Good Beer Hunting

In recent years, there's a good chance you've read, heard, or watched news about the incredible rise of non-alcoholic brands. A company like Athletic Brewing—one of the fastest-growing breweries in the country—or non-alc wine appearing in the latest TV revival of Sex and the City. There are examples galore, but the truth is that even as these sub-segments of non-alcoholic options grow rapidly, they remain a literal fraction of today's alcohol market. And the opposite, high-end ABV side of things is also showing lots of strength. In this episode, we talk with Colleen Quinn, CEO at America's first brewery to exclusively focus on beer and seltzer at 8% ABV and up, Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company. Based on a recent analysis for Good Beer Hunting's Sightlines+ subscriber news section, we found that somewhere between 8-10% of craft beer sold in retail carries an ABV around 8% and up, a share that has basically tripled from five years ago and continues to grow. If we have products offering something for non-alcoholic occasions, Greater Good is working to position itself at the other end of the spectrum as the brewery people turn to for big, bold flavors in beer. Colleen's beer industry experience that led her to the Massachusetts-based company started with Craft Brew Alliance—a consortium of beer companies from across the country—before a short stint with Anheuser-Busch after the company bought Craft brew Alliance in 2020. After running her own consulting firm, Colleen is now at the reins of Greater Good, which grew its production by +66% between 2019-2021. Simply put, this brewery is positioned to capitalize on an established trend in a unique way and has lots of room to run. What does that mean for how the company accomplishes a goal of being the leading producer of big beer in the U.S.? That's for Colleen to explore and us to learn.

Green Beauty Conversations by Formula Botanica | Organic & Natural Skincare | Cosmetic Formulation | Indie Beauty Business

So what's new in the world of CBD or cannabidiol skincare? Quite a lot it seems. Cannabidiol cosmetics are now mainstreaming as major supermarket and drugstore shelves testify. You can find CBD cosmetics ranging from skincare to haircare as well as, more surprisingly, in cosmetics like makeup - even mascara. With CBD in cosmetics commonplace - though still illegal as well as highly regulated in some parts of the world - we wondered whether brands' and consumers' fascination with cannabinoids is likely to fade. Is the beauty industry milking the CBD trend as a cash-cow while it lasts? Has it gone too far by including cannabinoids in formulations where it makes no sense? And just how can indie beauty brands use CBD in their formulations and gain a share of what is now a very crowded CBD skincare marketplace? To answer these questions and more, podcast host, chartered environmentalist, biologist and Formula Botanica CEO Lorraine Dallmeier turned to Colleen Quinn, who is an award-winning, celebrated clinical aromatherapist, cosmetic chemist and researcher specialising in cannabis research, formulations and education. With a book on CBD skincare publishing as we go on air, Colleen is certainly the go-to industry expert to help unpack the truths from the myths and make sense of CBD as a highly effective, active cosmetic ingredient. Colleen Quinn, Founder LabAroma and Labcannamist, is committed to delivering functional, therapeutic, plant-based products. Her mission is to inspire and empower people to become a confident plant enthusiasts skilled in curating truly effective therapeutic plant remedies by understanding plant science and backed with evidence.

Hudson's primary work is focused on reducing the belief in and reliance on "Silver Bullet" theories in cannabis medicine and therapies. Hudson has spent the last 3 years working with top researchers on the world's largest resource on terpenes and flavonoids; a textbook titled "The Big Book of Terps," along with Hudson's new TV show, "Terp Talk." Information about this book and the related TV show can be found on Hudson's website, http://thebigbookofterps.com/. This significant work includes information not previously known to the cannabis industry, as well as several discoveries not previously reported in scientific literature. Written by cannabis researcher and consultant Russ Hudson, with Sharon Lund, PhD (Nutritional Epidemiologist), and Gloria Fuentes, PhD (Molecular Biologist), The Big Book of Terps required more than 3 years of intensive research to compile and dissect and features commentary by top cannabinoid and terpene researchers including Mitch Earleywine, Ethan Russo, Colleen Quinn, and many others. This week’s guest is my girl Ava Moreno. Ava is a yoga and fitness instructor, co-host of the podcast “Better is Better” and a meditation instructor and sound healer.  She is truly a movement and wellness artist.   Ava Moreno entered the yoga and fitness community through her first love: dance.  She began her dance training as a toddler, training in all forms of dance.  At 16 years old Ava found herself struggling with a severe eating disorder at the start of her professional dance career.  It was then that Ava found Colleen Quinn, an incredible mentor and inspiration to her who supported her recovery through the form of a personal trainer and physical therapist.  Although Ava had first been introduced to yoga at age 11 through dance, it was not until she entered recovery from her eating disorder that she began practicing regularly, discovering the peace, focus, and stability--both physically and mentally--it brought her.   Throughout the recovery of Ava’s eating disorder and several dance injuries, she passionately studied nutrition and began to explore the world of yoga, fitness, under the holistic scope of wellness and has since become an outstanding contributor to it.  I love this talk with my girl so much. I admit I have a strong attraction to individuals who love to hang in the deep end of life and what I mean by that is those who are curious to keep learning and growing in life-- those who love to wonder with the primary intention being expansion and elevation.  Ava is one of those bright stars who brings light to all who come across her and can hang in the deep end of conversations that lead to thought-provoking and inspiring ideas and understandings of Life.  Expansion and Elevation are just some of the feel-good magic you can expect from this beautiful conversation with my beautiful girl Ava.  If you enjoy this talk, let us know your thoughts on it by screen grabbing this EP and sharing it on your IG stories with tags to Ava and myself.  Enjoy!
