Hi #SmartCommunity friends! Welcome to the Summer Series here on the Smart Community Podcast. As you know, we're taking a little break from new content over the Australian summer holidays, and instead we are sharing the replays of a few of our all time favourite episodes. This week we're sharing my interview with Samuel Austin from Episode 340, which was published in May 2023. Sam is an Urban Planner, Community Engagement Specialist and Placemaker, and also the NSW Young Planner of the Year 2022. In this episode, Sam tells us about his background in urban city planning, and his interest and passion for the relationship between people and place. We talk about the role data plays in planning and analysis of how people are using spaces, and Sam tells us about his work on the neon grid and nighttime economy strategy for Sydney. Sam and I discuss the importance of breaking down barriers and silos within cities and communities to foster an integrated approach for a seamless experience for customers, as well as what the nightime economy and neon grid looks like in semi urban and regional or rural settings. Sam tells us about community engagement projects he's worked on in Sydney and we finish our chat discussing the emerging trend of live data allowing for appropriate and timely responses to community requirements. Jake LaMore is out and Bill Yohnka is in as your guest host for this thunderous edition of Kankakee Podcast! For several years now, Yonka has been the announcer for the races that take place every Friday night during the summertime at the Kankakee County Speedway. If you follow Bill on social media, you know just how passionate he is about those races. With Yonka in the driver's seat, he guides us through the history of the speedway with flagman Jim Whittington. Then, the speedway's current promoter, Billy Knippenberg, hops in the passenger seat and tells us how races almost came to a complete stop at the Kankakee County Fairgrounds in 2021. Strap in because this ride goes fast and could get a little bumpy! About Kankakee County SpeedwayThe Kankakee County Speedway has endured multiple name changes over the decades, and believe it or not, its location has changed as well. From its birth in 1940's, with no champions on record, racing was held at the old fairgrounds at Horse's Old Fair Park, on North Indiana Ave. by the Schuyler quarry next to Bradley. Prior to that, racing was contested throughout Kankakee County as early as the 1900's.Racing was held at the current Kankakee Fairgrounds Speedway from 1949-1959 on the half-mile. However, at the conclusion of the 1959 season, the track closed due to a driver's strike for one year only to resume racing in the Kankakee area at Sugar Island Speedway in the early '60's. Racing continued at the Sugar Island Speedway from 1961-1966, before moving back to the current fairgrounds site as Kankakee Speedway from 1967-1984 under Wayne Etzel and company. Then from 1985-1987 it returned to Kankakee Fairgrounds Speedway under Glenn Moren, and from 1988-1999 it returned back to Kankakee Speedway under the Izzo Family. From 2000-2004, the O'Connor Family promoted the Kankakee Motor Speedway, before the Osterhoff Family took over in 2005 when it was known as Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway. Sherri Heckenast & Family took the reigns in 2006-2007 and returned it back to Kankakee Motor Speedway. Tom Smith promoted the facility from 2009 to 2021, Billy Knippenberg Jr. took over the reigns in 2022.Meet Your Guest HostBill Yohnka, who many have dubbed “Mr. Kankakee,” currently serves as the Executive Director of the Kankakee Riverfront Society. In this episode of Leadership Level Up, Bill Yohnka sits down with Jeff and Brian to discuss his leadership approach and reflect on the lessons his mentors have taught him.Bill Yohnka has worn many hats in the Kankakee community, but a leadership style that focuses on empowering people to maximize their potential exists as the through line that connects all of his roles. Yohnka points to Martin Whalen and Theodis Pace as two key mentors who helped mold this approach. The former marketing director at Martin Whalen Office Solutions, Bill remembers that Whalen emphasized ‘finding the right place for [employees] on the bus.' Meaning that Whalen valued crafting out ideal roles for each individual he employed. Similarly, Theodis Pace helped Yohnka see the importance of cultivating relationships - admiring Pace's ability to have relationships with individuals who may have disagreements with people Pace counts as friends.Combining these, and other, lessons, Yohnka describes a people-oriented leadership style that seeks to foster teamwork and community. By deemphasizing ego and pride, Yohnka is able to help put people in roles where they succeed.Listen to this episode of Leadership Level Up to hear more about Yohnka's people first leadership approach, as well as learn how Yohnka first cultivated the relationships with his mentors that went on to be so impactful.Be sure to subscribe to Leadership Level Up so you don't miss future conversations with great leaders!MEET YOUR GUESTBill Yohnka, who many have dubbed “Mr. Kankakee,” currently serves as the Executive Director of the Kankakee Riverfront Society. Residing at the intersection of leadership and mindfulness, Shawn creates sacred spaces for stillness and self-inquiry to help changemakers align their strengths, intention, and impact. Reckoning with his own contemplation of burnout, purpose, and alignment from a career in higher education and student affairs for over 10 years, Shawn transitioned out of his role as Associate Dean of Student Life & Leadership at Morehouse College in the fall of 2021 to focus more on mindfulness and stillness-based training programs and workshops. He is a Buddhist Dharma practitioner, whose impact filters through the practices of meditation, sound healing, yoga nidra, restorative yoga (E-RYT® 200, RYT® 500, YACEP®), and Gallup-Certified Strengths coaching, with a blend of over 18 years of personal practice and trainings. In addition to holding community space through classes, he provides training in leadership and strengths-based development, and workshops in mindfulness, meditation and sound healing. He has contributed workshops, practices, and educational opportunities for celebrities like Questlove, and various yoga studios and colleges, Yoga International, Embodied Philosophy, Sounds True One, the Human Rights Campaign, Spotify and Lululemon. He currently serves as the Community Engagement Specialist for Muse®, the neuro-technology, brain health, and meditation company. While being a proud dog dad, a hardcore gamer, and lover of all things anime, Shawn also hosts a podcast called The Mindful Rebel® Podcast that creates a platform to continually explore this unique intersection of leadership and mindfulness. In this episode, Anjali and Shawn discuss: • Shawn's personal journey into Yoga and other mind-body-spiritual transformative practices: From academia to a spaceholder of folks in the justice movement • Finding the connective tissue between academia and Buddhist teachings • Liminality liberatory movements: the need to consciously acknowledge and cultivate spaces • Reimagining “ not knowing” • How systems and institutions of Dominant Culture work against the slowing down • Non-negotiable rituals and processes to cultivate capacity • How we can cultivate spaces that allow for mindful processing/metabolizing change You can connect with Shawn on Instagram at @shawnj_moore and by signing up for his newsletter where he periodically drops new practices for his community.
