In this episode, we have Brian Kim (B.Kim). B.Kim is a singer-songwriter, music producer, and dancer who grew up in the Northern Virginia area. Growing up music has always been a part of his life. It all started with old-school R&B music, introduced by older friends, and K-Pop. Both of these factors are key initial influences on why B.Kim is who he is now. It wasn't until the first day of his first 9-5 job that he realized music was more than the silly song covers and troll dance videos he posted. While taking it more seriously, that's when he learned how to produce, mix, and create full songs. He has also performed live in Virginia, Washington D.C., New York City, and more both musically and with his dance team. He is now living in New York City and finding more inspiration and making more moves to eventually make music his ultimate career. Nick & Victor sit down with JT Tsui where they discuss his journey from developing himself and others in the physical realm and then taking the same attitude to develop people's mental health and spiritual well-being. In this episode, we talked about: [02:29] What is a Badass Asian Dude to JT [03:47] JT's background in physical education allowed him to develop students into full-fledged athletes. However, becoming a competitive athlete is as much of a mental game as it is a physical one.Time in education allowed JT to embrace self-development creating a to shift towards mental health and spiritual well-being [08:34] As much as the athlete's mindset and discipline can help with succeeding with long term goals, it is using this example JT warns of the duality of character traits. While the athletic mindset can be leveraged to great effect to improve yourself and overcome obstacles, it also leaves you to be unable to turn off where it removes you from other important activities such as being fully present with family and friends. [09:30] Deep self-reflection is what JT credits to sparking the change in his behaviours, believing self-reflection is the key to gathering awareness of who you are. With genuine introspection it allows one to prioritise their values and focus more energy into creating more time with what is important to the individual.  Consequently, introspection and defining your vision will allow you the power to take ownership of your values and sense of self, which in turns leads to more deliberate action in your own life. [13:35] JT comments that prioritising, permitting yourself to take breaks, and time management is essential to begin the process of self-reflection and taking ownership in your life. Warnings of allowing time for growth and not being so fixated on the time duration is the key to long term commitment of this journey.  Furthermore, being objective with yourself and examining yourself without judgement will enable you to explore suppressed emotions and experiences, as well as thoroughly reflect on how developed behaviours may have been influenced by others. Only after reconciling what can be extremely difficult emotions and experiences can we begin to take the next steps towards developing better mental and spiritual well-being. [19:52] Challenging how we think, act and behave and creating permanent changes can be extremely troublesome, however, JT believes one of the most important aspects is the need to create your vision and then use your vision as your guiding North Star.  Listeners should take particular note where Victor comments that the journey does not have to be an independent one and can be undertaken with others where you can find support, as well as further opportunities to explore and reflect. It is common knowledge that Asian culture and its influence can create obstacles to pursuing your path, where these flawed beliefs can take form in the way of generational parental conditioning.  So it is important to do as Bruce Lee once said and use these teachable moments to take the good and leave the bad to better develop the future generations. As a father, JT uses everyday moments with his children to create better conversations, engagement, and opportunities to take ownership of their own lives. [32:44] The Next Generation. In this section, JT talks about the need and benefits of guiding children and young adults to develop strategies to take more ownership in their lives. With mindfulness being the first step to developing the necessary self-awareness to develop further positive habits and momentum. On the other hand, JT also expands upon the organisational and political barriers to developing mental wellness in educational institutions. [39:17] As the three discuss the benefits of positive momentum, JT points out that a positive mindset and attitude about oneself is key before the positive momentum can start...

In the latest podcast, Seibo joins Rob to discuss why men should continue to develop EQ, his journey to get to where he is now and commentary on the benefits and potential pitfalls.  02:09 - Intro Rob explains his process of being a relationship coach where he supports men to open up and engage in areas of their emotional intelligence they are deficient in. Whether that be social, personal and work life, Rob can help.  03:21 - What Does BAD Mean To Rob? Interestingly this definition changed over time for Rob, from traditionally badass beliefs expected from society to increasing importance on character values and emotional connection. Listeners should note the importance of staying true to the values you, and only you believe in but then having the fortitude to stand tall when your values are challenged from all sides.  05:26 - Origins of a King In this section Rob explains his embarrassing story; the feelings of shame and the guilt of being ugly felt during his first rejection led him to take those first steps to develop himself and become the person he is now.  Identifying and taking ownership of his shortcomings led him to refine his relationship skills and incorporate social frameworks. Rob shares that even after developing these social skills you are still not guaranteed success; even after finding success, Rob continued to experience empty interactions which eventually lead to suicidal thoughts.  Rob's experience can be quite relatable to other Asian men and highlights the dangers of neglecting all of our emotions or refusal to confront past trauma which can negatively shape our character. Rob commented that strength to express the full range of emotions to the fullest and embrace this side created vibrancy in life he didn't have before - as men, it can be easy to fall into the trap to pursue complete mastery over our emotions, but in its pursuit can prevent us from being human.  12:36 - How to develop EQ  Rob and Seibo discuss how to take small, actionable steps to begin developing EQ. Many of the key areas require an honest dialogue with yourself such as your fears, forgiveness for an experience that can be seen as shameful and addressing negative self-worth. It should be said, many of these areas can be difficult to explore where it is important to move past the ego which can prevent you from exploring these negative emotions and taking steps to resolve them.  Character experience is developed through slow, incremental changes but with continual, positive experiences and breakthroughs. Over time you can make these changes, but it requires complete effort time. While the journey was long, in Rob's eyes it was worth it. 25:16 - Challenges of being an Asian man Taking this back to the topic of Asian men, the pair explore aspects of Asian men that can be beneficial or a barrier to developing EQ. The ability to conduct root cause analysis can quickly identify areas for improvement, but common traits such as being overly self-critical may inhibit progress.   29:41 - Transformative Change & Creating More Sustainable Relationships In the last big topic, Rob empathises the need to acknowledge mistakes and not to be overly calculated and curated, which can hinder your ability to create better human relationships. Rob's transformational change was attributed to his ability to express characteristics authentic to himself, taking true ownership of his values and flaws, as well as showing vulnerability; much akin to the characteristics of the Byronic Hero. Defining these traits also allowed him to screen people in his personal and love life to form higher quality communities aligned with his values.  If listeners are sceptical about expressing negative emotions, in Rob's experience it was these difficult experiences that created chances to create strong emotions and stronger bonds between parties.  54:46 - Where to find...

Connect with the coaches!Dori MeltonAs a Sex and Relationship Coach, my mission is to help people prioritize their pleasure as a way to deepen connection in their relationships. I'm a big fan of LOVE but I learned through my own personal experience that it isn't always enough. A few years ago my marriage of almost 30 years exploded and I was forced to go through the most difficult transition of my life. It was through that experience that I came to Somatica Sex & Relationship coaching. Although it was, at times, incredibly painful, I came away transformed and am currently living the life of my dreams, full of passion and more love than I imagined possible. I learned how to access and pursue my own desire and follow where that leads me. Today it has led me to help others like myself to go through similar transformations. A few of the areas that I specialize in are guiding individuals and couples in the journey of consensual non-monogamy and other alternative relationship paradigms and helping individuals explore their sexuality whether that is kink, BDSM, role play or the many other vast sex positive alternatives. I am open to all sexual orientations and identify as queer. I have a MA in Clinical Psychology and worked for 10 years with children and families. That experience has given me a firm foundation in understanding attachment theory and the ability to explore difficult topics in a non-judgmental, non-shaming, compassionate way.    Kai WuKai Wu is a guide and facilitator who works in the realms of love, sex, and familial and ancestral healing. For over a decade she has supported people of all kinds so they can experience greater connection, peace, and freedom in their bodies, relationships, and communities. She believes that cultivating a sense of belonging and pleasure is essential resilience practice for navigating these uncertain times.  Some of her specialties and interests include supporting folks through significant life transitions, illness and trauma, unwinding body shame, and sexual challenges (particularly around performance, low libido and pain). Although she welcomes people of all identities, cultures, gender expressions, orientations, abilities and bodies, she is especially passionate about supporting those who want to be lovingly and fiercely held as they step more fully and authentically onto their lifepaths and missions, folks who are Asian/POC , and those who want to engage in Chinese/Asian cultural reclamation work. Her work is rooted in somatics, science, the erotic and the sacred. It can sometimes be hands-on. It is always trauma-informed, loving, and compassionate. Play Episode Listen Later Jun 30, 2020 82:30

#017: Victor is an emotional intelligence coach for Asian men. He’s the host of the Human Up podcast as well as a co-host for Badass Asian Dudes. In this episode, we talk about the struggles of growing up in Asian cultures where men are not taught to properly express and deal with their emotions in a healthy manner, and how we can become better more effective individuals. This is sort of a general talk about emotional intelligence, just really touching the topic before I get deeper into it in future episodes. If you want, skip to 20:45 to get to the juicier parts. If this isn’t already obvious to you, self-awareness is key to becoming the best version of oneself. Being in touch with your emotions, knowing how and why you feel what you feel and how to deal with that in a positive productive manner is arguably one of the most important skillsets or mindsets you can have. You can heal past trauma. This applies to family, friendships, and business. I know as time goes on, I become better at controlling my emotions. More and more, I deal with people more openly, humbly, productively, positively, further unlocking my human potential instead of being locked down in my egoic past stories of who I am or what people are like or what I think they or the world should be. What I want for anyone listening to take away from this episode is that it’s okay to admit we’ve had problems with our family or our upbringings. I want us to speak more frankly and openly, so we’re not scared of dealing with our pasts. We don’t have to run away from ourselves, from the pain anymore. I grew up in a dysfunctional household, like so many other people, especially countless Asian families, especially Asian-American families. If your story is anything like mine at all, I want you to know that I feel your pain very deeply and it’s okay to seek forgiveness, to forgive others, and to heal and seek happiness within yourself. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it’s an opportunity for us as individuals to transcend our traumatic pasts in order to become excellent human beings who rise to the top. It’s always a work in progress, especially when it comes to improving one’s relationship with one’s parents, if you’ve had a traumatic relationship with them. I’ve found a working model of forgiveness, acceptance, and love. It’s not perfect, I’m not perfect, but I’m trying and I’m much better off for doing it. EVERY RECALL IS A REFRAME. I want to reframe all my past negative experiences with family and my culture as necessary events for me to become a kinder, more compassionate and empathetic realer person. Seek mentors! People whose lives seem to be in a dope spot, where you want to be. Go meet those people, hang out with them, and see if you can make your own version of a reality you want to live and experience. If you need help, well, you can always hit me up! By the way, I met Victor through the BAD Facebook Group. I found Erin Allan when searching for ganja yoga classes in Seattle. And boy was I stoked. If you’ve been following this podcast, you’ll know that I’ve been on an emotional health and spiritual journey the past two years, if not all my life. And cannabis and yoga, separately, has been a huge tool in helping me through it. Erin calls herself a reformed marriage and family therapist after 10 years in the counselling field. In her desire to help however, she found herself burning out, became overweight and depressed, and taking many medications to reduce the physical and emotional pain. At her low point, she decided to try cannabis, which became legal in the state of California, with the intention to escape. Instead, cannabis helped her drop right into the core of what she was feeling and everything became clear to her. Now she runs HR for a local dispensary and teaches ganja yoga at Kula Movement in the Ballard neighborhood in Seattle, WA. I went on a roadtrip this last week, all during a lockdown because of a global pandemic, as well as violent riots happening around the world because of yet another cold-blooded murder of an innocent black man by a white cop and other complicit cops of color. Seeing this brings up so many emotions from all different sides. And unfortunately, regardless of what side you’re on, those who can’t manage those emotions, even from a place of good intentions, end up behaving in very unproductive, unhealthy, even dangerous ways. I missed releasing an episode last week because I was on this road trip, but also because I needed time to really process all of this for myself. I still am. And I’m starting to develop my voice around it, without having any expectations of saying the “right” thing, or what I’m supposed to say. Just expressing the truth in what we feel for ourselves right now, which could be good things, positive things, seemingly irrelevant things. You might think your feelings are alone, but that doesn’t make it less real or important, or that it doesn’t deserve an outlet either. My outlet is to hop on here and let out a string of thoughts. In this episode, I talk to author, Katharine Chan about her new book, “How To Deal With Asian Parents.” I related to her stories about her parents (along with her research of the many other stories online) who were mostly unknowingly draining her mental and emotional health. Through the generational trauma, cultural gaps, and language barriers, it’s difficult for Asian parents and their children to properly communicate and really address the deeper emotions behind their words, which eventually takes a toll on the children’s wellbeing. If you struggle developing a relationship with your Asian parents, or want to be mindful about becoming a parent, this book and episode is for you. ------------------------------------- Resources: Read her book: https://amzn.to/3cUb7F1 Her website: https://sumonsleeve.com/ Connect with Katharine: https://www.instagram.com/sumonsleeve/ ------------------------------------- If you get value out of this podcast, please support me in maintaining the fees to keep the show and stories going: https://bit.ly/humanuppodcastdonation. This guy was born and raised in Paris, went to community college in California, started his own successful business and is now rocking the digital nomad life in Bangkok! This guy is a GAWD m8 and a true inspiration for young entrepreneurs and Asian dudes everywhere. Here are some takeaways Go for the ask. Don’t be afraid. For getting a great gift for someone, the edge you have over anyone is ATTENTION TO DETAIL. You gotta know the Five Love Languages, your own way and other people’s ways of receiving and giving love. I love to show and receive love in all five ways, and adapt according to the relationship. Don’t feel guilty for the ask, or for selling something. We talk about having the right intentions vs expectations. Don’t do something good for someone always EXPECTING to get something in return. Just treat people with the right intentions and do your best. Spread intent as much as possible, and give as much as possible, without intention. “Nobody owes you anything in life, businesswise, romantically, or financially." Be a great guy, just to be a great guy. Not just to get money, or get laid. Don’t spend your time networking with babies. Try to surround yourself with people are higher than you. The potential for the virtual summit industry. Anyone can dive into it right now! Being a knowledge broker. You can build authority just by being a knowledge broker, not an original content creator. That’s actually what I’m doing! Not only am I making original content, but offering a menagerie of different characters, ideas, and stories on this platform, for a specific audience, you. If a bum like me can do it, so can you! IF YOU WANNA DO A VIRTUAL SUMMIT, NOW’S THE TIME TO DO IT! Find people who are journey oriented, who appreciate the climb and share experiences with you that you can look back on together. Eric is amazing, not only because he’s brought tens of thousands of people around the world to virtual summits that have made him hundreds of thousands of dollars, but that he’s on his own awesome journey to reach his own personal summit, with all the meaningful relationships and experiences along the way. I’m on my own journey to my own personal summit. What is your personal summit? What is your dream high point? How do you want to get there? There’s no better time than now. He’s been summoned to the unique role of helping other Korean entrepreneurs get at the e-commerce game. Talented, funny, smart as a brain can smart, and business he can. Also, he’s one of the humblest people I’ve ever met. We talk about a range of things, including how Amazon is gonna take over Korea, and probably the world. Jeff Bezos is striving to be the best of all time. Just look at where Relentless.com redirects. We beseech you, Jeff Bezos, O Mighty Billionaire Gawd of Amazon, m8, Oh Long Johnson, please don’t hurt us! We love you. Also, Elon Musk is a meme lord. Also, Victor and I talk about being stuck in the Rat Race, as cogs in the global capitalist machine. Is it worth pursuing a piece of the pie when massive corporations are gobbling everything up? What value do I have to offer the world? These are questions I ask myself sometimes. Victor responds like a gawd! The world is not always stacked against me, or unfair against me. It can be stacked for me, unfair in your advantage. The universe can work for me if I just know how to deal with it. 이기는것 버릇이다. 지는것도 버릇이고.Winning is a habit. So is losing. I will make winning a habit for the rest of my life! What about you? I put a lot of heart and soul into the interview and production. I spent a lot of time! Yo! What's going on guys? New episode of Badass Asian Dudes. ‍ This week's guest is Andy Park, the founder of https://7till8.com/ (7till8). 7till8 makes custom fit surf and dive wetsuits tailored to your body's exact specifications. You just go on their website, send your measurements, and then they send you a custom wetsuit in a few weeks. You see this a lot with clothing for example suits, shirts, jackets - but i remember when Andy and his former business partner came up with this idea years back - I thought it was pretty genius because custom and made to measure clothing was getting big in those days. Of course just having an idea is nothing. The hardest part is executing it and actually turning it into something. But what do you do if you have no experience with wetsuits and you've never made a wetsuit before? And also how do you compete against the already established wetsuit companies out there like Body Glove, Billabong, and O'Neill that have been in the game for years? All they had was the idea of creating a custom wetsuit company. That's the position Andy and his former business partner were in. Some things we talk about in this episode: his https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/371716271/custom-fit-wetsuits (kickstarter strategy and how they raised 20k) creating a vision for your company key takeaways from his accelerator program what he would do if he started over from scratch Please share, subscribe, and if you really like the show, please leave us a 5 star review!
