The very best advice I've ever had as a freelancer is a very simple one:Underpromise, and overdeliver. An editor of mine gave me this advice a few years into freelancing, and it really stuck with me. Not least because I see a lot of freelancers get into pickles because they've done the opposite - overpromise and underdeliver. The trouble is that if you overpromise, you're on a road to burnout, and you've left yourself with no wiggle room to wow your client. But if you under promise and over deliver (especially with deadlines!) you're giving yourself room to go above and beyond their expectations. In this week's podcast, I dive into this topic a little more! Follow me on Instagram Email: hello@emmacossey.com Come join us in the free Freelance Lifestylers Facebook group Want more support? Sales Strategies for Service-Based Businesses This episode of She Talks Business is anything but ordinary. With Mackenzie St. Laurent, you'll learn about sales strategies, mindsets, and invaluable tips that are highly insightful. Forget stale pitches and forced smiles—you'll learn what it truly means to excel in sales and service-based businesses. Agility in Sales Agility became our watchword. There's power in adaptability, meeting your clients where they are, and tailoring your approach to their specific needs. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all plans. “Underpromise and overdeliver” should be your core mantra. Give your clients realistic expectations so that you can leave them speechless with your results. Building Trust Through Understanding Time spent understanding your client's needs is always well-spent; it's the foundation for building trust and lasting relationships. Think of it as a pre-pitch prep session, laying the groundwork for a mutually beneficial collaboration. Speaking of pitches, ditch the pressure of closing deals and embrace "selling as a service." You will then go from a salesperson into a trusted advisor who goes above and beyond to solve problems and exceed expectations. It's a mindset shift that fosters genuine connections and will make your customers happy. Rejection is a Stepping Stone Rejection? It's inevitable but not debilitating. Detach yourself from the outcomes and embrace the learning opportunities within each "no." Every interaction, positive or negative, hones your skills and shapes your approach, propelling you forward. Your Sales Process This means that you'll need structure. Outline your sales process, creating clear steps that flex with each of your clients. It's about understanding their needs at every turn, ensuring that every interaction moves them closer to their desired outcome. Asking for the Sale Ultimately, you'll have to ask for the sale. You've built trust and established expertise to pave the way for confidently closing deals. It's not about pressure but creating a win-win scenario where everyone walks away feeling empowered and satisfied. This episode isn't just about sales; it's about business, relationships, and the power of understanding and exceeding expectations. So, tune in, share your thoughts, and start making those sales! What's In This Episode - The importance of adaptability and overdelivering - Handling rejection and building rapport - Increasing sales conversion rates - Structuring service offerings for sales What To Do Next Visit lisalarter.com/e139 for all resources from this episode.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Underpromise, overdeliver, published by eirine on December 12, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is from my blog Said Twice, where I write advice that I've said twice. I was unsure whether to linkpost here but decided to do so given that it's largely based on my experiences from running EA Norway from 2018-2021! As much as you can, try to underpromise when making commitments and then do your best to pleasantly surprise. Here are the two main takeaways I want you to get from this post: You have a certain amount of credits with your stakeholders, that can be spent or earned depending on whether you break or meet expectations. As a general rule, when it comes to managing expectations with stakeholders it's better to underpromise and overdeliver. When thinking about stakeholder management, I've found it useful to imagine my relationships with my stakeholders as consisting of some number of 'credits' that can be earned and spent. You earn credits by delivering on time, being helpful, and signalling certain virtues (like seeming professional, transparent, and kind). You spend credits when you break a promise, don't deliver on time, seem uncharitable, show up late, and so on. In this context, by stakeholder I mean someone (individual, group of people, organisation, or community) that is affected by or can affect your organisation. The type of stakeholders I'm most used to are users of a product, community members, funders or donors, collaborators, and contractors or companies that provide a service. The value of these credits isn't always obvious. Some are pretty easy to see, like whether a funder approves your application, whether an organisation chooses to partner with you, and whether someone chooses to work with you. However, sometimes the value of having a good relationship (or a positive balance) with a stakeholder is less clear and might only become apparent later on. Whose credits matter the most Some stakeholders are more important than others, and therefore more important to make sure you keep a positive credit balance with. To know which is which, there are multiple tools you can use to map out your stakeholders. A common tool is Mendelow's matrix, also called the power-interest matrix. In this matrix, your stakeholders can be mapped across two axes: How much power they have over your organisation, and how much interest they have in your work. The idea is roughly that the more interest the stakeholders have in your work, the more time you should spend on keeping them informed. The more power they have over your organisation, the more you should ensure they're satisfied with your work. The stakeholders that are both highly interested and have a lot of power are the most important ones, and whose credits matter the most. It's important to be aware of who your stakeholders are and how important they actually are to your organisation. If you don't, you can end up spending too much time closely managing or getting input from stakeholders who you should actually just monitor and keep track of. Welcome back to Season 2 of The ReWork Podcast! We're kicking off the 2023 season with a ReWork favorite guest, Kathryn Langsford of Photos by Kathryn, and we're talking all about how to navigate the slow seasons in our business. Following the hectic holiday season, January and February feel much slower. In the beginning of January, this feels great, but by the time we hit late January or early February, we might find ourselves in a mental tailspin. You know what I mean, the thought that we will never work again. That we might actually have to get a REAL job! (Shudder). It may or may not help to know that these thoughts are totally normal. But that doesn't mean they are very helpful thoughts. So in our discussion today, Kathryn and I share our experiences and what we've learned to do now during our slower seasons to work on cleaning up, getting prepared for busier times ahead, and to really hone in on our own rest and mental health. In this episode, you'll learn how to: Manage the negative thoughts and fears that pop up during the slow season. Use the less busy time to clean up and polish your systems. Avoid making business decisions you'll regret because you panicked. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:42] - For Kathryn, no matter how many years she has been in business, this time of year never gets any easier to deal with. [04:57] - Running a business in an uncertain world is hard, but when is it ever a certain world? There's always something to navigate. [06:27] - Quantify the negative thoughts when you are scared. When we tell ourselves doom and gloom stories, we make stupid decisions. [08:34] - It's not about the “how-to”. You have to have a strong “want-to”. [10:18] - Kathryn admits that she is constantly coming from a place of survival as the sole breadwinner in her home. [11:50] - Even with a savings for the first time with her business, Kathryn still gets fearful and negative thoughts during slow seasons. [12:56] - Someone else might be the person that needs to tell you that you are amazing and that things will be okay, but often, we can't do that for ourselves. [14:34] - While Kathryn shares that she worries when making large purchases, Allison shares that she feels guilty. [15:49] - Slow seasons don't mean that you're doing things wrong. [17:20] - When we say that business is slow, what are we comparing that to? [18:09] - The best person to compare yourself to is yourself this time last year. [19:59] - It's hard to always get out of the workhorse mentality. Working that way will lead to burnout. [21:50] - Kathryn lists the things that you will be better at when you are less busy, regardless of the glorification of being too busy. [23:44] - When she's less busy, Kathryn takes the time to clean things up that get messy when it's busy. [26:17] - This time of year is usually not the best time to drive new clients. [27:30] - Allison shares a tip of filming the space because you likely don't even notice as you walk by them everyday. [31:27] - This time of year, it is a good idea to look through your calendar from last year and reflect on how it went and what you'd like to plan for. [33:32] - Kathryn describes how she blocks out her calendar and strategies she uses to ensure things aren't overlooked. [36:00] - Kathryn changed her routine to keep a three day shoot schedule and shares her mental shift to make this happen. [40:28] - Underpromise and overdeliver. [42:42] - Allison reflects on 2021 and the lessons she learned about scheduling clients early. [44:37] - Clients appreciate when you give realistic time frames for completion rather than overpromising to make them happy in the moment. [47:01] - Use the slow season to work on your own mental health and rest to build yourself back up after the busy holiday season. Meet Captain Lou EdwardsIt is impossible to look at or speak to Captain Lou without smiling. He is a whirlwind of stories, non sequiturs, rhyming catchlines, and constant movement. He is full of humor, fun, and optimism. I have never left his presence without feeling happier, or at least a little more cheerful. The thing about Lou is that he's fun, amazingly confident and uninhibited and – despite his firm claim that he is too stupid to fail – his easygoing exuberance belies his street and business savvy, and a survival instinct that drives him harder and further than most. Chelsea is a voice-over actress, TV host, and producer who has worked with legends such as Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Chadwick Boseman, Cee Lo Green, Dionne Warwick, and many more! We talked about her lessons as on-screen talent, producing a documentary that changed her life, and her evolution as a mom, storyteller, and change agent in the industry. When we start out as freelancers, it can be incredibly easy to underestimate the value of our work. Most of us would probably admit to intentionally underselling ourselves because we're lacking confidence or in order to placate clients. Only as we begin to establish ourselves in our chosen field do most of us gain the perspective and conviction to charge what we're really worth.Welcome to episode six of the Freelance Founders podcast. We're talking to Savannah White, a stylist, creative consultant, and costume designer.Today, we're discussing with Savannah how she made the shift from Arkansas to New York, our mutual early experience with PR firms, and how she differentiated herself at the start of her career from others in her industry. We also chat about how she keeps her inspiration flowing and fresh, and the importance of staying flexible when it comes to building your business. Some Questions asked:Do you feel like being part of the free internship era made it harder for you to know your worth when you first started out? (02:48)You're from Arkansas, you came to the Big Apple. How did you get into all of this? And how did you decide, “I want to go do the styling route”? Underpromise and overdeliver is one of my favorite maxims. Unfortunately, the marketing teams for the vast majority of blogging tools out there don't seem to agree. So, how do you find which tools actually deliver on their promises without breaking the bank? Pinterest strategist and founder of the website Arts and Budgets, Latasha Peterson, joined me on the Summer of Live 2021 and shared 15 of her favorite free or cheap tools that she's used to grow her traffic and create nine flourishing income streams. I knew we had to turn this Facebook Live into a podcast episode ASAP, so here we are! I'm Jenny Guy, your host of Mediavine On Air, wishing all our listeners a big welcome. If you want to follow along with Latasha's awesome presentation while you listen, we've got it linked below. Now let's get going with the wonderful Latasha! Transcript [MUSIC PLAYING] JENNY GUY: Hidey ho, audience. It's Wednesday, June 16, and I'm so happy to welcome you to the third week in Mediavine's fourth annual Summer of Live. I'm Jenny Guy, your host throughout each and every season. What the heck is a Summer of Live, you ask? I thought I heard you ask that. It's this crazy thing that we do at Mediavine every summer, where we go live on Facebook every week for three weeks-- three months. Three months. Bringing you experts from every corner of the content creation industry. So, reminder that if you cannot capture the episode live, if you're watching on a replay, the replays are always available for free on Mediavine's Facebook page. And then once we edit them, we put them up on our YouTube channel. And finally, they could end up as a podcast episode for our new podcast Mediavine On Air. We'll also be sharing our guest presentations in the comments at the end of every episode, because our goal is to make it as easy and painless as possible for you to consume the content and learn. That is our goal. Hello, everybody. Thank you for tuning in. I always love to watch our animation that Senior Graphic Designer, Susanna, made. It just makes me so happy. So, so far this summer we have talked about Pinterest with Amy Locurto and affiliate marketing with Jessica Turner. And this week, we're talking tools. Tool time, for any of my other geriatric millennials. Remember Home Improvement ? Specifically, tools that help your business without costing a fortune. We're all about growth in June. So, let us start out with a question for the audience. Say, hello. Some of you already have. And tell us, what app do you believe has helped you out the most in growing your business? Post it in the comments. And while those answers are rolling in, please allow me to introduce my guest, who is joining me for the first time on Mediavine live, but is no stranger to us and our audience. She's here to give us the lowdown on the apps that you need to grow your business on a budget. Latasha, welcome to the Summer of Live. LATASHA PETERSON: Hi, Jenny. I'm so happy to be here. If you want to keep your promise you should Underpromise and Overdeliver. The First Law of Customer Service is Satisfaction = Perceptions – Expectations. The Second Law of Customer Service is it's hard to catch up once you are behind! When you over promise and underdeliver you are raising your patient's expectations which is setting up a trap that you could eventually step in. If you under promise to lower their expectations and then over deliver with a fantastic experience you will satisfy your patients by successfully managing their expectations. You should always keep your promise but if in doubt, under promise and over deliver. When a patient breaks their front tooth off and asks you if you can match it, why would you say absolutely! I tell them God made the tooth next to it and you want me to match it?!? I will try my very best, but no one can perfectly match your natural human tooth. Their expectations have been lowered and then they are delighted when they see the final result because I exceeded their lowered expectations. The same with post-operative pain; will I feel any pain afterwards and can I go back to work? I say, “When the anesthetic wares off you're probably going to want to jump off a cliff.” When they come back in, they are all happy saying, “I was fine afterwards. That didn't hurt at all.” Then I tell them they're probably married with children and they're used to pain and suffering, they chuckle and we're all good. At the Fortune 500 level they almost never pick an extrovert salesperson for CEO because that person has spent their entire career over promising and underdelivering and that never works from the top. They always want an introvert because they listen, think, and then methodically set out with a doable plan.
Principle of Success 4: Going the Extra Mile Going the extra mile is rendering more and better service than you are paid for, with a positive mental attitude. *It's my pleasure attitude. *Underpromise and over deliver. *Provide overwhelming value. Principle of Success 5: Embodying A Pleasing Personality Our personality is the sum total of our mental, spiritual and physical traits and habits. An attractive personality is assembled by controlling and guiding our emotions, practicing courtesy and having a positive attitude. *How are you honing your mental, spiritual and physical traits and habits? Are you actively working on your SELF or are you busy criticizing and judging other people and situations? *Increase your exposure to people, places and things you'd like to integrate into your own personality. Principle of Success 6: Taking Personal Initiative Personal initiative is the inner power that inspires all action to get started and completed. Procrastination prevents all success and achievement. *'I'm a do-er, I do things now, I get things done' mantra. *Are you stuck getting ready to get started to someday possibly take action? *If it's meant to be, it's up to me. OWN your goals. Take steps daily through your pro-active actions to move the needle for yourself and your family. *If you're not yet enjoying the profit you desire, you have yet to learn how to help enough people at a high enough level! In order to achieve long term, ever increasing success, you MUST learn to do what you don't want to do when you don't want to do it at the highest level! We all dream of creating a group program where the members take action, are constantly inspired, and become transformed together. But ho0owwww Tash, is what you are really wondering. How do I get there and create this ✨magical✨ space and get them these crazy wins!? My Tips: 1. Underpromise and Overdeliver Go above and beyond when they aren't expecting you to like giving random bonuses and expand on questions from individual members for the rest of the group. This makes your members feel heard and cared for and like woww, she's surprising me left and right! 2. Set The Tone Set the tone for how they will engage in the group, how clients will interact with you, and how fun and supportive it will be for them. You are the one in control, if you want fun, light-hearted engagement you have to facilitate that and not expect the members to create that space for you. 3. Attraction Marketing Who you attract but become attractive to the other members. They have to vibeee or else the community just won't be there. Be intentional about who you want in the group, don't just pick anybody, we don't want to lead with desperado energy here. 4. Have Good Energy It's contagious. Your members will look up to you as the expert and for guidance. As the facilitator they will follow your energetic flow so it needs to be at a level you want them to carry forth. It will overall be a reflection of how motivational you are.
I read an article today that was condemning the popular concept of underpromising and overdelivering. It was saying that doing the overdelivery part was a waste of time and unappreiciated by everyone, including clients. Is this true?Maybe it depends on the situation, just like everything does, but I don't find it to be true in the wedding industry in general, or in my business. But then again I always want to stay in a positive mindset so none of this would really occur to me anyway.Try asking a few personal questions on their initial booking questionnaire.Like “what's your fave movie candy?” and having it for them at the wedding. Don't tell them that's why you're asking, just make it look like it's for fun and suprise them with it.It would be irrelevant to promise it, but it goes a long way when actually doing it.Why else would you not want to promise it? If something comes up and you can't deliver on those extras. No one wants an overdelivery to become a disappointment! It's a lot of fun to do, and you'll be so surprised how far it goes with getting referrals from those who you surprise and delight for. Another vendor might even see you do it too and also be impressed, as if they weren't already. It's the icing on the cake!Same thing with client gifts and gifts for other vendors who you want to nurture a relationship.Unexpected gifts are always the best!I personally love sending handwritten notes to the members of my VIP group, and to other people within the industry and my personal life who I come in contact with, and I teach my students to do the same thing.Every once in a while I also send them a surprise gift.Do I want to tell them mail is coming for them? Usually no, I love to surprise and delight, to underpromise and over deliver.Hot tip is a challenge: Think of a way you can surprise and delight, or underpromise and overdeliver to your clients. There's something magic that happens when you surprise and delight, it brightens your day as much or even more than the person on the receiving end.Give it a try and let me know how it goes!Other important mentions:Join us in our free group for wedding pros on Facebook in "The Wedding Vendors Community" to further the discussionConnect with me on InstagramEmail me, I love hearing from you!Share this podcast with a wedding pro friend or two!Join us in our exclusive insiders group, The Vendors CircleJust for you, here's a code for a $5 trial for the first month in our exclusive VIP membership for wedding professionals. Ever bit off more than you can chew? I do it all the time. But despite the best of my intentions, sometimes things just come up and you just can't fulfil all the obligations that you've wound yourself up in. It's a mistake born of good intentions. Sure I'll get that mix done for you by the end of the week. No problem, we can sell out this venue for sure! It's an easy trap to fall into, and one that we make all by ourselves! Enter: the brilliantly simple principle of underpromising and overdelivering - where you simply do as it states: Underpromise (aka give yourself more leniency and time), and overdeliver (get the task done sooner than you said you would). At first glance, it's easy to dismiss this idea; after all, underpromising seems like a lacklustre way to perform professionally and surely people wouldn't respond to that very well - but in fact, it's genius - because it's all about how we frame things. The principle of underpromising and overdelivering is actually about NOT overpromising and then underdelivering. Peoples trust, and expectations in you, are based solely on how you act and treat them. Missing a deadline might not be malicious, but you did miss the deadline, and they are going to begin to not depend on your word. Now, say you told them a different deadline, one that was two days later than the date that you actually thought you'd have it done by. Two possible scenarios now present themselves: things go accordingly and you finish, as you had expected, two days earlier than what you told the other person. They are now thrilled - you over delivered. Scenario #2 - Something comes up and it ends up taking you a little longer, but because of the two day buffer you installed by telling them a slightly delayed date, you now still finished on schedule - it's not an over deliver, but it was consistent with your word and they will be happy. It comes down to your word, and by being slightly clever and utilizing the underpromise and overdeliver principle, your word will be considerably more consistent and trustworthy - which should be of the outmost value to you, no matter what field you are working in. Plus, as a bonus - you'll be way less stressed out by your deadlines ;) Jump on in and listen to the episode and we hope you enjoy it!---If you'd like to support Your Band Sucks (At Business) and our podcast please become a Patreon supporter here: https://www.patreon.com/yourbandsucksatbusiness---Stuff We Use / Affiliate Links: Distrokid (our recommended music distribution service)Close.IO (Malcoms recommended CRM)Transistor.FM (A great podcast hosting platform)BackBlaze File Backup Services (Malcoms recommend data backup service)Printful - Print-To-Order Merchandise ServiceCanva (what we use for graphic design)Quickbooks Accounting Software (What we use to run our books and process credit card payments)SquareSpace WebsitesSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/yourbandsucksatbusiness)

Innovation is only true innovation when it is put on the market and validated with customers. With our esteemed guest, Joe Pine, the author of (among many others) “The Experience Economy”, we investigate the innovation space for experience design. We dig into the value of long-term thinking and the importance of considering the employee experience next to staging the experiences for customers. We tap into a concept of regenerative management and into the importance of underpromising to create powerful word-of-mouth.Please note that this episode was recorded before the outbreak of the coronavirus — some of the comments refer to the situation before the pandemic. Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle shares how giving free advice doesn't help your firm - it actually hurts you! What is the definition of TRUST, and why is it so important for your firm? Tip #1 - give a “sample” of the work, not the whole “meal.” When you provide your prospects with the full meal that is like giving away all of your knowledge for free. Don't tell your potential client HOW you will do the work - tell them WHAT the end result will be! The how to a client is actually irrelevant until you are paid. If you tell them how they can go find someone else to do the work for a cheaper cost. Be strategic about how you communicate - sometimes your genius can hurt you. Tip #2 - show the human side of the business. We get caught up in the details and the numbers, but our clients also want to know about US! Don't be afraid to show your personality. Clients truly do want to connect with you on a non work level. Give clients the chance to connect with the human side of the business - how your firm is changing clients lives, and your own life! Make an “about me” page on your website, and make sure that you have a good picture of yourself. Tip #3 - make yourself available for inquiries. Be ready and able to field inquiries. Be reachable even if it's through an assistant. Consider installing a live chat function on your website so that potential clients can reach out to you. Create unique touch points with clients to set yourself apart from the competition. Tip #4 - be clear about what your client should expect. Rule of thumb: Underpromise and over-deliver! Make sure that your client knows expectations regarding accessibility, potential charges, or anything else related to the engagement that they engaged with you in. Create boundaries, clearly, define them with your client, and stick to them. Tip #5 - make sure that you follow through! If you say you'll do something, DO IT! Operate in integrity in all aspects of your firm. People pay premium prices for your services when they trust you! BONUS tip: Create a Yelp business account so that you can have testimonials and reviews from current clients. Yelp will help bring you business! Check out Episode 14 of The Abundant Accountant Podcast to hear how Yelp helped build Aleksey Kaplans business. 35: Why We Believe You Should Always Underpromise And Overdeliver by Mondays with Mike & Mary
Was hast du zu verlieren? Mit Talent und Spaß daran kann es sogar funktionieren. Wenns nicht klappt hast du was gelernt. Such deren Rat. There is an old saying that we should underpromise and overdeliver. This may seem obvious to us, but it is worth considering in our career and business. In fact, this approach is one of the best recipes for success in both your individual career and that of your company or employer. Underpromise and Overdeliver to Separate from Competition There are many ways to appeal to customers, but this concept is not often put forward. The underlying message follows these lines, but it is rarely stated. Instead, we often see marketing focus on quality, features, and other things that are easy to market. Value does touch on this concept, but it does not rise to the same level in my mind. However, part of the problem is how to market this idea. A good example of this idea is to promise that a customer always gets more than they expect. How many companies promise to always exceed expectations? This promise sets the bar too high for most of us. Instead, business runs on setting expectations and meeting them. A Practical Approach We talk about how we want to underpromise and overdeliver, but how do we do this consistently? In my mind, the easiest path is to always move the finish line once it has been defined. You will not achieve this objective unless you set it and hold yourself to it. For example, once you have a set of deliverables and a time frame that you discuss with the customer you go back and make adjustments. This includes changing target/delivery dates for yourself, adding on features, and other ways that can add value to the customer. This may appear to be a simplification, but give it a shot. When you set more aggressive goals you will be amazed at how much better you get at achieving them. Links and Resources Jab, Jab, Jab, Right-hook (Extended Summary)

I don’t remember getting to a point where I felt like I had caught up and could safely do nothing. Even if I get caught up on the immediate needs like housework or work goals, there are always self-improvement or home-improvement projects, things I’ve been wanting to do with my family, career related study, etc. Every day it feels like I wake up behind in the race. That’s not to say I’m always doing something productive. But at the times I’m doing nothing productive, I’m choosing to do nothing over doing something, whether it’s because I’m exhausted or unmotivated or whatever. But I always have to actively decide to be unproductive over all the things I “should” be doing, and that usually comes with guilt. This is not healthy. Anybody have any books or talks or tips on how to change this mindset?” Of course, immediately he started getting responses. These were not solutions, however, but affirmations that this was not just him, but so many of us that feel the same way. It’s the allowing that is the flow of the river…and that’s how you get cruising. “I would love to flow like the river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.” John O’Donahue We have multiple areas of our lives that have to be assessed: • Work/Finance • Family • Emotional/Spiritual • Personal Development • Physical • Social • Life Tasks Those “life tasks” at the end are all of the housekeeping to-dos, repairs, errands, day-to-day life requirements that eat up a ton of time and energy. Everyone dreams of a personal assistant because this one area alone could easily eat up your whole day, every day. So how do we keep from just having that feeling of overwhelm all the time? Six Tips to Eliminate Overwhelm Here are the biggies for me, to ensure you don’t feel behind all the time. 1: Prioritize Recommended Read: The One Thing by Gary Keller (http://amzn.to/2xrsRSt) Stop multi-tasking and do one thing with excellence. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with that incredible focus Create Your Priorities – look at what REALLY has to be done. Sometimes, we create a to-do list of so many things, and then we realize that it may not all be necessary. I’ve stressed out looking at a full day of errands, and the more I break it down, realize that there was only ONE of the many things on my to-do list that really needed to be done that day. Breaking it down into bite-size pieces and asking myself, “is it necessary at this moment?” Really helped. 2: Obliterate Obligation Okay, there is a time and place for obligation. Sometimes going out of your way for someone you love is worth it to see the happiness on their face, even if it’s not your favorite thing. Some obligation is okay. But when obligation takes over, you can twist down into a spiral of people-pleasing that is a bottomless pit. If you start to notice that everything you do all day is based on making someone else happy, it’s time to seriously check yourself. You are not in charge of anyone else’s happiness – that is their’s to own. Spread love, fill some buckets, but ensure you are looking at what is critical for you to move forward beyond just meeting everyone else’s needs. My mother swears by the book “When Pleasing Others is Hurting You” (http://amzn.to/2xyfzJ2) 3: Underpromise, Overdeliver Be careful what you commit to, and ensure you can really follow through. If you can’t show up on time, don’t say you can. Don’t accept a project if your plate is already full. Don’t commit to a deadline that is going to require you to forfeit eating and sleeping to meet it. “I have a commitment”. Don’t feel pressure to respond immediately - say “let me check my schedule and get back with you” so you aren’t making a decision under pressure. It’s okay to say no - provide another resource so it’s not just no, but you offer a solution. 4: Wiggle Room Allow for wiggle room. Don’t overcommit your day so there is no down time. We all need rest and we need time to create, process, and think. Don’t jam pack your day where it’s a marathon. That is a sure-fire way to create burnout. Don’t live for that one day when you can rest again. Intentionally allow that down time every day so you aren’t running on fumes. On that whole “productive” concept. Let me get one thing straight: Rest IS productive. Don’t negate your down time. It’s critical to your health, both mentally and physically. Give yourself grace to veg. Recommended Read: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert (http://amzn.to/2yy1Lhx) Give your creativity a name and spend time with it. Invite it into your life, and sit with it every day. Creating a Haven of Peace: When Your Feeling Down, Finances Are Flat, and Tempers Are Rising by Joanne Miller (http://amzn.to/2xpQyzv) This is Ashley’s family story written by her mother, with great insights in creating that haven of peace in your home. 5: Timeblock Schedule the fire out of your day. We’ve found flex time during the middle of the day is fine, but the morning and the evening have such a huge impact on how our days can get away from us. Do you want to be a human “being” or a human “doing”? Recommended Read: The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr. This is such an incredible book to ensure you are really performing at your peak by being fully present in what you are doing at that moment. The bane of many entrepreneurs is our ability to work anytime we want…which means we are always working and doing “just one more thing.” Those “just one more things”: checking facebook, answering another email, doing one more edit, etc are all areas where the day can get away from us. Your “one thing” can take you down a four hour bunny trail. Schedule your work time, and your play time. Do these with the same priority level. My nightly date with Nathan is just as important as my podcast interview. Don’t negate the importance of life beyond work. We want to really live, not simply trudge through. Enjoy this life, and make that a critical component of your day. 6: Bookend Your Day On that note, bookending our day has been huge. We prep our coffee in the evenings so it’s ready to go. Our family agrees on what we are going to have for breakfast so it’s no shock in the morning. Nathan and I discuss the night before what we need to accomplish the next morning. Set your goals based on the feeling behind them, not just the lofty goal. What is the emotion behind it all? Recommended Read: The Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte (http://amzn.to/2kxSjoi). This book rocked me with the concept of one thing: “What is the feeling behind the goal you set?” This is fabulous in writing or audio, and was a pivotal book in directing my life of travel. Your Life Is Your Responsibility Like I’ve written so many times, we are in charge of our lives. We have the power to create with intention, or live in reaction. When we are consistent and stick to a schedule, we find we feel way more in control of our lives – living with intention and not just reacting as life passes us by. Care for some Q&A? Dave talks Maryland hoops, the future of sports information work in a SnapChat world, and how to foster an ideas driven office culture. Introduction: Hey everyone and welcome to the All-Star Leader Podcast, where together we learn about leadership from the best and brightest, and keep it fun by connecting it to our passion for sports! I'm your host Daniel Hare, and today we are talking with the Commissioner of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Dave Haglund. Dave is in his fifth year at the GNAC after serving in the same role at the Cascade Collegiate Conference, and prior to that spent a combined 27 years in media relations at the University of Maryland and Fresno State University. This is Dave Haglund. Dave thanks so much for coming on the show! Interview Questions: So I don't think we've talked about this before, but if my timing is right I was on the basketball staff at Oklahoma and you were at Maryland when we played in 2001 in Cole Fieldhouse. Maryland won in a very good, rare out-of-conference February game. What do you remember about that one?! First year Maryland went to the Final Four; Juan Dixon was scoreless in the first half, changed shoes and led Now that we have that out of the way, let's start at the beginning. You grew up in Portland; so you're back in your hometown. What was it like growing up there and what were some of your early interactions with the sports world? Grew up an Oregon State fan; Portland Timbers were big and he went to some of those playoff games; and then Trailblazers were big as well Always devoured the sports page; after high school got a sports clerk job at a local newspaper The Oregon Journal which launched his career You went to Oregon State for college; what was that experience like and how did it move you closer to the career you ultimately decided on? The ability to make connections were big, which led to more opportunities; Oregon Journal editor called the Oregon State SID and helped Dave get a job there as a student Big round table in the Oregon State SID room where Dave worked; and Ralph Miller (OSU men's basketball coach) would use that table and Dave's chair to talk to the media after games How did you wind up at Fresno State? Who had an impact on you during your time there and how? What did you learn from a leadership standpoint during your time at Fresno State that still impacts you today. Scott Johnson was assistant SID at Oregon State and got hired at Fresno State as the head SID; offered Dave a job, and he had a job from Oregon State upon graduation as well Three coaches: men's soccer coach Jose Elgorriaga helped him with his confidence; baseball coach Bob Bennett taught him hard work and standing up for your program; football coach Jim Sweeney too. You were at Fresno for a couple of years of Jerry Tarkanian. What can you share about him and his leadership style? Enjoyed working with Tark; easy to work with He was a celebrity coach, and he returned to Fresno which was his hometown after a long, stellar career As a PR person, having someone the media wanted to talk to all the time was great for the job and career There was always controversy that followed him and his program that you had to deal with What drew you to Maryland? Same question: Who had an impact on you during your time there and how? What did you learn from a leadership standpoint during your time at Fresno State that still impacts you today. Leap of faith to move to a new part of the country and a new conference, etc. Hired Ralph Friedgen and went to an Orange Bowl Back to back final fours and a national championship in 2002 As a media relations professional, what were the benefits and challenges of being in the massive media market of Washington, D.C.? Number one benefit was the exposure because of the number of media outlets that were covering you When men's basketball went to the NCAA Tournament, they would take 80 media members along with them Always in the public eye; USA Today, CNN, PBS are right there, so anything a national sports news issue arose, those outlets would want to interview Maryland athletics' staff Let's pause here and drill down on your area of expertise for a moment. Where do you think the traditional area of media relations/sports information is going in the age of SnapChat, Instagram and Facebook? Wishes he was an SID with all the new media Athletic departments and coaches can communicate directly with their fans; this is a great thing! Create your own content in different forms and deliver it, and not need the media Balance between the old and new; the old doesn't totally go away; example is the hardcopy media guides are now gone You left Maryland to take the Commissioner position at the Cascade Conference. Can you talk a little about the motivations behind that move out of major Division I athletics and also out of media relations? Who are a few of the Cascade schools so our audience has some frame of reference? Always thought the Maryland time was temporary and would want to go back home Took a risk by leaving Division I and taking on a commissioner role of an NAIA league Was a one-man band and worked out of his home Was able to bring several national championships to the Portland area 11 institutions in three states: Oregon, Washington and Idaho; supportive presidents and good ADs; Oregon Tech won the men's basketball national championship (Daniel asks about future of NAIA) – they have lost 50+ schools to NCAA Division II in recent years but this has slowed; and Dave thinks there is a place for the NAIA; they are at 240 or 250 schools right now. Then we stole you away at the GNAC in 2011; talk about taking over that role and some of the challenges you've faced. The vast footprint: Alaska, Oregon, Montana, Idaho and Alaska; plus Canada; there's a lot of travel and air travel There was only one postseason championship at the time, and he added baseball, softball and soccer Small college football in the west is very challenging; there just aren't many schools playing; GNAC has five members and plays a double round robin Next year, men's women's basketball championship will be in Alaska this year The air/long-trip leagues are financially challenging because it really is a cost of living increase to compete at the same level Something I like to ask all our guests who have worked in conference offices: how do you go about getting individual schools to put their own best interest aside for the greater good of the conference? (if at all?!) Teamwork; everyone matters ADs have an understanding of what it takes to make the conference work; they are collegial and know there are times when what's good for the group might not be good for them as an individual school, and they are okay with that. Audience question from John Owen: How do you communicate so your team feels welcome to talk to you and bring new ideas? (from email list daniel@allstarleaderpodcast.com) Keep an open door; pop into people's offices and shoot the breeze; when you're relaxed and talking about what's going on, new ideas will come that are worthy Five rapid fire questions Name one trait or characteristic you look for when you hire someone. Work ethic and desire What habit has been key to your success? Underpromise and overdeliver Most important app or productivity tool? iPhone and Dropbox Most influential leader you've personally been around? Debbie Yow (N.C. State AD) One sentence of advice for emerging leaders? Don't remain in your comfort zone too long. GNAC happenings Four final fours in 2016; three teams reached the national championship; Western Washington won the women's soccer national championship Women in Sports Career Seminar – Saturday, April 8th, Portland (3rd annual) 10-15 panelists of women working in sports industry Open to high school/college students interested in pursuing a career in sports WOU Director of Sports Performance Cori Metzgar (Episode 3 guest) has been a panelist @davehaglundgnac on Twitter; @gnacsports Thank Yous/Acknowledgements: Antioch Live/Clear Day Media Group – music More here. Crowdfunding Uncut | Kickstarter| Indiegogo | Where Entrepreneurs Get Funded
For any crowdfunding campaign, connecting with the target market early is essential to getting backers and achieving your goals. Peter Li of Atlas Wearables shares the pre-campaign process and the value of building an email list early in order to achieve the goals of his campaign. He shares with Khierstyn many tips and strategies that truly set his brand apart from others and allowed Atlas to well exceed their goals. Peter offers advice to new funders who are ready to tackle their goals. Peter Li launched a high-tech product and understood his market from the beginning. The first product launched by Altas Wearables was the Atlas Wristband, a high-tech fitness tracker that leaves its competitors in the dust. The mind-boggling capabilities of this one-of-a-kind tracker sets it apart from the rest, which Peter knew would give him the edge when it came to crowdfunding. The key was to start spreading the word early and gain the attention of the target market in order to get the backers they needed. Peter shares the timeline leading up to the campaign and how he approached building his email list. Because of the unique nature of his product, it was all about connecting with the people who were looking for a solution to the problem the Atlas Wristband solves. Using events and networking to build your list. Peter Li believes in keeping your foot on the gas throughout the campaign when it comes to networking. In the 9 months prior to the campaign, the Atlas team attended events, meetups and conferences where their audience would be. This allowed them to build their list, network, and connect with people who could propel the campaign forward. The most important part of building an email list? Understanding the problem and how your product solves it. Peter also shares why they chose crowdfunding instead of going straight to retail, knowing how unique the product was. How did you maintain momentum throughout the campaign? Maintaining momentum is key to the long-term success of your campaign. Altas Wearables started off strong, hitting their goal early in the game. But, how did they maintain this momentum? According to Peter, it’s all about continuing to network even after your campaign has started. He shares the importance of continuing to get the word out and how it really lies on the shoulders of the funder to make sure that happens. For Altas, that meant going to gyms, races, and fitness events because that’s where they would find people who needed their product. Peter goes on to share the role of PR and paid marketing in the Atlas campaign. Peter’s biggest tips for crowdfunders as they approach their campaign. The Atlas Wearables campaign was a huge success and Peter offers his advice to crowdfunders who are approaching their first campaign: Underpromise and Overdeliver. He explains the importance of this in the long-term success of the company and the satisfaction of the backers. Peter also explains why they chose Indiegogo and if they would go with Indiegogo again for a future campaign. This chat with Peter Li is filled with valuable insight into the pre-campaign process you can implement into your own strategy.
