Once upon a time, Toronto was a sleepy city. The atmosphere shut down at night. Red tape and cultural meekness kept things status quo. But through the 1970s and 1980s, the city's younger generations changed how things work—and one of the biggest players behind the scenes was Gary Topp. A music promoter and independent movie theatre operator, it was Topp—along with his colleague, Gary Cormier, together known as the Two Garys—who first brought and promoted The Ramones, The Police, Slayer and other countercultural icons to Canadians for the first time. Topp also began operating the Roxy Theatre, an art deco building on the Danforth, for punk concerts and movie screenings that wouldn't be shown anywhere else in the country. Last month, Topp's transformative career was printed in a coffee table book, He Hijacked My Brain: Gary Topp's Toronto, recalling legendary stories and performances from decades past. He joins his old friend Ralph Benmergui (who also grew up in Forest Hill, not far away) for a walk down memory lane in exploring his influence on the cultural fabric of the city—and what's changed in the music scene today. If they're breathing... count us in.”We like to think of Valley of Grey as your quintessential pop-rock song,” said Bob Dougherty, co-founder of the bandand co-writer of the band's music. “It's a soaring anthem. It's got riveting solos, infectious hooks but enough heavyguitars to make you tingle in your nether regions.”The band has been together for several years and had released 18 songs on their YouTube channel and all streaming platforms before the pandemic put plans to launch their live show on hold. Along with all the world-wide releases and official lyric videos to all the songs, they released an official music video shot at the famous beachesin Malibu with gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean. Where Are You Tonight, featuring actress Rai Quartley, includes intriguing studio-shot scenes to go along with an enticing story line. Already reaching over half-million views, the video can be seen on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUg56nAAJfs. The song has also been in regular rotation on nine national radio stations. The band's catalog, written by Dougherty and Track, was mostly recorded during a period of several years leading up to 2020 at which time Sensaround was gearing up for live performances. Then the pandemic hit, and the strategy, said Bob, was to “just hole myself up seven days a week and practice mychops on rhythm guitar. We felt it would be as practical as it would be commercially-viable adding the singer-songwriter look to the band. A lead singer without an instrument in his hand seemed outdated to us. We saw achance to turn a negative into a positive. It felt as though the universe hit pause on life, so I resolved to come out of itwith a new skill and we felt that the band would make a better impression with the lead singer handling electricrhythm guitar parts.”Since the pandemic ended, “The priority of the last couple of years has been to get the live show tight,” said Alex Track, co-founder, co-writer and drummer of the band. “It's a blessing to be in a band with such incredible players. It's a gift, not only to be in a band with zero egos, but to have the members be such great friends and great people ingeneral. If this project was any more fun, I wouldn't be able to stand it.”Bob got into music and guitar through a youthful infatuation with U2, REM and Oasis, but didn't become an actual performer until he left a career in video editing and was hired onto the Disney Wonder Cruise ship. After that, he tookthe job of entertainer at the Club Med vacation village in Cancun, which involved physical comedy but also solo acoustic guitar sets at the main bar. “It sharpened my skills and flamed my passion for music,” he said. Club Med is where he met Alex, and that introduction was the genesis of Sensaround. With world-renowned symphony and choral conductor Gerhard Track and Beethoven Piano Competition winnerMicaela Maihart-Track as parents, it was no surprise that Alex Track grew up performing in a number of orchestras, choirs and bands. Taking first place at the Tri-State Music Festival piano competition, Track's passion turned todrums and percussion. Graduating with honors with a Masters of Music Degree from the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, Alex went on to become CEO of Track Entertainment in Los Angeles. Afterattending MIT in Hollywood, Track has been involved in all aspects of the music industry in Los Angeles from scoring pictures to composing, arranging, recording, mixing, mastering and producing records. Track's exceptional skills wererecognized when he won a Grammy Award in 2007. “My grandfather was a very popular entertainer. The Bob Hopeof Europe, if you will and my father was an expert at winning crowds over with intermittent humor during breaksbetween classical pieces at concerts he conducted throughout his career. Taking advantage of Bob's natural sense ofhumor and likability, it's heart-warming for me to see that spirit of entertainment included in our show. For my part, it feels like we're carrying on a family tradition.”Nate Gignac, guitar and vocals, won many competitions at piano festivals in Canada, then, according to his bio, as a teenager “picked up guitar and never looked back.” He studied at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. He has touredwith various rock bands over most of the United States and Mexico.Max Pierce, bass and vocals, has 20 years' experience as a professional bass player, playing in live band situations, doing session work at recording studios, and performing in musical theater. He performs for the Los Angeles theatercompany For The Record, and music that he wrote has been featured on the NBC show Parenthood. The band sums up all that passion, talent, skill and experience in its official bio. Their music, it says, comes “from aplace of earnest, raw sincerity for people who long for the return of real instruments and hand-carved music that is meant to inspire and take the listener through every possible emotion.”As far as the name of the band is concerned, Bob and Alex came up with a plan to write down names that would fit the band. Bob had already written down dozens of names while Alex hadn't come up with one. One day, out of theblue, Alex excitedly told Bob that he had a name for the band. His first and only name for the list, but explained that he saw the name in a dream, up in lights like on a big venue. Alex immediately researched the name. The name “Sensurround” was the patented name for the surround sound system built to shake seats in a movie theater back inthe day. When articles were written on the subject, people inadvertently spelled it “Sensaround.” The slogan was: Sound so powerful that you not only hear it, you feel it. Being that's how Alex felt the listener will feel when hearingtheir music, the name made “sense”. Randomly seeing it in a dream, that vividly, they didn't want to challenge fate. Sensaround was born. The focus now is on live performances. They made their debut in May this year and have two more shows scheduled for September on the L.A. club venue circuit: September 7th at The Universal Bar and Grill on Lankershim Blvd. in Universal City and September 22nd at The Mint on Pico Blvd. in Mid City Los Angeles. They are also working out the details to perform at other famous LA venues, the Whisky A Go Go, The Roxy Theatre, the Troubadour and The Viper Room to start. “We have a strong catalogue,” said Bob. “We've got over 20 songs thatare radio ready. The hope is to build a fan base by playing out consistently. First and foremost, it will be interesting to see the response of a crowd at a live venue. I am excited to find out if they will be throwing their underwear on stageor fire rotten tomatoes at us.”Connect with Sensaround on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.“Valley Of Grey,” Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/track/6j7sQM4pO8iYK92TlS0Jw8?si=81c823897f044c45&nd=1“

There are make-or-break moments in every successful musician's career. Sometimes they're huge, cataclysmic events. Other times, they're subtle nods that point a performer in the right direction. For Billy Joel, a pair of shows in November of 1973 was the latter. And, we have the tapes to prove it. Piano Man had just been released, and Billy was grinding out dates opening for the Beach Boys and the Doobie Brothers. Being an opening act wasn't suiting BIlly, so he took up a local DJ on his offer to play a show at the Roxy Theatre in Northampton Pennsylvania, a few miles north of Allentown. By all known accounts, it would be his first time headlining a theater. And, put into the context of his career up to that point, it's safe to say that this engagement informed his business strategy, as well as some of his song material, afterward. The DJ, Denny Somach, recorded the shows and rediscovered the tapes a few years ago. He made four of the songs available on YouTube, including one that was never released on an album. As intriguing as these early renditions are, the big draw here is Billy's off the cuff comments that reveal much about his career and outlook up to this point. In this episode, we're exploring both the songs and the conversation on the Roxy tapes. We also spoke with Denny Somach and also Rick Wolfe, who worked at the theater during those concerts and is still there today. We also spoke with Denny Somach to learn more about the events leading up to the shows. Join us, as we dig deep into the audio artifacts of Billy Joel's first headlining theater engagement. ------ Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T

Living at the nexus of cosmic country and down-and dirty blues, 7Horse has consistently sought to create new musical forms and sonic pathways. “This is all about riffs and groove,” Leavitt says about the band's quest to tap into rock and roll's rich and varied past. “It's about laying something down that's so good you want to hear it forever.” Calio put it this way: “When 7Horse happened, it was like throwing gasoline on a fire.”Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. The band dropped its recent single, “Hey Vámonos!” on August 19, with the video followed on September 1st. Their NEXT single, “Try to Forget It” will drop on September 30, and the video on October 13. The full album “The Last Resort” will be out October 28th and 7Horse show at the Roxy is on November 4. Blues/rock powerhouse 7Horse, comprised of longtime musical partners Phil Leavitt and Joie Calio, will perform their first live show in over two years at the famed Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood. This ambitious show will kick off the release of their latest album “The Last Resort,” bringing it to life via video representations of the album art and concepts. This show, which will include special guests, will also celebrate the tenth anniversary of 7Horse. Come listen to this love letter to the longevity of Leavitt and Calio's partnership that 7Horse will play in gratitude to their fans. “LA has been the home base for our music for three decades,” Leavitt said. “The Roxy has special significance as it's where things really got started for us. We're thrilled to be playing our album release show at this legendary venue that's like home to us.”The band will drop its next single, “Hey Vámonos!” on August 19, with the video to follow on September 1st. They'll follow that with the single, “Try to Forget It” on September 30, the video on October 13. The full album “The Last Resort” arrives on show day, November 4. 7Horse has such a unique sound—described by a fan as “Post-punk dystopian blues”—because Leavitt and Calio have been playing together for 30 years, first as original members of the alt/rock trio Dada. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Dada's debut album, “Puzzle” (1992 IRS Records) which spawned the hit single and MTV video “Dizz Knee Land.” 7Horse further cemented its reputation when Martin Scorsese featured their song “Meth Lab Zoso Sticker” in The Wolf of Wall Street. Over the years, Leavitt and Calio have rubbed shoulders with numerous musical legends. Amongst their many collaborations, they have toured with Sting, recorded with Ringo Starr, and worked with other musical household names on the production side. About 7Horse:Despite 7Horse's uncanny ability to synthesize influences as diverse as 60s – 70s monsters The Rolling Stones and The Doors, seminal bluesmen Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Johnny Winter, and proto-art rockers Lou Reed and David Bowie, the band keeps one foot firmly rooted in the Blues. Living at the nexus of cosmic country and down-and dirty blues, 7Horse has consistently sought to create new musical forms and sonic pathways. “This is all about riffs and groove,” Leavitt says about the band's quest to tap into rock and roll's rich and varied past. “It's about laying something down that's so good you want to hear it forever.” Calio put it this way: “When 7Horse happened, it was like throwing gasoline on a fire.”Pipeman in the Pit is a music and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show (#pipemanradio) and from The King of All Festivals while on The Pipeman Radio Tour. *Content Warning: This episode of Doin' Time contains audio images and discussion of Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander people who have died Each year, hundreds of people around the country gather on the Sunday of the June long weekend to commemorate the unprovoked massacre of at least 28 Wirrayaraay women, children and older men by a group of stockmen on Myall Creek Station on June 10, 1838. The Myall Creek Memorial was constructed near Bingara on 10 June 2000 by a group of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people working together in an act of reconciliation. In 2008 the massacre site and memorial were included on the national heritage register, and also received NSW state heritage listing in 2010. This week, Marisa presents part two of a yearly commemoration of the Myall Creek Massacre, interviewing Keith Munro, Aboriginal co-chair of the Friends of Myall Creek Memorial National Committee, and grandson of Uncle Lyall Munro Snr, to continue last week's discussion with co-chair Cecilia Blackwell and talk about their special upcoming annual memorial event. Keith gives listeners a comprehensive picture of the events and legal proceedings surrounding the massacre, including jurors openly admitting bias, and remembers the work of lawyer George Plunkett, without whom 7 of the 11 initially acquitted perpetrators would not have been re-trialed and convicted. He notes that despite continued colonial violence with widespread horrific massacres before and after the event, it shines through as a time in history where good people did fight for justice, and discusses the legacy of the Myall Creek memorial services in bringing together decendants of both perpetrators and survivors of the massacre, allowing everyone to remember history truthfully in a step to heal intergenerational trauma and educate the wider community. Alongside the memorial event this year, there will also be a community concert Myall Creek Rocks the Roxy taking place 3-5pm Saturday June 11 at the Roxy Theatre in Bingara. Memorial special guest speaker, local historian and author James Wilson-Miller, is also delivering a special program Yarning About Truth-Telling on Friday June 10 at the University of New England in Armidale. The memorial event will take place on Sunday 12th June 2022, at the memorial site located roughly mid-way between Bingara and Delungra - for more information, or to become a member of Friends of Myall Creek, you can go to their website www.myallcreek.org Later in the Show, Marisa interviews Ellen Maybery, Senior Lawyer at Environmental Justice Australia, about a controversial amendment they are urging the Andrews government to withdraw from parliament as it will see draconian law that criminalises peaceful protest. The Sustainable Forest Timber Amendment (Timber Harvesting Safety Zones Bill) 2022 was introduced by the Victorian Government last week, and would see protesters who are attempting to prevent native forest logging in Victoria face fines of up to $21,000 or 12 months in jail. Ellen comes on the show to discuss that in the face of recent catastrophic bushfires and devastating climate end ecosystem collapse, the protest of illegal logging should be protected. Instead, VicForests is facing 9 court cases brought by the community - where instead of regulating the logging indistry and cracking down on illegal logging, the Victorian Government is trying to introduce amendments to current laws to create tougher penalties for protesters, citing health and safety concerns.

Tony Palmucci se unió a Baton Rouge en 1991 y lanzó el álbum Lights Out on The Playground.

Neil Young grabó su Roxy: Tonight’s is the Night en 1973. The Crusaders grabaron Scratch on the Roxy en 1974. Ese mismo año Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention realizaban su Roxy and Elsewhere.
Hey babies! We breath the fresh air this week and trade Middle Earth for Punxsutawney as the Mystery Guest joins again to talk about the time she and Hooks watched Groundhog Day for 14 straight hours at the beloved Roxy Theatre in Missoula. We also talk about the constant existential dread of life and Crow's experience catching and eating radioactive crawfish. Oh and halfway though we realize it's the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the show and we reminisce about what a crazy year it's bean and Hooks gets a serious case of missing the homies.

The first Roxy Music album brings together a patchwork of inspirations and influences from across the decades. In the second episode of Ghost Echoes, we stroll spontaneously into the movie theatre of the mind and examine a few of them. Here's looking at you, kid. Music and Sound Notes: - All of the Roxy Music tracks heard here for illustrative purposes are from their debut album. They include: “Re-Make/Re-Model”, “Virginia Plain”, “Bitters End”, “Chance Meeting", and “2HB”. - The recording of Rachmaninov's second piano concerto near the start is by an anonymous soloist and symphony orchestra, from Musopen. The excerpt from Brief Encounter itself features a recording of the same concerto by Eileen Joyce with the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Muir Matheson. The Noël Coward song heard shortly after is “The Party's Over Now,” from the musical Words and Music. - The segment on pop art features excerpts from Buddy Holly's “Everyday” and David Bowie's “Andy Warhol.” The section about musicians who went to art school features tiny extracts from “All Your Love” by John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers; “Imagine” by John Lennon; “Brown Sugar”, “Some Girls”, and “Honky Tonk Women” all by the Rolling Stones; “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin; “Pinball Wizard” by the Who; “Tubular Bells, Part 1” by Mike Oldfield; “Bike” by Pink Floyd; “Layla” by Derek and the Dominos; “The Village Green Preservation Society” by the Kinks; “Seaside Rendezvous” by Queen; “Your Love is King” by Sade; “Common People” by Pulp; “You're So Great” by Blur; “Man-Size” by PJ Harvey; “Paper Planes” by M.I.A.; “Kiss With A Fist” by Florence and the Machine; and “London Calling” by the Clash. - The recording of Wagner's “Ride of the Valkyries” used here is by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Uwe Mund. The brief excerpt from the start of Das Rheingold is the Staatskapelle Dresden conducted by Marek Janowski, and the horn call from Götterdämmerung is the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Chailly. - The music that finishes the episode off is from the end of Max Steiner's score for Casablanca. Further reading, watching: - The two main sources for biographical information were Michael Bracewell's Re-Make/Re-Model and Simon Reynolds' Shock and Awe. The Brief Encounter section is loosely inspired by Roland Barthes' essay “Leaving the Movie Theatre” from The Rustle of Language. The list of art school alumni who went on to pop stardom comes from Pretentiousness: Why it Matters by Dan Fox. - The BBC documentary at the beginning of the pop art section is “Pop Goes the Easel,” an episode of Monitor, hosted by Huw Wheldon and directed by the great Ken Russell. The interview clips with Ferry are taken from a Channel Four documentary called This is Tomorrow. - The images in this blog post were the main source for my descriptions of the Roxy Theatre. - Other film and television clips come from Brief Encounter; What's Opera, Doc?; The Wizard of Oz; Casablanca and Now, Voyager.

VATTICA is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in early 2014, the band quickly built an impressive local following in Southern California, including on the infamous Sunset Strip, performing at legendary venues such as The Viper Room, The Roxy Theatre and The Troubadour. VATTICA’s bombastic and energetic live show caught the attention of Another Century/Century Media Records, who promptly offered the band a recording contract. VATTICA then set about refining their sound, which quickly coalesced into an arena-ready style reminiscent of alternative chart-toppers such as Muse, OneRepublic, PVRIS, Our Lady Peace, STARSET and Imagine Dragons. Next, VATTICA entered the studio to begin recording their debut album at The Mix Room in Burbank, CA with veteran producer Ben Grosse (Breaking Benjamin, Daughtry, Filter, RED, Vertical Horizon, Third Eye Blind, STARSET). In 2017 VATTICA finished their debut album, entitled “WE SURVIVE”. At the same time, Another Century was absorbed by RED Music which ultimately resulted in VATTICA deciding to part ways with the label. VATTICA then joined forces with new management and released their first single, “REMEMBER TO BREATHE”, on their own label (Villis) in May 2018. REMEMBER TO BREATHE premiered on ALT105.3 (KITS) (and has been added to rotation on the station’s local music show SOUNDCHECK), as well as the iTunes “Alternative Music” page. It has also made it into Spotify’s “Discover Weekly” algorithm, amassing over 40k+ plays to date. The lyric video for REMEMBER TO BREATHE received over 10k+ views on its first day. VATTICA is currently working on a music video for their next single, CRIMINAL, to be released August 2018, with distribution through The Orchard.
We catch up with Nic Adler, the festival director behind two of Los Angeles’ top eating-and-drinking experiences: Eat Drink Vegan and Arroyo Seco Weekend. Eat Drink Vegan--originally called the Vegan Beer and Food Festival--was started by Nic, a vegan himself, in 2009. That first year was a gathering of 400 people in the parking lot of his very own The Roxy Theatre. This year’s crowd of 10,000+ surrounded the Rose Bowl, and there were more than 450 vendors in attendance. Now in its second year, Arroyo Seco Weekend combines great food--Burritos La Palma, Hatchet Hall and Freedman’s are among the restaurants participating--with great rock music. The 2018 headliners are Neil Young, Kings of Leon, Jack White and Robert Plant. We hit up our vault and revisit a musical guest from 2014: Psychic Twin. Erin Fein began writing and recording as Psychic Twin, and while recording by herself, doubling her vocals and singing melodies, she began to feel that she was in a way working with her twin. Psychic Twin gave us a live performance from their EP, Two Visions. Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.

Born on Valentine’s Day, this Arizona-born songstress, songwriter & producer had sounds of soul music flowing through her veins at an early age. While voice training in those days started at her grandmother’s church, her professional singing career began as a child when she was chosen to sing background vocals for the legendary Jeffrey Osborne, and for the Rock Band Yes. The former beauty pageant winner decided long ago that music was her true passion and has set her sights on her dream ever since. While studying classical voice at Howard University, Tobin gained stage experiences performing with the school’s Chorale in which during President Clinton’s Inaugural Gala on the National Mall, performing background for Diana Ross, Whitley Phipps, and shared the stage with Patti LaBelle, Luther Vandross, Shai and many others. Having performed demos and background vocals for artists such as Joe, Chico DeBarge, Coolio, Chante Moore, Korea-based Uptown, Coco Lee and Mica Paris has prepared her for her moment to shine as a solo artist. Although most of her influences are male singers like Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Prince, and Donny Hathaway, Tobin is reminiscent of the sultry sounds and richness of R&B or Jazz singers of yesterday. Teri Tobin independently released her critically acclaimed debut LP, LOVE INFINITY, spring 2011. Since then, she has released her first Christmas EP, CHRISTMAS CHILD. Tobin's music can be heard on radio stations worldwide as well as countless podcasts, DirecTV, and on select airlines In-Flight. Her international hit-single "Free" remained at the #1-spot for continuous weeks on various charts in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands. Tobin, SoulTracks 2011 Readers' Choice Awards and Independent Music Awards Nominee, is currently touring select cities in the U.S. with her "Love&Sōl LIVE" concert series which kicked-off at the legendary Roxy Theatre in December. On Valentine's Day 2012, she released the title track and first single "So Good to Me" feat. Morris Alan from her forthcoming sophomore full-length album entitled, SO GOOD TO ME scheduled for release June 2012. Tobin punctuates each line with heart and soul, speaking to every generation with each melodic phrase.
