Lili Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a Ph.D. candidate whose impulsive kiss with intimidating professor Dr. Adam Carlsen, played by Tom Bateman, launches an increasingly complicated fake relationship. Greg & Tara react to the hallway kiss, Olive and Adam's fake-dating rules, the campus carry, the hotel's “only one bed” predicament, the steamy romance, and the dramatic conference involving Dr. Tom Benton. The Love Hypothesis Full Movie Reaction Watch Along:   / thereelrejects   Directed by Claire Scanlon (Set It Up, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and based on Ali Hazelwood's bestselling BookTok novel, The Love Hypothesis stars Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith (Riverdale, Hustlers), Tom Bateman as Dr. Adam Carlsen (Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile), Rachel Marsh as Anh Pham (Fallout, Adults), Jaboukie Young-White as Malcolm Browne (Only Murders in the Building, Strange World), Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy Langley (The White Lotus, Bel-Air), and Arty Froushan as Dr. Tom Benton (Carnival Row, House of the Dragon). The 2010s were a transformation decade for television. By 2013 Netflix had introduced the concepts of streaming and binge-watching, and within a few years Hulu, Apple TV, Prime Video, and other streamers would also get into the original programming game. These new services green lit high-concept, expensive projects, leading to an entertainment arms race for cutting-edge creators and big stars. Legacy media had to take increasingly big swings to remain relevant, and the result is an incredibly competitive crop of series that, 10-plus years later, still remain commercially and critically relevant. That's especially true in the comedy space, so join the Great Pop Culture Debate as we attempt to name the best TV Comedy Series of the 2010s.Shows discussed: “Parks and Recreation,” “The Good Place,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Schitt's Creek,” “Veep,” “30 Rock,” “Broad City,” “New Girl,” “Superstore,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “Community,” “Fleabag,” “Grace & Frankie,” “Black-ish,” “Bob's Burgers”Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Amma Marfo, Brendan Hay, Joelle Boedecker, and Paul Caiola from the “That Aged Well” podcast as they discuss and debate 16 of the most beloved comedies to air on American TV between 2010 and 2019.For the warm-up to this episode, in which we discuss additional 2010s comedies that didn't make the bracket, become a Patreon supporter of the podcast today. Joe Lo Truglio joins The A Game Podcast with Nick Lamagna for a powerful conversation about success, patience, persistence, creativity, rejection, collaboration and what it really takes to build a career that lasts. Joe is an actor, writer, producer and director best known for playing Charles Boyle on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as well as unforgettable roles in Superbad, Paul, Reno 911!, The State, Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models, Wanderlust, I Love You, Man, Pitch Perfect and many more. He is also featured in the new comedy Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, directed by David Wain and written by David Wain and Ken Marino. This special throwback episode is being re-released to celebrate Joe and the longtime creative team behind The State continuing to work together decades later. One of the biggest themes in this conversation is something almost every entrepreneur, investor, creator or ambitious person struggles with: What happens when success takes longer than you expected? Joe talks openly about the moments when he questioned whether he should continue acting at all, considered completely different careers, and wondered whether the business was still worth it. His answer wasn't some magical motivation hack. It was realizing that if you truly love the work, you have to give yourself enough time to become who you are capable of becoming. Joe also explains why impatience can convince you that you are on the wrong path when you may simply be too early. He discusses learning to trust his own timeline, continue taking action through disappointment, and remember that neither failure nor success lasts forever. In this episode, Joe and Nick talk about: Why most people underestimate how long meaningful success can take The difference between persistence and continuing down a path you no longer love How Joe handled years of rejection and uncertainty in Hollywood Why you need to give yourself enough time to discover what makes you different The importance of recognizing small victories instead of dismissing them Why surrounding yourself with people who are better than you raises your own level How collaboration helped shape The State, Reno 911! and Brooklyn Nine-Nine Why ego can destroy creative teams How to use jealousy and comparison as fuel instead of allowing them to become resentment Why social media is a terrible place to look for validation How Joe learned to trust criticism from people he respects instead of strangers online Why there really is "enough for everybody" The exact moment Joe finally felt like he had made it in Hollywood How becoming a husband and father changed his definition of success Why the best projects often come from working with people you genuinely like The importance of staying creative and continuing to make things even during difficult periods Joe also shares one of the most valuable lessons from his decades-long career: surround yourself with people who are better than you and be willing to learn from them instead of feeling threatened by them. He credits collaboration and removing ego from the process as major reasons some of his most rewarding projects worked so well. And for anyone who feels behind, Joe has a simple message for his younger self: chill out, trust that your time will come, and don't ignore the small victories you already have. Science Faction Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 26, 2026 71:23

This week, the Science Faction crew has rats, road trips, gaming marathons, and some surprisingly good superhero television before asking an important question: what happens when your dog gets its own digital assistant? We also look at a new weapon in the fight against AI scraping and tease what Steven has coming next week. Real Life Ben has some unfortunate pet news this week: tumors have appeared on one of the family rats. Meanwhile, the "fat" rat has been put on a diet, so apparently even the rodents are dealing with health and wellness goals. On the entertainment side, Ben wonders whether Star Trek: Strange New Worlds may finally be getting a little too strange. Joe Lo Truglio, best known as Charles Boyle on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, enters the conversation and gives us plenty to talk about. Devon has returned from Boston — but not the band. While there, he took one of the city's famous duck tours aboard an amphibious vehicle and ventured out on a ghost tour populated mostly by people in character. Somewhere along the way, we also discover that Devon may be skeptical about cemeteries. Thankfully, he has no tumor news to report. Steven, meanwhile, had an epic gaming weekend. That included Marvel Zombies, a game of Dungeon Crawl Classics, and a trip into the weird west with We Deal in Lead. He also checked out Lanterns and came away impressed. It's a genuinely good police procedural made for adults that also happens to exist in a comic-book universe. Future or Now Ben starts us off with a question inspired by something he saw on a morning walk: What if your digital assistant lived on your dog's collar? Imagine a near-future version of Dug from Up. We're probably not about to translate canine brain waves into speech, but a smart collar equipped with local AI, sensors, and a memory of your dog's life could do quite a bit. The collar could remember veterinary instructions and medication schedules, giving owners an easy way to keep track of their pet's care. That could be especially useful for elderly pet owners or anyone managing a complicated treatment schedule. It could also provide context when something goes wrong. If your dog eats something it shouldn't, sensors and location data might help determine where it happened and what the animal encountered. Instead of answering the vet's questions with a shrug, you'd potentially have an actual record. Then there's passive health monitoring. Think of it as an Apple Watch for dogs: heart rate, temperature, activity, blood oxygen, sleep, and other measurements tracked continuously. Rather than waiting for obvious symptoms, changes from an individual animal's normal baseline could provide an early warning that something isn't right. But putting an always-listening, always-sensing computer around your dog's neck creates an obvious problem: privacy. The device potentially knows where you go, when you're home, what your routines look like, and even what your house sounds like. Who owns that information? Where is it stored? Who can access it? A completely local system trained only around the pet could mitigate some of those concerns, but the temptation to turn that information into another giant pool of commercially valuable data would be enormous. That's the tension at the heart of the idea. The same technology could have tremendous benefits for animal health and welfare while simultaneously creating another surveillance system following us through our daily lives. We've already seen how technologies like automated license-plate readers can expand far beyond their original use cases. Ben would very much prefer that his helpful talking dog collar not eventually become the Canine Gestapo. Devon brings us another front in the ongoing battle over AI and the internet: "Devious New Font Turns AI Scrapers Into Mincemeat." Researchers have developed a font designed to remain readable to humans while confusing automated systems scraping text for AI. The idea opens up a much larger discussion about the future of AI training, ownership of online material, and whether technical tools can give creators more control over how their work is collected and used. If AI is going to remain part of our lives, finding ways to build systems around ethically sourced data may become increasingly important. Steven doesn't have a Future or Now story this week—but that's because he's saving something for next time. Consider this your tease for next week's episode.

He also worked on The Office and played Mose, Dwight's delightfully odd cousin. Impressive credentials, of course—but most importantly to us, he's a massive baseball fan. That may even be underselling it. Mike joins Tim Kurkjian and Jeff to talk baseball, including the fact that both he and Tim were at Pedro Martínez's legendary 17-strikeout game against the Yankees. Was that the greatest pitching season ever? The three also dive into their shared love of storytelling and why the best baseball stories often stick with us as much as the games themselves. Is it any surprise that one of television's great writers appreciates a great story? Schur also praises the Brewers for their knack for pulling off incredible trades and shares his deep admiration for Shohei Ohtani, encouraging everyone to appreciate just how remarkable a player he is. And, of course, there's Mike's new book, Big Fan: Two Friends, 82,490 Miles, and the Wild, Wonderful Sports We Love, co-authored with sportswriter Joe Posnanski. Released in May 2026, the book explores fandom across sports, music, and beyond, celebrating the passion that brings people together. Pick up a copy online or wherever books are sold. One quick editorial note: this episode was recorded on June 10, just one day before Jeff and his wife, Emily, welcomed their son, Bodie, into the world. Gershon's newest book AlphaPussy: How I Survived the Valley and Learned to Love My Boobs, looks back at how she learned to survive and thrive in Hollywood, tracing her brilliant and unique career to find cautionary tales, turning points, and everything in between. On April 3, 2026, Gina Gershon came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater for an onstage conversation with Gina Pell, Content Chief of The What.

Skywalking Through Neverland: A Star Wars / Disney Fan Podcast

Are you wondering whether Wonder Man is worth your time? In this episode, we break down Marvel's latest Disney+ series, give you the essential background on the character, and explain what you actually need to know before diving in. From Simon Williams' comic book origins to his surprising connections with Vision, Scarlet Witch, and the Avengers, we cover the fun facts, controversies, and powers that shaped Wonder Man long before his MCU debut. We also dig into how Wonder Man fits into the MCU under the Marvel Spotlight banner—designed to be more grounded, character-driven, and accessible without deep MCU homework. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a struggling actor hiding dangerous superpowers, and Ben Kingsley returning as Trevor Slattery, the series leans hard into Hollywood satire, mentorship, and the bizarre "Doorman Clause" that bans super-powered people from acting. Our reactions are… mixed. While the show shines as a personal story about ambition, insecurity, and creative survival—anchored by a standout performance from Ben Kingsley—it struggles with tone, realism, and the weight of its MCU identity. We talk about what works, what doesn't, and whether Wonder Man feels like a forgotten experiment or a meaningful setup for something bigger down the road. Watch the YouTube version here for the best experience. Listen to the podcast episode here: Written WONDER MAN Review Wonder Man is the 19th television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including both live-action and animated projects) and arrives as part of Phase 6. The series was created by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Andrew Guest (Hawkeye, Community, Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, crossing superhero franchises after playing Black Manta in DC's Aquaman films, stars as Simon Williams, a struggling actor auditioning for the lead in a remake of Wonder Man, a low-budget 1980s action film that Simon once bonded over with his father. Simon carries a dangerous secret: he has explosive superpowers that he can't fully control. Worse, he must keep those powers hidden if he wants any chance at an acting career thanks to the Doorman Clause, a rule that bars super-powered individuals from working as actors. One episode dives into the origins of this clause, and it's easily among the series' most entertaining and imaginative chapters. Ben Kingsley returns as Trevor Slattery, the infamous actor hired to portray the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Since then, the character has appeared in the Marvel short All Hail the King and film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Here, Trevor is once again chasing relevance—and is also auditioning for a role in the Wonder Man remake. Interestingly, the series never clearly states where it fits into the MCU timeline. There are only light references—photos on walls, casual mentions of "shield throwing." Frankly, that restraint is welcome. It's firmly set in the present day on the main MCU Earth, and that's more than enough. Had this been set on another timeline or Earth, this review probably wouldn't exist. Character Over Capes At its core, this is a strong, personal story about two people supporting each other in a brutal industry. Simon approaches acting with intense seriousness—reminiscent of Dustin Hoffman's character in Tootsie—while Trevor, as a mentor figure, pushes him to loosen up and trust the words on the page. Wonder Man is far more interested in the relationship between Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery than in building a new costumed icon. Through their conversations, the series thoughtfully explores what it actually means to be an actor. Abdul-Mateen II and Kingsley make for an engaging, surprisingly balanced duo. The show wisely avoids leaning into easy odd-couple clichés, which elevates their dynamic. If you enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at show business in The Studio or Hacks, there's a lot here to like. Wonder Man ups the stakes by adding uncontrollable superpowers into an already stressful industry where almost nothing goes your way. Tone & Reality Gaps Tonally, Wonder Man struggles. It can't always decide whether it wants to be serious and emotional or silly and farcical. It oscillates between the two. The dialogue is often grounded and well-written, but the situations frequently feel forced—bent to serve the script rather than emerging naturally from reality. Living in Los Angeles, where the series is set, makes some of these moments especially hard to ignore. Being under a tight deadline to submit an audition tape and deciding to drive from Hollywood to Malibu and back—congratulations, you've just wasted three hours. These issues extend to the on-set scenes. Having worked in the film industry, many of these moments rang false. A day player wouldn't halt production because they have extensive notes. There are numerous story hiccups where disbelief must be suspended simply to keep the plot moving. A test audience likely would have flagged many of these. Performances & Standout Moments Any time Ben Kingsley is on screen, he's impossible not to root for. Simon, by contrast, is difficult to like until the final two episodes. That's clearly intentional—he's closed off and emotionally blocked—but watching someone repeatedly sabotage themselves is frustrating, even if it's thematically justified. One unquestionable highlight is the episode centered on the Doorman Clause, "Doorman". Josh Gad's appearance, along with his reworked version of "In Summer," is delightful and injects much-needed energy and creativity into the series. Release Strategy & Final Verdict Marvel continues to undermine its TV output with its release strategy. Ironheart dropped its six episodes across two days. Echo released all five at once. Wonder Man follows suit with all eight episodes dropping in a single day. The result? These shows are consumed quickly and forgotten just as fast. By the time Daredevil Season 2 arrives in March, this will likely be one of those "Oh yeah… what happened on Wonder Man again?" series.I went in with an open mind and high expectations—this is Marvel, after all. In the end, I liked Wonder Man, but too much got in the way of loving it. SPONSORS Small World Vacations is an official sponsor of Skywalking Through Neverland. Neverland Clubhouse: A Sister's Guide Through Disney Fandom

Michael Schur is the creative force behind some of the most beloved comedies of the past two decades: The Good Place, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and most recently, A Man On The Inside, starring Ted Danson. If Mike's face looks familiar, it might be from his scene-stealing performance as Mose Schrute on The Office, on which Mike was also a writer. Mike's shows have a distinctive signature: they don't just make you laugh – they make you think about morality and what it means to be human. Along the way, they might just make you cry. In this episode, Mike charts the songs and milestones that turned him into the writer he is today – from the Neutral Milk Hotel album that taught him to wear his heart on his sleeve, to the fender bender that sparked an existential crisis that would become The Good Place, to the Taylor Swift song that pulled him out of a creative rut during the pandemic. It's a conversation about how art teaches us to feel, and how those feelings become the stories we tell. Here are his songs. “Weird Al” Yankovic, “Eat It” The Beatles, “A Day in the Life” Indigo Girls, “Kid Fears” Neutral Milk Hotel, “Ghost” Derek and the Dominos, “Key to the Highway” Arvo Pärt, “Spiegel im Spiegel” Taylor Swift, “gold rush”

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two old friends who've worked together on such culture-crushing songs as “Dick in a Box”—one of whom is known more for the music, and the other for the funny. It's Andy Samberg and Asa Taccone. Samberg you surely know for his years on Saturday Night Live and Brooklyn Nine-Nine and tons of big movies. Before all that he was part of the trio The Lonely Island, which blew up on SNL with “Dick in a Box,” among other hilarious jams. The Lonely Island also features Jorma Taccone, and when Samberg and Taccone needed some musical help for their SNL shorts, they would often call Jorma's brother Asa, who helped them shape “Dick in a Box,” “Motherlover” and plenty of other songs. But Asa's less inclined toward the funny stuff that his childhood friends are known for; he's been making his own decidedly less silly music since 2011 in collaboration with Matthew “Cornbread” Compton under the name Electric Guest. The duo just released their first album since 2019, and it's called 10K—you'll hear the meaning behind the name in this chat. As you'll hear, there's no jokey rap to be found, just a compelling mix of soulful pop: You might not be surprised to learn that in recent years Taccone has also collaborated with the likes of The Weeknd and Carly Rae Jepsen. Check out “Play Your Guitar” from 10K right here. As you'll hear, Samberg and Taccone are pretty comfortable with each other, because their friendship goes way back. They talk about Samberg's decision to take a swing at the big time, Lonely Island deep cuts, and the alternate name that Electric Guest briefly considered. Enjoy. Here's a puzzle that will stop you cold: ADHD has exploded into public consciousness. More diagnoses than ever. More research. More conversations. And yet? Turn on your television. What stares back at you?The class clown. The scatterbrained sidekick. The walking punchline.Something doesn't add up.This disconnect—between lived reality and screen reality—forms the heart of this week's conversation with Matthew Fox, whose passion for dissecting genre media runs as deep as his own neurodivergent experience. Fox hosts Superhero Ethics and other podcasts that examine the ethics woven through our most beloved stories. But today, they're hunting bigger game.Consider this: Maria von Trapp. "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" Sound familiar? Fox argues she's ADHD incarnate. Flighty. Unpredictable. Out of focus. The nuns can't pin her down. Neither can we, apparently. Because nobody—not once—uses the words. That's the pattern. Characters burst with hyperactivity, impulsivity, attention challenges. Dennis the Menace in the '50s. Tigger bouncing through the Hundred Acre Wood. Calvin racing after imaginary adventures. All ADHD-coded. None explicitly labeled. Why does this matter? Because children search desperately for themselves in stories. Adults do too, though less consciously. When representation gets frozen in stereotype—or worse, buried in subtext—it shapes how teachers see students, how employers evaluate talent, how we see ourselves. The conversation zigzags through terrain both familiar and startling. Percy Jackson, where ADHD becomes a god-given power. Phil Dunphy, the endearing but scattered dad. Jake Peralta solving crimes through controlled chaos. Then the darker territory: Barney Stinson using ADHD as an excuse for predatory behavior. But here's where it gets interesting. Fox notices something that escaped everyone else: the gender patterns. Hyperactive male character? Meet his organized, grounding female partner. It's everywhere once you see it. Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Modern Family. New Girl. The narrative is always the same—love of a steady woman tames the chaotic man.And buried within all of this lies a more uncomfortable truth. In our hunger to see ourselves on screen, we claim characters who were never intended as representation. We read ADHD into Kirk and Spock, into Hiccup and his dragon, into anyone who shows even a glimmer of recognition. Is that enough? Should it be?Whether you're searching for positive examples for your children or trying to untangle how decades of media have shaped your own relationship with neurodivergence, this conversation might just shift how you watch ... everything.Links & NotesShows and MoviesModern Family - Phil Dunphy as ADHD-coded characterBrooklyn Nine-Nine - Jake Peralta as positive ADHD representationHow I Met Your Mother - Barney Stinson as problematic ADHD portrayalNew Girl - Nick and Jess relationship dynamicThe Simpsons - Bart Simpson and Ritalin episode (2000)Community - Abed Nadir as autism-coded characterParenthood (TV series) - Autism representationArrow - Felicity Smoak as ADHD-coded characterK-pop Demon Hunter - Zoe as positive ADHD representationThe Sound of Music - Maria von Trapp as ADHD-codedFinding Nemo/Finding Dory - Dory as ADHD representationHow to Train Your Dragon - Hiccup as ADHD-codedBooks and CharactersPercy Jackson series by Rick Riordan - ADHD as demigod traitCalvin and Hobbes - Calvin as ADHD-codedDennis the Menace - Classic hyperactive representationWinnie the Pooh characters as neurodivergent representationPodcasts by Matthew FoxThe Ethical PandaSuperhero EthicsStar Wars GenerationsMarvel Movie Minute (co-hosted with Pete Wright)The Once and Future Parent(Coming soon!)Links & NotesSupport the Show on PatreonDig into the podcast Shownotes Database (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (01:22) - Support the Show and Become a Patron!
