Do you find yourself saying YES to things that you would rather be saying NO to?  I used to be guilty of this myself. That's right, I'm a recovering YES-aholic! Like, it's a fact… As salon owners and creative entrepreneurs (and women in particular), we try to do it all.   In fact, we overdo it more than we'd care to admit. Often without even realising, we spend so much of our energy trying to please everyone, saying yes to everything that comes our way, and constantly putting ourselves last to ensure our teams, our partners, and our family are happy.  But what does this leave us with?   Not the feeling of success and fulfillment that we'd hoped for, but actually the feeling of burnout and exhaustion. And what good can come from you feeling like this?  So it's time we ditch this endless cycle we've managed to get ourselves stuck in,  and create a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle, so we can continue to reach success in our salons.    That's why I want to introduce Sonya Stattmann - a business and leadership coach and host of the podcast “Women in the Business Arena”.  Sonya is going to share her tried-and-tested strategies for how to stop the monster of comparison and avoid burnout and overwhelm.   Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn how to start saying no to things that you don't want to do Discover how to overcome burnout and overwhelm with 3 simple strategies How to conserve your energy in different parts of your life to focus on the things that matter  Inner Salon CEO Snapshot https://bit.ly/MasterCEO (CLICK HERE) to get your hands on it Let's chat… I'd like to chat with you a bit more about your business and how I may be able to help you. Each one of us has our own Truth. It's the sum of our deepest needs, our dearest values, and our most strongly held beliefs. Unfortunately, women leaders are trained to hide parts of themselves, or to water them down to keep other people comfortable.  This episode of Women in the Business Arena is about the power of truth-telling. Not just speaking truth to others, but owning our own Truth and honoring ourselves.  What's standing between you and telling your whole Truth? Is it self-doubt, fear of rejection, or the assumption that you're just Too Much? Laura and I will help you identify and remove those obstacles to being your authentic self, and discover the growth energy we uncover when we stop hiding our essential selves. Join us as we discuss:  Starting our truth-telling with the most important person in our lives: ourselves! Connecting to and trusting your body to help you understand your truth. The unbelievable energy savings we realize when we don't have to guess at each other's emotional states. Trusting ourselves and our energy, and allowing ourselves to express them without fear. Welcome back to a new season of Women in the Business Arena! I'm so excited to spend this season exploring a topic that's extremely personal and powerful to me. As entrepreneurs, we're taught to always be growing: growing our client base, growing our offers, growing our profits. But for so many of us, “bigger” and “better” are actually opposites! Regular co-host and mental health expert Laura Shook-Guzman brings her insight back to our mic, as we introduce you to the possibilities we access when we let go of excess, dissolve old patterns, and remove what no longer serves us. Join us as we discuss:  The real freedom that comes from removing the patterns that no longer serve us. The pressure the business world puts on women entrepreneurs to keep others happy, and never, ever set down a responsibility. Paying attention to the messages our bodies and minds send when we need to simplify. Why it's so important to be thoughtful about where we're directing our energy, our time, and our attention. Welcome back to a new season of Women in the Business Arena! This season is all about growing your business, but maybe not in the way that you think. Traditional, patriarchal business models train us to believe that growth is a matter of adding more: more hustle, more exposure, more offers, more of our precious time and energy. This season, we're here to show you that real growth - sustainable, fulfilling, transformative growth - isn't about adding more. It's about removing the things that don't work, so you can focus on the things that do. Join us as we show you how to identify what supports your genius, and strip away the structures, habits, and beliefs that weigh you down. Thank you for being you. We are so honored to have you as a listener!

“Sometimes as people grow their businesses, instead of achieving the freedom that they had hoped for, they actually end up more tied to their work.” - Sonya StattmannSonya Stattmann & Laura Shook-GuzmanWomen in the Business Arena Misconceptions about the business arena are leading to disturbing trends. Many aspiring entrepreneurs are intrigued by the idea of running their own business. They are excited by the opportunities that a business can provide for them, and the freedom and lifestyle benefits they can enjoy. The appeal of the entrepreneurial life has led to many people rushing out of their traditional nine-to-five jobs in search of better options. “As some industries get flooded and the business environment changes, we need to create different plans and strategies, and we need to find our target market.” - Sonya Stattmann (20:48 -21:07) While the path of an entrepreneur can undoubtedly be advantageous if done right, it is often misunderstood. The perception of freedom is a big driver for many that are thinking of starting their own businesses. But a lot of them haven’t defined what freedom really means to them. Financial success doesn't always equal freedom. Running a successful business can be complicated and time-consuming, and it might even result in less freedom. Some of these common misconceptions about being an entrepreneur are leading to some disturbing trends in the business arena. Some of the recent troublesome trends emerging in the business arena. Unrealistic Expectations - An excessive amount of hype around the idea of entrepreneurship, combined with the low barriers of entry, has led to unrealistic expectations of what it’s like to run a business. While it’s certainly great to have sources of inspiration and to dream big, the expectations also need to be based on reality. You don’t need a 20-page business plan in the traditional sense, but you do need a logical action plan and a solid foundation. You need to know who is your target market, if they really want or need what you’re offering, and how you plan on selling it to them. Saturated Markets - Some markets that were wide open even a few years ago are now getting flooded with new providers. This is especially true for service businesses like coaches and consultants, and also for some product businesses. To be successful in these markets today, you need to think differently and differentiate yourself from everyone else. One way to do that is to get really specific about who you’re helping. It’s not enough to say you work with non-profits, or with moms that are entrepreneurs. You have to niche down, but you also need to make sure you’re in a market with more demand than supply. Investing in the Wrong Things - Bootstrapping your business can be valuable, especially when you’re starting out. However, there are times when you do need to invest in yourself and your business to evolve to the next level. The problem is, many entrepreneurs are investing in the wrong things at the wrong time. The first thing you need to solidify is your foundation. Know precisely who you’re helping, what problem you’re solving for them, and how you’re selling to them. If you don’t have a solid foundation yet, it might be a good idea to invest in a business coach with experience in your industry to help you through the initial stages. “The more specific you are with your target market, the more you can move towards collaborating instead of competing with other providers in your industry.” - Sonya Stattmann (24:47 - 24:53) Many women in the business arena are experiencing exhaustion and burnout. Some are burning out because they aren’t experiencing any success, while others are running out of steam from running a business that has grown too big, without the proper infrastructure, rendering them incapable of making the impact they hoped for. Regardless of why we find ourselves in a season of burn out, it all comes back to the basics. Taking the time to slow down, being deliberate in contemplating business decisions, and investing in a coach or mentor will help build a solid business foundation. When you get clear on the foundation of your business, you will be able to avoid the destructive trends, and build a business that lasts. “I don’t know if business owners stop often enough to really evaluate how they are managing their energy, stress, and emotions.” - Sonya Stattmann (5:51 - 6:03)Sonya Stattmann & Guest Kathryn StonemanWomen in the Business Arena    Kathryn Stoneman is a children’s movement & mindfulness trainer, and she is the Founder of Bearfoot Yoga. She has taught movement and mindfulness to hundreds of children along the Central Coast of Australia and now trains early childhood educators to deliver movement and mindfulness program within their schools. It is her life purpose to bring the many benefits of movement & mindfulness to as many kids as possible.   Mindfulness is incredibly beneficial for children, but also for entrepreneurs.   Mindfulness is a practice that involves taking some time during the day to slow down and focus on your thoughts, emotions, and feelings. It could also mean a quick movement session to move your body gently and let go of stress. It is a practice that has been around for ages in different traditional cultures across the globe, and it has been gaining in popularity in the West over the last few decades. There are many benefits of mindfulness practices for both adults as well as children.   The impact of mindfulness is quite amazing when children start practicing at an early stage. Young kids are generally running around all day, and it is often difficult to capture their attention. When they take a few minutes to sit down and focus on their breath or to do yoga, they immediately feel the effects. They end up with a calmer mind and body. They play better with other kids, and they are more joyful throughout the day. When they start mindfulness practices at a young age, it becomes a part of their routine as they get older.   So many entrepreneurs can use these lessons in their day-to-day operations, taking the time to slow down and be more mindful of their actions and reactions in business.   Kathryn has been a participant in the Women in the Arena program and talked first hand about having a coach and support group.   “It was incredible to have the support of a coach and to hear that it was OK to slow down. Now I have more space in my mind during the day, and I feel like I’m making more impact with less work.” - Kathryn Stoneman (14:03 - 14:20)   As business owners, we often start our days with a to-do list and go all day without having a chance to stop. Naturally, we end up exhausted at the end of the day and can often struggle to feel like we are fully present with our families. Incorporating a meditation, mindfulness or movement practice can empower us to be able to be the best versions of ourselves. As little as 15 minutes of self-regulated breathing or visualization can have a significant impact. When we clear up space in our minds and calendars, it is completely possible to get more done with less effort. This freedom will have a positive effect on our businesses, and our relationship with our families. The Women In The Business Arena program helps entrepreneurs be more mindful.   It can be easy to recognize the benefits of daily meditation or movement, but really difficult to feel like we have enough time to actually fit the practice in our schedules. It can feel like there are never enough hours in the day to finish everything. However, it’s quite possible that you are working harder than necessary to achieve the results you desire. When you’re emotions are overly attached to your business, you can work too hard, and find yourself speeding towards burnout.   When we’re in our businesses, often it can be difficult to take an objective look at the work we’re doing. Finding a coach to come alongside and evaluate your business can be one of the most valuable decisions made. Coaches have the perspective needed to make sure there is a solid foundation for branding, messaging, target audience, and other crucial aspects of your business. With help, it’s possible to refocus on tasks that bring the highest returns and eliminate the ones that are just taking up space on the already-too-full calendar. Entrepreneurs often end up making more impact with less effort after working with a coach.   With more time on our hands, we can make space for mindfulness practices. We have the ability to slow down, listen to our gut, and make business decisions that are aligned with our mission. Investing in a coach can bring returns that have a positive effect on more than just the business. When your mind is free of stress, and you know the company is running efficiently, you can be more present for your family as well.   “I make all my educators do something lovely for themselves every week. Whether that's a bubble bath and wine, or its a walk on the beach by themselves, they all have to do something lovely for themselves.” - Kathryn Stoneman (28:39 - 28:55)   Too many entrepreneurs are doing too much. Many of us have developed a habit of being perpetually busy. Working with a coach and incorporating a daily practice like yoga or meditation helps to simplify business and life. These tools help to create more time and open up the headspace to give the freedom to operate from a place of peace and relaxation. Consequently, we can end up with better physical and emotional health, a fulfilling family life, and a thriving business.   How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion starting next week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/womeninthebusinessarena Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business! EP101: Tips for Navigating Nomadic Life as a Family With Ed Stattmann

“There’s an opportunity for growth with every experience. You’ve got to be open to that growth and willing to take on the opportunities it presents.” - Ed Stattmann (18:43-19:11)Sonya Stattmann & Laura Shook-GuzmanWomen in the Business Arena   Technology and the changing nature of work have allowed entrepreneurs to embark on nomadic adventures. They’re no longer restricted by location or traditional beliefs and structures around work and family.   Along with the incredible experiences that come with nomadic living, challenges are inevitable. This is especially true for families adapting to new environments and trying to make every place feel like home. Knowing how to navigate those unexpected hurdles is crucial to be able to fully experience the nomadic lifestyle while continuing to grow as a family and as a business.   Sonya and Ed Stattmann are living the nomadic life as a family. They’ve gained insights into what it means to create new identities and ways of thinking while making sure that their family’s needs are being met and supported along the way.   “You can never fully prepare for everything you’ll experience on whatever journey you embark on.” - Ed Stattmann (3:37-3:47)   As entrepreneurs, we tend to become used to having a sense of control. That ability to be in control may have even been one of the reasons you began a business in the first place. However, things that are beyond control inevitably arise when living somewhere new. It’s impossible to be fully prepared when you take the leap into a nomadic lifestyle. The best way to adapt to this truth is to learn how to be fully present, allowing yourself to be in the moment, wherever you are.   Difficulties, both expected and unforeseen, are part of the adventure of nomadic living. Focusing on that feeling of being out of control is guaranteed to bring a sense of overwhelm. Instead, when we take the time to reframe each situation, and look for the opportunity within each circumstance, challenges can become opportunities. What can you take away from the challenges that come with nomadic living? How can you use each one to fuel your relationship to your business, your partner, and your entire family?   Navigating the Challenges and Opportunities of Nomadic Living   Traveling the world brings an abundance of joy and pleasure, but there’s also the reality of having to feel uncomfortable at times, shift your identity, and create something new. Nomadic living presents us with an opportunity to redefine ourselves while being present and appreciating whatever comes. The nomadic lifestyle teaches you to be free of your identity. Adopting a new identity can be exciting, emotional, and scary at the same time.   While individual identities are shifting, the family identity grows and evolves as well. It is important to get clear on individual needs as well as those of the entire family. Every family member has unique strengths and weaknesses that need to be considered. Acknowledge those strengths and create a supportive environment where everyone can communicate whatever challenges they may be facing.   “We need to look at what freedom really is and the price we pay for freedom.” - Sonya Stattmann (20:15-20:22)   Nomadic living gives the freedom to make the choices and create the change you want in life. Look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Who do I really want to be?” Who you’ve been and how you’ve done things in the past isn’t necessarily how it has to be. Don’t get stuck in the mentality of who you have felt you wanted to be, or needed to be, until this moment.   Nomadic Living and Teamwork   Living in a new place can bring friction in relationship. When challenges arise between you and your partner, communication is key. The best way to navigate these challenges is to practice responding without reacting or judging. Listening is an essential skill in any relationship. It’s even more important when couples try to navigate a new lifestyle, location, and work life. Taking the time to hear your partner’s needs and adjust accordingly is essential to long-term success in business and at home.   It is crucial for partners to work as a team when living the nomadic life. Avoid operating only from the head. Instead, eliminate preconceived ideas so you can work from the heart. You have the power to decide how you’re going to experience each and every moment. Trying to control, prepare, and resist gets in the way of your ability to lean into life. The better you are at diving into your new nomadic life, the more rewarding your experience and relationships will be.   Nomadic living is a life-changing experience, that is teaching us so much about ourselves, our family, and the world. While it is clear that there are unique challenges that arise in the midst of this adventure, the rewards and experience are so worth it!   How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion! “When your business becomes your lover, how do you navigate that with your partner?” - Laura Shook-Guzman (3:09-3:17)Sonya Stattmann & Laura Shook-GuzmanWomen in the Business Arena   Entrepreneurs are bound to face relationship challenges when starting a new business. Whether it’s managing the relationships you build with your clients or making sure your team members are committed to a shared vision, business owners are no strangers to navigating relationship dynamics.   However, it’s the intimate relationships we have with our partners that can suffer the most. Many women entrepreneurs find it hard to deal with changes in relationship roles, shared finances, and family responsibilities.   “As we forge new ways of working, we have to talk about this in our partnerships and how it changes the way we’re getting our needs met.” Laura Shook-Guzman (37:33-37:56)   Many women take the entrepreneurial leap without thinking about the potential strains on their relationships. Husbands may feel neglected or left out. A business crisis can interrupt vacations or a romantic date. As a business owner, it’s almost impossible to compartmentalize. The strain on relationships can be great, and some couples even eventually decide to throw in the towel, unable to confront painful emotions that are involved. Being aware of the danger of this can help us to approach potential challenges strategically, avoid becoming another statistic, and maintain healthy and longlasting relationships with our partners.   Business Changes That Lead to Relationship Challenges   Changes in our business ultimately affect our relationships, for better or for worse. In long-term relationships, partners tend to find their natural flow of responsibilities at work and home.  However, in entrepreneurship, as a business evolves those roles often have to change. For example, mothers who decide to start a business have less time to meet the needs of their children, causing their partners to have to take on additional duties at home. These growing pain can disrupt the flow at home, and cause tension in relationships.   Finance is one of the leading points of contention between most partners, and one of the main causes of relationship breakdown. Building a business results in huge financial shifts. Financial unpredictability can lead to anxiety and disagreements over money. New businesses can struggle to turn a profit early on. This can drive a wedge between you and your partner.   Conflicts in your business and at home are often charged with emotions, causing communication from a place of reaction instead of thoughtful response. Unpleasant emotions make it hard to be objective in moments when we need to be understanding of the other person’s needs.   In a relationship, especially when starting and running a business, it is understandable and normal to face challenges. Rather than push back against the changes that occur, partners can honor the changes and recognize that things will be difficult at times. This perspective can empower both individuals in the relationship to work together to overcome obstacles and be stronger on the other side.   “When we seek to understand our partners, and we’re open to listening, it becomes easy to resolve conflict.” - Sonya Stattmann (25:45-26:01)   Strategies to Make It Through the Challenges   Here a few strategies to help you navigate your business and relationship challenges. Ask your partner what they need to feel seen or safe. Identify what you need to feel secure in your relationship and business. Reach out to a counsellor or other mediator who can help you address difficult challenges.   Intentional and deliberate actions lead to greater awareness and more effective communication between you and your partner. In the end, you’ll create a relationship and business that is successful and sustainable.   How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion starting next week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/womeninthebusinessarena Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business! EP88: How to Navigate Self-Doubt

Women in the Business Arena

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 23, 2018 40:12

“Our ability to manage our self-doubt is what determines our ability to succeed.” - Sonya   This week on Women in the Business Arena, we’re getting real about self-doubt. Self-Doubt is the number one saboteur in our business. It is a pervasive influence that has shown up in the life of every single woman we’ve ever met. At times, the intensity of our self-doubt can match the intensity of our creativity, fire, excitement, and passion that led us to start a business in the first place. So, if self-doubt is universal, how do we navigate it successfully?   “What we resist persists.” - Laura   As with most feelings that we feel are “negative,” we can falsely assume that if we ignore self-doubt, it will go away. However, the full spectrum of human emotions is actually necessary for us to experience full and successful business and lives, even self-doubt.     Perhaps the most important step to overcoming self-doubt is to practice separating yourself from your fears. When we align our identity with our blocks, we are in danger of going down a shame spiral and sabotaging our success. You are not the sum total of your fears. Separate yourself from your challenges to gain a more accurate perspective of the blocks you are facing. This act can help to foster self-compassion, kindness, and a deeper understanding of self. When we develop this perspective, we have the ability to continue progressing.   “When you start to feel doubt, remember that you’ve done so many things and that you’ve been resilient… It’s acknowledging that self-doubt is real... but know that there are tools, it doesn’t have to sabotage you… it can exist in your experience, but it doesn’t have to be the one that overshadows everything else.” Laura   Self-doubt can manifest itself in many ways. Perhaps you tend to go into action mode and overexert your energy. Or maybe you freeze, seek out step-by-step instructions from trusted individuals, avoid the situation altogether, or become distracted. We can even justify some of these behaviors to ourselves and others. These patterns have been developed over the span of our lives to protect us. They were needed at some point in our lives, but are no longer serving us in a healthy manner. When we begin recognizing the patterns that manifest from our self-doubt, we can take charge, and begin conquering self-doubt.   In some shape or form, self-doubt will never fully go away, and that’s ok. It is possible to thrive and build a successful life while navigating self-doubt. Listen in to learn strategies to handle self-doubt, and to grow more confident in yourself through the process. “You've got to start to look at what it is that will make this holiday season feel really good for your business, and for yourself, and for your family.”   This week on Women in the Business Arena, we’re discussing how to successfully navigate the holidays in our business. The holidays are known for times of rest, and relaxation, time with family, and preparation for the new year. How do we enjoy the rest that comes along with the holiday season, without losing the momentum we’ve worked so hard to establish?   “It's about getting creative and it's about determining what you really want. I think the most important thing is that you keep your momentum up. Because what I see happening around this time period is people start really losing momentum...By the time you get your momentum back up, it's March… that's three months of not enough income, not enough sales.”   Many people limit the success of their business during this season with self-limiting beliefs including the misnomers that everyone checks out for the holidays, no one will want to purchase new services, and that all service sales inevitably slow at this time of year. The truth is, even during the holidays, your business will be as successful as you believe it can be. What is your intention and mindset around taking an intentional pause around the holidays? What are the self-limiting beliefs that are dictating your business choices?   “We sabotage our energy because we overcommit. We try to get too much done. We try to finish everything we had on our to-do list for 2018 to prove to ourselves that we can do it. And then we are quite exhausted going into the New Year. And that's not what this time is about. It's about being able to finish off strong, have an amazing renewal, recovery, relaxation time period, and then jump back in January, refreshed.”   As we approach the holidays, there are some vital questions to ask yourself, in order to find your balance of momentum and rest. What do you want your holidays to feel like? Set the intention now. What are some low-hanging fruits or ways for you to generate some sales efficiently right now? Finally, what is your plan for January? Now is the time to make a plan. Don’t wait until the New Year sneaks up on you to implement at least a loose framework. It is so possible to have a restful, rejuvenating break, while still leaning into the momentum you’ve worked so hard to gain!   Some Topics we talk about in this episode: Introduction - 0:57 Setting Intention with Your Business During the Holidays - 2:44 Creative Ways to Boost Revenue Around the Holidays - 8:36 The Importance of Maintaining Momentum - 13:24 Prioritize and Minimize Your Project List - 17:06 The Value of Repurposing Your Content - 23:31 Wrap-up and Takeaways - 31:22 How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion starting next week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/womeninthebusinessarena Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business! “The people who are truly authentic, the ones who've really done the work, they've worked on the congruence of themselves. They've done the internal work out of the limelight. You cannot do the work in the limelight. Period”   This week on Women in the Business Arena, we are reclaiming the word “authenticity!” There are so many of us that are craving authenticity in our business and life. It seems the word authenticity has been commandeered by society and used for shows of excessive vulnerability, marketing ploys, or as a facade to cover over insecurities.  It is possible to be genuinely authentic in our lives and our businesses.   “The people that I find who are sharing their integration as it's happening, they're actually stopping themselves from having the full integration...the second that you put a selfie on it, the second that you turn it around and do it for someone else, you're stopping the process of your own integration.”   In order to have the freedom to be authentic with others, we are responsible to first do the work in the privacy of our homes, therapist’s office, or with trusted friends and mentors. When we try to find integration in the limelight, posting about it before we have processed it internally, we lose our authenticity. When we achieve integration of that part of ourselves, our authenticity will flow naturally, and others will be drawn to it.   “The more work you do internally, and the more ready you are internally in your business, because you have the right structures, and skills…  the more ready you are, the more authentic you are naturally. You don't have to try to be authentic. You are authentic.”   Authenticity is not something that we have to strive to achieve. When we take the time to discover and take ownership of the parts of ourselves, allowing integration to give way to a confidence, authenticity will naturally flow from us. When we know who we are, and we're doing it with good intention, then it's totally from a powerful place. EP82: How Do We Better Manage Our Energy so We Don't Experience Burnout?

Women in the Business Arena

“You cannot operate a successful sustainable business if you don't know how to manage your energy. It is inevitable that you will burn out, that you will die of exhaustion, that your business will fail because of it.” This week on the Women in the Business Arena podcast, we’re talking about our energy flow. In our modern culture, “busy” and “exhausted” are the norm for entrepreneurs. Is it necessary, though? Do we have to be running ourselves into the ground to have a successful business and life? We don’t believe it has the be this way. That is why it is so important to learn how to properly manage our energy.    “What happens, in general, is that we push ourselves in those low energy times, and then we crash. Then it's days or weeks before we're up again. People don't realize in a business that the momentum you lose by exhausting yourself is not worth it.” Your level of energy is unique to you. Which means, being successful is not about finding more energy, or pushing through exhaustion, but about being a good steward of the energy that you have. In order to do this, it is important to gain personal knowledge of your own rhythm and cycle of energy, and then craft a business that is in alignment with this flow. Instead of going until you crash, and then being forced to take a long period of time because of illness or burnout, give yourself small bits of time, energy snacks, to refuel. Take the time to care for yourself, so your energy lasts longer, and you can be more effective in all areas of your life. “We're so often trying to go out and be responsible for others, hold others, fix others, do all these things that are not ours to do. Then some people start to contemplate, maybe I'm in the wrong business. It's not that they're in the wrong business, it's actually that they're just mismanaging their energy. If they were more present without being responsible for somebody else, they would not be drained by the end of the day.” One of the major culprits of our exhaustion is our tendency to over deliver, and take way too much ownership of our responsibility to the people in our lives - clients, family, friends, etc. To be sustainable, we have to learn how to hold space for others. At times it can feel like a constant struggle to navigate holding space for clients, without taking on their energy. Listen in to hear more about what this looks like, and to learn useful tips to take ownership of your own energy. You don’t have to live life exhausted or run a business to the point of burning out. “There's this illusion or this idea that one day we won’t be juggling anymore, and I think that actually can self-sabotage us because we doubt where we are. We beat ourselves up for where we are, when really it is about learning to navigate the juggle more effectively, not to eliminate the juggle.” This week on the Women in the Business Arena podcast, Sonya and Laura discuss staying sane, amidst the constant juggle of business, family, and life. If you’ve ever entertained the thought that someday, things will get “easier” and there will be less to juggle, you are not alone. The truth is, life will always be full of different components to balance. However, we can juggle them effectively, stay sane, and even find success in the midst of the juggle. “Everything is really an ebb and a flow. So there are going to be times when we're navigating the juggle really well and there are going to be times where we have a lot more to juggle and it becomes the acceptance of where things are and some ability to step back for a second and look at what is actually a priority” Many times the draw of owning our own business is having control of our schedule. However, when you’re running your own business there tends to be less separation between work life and personal life. With added flexibility comes added responsibility. Naturally, in some ways, business life blends with family life. Juggling successfully begins with practising self-compassion. Managing all of the tasks day-to-day can be overwhelming for even the most successful business owner. Doing this effectively also means recognizing the things you’d like to keep in your life, and then recognizing when there are things that you need to let go. At times this means making a list of all of our tasks and cutting them in half. Other times, we have to accept the season of busyness, allow ourselves to juggle, and accept that there may be balls that are dropped.   “What we have to understand is that we are each individually unique. So what our needs are, what our capacity is, what we're capable of is going to be a hundred percent different from every single other person on the planet… that's why you have to stop comparing yourself.” As a woman entrepreneur, you are not alone in the juggle! Find a mentor, join a women’s group, or find other individuals who can give you a fresh set of eyes in prioritizing. Being transparent in our struggle is the best way to join together and navigate the neverending to-do list. The goal isn’t to complete all of our tasks, but to find balance and fulfilment in our lives as entrepreneurs! “it's not about checking off a to-do list. It's not about getting everything done. “Money is neutral, but how we view it determines its power.” This week on Women in the Business Arena, Sonya and Laura discuss the topic of money, women and business. They had so much to talk about, this is part one of a two-part series. As women, we often struggle to talk about money. Too many women avoid looking at, working with it and getting intimate with their money matters. This really affects our ability to have a thriving business. Too many times, money holds an inordinate amount of power over us. This is because of how we view it. When we look at money neutrally, as a source of energy and a means of exchange, we can begin to relate to it in a more empowered manner. “As women, we have been conditioned to provide so much free labor, both emotionally and physically. We have been conditioned to give it with no expectation to receive it equally or even more abundantly.” Our perception of money often begins at a very young age. We model the money mindsets of parents and other influential individuals from our childhood. This can give confidence to attain wealth easily, or instill fear that drives a scarcity mentality. This mindset pattern is typically deeply ingrained, and can be difficult to shift. Without addressing those patterns directly, we will continue to be affected by them throughout our lives, even if it is at a subconscious level. As women, we are typically accustomed to giving, without monetary gain. We give because we are “good moms” or “good friends” and see it as our role in our family or community. As we work to grow our businesses, we can end up sabotaging ourselves because of our mindset around money. The solution to this challenge is to reconcile our way of “being” with money. “When we can feel money, when we can understand it, when we have a good relationship with it, then we can have good money goals and a realistic connection to what we can create.” Too much of our aversion to money comes from comparing our own business to others’. The truth is, we rarely have the full context to measure the success of someone else’s business. A million dollar business could be paying out nearly all they are bringing in. As we redirect our focus, and reform our relationship with money, we can find healthy connection, and a new standard of measuring success. If we can learn to see money as an energy source, and be connected to it in a healthy way, we will become more realistic in our goals, and carry authority. It’s time to shake off others’ definitions of money and success, and discover your own. The metrics of our business carry value. They offer us a roadmap to guide us in making good decisions for our business. “Every single person has a different set of circumstances… Every time we try to chase after someone else’s goals we’re letting ourselves down.” Some Topics we talk about in this episode: Introduction - 0:54 Definitions Around Money - 3:46 Shifting Relationship with Money - 8:30 Marking Success in Business - 17:50 Our Personal Relationship with Money - 26:36 The Need to Navigate Money with Partners/Relationships - 33:56 Where to Begin - 41:00 Wrap-up and Takeaways - 44:38 How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion starting next week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/womeninthebusinessarena Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business! “Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.” In this episode of Women in the Business Arena, Sonya and Laura discuss some strategies and perspectives on how to operate your business day-to-day. Many people see running a business as a “sexy” alternative to working in a 9 to 5. There is excitement about the freedom and a focus on the more glamorous side of running a business, but they fail to realise the reality around running a business. The operational side of running your business is the most important part. Many business owners have an illusion that one day they can make passive income or delegate the operations of their business to someone else, but this rarely happens. Operations is a part of your life as an entrepreneur, and instead of trying to pass it off, Sonya explains why it is important to learn to love it. She uses the Zen metaphor of “chopping wood and carrying water” to illustrate a more effective way to operate your business.  Whether you are at the beginning stages of entrepreneurship or have a thriving and mature business, there will always be some aspect of operations. Women often have a perception that they are not “successful” because they are working hard. It is based on the belief that when you get to a high level of success, business becomes easy. Sonya is an advocate for a simplified and streamlined business, but there will always be some hard work involved in getting to success. “Until you’re really stabilized in your business… you shouldn’t be delegating to anyone. You should be working to master the basics.” Wherever we are in our journey, it is crucial to master the basic skills of operating a business. Before delegating less desirable tasks to a team of employees, you have to first own the skills that you will teach them. Building a team, before first mastering the basic skills, will not foster a sustainable business model. While Sonya is a proponent of playing to your strengths, basic business skills transcend the need to, “own your genius.” These include connecting with your target market, developing services and skills that are really needed, and becoming more efficient and confident at sales. Even if you don’t consider yourself a salesperson, it is crucial to recognize the pain point in your target market, and develop an attractive way to present your unique solution. “Business owners who are successful know and sell their services better than anyone, because they know the value and believe in their product or service.” Our perception of success gets skewed when we wait for the “sexiness” of our business to present itself. Sometimes we can become stuck on this idea of getting past the operations phase and into the easy phase. This mindset can lead to burnout. As we continue to move our business forward, it is important to recognize the achievements of the present, and celebrate how far we have already come. As we stay in the present, it is important to have a realistic view of our business. Many times we compare our business to the status of other businesses that are several steps ahead of our own. We have to stay “in sequence,” moving forward at a sustainable pace to create a foundation for lasting growth and success. “You absolutely get more choice. That’s the freedom and flexibility you have when running your business… But it’s still work… and that doesn’t end. It’s important to become aware of that so we stop sabotaging ourselves and going after something unrealistic, and enjoy the process of running our business.” Some Topics we talk about in this episode: Introduction - 1:02 The Reality Successful in Business - 3:45 Mastering the Basics and Delegation - 11:20 Enjoying the Process of Developing Your Business - 18:29 The Three Causes of Burnout - 22:50 Having a Realistic Mindset About Your Business - 24:22 Wrap-up and Takeaways - 30:39 How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion starting next week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/womeninthebusinessarena Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business! “We can’t dissect our home life from our work life. They need to flow together. We need to look at the whole framework of our lives before we design our goals.” In this episode of Women in the Business Arena, Sonya and Laura discuss how to have a more wholistic mindset in business. So often, we place an expectation on ourselves to compartmentalize our work life from our home life. Then, we become frustrated when our obligations overlap, and we feel we fall short of business goals. The truth is, that it is not sustainable to streamline one aspect of our lives, at the cost of all others. This frame of mind will eventually lead to exhaustion, burnout, and all areas of our lives will be affected. “Sometimes putting family first IS the next step to your business goal… By taking care of what you need to take care of in self or family...you’re going to have so much more free attention, effort and impact in creating your business goals.” The truth is, shifting into a more wholistic way of thinking about business and personal life will actually lead to more fulfilment of goals in all areas. At times, it is necessary to redefine what our goals are, as we integrate personal and work life. We possess a finite amount of attention in each day. Allowing ourselves permission to give our full attention to what is in front of us is less exhausting than being riddled with guilt about all of the things we “should” be doing to move our business forward. Focusing on the things that really matter to you will always become a stepping stone towards furthering your business goals. “There is no one ‘right’ business model. It’s about simplifying. Women are spending too much time on things that don’t provide any impact for their business.” Creating a more wholistic mindset in the business arena starts with shifting our own mindsets. The greatest distraction to the achievement of our goals comes when we compare our lives with those around us. Comparison will halt personal success. The pressure we place on ourselves to accomplish work goals will invade all areas of our life. It is our responsibility to alleviate that pressure, so we can be focused on the present moment, instead of stretched so thin that no area of our lives receives the benefit. As you work to see your life in a more wholistic way, come up with a few “main things” that can become your focus and purpose for the week. Allow yourself to give your full attention to those main things. You may find that you are able to accomplish even more than you could have expected when you silence your inner critic, extend grace, and allow all parts of your life to integrate. “Sometimes we take the professional label and try to be perfect. We try to hide our emotions, feelings, imperfections… where we’re struggling… This is a misunderstanding of what professionalism is.” In this episode of Women in the Business Arena, Sonya and Laura explore the balance of professionalism and authenticity. So often, we let fear of losing credibility, oversharing, or the pressure of perfectionism determine how authentic we are with clients and coworkers. This is one side of the coin. On the other, while it is valuable to be authentic with who we are regardless of the situation, it is still crucial to recognize the responsibility we have to discern how much is appropriate to share in each context. We can be authentic, without burdening those around us.   “If you have a ‘good fit’ target market, they’re going to resonate with who you are. As long as you are responsible with yourself, being transparent about your lifestyle and your balance will resonate with your market.” A good rule to follow is to make sure you have processed a life situation, before using it with a client. You also have to determine your personal motivation in telling any story. With clients, personal information should only be given for the benefit of the client in mind. It is important to recognize that there will always be those who judge you, regarding your professionalism. Our society is quick to be critical of those around us. However, we have the responsibility to shift the paradigm. Be confident in your imperfections, and be authentic in the way you relate to coworkers and clients. As you lead the way, others will follow. “When you are fully confident in your choices when you recognize that you get to define what is professional for you, you stop caring what other people think.” It can be very difficult to avoid dual relationships, especially when working within a smaller community. Dual relationships can be damaging in both the professional and personal context. It is not impossible to navigate a dual relationship of a friendship and a business partnership. Sonya and Laura share their personal experience, and give insights they gained through their own partnership. “Self-awareness leads to self-responsibility.” Some Topics we talk about in this episode: Introduction - 0:56 Being Professionally Responsible vs. Being Authentic - 5:38 Mindful Vulnerability - 19:40 Transparency Will Bring Judgement - 25:12 Professionalism and “Masks” - 31:12 Navigating Professionalism in Dual Relationships - 38:12 Wrap-up and Takeaways - 48:45 How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion starting next week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/womeninthebusinessarena Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business! “Any time we are standing in our truth, it is inevitable that we are going to make someone unhappy. It’s imperative, but it is hard.” In this week’s episode of Women in the Business Arena, we are discussing the ins and outs of people-pleasing, and how it affects women in business. Many times we confuse etiquette or kindness for people-pleasing. Because politeness is often rewarded, we can forget how to adequately express ourselves without feeling apologetic for expressing and owning our own needs. The difference between kindness and people-pleasing can be found in the motivation behind the action. Most often, people-pleasing is done to avoid conflict, rejection, or guilt. “There’s not a way to truly avoid negative response or rejection. The cost of not being in alignment with yourself is so much greater... Rejecting yourself has such a high cost.” It can be uncomfortable to be polarizing in your language, and clearly stand for your opinions and passions. However, when we put people-pleasing as the priority, our message becomes watered down. Having clearly stated beliefs and opinions will attract others that resonate with you. Changing aspects of your business in an effort to please your clients denies your alignment, integrity, and your leadership. “It is a rite of passage to empowerment to own all of the ways you have denied and mistrusted yourself.” In this episode, Sonya and Laura give an extensive list of the ways that people-pleasing is probably affecting your business. Take a moment to do a self-inventory of your own business. Chances are there are at least a couple of these that will resonate with you. The more you begin to own your needs, the more you will find yourself in conflict. However, as we choose to overcome the fear of being rejected, we will be able to see conflict as an opportunity for deeper connection. Learning how to successfully repair disconnection can lead to a more fulfilled business, and deeper relationships both in life and in business. “Our emotions are our superpower” There’s a common misconception that emotions should stay out of the business arena. As women, emotions are one of our most powerful tools, especially when they help us communicate truth, not only to those we love but also in the business arena.   “Our emotions actually connect us. They connect us to ourselves, they connect us to the earth, they connect us to each other. They connect us to something much much bigger than ourselves.”   In this episode, we dive deep into emotions and how to use them effectively in the business arena. When the world is dominated by masculine ideas and beliefs that emotions are wrong or inherently bad, how do we learn to embrace our emotions to really express the best of who we are?   “If women aren’t learning to come back into their emotional being, then they are not stepping fully into the space of business that we could all inhabit more authentically.”   Just like any other force or energy that moves through something, emotions need to be felt, honoured and released. Suppressing our emotions has a long-term impact, reduces our ability to lead and stops us from living authentically.   “We’re so busy trying to push back and contain emotion that we are cutting ourselves off from our fullest expression and experiences of ourselves.”   When we harness the power of emotion and utilize it correctly it can fuel our success, grow our businesses, and bring about a greater impact than we ever imagined. So many women are in business to make a difference, yet they are cutting off their power and impact by suppressing their emotions. We have to learn to get better at navigating and utilising our emotions for greater influence, reach and impact.   “When we deny our emotions in business, we are lessening our impact”   Some topics we talk about in this episode:   Introduction - 1:50 Different Perceptions of Emotions in Business - 3:15 The Disorientation of Emotions in the Business Arena - 9:18 The Myth of “Emotional Intelligence” - 12:05 Learning to Appreciate your Emotions - 18:30 The Risk of Becoming Emotionally Reactive - 24:02 Internal vs External Emotion - 26:25 The Shaming of Emotions in the Business Arena - 29:03 Using Emotions in Business - 36:58 Managing Emotions to Support Work/Life Balance - 40:10   How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion starting next week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/womeninthebusinessarena Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business! Welcome to episode 50 of the “Women in the Business Arena Podcast,” formerly known as, “The Liberation Lab.” We’re really excited to take a step into expanding the podcast and integrating it into the business even more. One of the reasons for this new approach to the show is to bring everything under one roof. We talk a lot about:   “Streamlining your business, so that you can really focus on ONE thing.”   This is really bringing everything together. Simplicity is key - our flagship coaching program “Women in the Arena” ties right in with our topics and conversations on the podcast, so we decided to simplify and integrate as much as possible to save time and energy AND make a larger impact.   “We are all about simplifying.”   In today’s episode, we’ll be diving into the ideas of simplifying by using some real world examples of how we’re structuring our businesses as well as some deep conversation with some actionable takeaways for you, our valued listener!   “When you enter the arena, you need the skills, the tools, and the preparation to succeed.”   Let’s face it, the Business Arena is NOISY. There are so many people telling us how to think, act, and be that it’s hard to distinguish what is truth and what is just noise. We have to be clear on what we want and seek out the truth that will lead us to success, not only in the business arena, but in our lives, relationships, and for our future self.   “You need to be armed with the truth before you can walk into the arena and succeed.”   It’s important to take a step back and evaluate what we really want. “We have to stop playing the game and start shifting our language.”   We’ve talked before about how to look at business through a feminine lens or a masculine lens.   In this week’s episode, we're talking about language. A lot of the language you hear in business is from more of the masculine framework - things like, "killing it", “hustle", "work hard - play hard", or "the grind.” So, the question is, do we need to change the language to be more authentic in the way we operate our businesses as women?   “Language does perpetuate culture. We can keep perpetuating culture that’s already in existence, or we can create a new culture.”   Language can either build up our culture or tear it down.   Sometimes, we underestimate the power of our language. We can either use it to be inclusive or exclusive. It ultimately determines the way that people perceive us, and can have a massive impact on the influence we have.   “We need to redefine what success and getting to our goals means.”   We also have an exciting announcement!   Next week, on our 50th episode, we’re going to be giving the Liberation Lab a whole new look and feel. The Liberation Lab is changing its name to Women in the Business Arena. We’re starting a FB group to continue our amazing discussions and we’re going to be offering some trainings and takeaways.   Some topics we talk about in this episode:   Introduction - 1:27 Male Perspective in Business - 5:10 The Power of Language - Inclusive vs Exclusive: 8:20 Calling people “in” instead of calling them out - 13:30 The Meaning and connotation of language - 15:45 The Balance of “Do” and “Be” - 20:12 The Broken system of the “side hustle” - 27:05 What do I really want? - The Success Treadmill 31:15 Getting caught up in the hustle - 36:45 Redefining success - 38:20   How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion - http://tinyurl.com/y7gk44w4 Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business -   And if you liked this episode, be sure to subscribe and leave a quick review on iTunes. Here is why a business Facebook page is so important. Not to be techie, but Facebook is basically a closed system that is not indexed by Google. Facebook Business pages ARE indexed by Google, though. This just basically means that people can find your Facebook business timeline in Google!   It’s publicly searchable and you get “google juice” based on the content you have created. An active page on Facebook will translate to rankings on Google.   Someone doing some specific keyword searching on Google could land on your page. This is especially true with events!   You have 3 opportunities to connect with people - your friends, your followers and your business page followers.   Here are some things we know about the Business Arena for Facebook:   It’s a Pay to Play environment.   It takes WORK to grow a successful Facebook page. And, I mean WORK. Every day. I’m going to be honest here - that is why I put SO much more time and energy into my blog and building my list. I own it and I control what happens with it.    Every time I send an email to my list, I know that I have the CHANCE that everyone on that list will open it. Not everyone will, that’s the reality. But, at least they can.    With Facebook, they make it very clear that they will NOT be showing my content to everyone unless I pay for it, and even then, I am competing with all of their friends, and other content.   Here is what happens when you make a status update on your business page. Facebook chooses a small segment of your fans to show it to first, and there is a small window of opportunity for it to organically get more reach. In that small time frame, if there is no engagement, Facebook kills it. If there is some engagement, they open it to a wider audience, but still small when it’s organic. And, great engagement gets a little more.   You need to take time to identify your Target Audience for your Facebook page - what are they looking for a solution to?   You want to define that solution and then develop a content strategy around that, and be consistent.   Outside ways to promote your Facebook Page -   Networking offline   Periscope    Instagram   Twitter   YouTube and other Social Media Platforms   And, check out my Facebook For Direct Sales Profits book -   http://JackieUlmer.com/fbforbiz Try this simple Facebook Plan for Success and watch what happens!     I LOVE and appreciate reviews!   Go to JackieUlmer.com/itunes or JackieUlmer.com/stitcher to leave your review and be entered into a drawing for a free month of coaching.   Show notes http://JackieUlmer.com/239   I really do want to hear from you.
