can be a universal mathematical description of subjective experience. Andres posits that the experience of having a thought should not be confused with the thought itself. Therefore, any attempt at mathematical description will be wrapped up within the experience of the person suggesting the mathematics. As he states, mathematics is as real as the Lord of the Rings, a great story that we can tell, but not to be confused with reality itself. Next up, we discuss his symmetry of valence theory which describes that the imagination of certain geometric patterns imbues a sense of well-being whereas other patterns are anxiogenic. The geometric patterns that lead to positive valence (positive emotional experiences) are those shapes recognized as sacred geometry. However, Andres cautions that because these “sacred” geometric shapes generate well-being, people have used this reproducible experience to peddle New Age metaphysics. We should be cautious of the ability to generate positive experience as it can be used to manipulate people into buying into particular belief systems. Third, we discuss recent findings that single dose psilocybin in a therapeutic context can produce a lasting reduction in symptoms of depression. Andres posits that this could be explained as a form of neural annealing. The mind “heats up” and breaks through discordant neural pathways and through neural plasticity during the psychedelic experience will allow for the formation of new neural pathways with higher resonant properties consistent with positive valence. This contributes to Andres' overall ontological model of reality in which the universe is a unified field of experience that is pinched off into individuals. Here, he starts with an unbroken unity of all things that is topologically segmented into individuals. Finally, Andres is a devout hedonist with the long-term goal of reducing suffering. His group at the Qualia Research Institute is investigating medications that reduce adaptation to molecules over long-term use. Go check out Andres' YouTube channel and the Qualia Research Institute website!

In this episode, Andrés Gómez Emilsson from the Qualia Research Institute presents the Symmetry Theory of Valence (STV) to Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris and his team at The Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London.
In this episode, we discuss with the ontology of reality with Andrés Gómez Emilsson from the Qualia Research Institute, Daniel Ingram from the Emergent Phenomenology Research Consortium (EPRC), and Frank Yang (body-builder turned meditator). This conversation was very fruitful, given that Daniel and Frank are advanced and accomplished meditators with a vast experience base that informs their understanding of what is possible in the realm of consciousness. We explore various QRI paradigms and test their explanatory power and consistency with the first-person experience of Daniel and Frank.

This is: Effective altruism in the garden of ends, published by tyleralterman on August 31, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Huge thanks to Alex Zhu, Anders Sandberg, Andrés Gómez Emilsson, Andrew Roberts, Anne-Lorraine Selke (who I've subbed in entire sentences from), Crichton Atkinson, Ellie Hain, George Walker, Jesper Östman, Joe Edelman, Liza Simonova, Kathryn Devaney, Milan Griffes, Morgan Sutherland, Nathan Young, Rafael Ruiz, Tasshin Fogelman, Valerie Zhang, and Xiq for reviewing or helping me develop my ideas here. Further thanks to Allison Duettmann, Anders Sandberg, Howie Lempel, Julia Wise, and Tildy Stokes, for inspiring me through their lived examples. I did not believe that a Cause which stood for a beautiful ideal [.] should demand the denial of life & joy. – Emma Goldman, Living My Life This essay is a reconciliation of moral commitment and the good life. Here is its essence in two paragraphs: Totalized by an ought, I sought its source outside myself. I found nothing. The ought came from me, an internal whip toward a thing which, confusingly, I already wanted – to see others flourish. I dropped the whip. My want now rested, commensurate, amidst others of its kind – terminal wants for ends-in-themselves: loving, dancing, and the other spiritual requirements of my particular life. To say that these were lesser seemed to say, “It is more vital and urgent to eat well than to drink or sleep well.” No – I will eat, sleep, and drink well to feel alive; so too will I love and dance as well as help. Once, the material requirements of life were in competition: If we spent time building shelter it might jeopardize daylight that could have been spent hunting. We built communities to take the material requirements of life out of competition. For many of us, the task remains to do the same for our spirits. Particularly so for those working outside of organized religion on huge, consuming causes. I suggest such a community might practice something like “fractal altruism,” taking the good life at the scale of its individuals out of competition with impact at the scale of the world. If you're a Blinkist or Sparknotes person, you can stop here. If you read on, you might find that everything written has been said already in the history of philosophy. This is a less rigorous experiential account that came from five years of personal reckoning. I thought my own story might be more relatable for friends with a history of devotion – unusual people who've found themselves dedicating their lives to a particular moral vision, whether it was (or is) Buddhism, Christianity, social justice, or climate activism. When these visions gobble up all other meaning in the life of their devotees, well, that sucks. I go through my own history of devotion to effective altruism. It's the story of [wanting to help] turning into [needing to help] turning into [living to help] turning into [wanting to die] turning into [wanting to help again, because helping is part of a rich life]. There's also an implicit critique of the Effective Altruist movement here. As far as I can tell, my dark night experience represents a common one for especially devoted, or “hardcore” EAs – the type who end up in mission-critical roles. If my experience is in fact representative, then I suspect it is productive (even on consequentialist grounds) for the movement to confront its dark night problem. Of course, there has been much discussion about burnout and mental health in EA. The movement has responded: there are support groups and more. But I doubt that ordinary mental health interventions – therapy, coaching, etc – are sufficient for hardcore EAs. Instead, I think that hardcore segments of the movement, who are bound by philosophy, might be helped by examining whether their philosophy is, in fact, in agreement, rathe...

Support the scientific revolution: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB What is the dividing line between the feeling of sitting in a fluorescently lit cubicle vs flying down the Gold Coast, sea foam in your hair and music in your ears? Obviously almost everything, but where is the root of the subjective emotional experience, the qualia, come from? Andrés Gómez Emilsson, director of research at the Qualia Research Institute, suggests that it lives in the harmonic patterns of the brain. Enjoyable experiences can be understood as consonant resonances, negative ones as dissonant, disorganized ones. He and his colleagues are working on a mathematical model of experience - both the mundane and the transcendent, as they are informed in their work by the hyperbolic geometry of DMT and other psychedelic substances. The goal, at the end of the day, is to create a functional map of human experience so complete that it can help eliminate unnecessary suffering. #consciousness #consciousplanet #neuroscience Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci: https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S PODCAST INFO: Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Kidney stone pain as a potential cause area, published by Dan Elton on May 3, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a cross-post from my Substack (original post here). Note: At the Effective Altruism Global: San Francisco conference in 2017, Prof. Will MacAskill implored the audience to “keep EA weird”. As the EA movement grows, it's important to keep EA's original spirit of exploration alive. To help do that, I'm planning to write several articles on potential new — and weird — cause areas. Effective altruists want to figure out how to do the most good per dollar spent. “Good” is often cached out in terms of deaths prevented or quality-adjusted life years saved (QALYs). QALYs attempt to adjust life-years for different states of health. However, the very method of QALY calculation, which typically involves surveys asking about trade-offs, might have some blind spots. For instance, if a disease state is rare, than most likely the requisite survey data for it has never been collected. The surveys themselves may have blind spots too. Consider these points from Andrés Gómez Emilsson (emphasis mine): “Someone described the experience of having a kidney stone as ‘indistinguishable from being stabbed with a white-hot-glowing knife that's twisted into your insides non-stop for hours'. It's likely that the reason why we do not hear about this is because (1) trauma often leads to suppressed memories, (2) people don't like sharing their most vulnerable moments, and (3) memory is state-dependent (you cannot easily recall the pain of kidney stones .. you've lost a tether/handle/trigger for it, as it is an alien state-space on a wholly different scale of intensity than everyday life).” Andres Gomez Emilsson As Daniel Kahneman describes in his book Thinking Fast and Slow, the remembering self is different than the experiencing self. People have trouble describing and conceptualizing extreme events, either positive or negative. People also don't like thinking about extreme negative events generally, whether they experienced them or others did. I personally sometimes notice my brain flinching away when thinking about kidney stone pain, even though I haven't experienced it myself. In the first part of this post I'll go over the evidence for extreme pain events. Then, I'll focus on kidney stones. The main reason for focusing on kidney stone pain is that over the past two years I've worked off-an-on on automated deep learning based software for detecting and measuring kidney stones in CT scans (see my paper in Medical Physics). So I have some expertise on the subject. Currently I am working with a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hopsital who is an expert on stone disease, Prof. Avinash Kambadakone. Background - suffering focused ethics “In my opinion human suffering makes a direct moral appeal, namely, the appeal for help, while there is no similar call to increase the happiness of a man who is doing well anyway.” “Instead of the greatest happiness for the greatest number, one should demand, more modestly, the least amount of avoidable suffering for all.”— Karl Popper, The Open Society and Its Enemies (1945) The idea that we should focus on eliminating suffering over increasing pleasure is intuitive to many people. See this recent Twitter poll from Robin Hanson: So, I don't think I need to spend much time here convincing people that reducing suffering should take precedent over increasing happiness. Note what I have in mind here is what is called “weakly-negative utilitarianism” which is quite different than pure negative utilitarianism, which focuses only on eliminating suffering. Readers interested in diving further into these topics should check out Lukas Gloor's essay “The Case for Suffering-Focused Ethics”. Background - long-tailed distributions of pleasure and pain “...

Andrés Gómez Emilsson of the Qualia Research Institute joins Brendan to discuss "the universal plot": what's it all about and what matters most? Andrés says the big story is one of consciousness vs. pure replicators, the struggle to resist brute, value-neutral replication processes and maximize instead the positive valence possibilities of universal consciousness. Andrés considers how this narrative emerges as the most nuanced and developmentally advanced of the various ethical stories of the past (compared to "Good vs. Evil," for instance), and considers some of the theoretical/philosophical axioms on which it's based. What then is the relationship between consciousness and replication? How do we ensure we privilege positive conscious states over parasitic replication? How does it relate to the evolution of consciousness, and avoid the pitfalls of asceticism? 0:00 Introduction 2:21 The Universal Plot at Different Levels 16:17 What is the Relationship of Consciousness to Replication? 24:07 What is the Source of Valence if not the Replication Impulse? 26:55 What is the Telos of the Evolution of Consciousness? 30:44 Integrating Replication with Consciousness 36:48 Towards Omega: How do We Engineer Paradise? 48:13 Critique 1: Evolutionary Complexity vs. Human Intellectual Hubris 54:00 Critique 2: Is this Just Gnosticism 2.0? 57:18 A Developmental Metanarrative "A Universal Plot - Consciousness vs. Pure Replicators: Gene Servants or Blissful Autopoietic Beings?" video mentioned in the podcast: https://youtu.be/nGmETz-wDMc "The Universal Plot: Consciousness vs. Pure Replicators" blog post mentioned in the podcast: https://www.qualiaresearchinstitute.org/blog/universal-plot

https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/jhanas-and-the-dark-room-problem The Dark Room Problem in neuroscience goes something like this: suppose the brain is minimizing prediction error, or free energy, or whatever. You can minimize lots of things by sitting quietly in a dark room. Everything will be very, very predictable. So how come people do other things? The usual workaround is inbuilt biological drives, considered as "set points". You "predict" that you will be well-fed, so getting hungry registers as prediction error and brings you out of your dark room to eat. Et cetera. Andrés Gómez Emilsson recently shared a perspective I hadn't considered before, which is: actually, sitting quietly in a dark room is really great. The Buddha discussed states of extreme bliss attainable through meditation: Secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, a bhikkhu enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by thought and examination, with rapture and happiness born of seclusion (Samyutta Nikaya) I had always figured that "sensual pleasures" here meant things like sex. But I think maybe he just means stimuli, full stop. The meditator cuts themselves from all sensory stimuli, eg by meditating really hard on a single object like the breath and ignoring everything else, and as a result gets "rapture and happiness born of seclusion".
Should pleasure and pain be measured on logarithmic scales? How might such a scale affect utilitarian calculations? How do harmonic energy waves in the brain correspond to states of (or intensities of) consciousness? What sorts of conclusions can we draw about brain states given the resolutions and sampling rates of tools like fMRI, EEG, and MEG? What is the symmetry theory of homeostatic regulation, and how does it connect to pleasure and pain? Are uncomfortable or confused mental states computationally useful to us? To what extent can the concepts of musical consonance and dissonance map onto energy states in the brain? On this episode of the Utilitarian Podcast, I talk with Andres Gomez Emilsson who is co-director of research at the Qualia Research Institute. The Qualia Research Institute is a non-profit whose goal is to study consciousness in a scientifically rigorous way. This podcast begins with a presentation that Andres gave to a group at The Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London The presentation is about the Symmetry theory of valence, which is a possible explanation of why experiences feel good or bad. If you’d like to skip straight to my conversation with Andres, you can skip forward approximately an hour and 2 minutes. In this conversation, we briefly sketch the Symmetry Theory of Valence, and discuss valence as the basis for morality. I ask Andres a number of critical questions about studying consciousness scientifically - isn’t consciousness extremely vague, how did consciousness evolve, how do we rely on people’s reports about their experiences. We also talk about the connection between the value that we assign to objects in the world, and how we might be misleading ourselves by doing do. Then we talk about how we might improve valence in the future, and Andres mentions an exciting project they’re working on at Qualia Research Institute. We talk about the long-term future of valence in the universe, and the influence of AI. Finally, we discuss a comprehensive world view involving conflict between consciousness and what Andres calls pure replicators - during which we also discuss the nature of personal identity. If you find these ideas interesting, I encourage you to donate to Qualia Research institute, at qualiaresearchinstitute.org/donate. Among other things, this would help them empirically test the Symmetry Theory of Valence.
Andrés Gómez Emilsson is Director of Research at, and co-founder of, the Qualia Research Institute where he works with algorithm design, psychedelic theory, neurotechnology, and mapping the computational properties of consciousness, to name several. He has a master’s degree in Computational Psychology; worked professionally with graph theory, statistics, and affective science; and blogs at QualiaComputing.com. Many psychedelics produce visual tracers. To find out more about these phenomena and how they relate to iboga, I invite Andrés on the podcast to discuss psychedelic-induced tracers, trails, and stroboscopic effects, and he speaks about his and colleagues’ relatively new computer program called Tracer Replication Tool. Topics of our discussion include: Qualia Research Institute; sober, psychedelic, and iboga tracers; micromorts; “psychedelic cryptography”; the Tracer Replication Tool and how you too can document your tracer experiences; iboga tracer phenomenology; (auto)stereograms; the time-like texture of consciousness related to tracers; and Andrés boldly posits that controlling a substance’s tracer effects might allow one to control the world-building process of that substance. What are nanomedicines? And how are they different from traditional ones? In this episode of Science on surfaces we talk to we talk to Dr. Gustav Emilsson about the fascinating area of nanomedicines. Dr. Emilsson is working as a Postdoc with nanomedicine development at the department of Advanced drug delivery in Pharmaceutical Science at AstraZeneca, a global, science-led biopharmaceutical company. We start out by talking about what nanomedicines are and how they work. Dr. Emilsson explains how intricate design of these minuscule drug carriers can help overcome challenges such as drug toxicity and solubility issues, and how nanomedicines can be used to control the drug release in the body. We also talk about a phenomenon that is very relevant in the context of nanomedicines - the formation of the so-called protein corona, which affects how the drug delivery vessel interacts with the body. And finally, Dr. Emilsson shares some thoughts on what the future looks like for this intriguing area. Thanks for listening! In today's episode of Waking Cosmos I'm joined by the philosopher and consciousness researcher Andrés Gómez Emilsson. He is the director of research at the Qualia Research Institute, and the cofounder and president of the Stanford Transhumanist Association. We discuss Andrés' views about consciousness, and how it could be a deep and fundamental part of the universe (panpsychism). We explore how shifting our perception of identity to consciousness may profoundly transform our civilization, and prepare us for an unimaginable future in the universe. We talk about the psychedelic renaissance and how it is opening us up to radical new perspectives about consciousness and identity, and we also discuss what truths if any, might be glimpsed through psychedelic and altered states. We also explore Andrés' extraordinary view that subjective states of wellbeing, also known as positive valence, disclose the utility function of the universe itself. Dell Technologies sponsored this podcast. Enterprises worldwide are often revamping their IT organizations amid the great shift to cloud native infrastructures and the ongoing effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. In the New Stack Makers podcast, Jonas Emilsson, concept manager for hybrid platforms for Atea, discusses the impact on his firm's delivery of IT infrastructure solutions services for its main customer base in Europe and the Baltics. One macro trend Emilsson has observed is how the role of the developer has changed as DevOps adopts software-defined datacenters and Kubernetes. “We've seen a greater change in the market in terms of how customers and users, in general, are using the technologies,” Emilsson said. “A lot of it lies within the software-defined data center, of course. We thus do a lot of business with self-service portals and automation.”

[Update: Episodes will be coming out every 4 days. Due to coronavirus, it's difficult to record shows and I'm doing my best to not record remote episodes with exceptions like this one where the guest is spectacular. As soon as the quarantine is over, episodes will be back to every other day!] Andrés Gómez Emilsson is a consciousness researcher at the Qualia Research Institute. Previously, he worked at AI companies such as Kanjoya and Klout, with research topics of emotional classification with computational techniques and pragmatics. He founded the Stanford Transhumanist Association while working on his undergraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science, and later a Masters in Computational Psychology at Stanford. He comes on the show to speak about pleasure, pain, consciousness., and all of my favorite things! This show actually changed my mind on a lot of things, and he talked me into ordering a SubPac which should arrive next week. Overall an absolute blast of a show and I look forward to recording a show with Andrés in person once the Corona quarantine is over. In the 1984 book Reasons and Persons, philosopher Derek Parfit asks the reader to consider the following scenario: You step into a teleportation machine that scans your complete atomic structure, annihilates you, and then relays that atomic information to Mars at the speed of light. There, a similar machine recreates your exact atomic structure and composition using locally available resources. Have you just traveled, Parfit asks, or have you committed suicide? Would you step into this machine? Is the person who emerges on Mars really you? Questions like these –– those that explore the nature of personal identity and challenge our commonly held intuitions about it –– are becoming increasingly important in the face of 21st century technology. Emerging technologies empowered by artificial intelligence will increasingly give us the power to change what it means to be human. AI enabled bio-engineering will allow for human-species divergence via upgrades, and as we arrive at AGI and beyond we may see a world where it is possible to merge with AI directly, upload ourselves, copy and duplicate ourselves arbitrarily, or even manipulate and re-program our sense of identity. Are there ways we can inform and shape human understanding of identity to nudge civilization in the right direction? Topics discussed in this episode include: -Identity from epistemic, ontological, and phenomenological perspectives -Identity formation in biological evolution -Open, closed, and empty individualism -The moral relevance of views on identity -Identity in the world today and on the path to superintelligence and beyond You can find the page and transcript for this podcast here: https://futureoflife.org/2020/01/15/identity-and-the-ai-revolution-with-david-pearce-and-andres-gomez-emilsson/ Timestamps: 0:00 - Intro 6:33 - What is identity? 9:52 - Ontological aspects of identity 12:50 - Epistemological and phenomenological aspects of identity 18:21 - Biological evolution of identity 26:23 - Functionality or arbitrariness of identity / whether or not there are right or wrong answers 31:23 - Moral relevance of identity 34:20 - Religion as codifying views on identity 37:50 - Different views on identity 53:16 - The hard problem and the binding problem 56:52 - The problem of causal efficacy, and the palette problem 1:00:12 - Navigating views of identity towards truth 1:08:34 - The relationship between identity and the self model 1:10:43 - The ethical implications of different views on identity 1:21:11 - The consequences of different views on identity on preference weighting 1:26:34 - Identity and AI alignment 1:37:50 - Nationalism and AI alignment 1:42:09 - Cryonics, species divergence, immortality, uploads, and merging. 1:50:28 - Future scenarios from Life 3.0 1:58:35 - The role of identity in the AI itself This podcast is possible because of the support of listeners like you. Andrés Gómez Emilsson is the Director of Research at the Qualia Research Institute (QRI). QRI aims to systematize the study of consciousness, to do to consciousness what chemistry did for alchemy. He holds a master's degree in computational psychology and an undergraduate degree in symbolic systems from Stanford University, where he co-founded the Stanford Transhumanist Association. This is a pretty wild episode touching on some of the most important and mind-bending ideas I've ever encountered, centered around a single question: why can't we be happy all the time? We get into some pretty wacky territory but I think Andrés does a good job of making this approachable to somebody who has never encountered these ideas before. We use the term intuition pump a few times, this is a word coined by the philosopher Daniel Dennett to describe a thought experiment that helps the thinker use their intuition to develop an answer to a problem. We cover: Andrés's life project to overcome all the mechanisms that prevent us from being happy all the time, the hedonic treadmill, the promise of anti-tolerance drugs, the influence of genetics on our ability to be happy, how electric stimulation of the brain doesn't lead to tolerance the way drugs do, wireheading done right and wrong, three types of euphoria, the social gulf between Bay Area life-optimizers and everyone else, negative utilitarianism, the worst and best experiences humans have, the therapeutic and scientific potential for 5-meo-dmt, psychedelics as Effective Altruism's cause X, the best way to use ibogaine for treating opiate addiction, a better approach to using opiates for pain management, and why people report wacky new beliefs after ego dissolving psychedelic experiences Links: Simon and Garfunkel song: Richard Cory Andrés's article: Wireheading Done Right: Stay Positive Without Going Insane Book excerpt describing electrodes placed in the brains of mental patients in the 1950s: The Orgasmic Brain 84% of drug users who report a bad trip say they benefited from the experience NYMag: Psychedelic Mushrooms Cured My Cluster Headaches NY Public Radio interview on how Harry Anslinger started the war on drugs The Qualia Research Institute (QRI) QRI executive director Mike Johnson's blog: Opentheory.net

Consciousness is a concept which is at the forefront of much scientific and philosophical thinking. At the same time, there is large disagreement over what consciousness exactly is and whether it can be fully captured by science or is best explained away by a reductionist understanding. Some believe consciousness to be the source of all value and others take it to be a kind of delusion or confusion generated by algorithms in the brain. The Qualia Research Institute takes consciousness to be something substantial and real in the world that they expect can be captured by the language and tools of science and mathematics. To understand this position, we will have to unpack the philosophical motivations which inform this view, the intuition pumps which lend themselves to these motivations, and then explore the scientific process of investigation which is born of these considerations. Whether you take consciousness to be something real or illusory, the implications of these possibilities certainly have tremendous moral and empirical implications for life's purpose and role in the universe. Is existence without consciousness meaningful? In this podcast, Lucas spoke with Mike Johnson and Andrés Gómez Emilsson of the Qualia Research Institute. Andrés is a consciousness researcher at QRI and is also the Co-founder and President of the Stanford Transhumanist Association. He has a Master's in Computational Psychology from Stanford. Mike is Executive Director at QRI and is also a co-founder. Mike is interested in neuroscience, philosophy of mind, and complexity theory. Topics discussed in this episode include: -Functionalism and qualia realism -Views that are skeptical of consciousness -What we mean by consciousness -Consciousness and casuality -Marr's levels of analysis -Core problem areas in thinking about consciousness -The Symmetry Theory of Valence -AI alignment and consciousness You can take a very short survey about the podcast here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YWHDFV7

"There is a limitless horizon of possible mental experiences, pregnant with unimaginable value and significance." Please consider supporting Waking Cosmos on Patreon~ https://www.patreon.com/wakingcosmos The nature of consciousness is among the most profound mysteries humans have encountered. And yet, whether we think that consciousness reflects a fundamental feature of reality, or a mere illusion, we do know, at least in our case, that brains are involved. We also know that changes made to our brains correlate with dramatic changes in consciousness. As scientific and technological development continues, we're likely to gain much greater ability to retune this biological instrument, and potentially gain access to a much broader variety of possible conscious states. Future augmentation of brains could open us to a limitless horizon of mental experiences, pregnant with unimaginable value and significance. When mind itself is stretched across the canvas, what will we want to want? What values will guide such minds? One thinker who is exploring these questions is the philosopher Andrés Gómez Emilsson, who I was honored to interview on the Waking Cosmos podcast. In this conversation we discussed the universal drives of self-creating minds, the elusive nature of consciousness, the recent rise of panpsychist theories, and the power of psychedelics for exploring psychic space. Perhaps the issue that most animates Andrés is the nature of happiness and its relationship to suffering. Do we need the depths of suffering in order to experience the heights of ecstasy? Will it one day be possible to “engineer away” all suffering through technology? And if so, can we really be happy all the time “without going insane?” My conversation with Andres was truly mind-expanding for me, and I hope it will be the first of many. Andres Gomez Emilsson is a consciousness researcher and data science engineer with a Master's in computational psychology from Stanford University. He is a member of the Qualia Research Institute and runs the blog Qualia Computing. My friend James Ormrod joined me to chat with Andres about many different aspects of his work and passion: What qualia are and the goals of Qualia Computing; transhumanist philosophy and why philosophy is important; questions of spirituality, happiness and personal identity; the current state of consciousness research, the hard and important questions in the field and Andres' outlook for the future; theories of time and time perception; why boredom is interesting; psychedelics and inherent geometries found within altered states; Andres' thoughts on Ibogaine, opiates and lesser known psychedelics; non-drug consciousness technologies; the philosophy of David Pearce and why we should eliminate suffering via technology; and a few sneaky tangents as per usual. Image from Andre's TwitterShow notes and links hereCorrections: From Andres: " By the way, I realized I screwed up about the "real problem of consciousness". Here is a little correction:- The ‘real problem‘ of consciousness is whether consciousness has crisp formal structure, or not;- The ‘important problem‘ of consciousness is what makes some experiences feel better than others. As you can see, 'important' is the one involving hedonic tone and taking care of ethics. 'Real', instead, is an allusion to the fact that formalizing the solvable problems of consciousness, a science of qualia will redefine our framework to talk about any "hard problem of consciousness". And this is not a way to dismiss the importance of consciousness. Rather, it is for the purpose of having a granular language to discuss it and establish value equivalences across other-wise unintelligible qualia varieties." In episode three we speak with Andres Gomez Emilsson, founder of the Qualia Research Institute. In Andres' words: "Once we recognize the computational role of consciousness, and the causal network that links it to behavior, a new era will begin. We will (1) characterize the various values of qualia in terms of their computational properties, and (2) systematically explore the state-space of possible conscious experiences. (1) will enable us to recruit the new qualia varieties we discover thanks to (2) so as to improve the capabilities of our minds. This increased cognitive power will enable us to do (2) more efficiently. This positive-feedback loop is perhaps the most important game-changer in the evolution of consciousness in the cosmos. We will go from cognitive sciences to actual consciousness engineering. And then, nothing will ever feel the same."
