David Belasco -- playwright, producer, impresario, theatre manager, and theatrical visionary -- was one of the most important names in the world of the Gilded Age stage.Beginning his life and career in San Francisco following the Gold Rush years, Belasco moved to New York to revolutionize how theatre was seen and produced in the last years of the 19th and into the 20th century. In addition to writing such hits as plays "Madame Butterfly" and "The Girl of the Golden West" which went on to become even more popular ad Puccini operas, he was responsible for launching the careers of Maude Adams (the first Peter Pan), Mary Pickford and Barbara Stanwyck. He was known for often wearing the robes and clerical collar of a Catholic priest, despite his Jewish heritage and thus began to call himself "The Bishop of Broadway". Belasco owned and operated today's Belasco Theatre on 44th St which continues to bear his name. The theatre, built in 1907, is home to current Broadway hits and still contains the once lavish apartment now abandoned in which he lived on the theatre's top floor. It's said that perhaps Belasco has never quite left his eponymous theatre and reports have persisted over the years of sightings and strange occurrences that indicate his possible presence even today.
Dylan and Connor are joined by Helen J Shen (Maybe Happy Ending, The Lonely Few). The star of this season's newest original Broadway musical, Maybe Happy Ending, kicks off spooky season with your favorite twins. On a cozy fall night after Helen's rehearsals, they hear all about the innovative show. Does co-starring with Darren Criss mean he spills on-set secrets from Glee and American Crime Story? Find out all of that PLUS the origins of the musical, working with Michael Arden, and thoughts about moving into the haunted Belasco Theatre. Spooookyyyyyy. We also dive into Helen's relationship with Andrew Barth Feldman (currently starring in Little Shop of Horrors). She spills on how they met and how their love blossomed during lockdown. They also share stories from the University of Michigan, performing in Teeth and The Lonely Few, and a little Rainbow Fish and Finding Nemo chatter. Building Moo-Mentum (A very unofficial How to Dance in Ohio Podcast) but again...Not the real one
Ep. 11: Conor Tague (Tommy) How to Dance in Ohio Broadway Musical My name is Conor Tague. I am an actor / singer and former student of the Professional Conservatory of Musical Theatre at New York Film Academy. I am also a person on the autism spectrum, diagnosed at a young age; however, this does not inhibit me in any way... It actually encourages me to work harder doing the thing that I love. I pick things up very quickly, I retain information, and I'm not afraid to commit fully to any character or circumstance. I have also been part of an original musical that has been in workshops and had a World Premiere at Syracuse Stage titled How To Dance In Ohio, based on the award winning documentary of the same name by Alexandra Shiva, where I originated the role of Tommy and will be reprising my role on Broadway this fall at the Belasco Theatre. Some things I enjoy doing are puppetry, impressions/character voices, I also create memes to post on my Instagram and TikTok, and I can quote a multitude of movies... just off the top of my head. Hope we get to work together soon! :) https://www.conortague.com/ About our How to Dance in Ohio Podcast Building Moo-Mentum is a very, very unofficial podcast about the Broadway Musical "How to Dance in Ohio". 00h 00’00” Take the a train – Duke Ellington 00h 02’47” PRESENTACIÓN 00h 04’17” CABECERA 00h 05’27” INICIO 00h 06’14” Overture 00h 11’07” Stranded again 00h 13’03” Saddle up the horse – On the 20th Century 00h 17’52” Where is the highest priest of the theatre? 00h 19’58” I rise again 00h 24’18” An angel of deliverance 00h 25’38” Oscar Jaffe/Lily Garland 00h 27’00” Indian maiden’s lament 00h 29’38” What’s your name child? 00h 30’56” Veronique 00h 37’51” I have written a play (Conductor) 00h 39’03” Together 00h 42’20” Never 00h 45’48” Oscar Jaffe he meant nothing to me 00h 46’20” Our private world 00h 50’45” Repent 00h 56’24” Mine 01h 02’55” I’ve got it all 01h 08’07” Entr’acte 01h 09’05” Life is like a train 01h 14’16” I have written a play (Congressman) 01h 15’44” Five zeros 01h 20’44” I have written a play (Doctor) 01h 21’27” An anthology of womankind 01h 24’12” Sign, Lily, Sign 01h 31’01” She’s a nut 01h 36’38” Max Jacobs 01h 37’35” My play by Somerset Maugham 01h 38’24” Babette 01h 44’53” Because of her 01h 50’06” Lily / Oscar 01h 53’46” I had to do it to save you 01h 54’56” Finale 01h 56’46” CONCLUSIONES Y ANÉCDOTAS 01h 59’50” The legacy 02h 05’41” Lily / Oscar – Judy Kaye & Rock Hudson 02h 08’04” AGRADECIMIENTOS Y DESPEDIDA 02h 08’42” Runaway train

May I approach the bench your honor? These slanderous accusations of my client being a trade thief are just preposterous and will not stand. Did Saturn meet Ginuwine and his team? Yes. Did Star create her own VIP section at the Belasco Theatre? Sure. And are they both Fully Charged? Certainly! But thieving trades? I think no— actually, may we have a brief recess your honor? It's time to grab a "window seat" and be on your best "model behavior" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 2017's Amélie and 2010's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown on episode fourteen of My Favorite Flop. ABOUT AMÉLIE Based on the 2001 French film of the same name, Amélie tells the story of a shy waitress who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while struggling with her own isolation. The musical features music by Daniel Messé, lyrics by Messé and Nathan Tysen, and a book by Craig Lucas. Following out-of-town tryouts at Berkeley Repertory and The Ahmanson, the musical finally opened to mixed reviews on Broadway on April 3, 2017. Despite praise for its cast and design elements, many critics found issue with the score, and the show struggled at the box office. When the show failed to receive any Tony nominations in an extremely competitive season, the show closed on May 21, 2017, after 27 previews and 56 regular performances. A substantially transformed production, with new orchestrations, an expanded repertoire of songs, and new staging in the actor/muso style, opened on the West End in December 2019, at the Other Palace. Critics praised its improvements on the Broadway version, with The Guardian describing it as "a triumph of adaptation" "high on imagination", while The Daily Telegraph lauded the "wonderful, wistful evening" it made. It was nominated for three awards at the 2020 Laurence Olivier Awards: Best New Musical, Best Original Score or New Orchestrations, and Best Actress in a Musical. Original Broadway Cast Phillipa Soo as Amélie Adam Chanler-Berat as Nino Tony Sheldon as Dufayel/Collignon David Andino as Blind Beggar/Garden Gnome/Anchorperson Randy Blair as Hipolito/Rock Star/Belgian Tourist Heath Calvert as Lucien/Adrien Wells/Mysterious Man Alison Cimmet as Amandine/Philomene Savvy Crawford as Young Amélie Manoel Felciano as Raphael/Bretodeau Harriett D. Foy as Suzanne Alyse Alan Louis as Georgette/Sylvie/Collignon's Mother Maria-Christina Oliveras as Gina Paul Whitty as Joseph/Fluffy/Collignon's Father ABOUT WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN Based on the Pedro Almodóvar film of the same name, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown tells the tale of a group of women in late 20th-century Madrid whose relationships with men lead to a tumultuous 48 hours of love, confusion, and passion. The musical features music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Jeffrey Lane. Following a series of workshops in 2009 featuring Salma Hayek, Jessica Biel, Matthew Morrison and Paulo Szot, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown opened on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre on November 4, 2010. The production was a limited engagement that was scheduled to end on January 23, 2011, but due to low grosses and ticket sales, closed early on January 2, 2011. At the time of closing, the show had played 30 previews and 69 regular performances. A West End production, also directed by Bartlett Sher and starring Tamsin Greig, Jérôme Pradon, Haydn Gwynne, Anna Skellern, and Willemijn Verkaik opened at the Playhouse Theatre on January 12, 2015 for a 20-week run, and subsequently extended its run, but it was ultimately announced that the production would close on May 23, 2015. Greig and Gwynne were nominated for Best Actress in a Musical and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical respectively at the 2015 Laurence Olivier Awards. Featuring the music of Bob Dylan, with a book and direction by Connor Macpherson, The Girl From the North Country is now playing at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway. In Fall 2018, Laura Heywood sat down with three of the original principals from the Public Theater’s production of the show — the production that has transferred to Broadway this season. Kimber Elayne Sprawl plays Marianne, a nineteen year old black woman raised to adulthood by a white family that owns and runs a boardinghouse, the setting for the musical. Jeanette Bayardelle is a tenant at the boarding house, a widow with a special relationship to the proprieter. And the third voice you’ll hear is Sydney James Harcourt, an actor who departed the production after the Public run — his role, a transient boxer with a complicated past, is no played on Broadway by Austin Scott. LHI will revisit The Girl From the North Country with new content, once the production is officially open on Broadway (it’s currently in previews) — and for now, let this archival conversation whet your appetite for a beautiful new Broadway musical.
Good morning theater fans! This is Caryn Robbins with The Broadway Scoop for Thursday, March 5th. Full casting has been announced for the world premiere of the Britney Spears jukebox musical ONCE UPON A ONE MORE TIME. The production will feature Great News star Briga Heelan as Cinderella, American Idol alum Justin Guarini as Prince Charming, and Tony nominee Emily Skinner as Stepmother. Described as a jukebox spin on a classic fairytale, the show is set to begin preview performances at Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre on April 14, ahead of an official opening on April 30. A Broadway premiere is expected to follow. Tony winners Kristin Chenoweth and Santino Fontana will be among the performers honoring Signature Theatre's 2020 Stephen Sondheim Award recipient, Carol Burnett. The legendary performer is best known for her iconic variety series The Carol Burnett Show, and for her Tony-nominated performance as the original Princess Winnifred in Broadway's ONCE UPON A MATTRESS. Burnett most recently starred on Broadway in the 2014 revival of A.R. Gurney's Love Letters. And a happy opening to the Broadway premiere of Conor McPherson's GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY, officially opening tonight at the Belasco Theatre following a preview period which began on February 7th. Featuring music from the Bob Dylan catalog, the Depression-era set musical stars Tony nominees Marc Kudisch and Mare Winningham, Broadway veteran Tom Nelis, and actor Todd Almond in his Broadway debut. And that's The Broadway Scoop for Thursday, March 5th.
Caitlin Houlahan is one of the stars of Girl from the North Country featuring the music of Bob Dylan, which just began previews with a Broadway opening set for March 5th at the Belasco Theatre. In this episode, Caitlin discusses her background in music therapy at Baldwin Wallace University, her decision to switch gears towards acting, as well as some of her big career moments that mirror the signature performances that New York has witnessed at Yankee Stadium from the likes of All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman, and recently inducted Hall of Famer, Derek Jeter. An Ohio native and lifelong Cleveland Indians fan with a true grasp of baseball and Broadway’s parallels, Caitlin also touches on making her Broadway debut as Dawn in Waitress during the heart of the team’s World Series run in 2016, and how their success helped pumped her up throughout it all. Recently, some alumni from both Caitlin’s Indians (Manny Ramirez) and Al's Yankees (Roger Clemens) were left out of the Baseball Hall of Fame in its latest round of voting due to their connection to performance-enhancing drugs, despite having incredible statistics. In Caitlin’s extremely competitive line of work on stage, there’s a tremendous emphasis on health and strength. She offers some eye-opening perspective on how the industry views steroid use among its performers when a boost is needed to perform eight times a week, versus a baseball player looking to gain an edge illegally. Caitlin also fills us in on what we can expect from Girl from the North Country in which she plays the role of Kate Draper, and how it’ll move an audience much like a great night at the ballpark.
