Last fall, the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco put out an open call for artists to apply for the California Jewish Open. Some of the artists that were accepted into the show identified themselves openly in the application as anti-Zionist, and submitted work that contained content that straightforwardly advocated for Palestinian liberation. But in April, seven of the artists withdrew from the show. A statement released by a group calling themselves California Artists for Palestine cited an “inability to meet artists' demands, including transparency around funding and a commitment to BDS [Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions].” The artists demanded to be able to have final say on wall text about the works, and to be able to pull or alter their works at any time. They were also concerned about potential “curatorial both-sidesism,” referring to an email they received on March 22nd which asked artists to sign off on the fact that their work would be “presented in proximity to artwork(s) by other Jewish artists which may convey views and beliefs that conflict with [their] own.” The museum has decided to leave blank the wall space designated for this work, “to honor the perspective that would have been shared through these works, and to authentically reflect the struggle for dialogue that is illustrated by the artists' decisions to withdraw.”This week, Jewish Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel speaks to two anti-Zionist multidisciplinary artists who made divergent decisions about whether to stay in the group show: Amy Trachtenberg, who opted to remain, and Liat Berdugo, who has pulled out. The trio discuss the perils and possibility of Jewish institutional life—in the art world and beyond—at this moment, the applicability of BDS in this case, and the uses and limitations of “dialogue.”Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).” ARTICLES MENTIONED AND FURTHER READING: “Jewish Anti-Zionist Artists Withdraw From Contemporary Jewish Museum Show,” Matt Stromberg, Hyperallergic“Anti-Zionist Jewish artists pull out of CJM exhibit when demands are not met,” Andrew Esensten, J Weekly“CJM visitors wonder: Does the Palestinian flag belong on the museum's walls?,” Andrew Esensten, J WeeklyPalestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) guidelines“Campus Politics Takes the Stage in The Ally,” On the Nose, Jewish CurrentsJewish Voice for Peace/IfNotNow Passover Campaign“Biting the Hand,” The Editors, e-flux“

The ladies are back this week, and WiFi is still a bit of a struggle. Never fear, poor connection can't get in the way of this duo (okay, maybe it can a little). CJM and Kate go deep on some topics that will have you going "I've been there," like knowing when it's time to get married or get out. Plus, advice about raising teenagers and having upfront conversations. Catch the live show every Sunday at 5 pm EST on @crazyjewishmom Instagram.

Tune in for some great advice about how to get the best price on baby things, having another baby (no, Kate isn't pregnant again, calm down), and insight into Super Jew's first fathers day! Pete Romano (pete@segwik.com) founded Segwick to be something other than just another CRM. In fact, he consultatively helps his clients achieve success by building a solution around THEIR customer's buying process, or customer journey. Pete has staked the claim as being a pioneer in CJM, or customer journey management. This is true value focus, and I wanted to share it with you. Nobody buys a CRM for its features...OK, people who end up having failing CRM initiatives do...People buy CRM to help every one of their sales people walk a customer through a buying process. This was the aspiration of CRMs, but it has largely failed. Pete and Segwick want to change all that. Even if you aren't on the market for a CRM, listen to his focus on customer outcomes. It's powerful stuff. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

CX Goalkeeper - Customer Experience, Business Transformation & Leadership
The CX Goalkeeper had a smart discussion with Annette Franz My learnings discussing about the book “Customer Understanding”, while we went through the three chapters: 1) ListeningStart with the customers and design / develop products for them. (and don't try to find customers for the products).Starting with “listening” and continuing by capturing all the relevant data and consolidating them: these steps help to really understand the customers. 2) Characterize:Segments are like the continents on our planet. They are too high level to design experiences.A “Buyer Persona” is also too high level for customer journey mapping. It shows preferences, what customer buys and how he/she buys. The details required for a Persona to map journey are e.g., needs, pain points, JTBD, …… it makes companies one steps closer to being able to personalize experiences. 3) Empathize:It is important to understand the experience customers have today and redesign it (how it will be tomorrow)You can't transform something you don't understand therefore, you need the “as-is” situation first.“Current state”, “service blueprint” and “future state” are the three most important steps in the CJM process. With the AS-IS situation you can perform tactical fixes. Indeed, it takes time to implement the desired “future state” and customers are maybe already gone.Fixing what is happening inside a company (using the service blueprint) is important to empower employees to deliver the desired experiences. The experiences are human and emotional, technology helps to facilitate the experiences. If you want to be successful you should appeal to both sides of CEO brain. The analytical side with the ROI and emotional side by making them feel the experiences and bringing stories to them. Additionally, make them understand what legacy they want to leave to the organization. How they want to be remembered… Her book suggestion:The Customer Comes Second: Put Your People First and Watch 'Em Kick Butt; Hal F. Rosenbluth Annette's golden nuggets:Culture is the foundation of everything, and it starts from the CEO.Take care of your employees and they will take care of your customers (and at the end of your business) How to contact Annette:http://www.cx-journey.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/annette-franz/Customer Understanding on Amazon Thank you, Annette! #customerexperience #leadership #customerunderstanding #cxgoalkeeper
What is a ‘gang'? Whilst the disciplines of Criminology and Sociology have long grappled with this question, the answer is increasingly of no relevance to criminal justice policies that claim to address the problem of violent crime across England and Wales. Within the context of contemporary policing and law enforcement, the ‘gang' has evolved as a ‘transcendental signifier' (Alexander 2008) and today serves to legitimise intrusive and harmful policing practices as part of a gang-industry (Williams 2014). Of particular concern to this session, a cursory glance at police gang databases reveals that those who are ‘suspected' by the police as ‘gang members', associated to gangs or are ‘at risk' of gang violence are from minoritised groups and particular black young men. In this session, we explore the factors which have given rise to the racialised construction of the ‘gang' and consider the harms experienced and endured by those who are policed with suspicion. Reading Alexander, Claire. (2008). (Re)thinking 'Gangs'. Runnymede Perspectives. Amnesty International (2018) Trapped in the Matrix. London: Amnesty. Secrecy, stigma, and bias in the Met's Gangs Database Bridges, Lee (2015) The Met Gangs Matrix - Institutional Racism in Action. Institute for Race Relations. Muncie, John. The Theory and Politics of Criminalisation. CJM 74. Williams, Patrick. (2014) Criminalising the Other: challenging the race-gang nexus. Race & Class, 56(3), 18-35. (2018)The War on Gangs or a Racialised War on Working Class Black Youth. London: The Monitoring Group. StopWatch. Information Commissioners Office (2018) ICO finds Metropolitan Police Service's Gangs Matrix breached data protection laws. Questions for discussion Consider the multiple ways in which the gang label is (mis)used in contemporary policing and law enforcement practice. With reference to processes of criminalisation reflect upon the State's response to particular forms of music - how may this relate to the mediated construct of the gang. Given it is not a criminal offence to be in a gang, why do you think so much government resource and media attention has been given to this construct?
Kate and Crazy Jewish Mom are back this week with some truly stellar content! First, Kate's vagina comes into question (but what else is new). Don't worry, it's doing great!
