This is: Funny Anecdote of Eliezer From His Sister, published by Daniel Birnbaum on April 22, 2024 on LessWrong. This comes from a podcast called 18Forty, of which the main demographic of Orthodox Jews. Eliezer's sister (Hannah) came on and talked about her Sheva Brachos, which is essentially the marriage ceremony in Orthodox Judaism. People here have likely not seen it, and I thought it was quite funny, so here it is: https://18forty.org/podcast/channah-cohen-the-crisis-of-experience/ David Bashevkin: So I want to shift now and I want to talk about something that full disclosure, we recorded this once before and you had major hesitation for obvious reasons. It's very sensitive what we're going to talk about right now, but really for something much broader, not just because it's a sensitive personal subject, but I think your hesitation has to do with what does this have to do with the subject at hand? And I hope that becomes clear, but one of the things that has always absolutely fascinated me about you and really increased my respect for you exponentially, is that you have dedicated much of your life and the folks of your research on relationships and particularly the crisis of experience in how people find and cultivate relationships. And your personal background on this subject to me really provides a lot of contexts of how I see you speaking. I'm mentioning this for two reasons. Your maiden name is? Channah Cohen: Yudkowsky. David Bashevkin: Yudkowsky. And many of our listeners, though not all of our listeners will recognize your last name. Your older brother is world famous. It's fair to say, world famous researcher in artificial intelligence. He runs a blog that I don't know if they're still posting on it was called LessWrong. He wrote like a massive gazillion page fan fiction of Harry Potter. Your brother is Eliezer Yudkowsky. Channah Cohen: Yes. David Bashevkin: You shared with me one really beautiful anecdote about Eliezer that I insist on sharing because it's so sweet. He spoke at your sheva brachos. Channah Cohen: Yes. David Bashevkin: And I would not think it was not think that Eliezer Yudkowsky would be the best sheva brachos speaker, but it was the most lovely thing that he said. What did Eliezer Yudkowsky say at your sheva brachos? Channah Cohen: Yeah, it's a great story because it was mind-blowingly surprising at the time. And it is, I think the only thing that anyone said at a sheva brachos that I actually remember, he got up at the first sheva brachos and he said, when you die after 120 years, you're going to go up to shamayim [this means heaven] and Hakadosh Baruch Hu [this means God]. And again, he used these phrases PART 3 OF 4 ENDS [01:18:04] Channah Cohen: Yeah. Hakadosh Baruch Hu will stand the man and the woman in front of him and he will go through a whole list of all the arguments you ever had together, and he will tell you who was actually right in each one of those arguments. And at the end he'll take a tally, and whoever was right more often wins the marriage. And then everyone kind of chuckled and Ellie said, "And if you don't believe that, then don't act like it's true." David Bashevkin: What a profound… If you don't believe that, then don't act like it's true. Don't spend your entire marriage and relationship hoping that you're going to win the test to win the marriage. What a brilliant Channah Cohen: What a great piece of advice. David Bashevkin: What a brilliant presentation. I never would've guessed that Eliezer Yudkowsky would enter into my sheva brachos wedding lineup, but that is quite beautiful and I can't thank you enough for sharing that. Thanks for listening.

The Swedish painter Hilma af Klint died nearly 80 years ago in relative obscurity, but you might not immediately realize this if you look her up today. Her paintings, large-scale, vivid, symbolic, and abstract masterpieces infused with mysticism and spirituality, seem uncannily contemporary. But that is not the only reason; af Klint is also now a bonafide star, an art-world household name. In the past several years alone there has been an explosion of interest in her work, catalyzed in no small part via her blockbuster 2018 Guggenheim show in New York called “Paintings for the Future.” Af Klint's body of work, which bravely departed from the figurative art that was popular at the turn of the 20th century when she was working, predates the first Western abstract compositions by titans like Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian. It was a staggering revelation, to say the least. But moving beyond the elevator pitch and the catchphrases that have emerged around af Klint as we rush to fit her into an art historical canon that has woefully excluded women, is essential. Up until recently, many of the intricacies of her life, work, ambitions, and friendships, were not well-understood. That is part of the reason why Julia Voss decided to write the first-ever biography on the artist, which came out in English at the end of last year. Voss, a prominent German journalist, art critic, researcher, and curator, spent the better part of a decade learning Swedish and meticulously retracing af Klint's life and her movements in Europe. Voss combed through more than 20,000 notebooks that belonged to af Klint as well as her massive archive, which the artist had left to her nephew. The biography includes several revelations about af Klint's inner life, desires, and activities. We are headed into another two years that is sure to bring increased attention and reflection on the work of Af Klint. Her massive catalog raisonne is due out next month, edited by Swedish curator and art critic Daniel Birnbaum. An exhibition called “Swedish Ecstasy” at BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels opens this week. Next year, for the first time ever, there will be a show dedicated to Kandinsky and af Klint, curated by Birnbaum and Voss. On this week's episode, Voss joins Artnet News European editor Kate Brown to dive into some of the more fascinating and under-considered aspects of the enigmatic and groundbreaking artist.

Neil Koenig, former Senior BBC producer and current ideaXme board advisor and guest interviewer, interviews Daniel Birnbaum, artistic director Acute Art. Chapter headings: 00:00We're here to idea everyone! To fire up your curiosity and connect you with the people and ideas that shape our world. 00:20 Welcome to ideaXme. I'm Neil Koenig. 00:25 For more than 50 years the Serpentine Gallery has shown work by some of the world's most famous contemporary artists. 00:38 This creature is a product of augmented reality. 01:04 A parallel digital version of the show has been launched in Fortnite, a hugely popular video game developed by Epic Games. 01:15 The artistic director of Acute Art and curator of the New Fiction show is Daniel Birnbaum. 38:04 At the centre of the game is a replica of the Serpentine Gallery. 38:57 I think it will be the best attended exhibition ever produced. 39:42 What kind of work is on show in both worlds? 39:52 KAWS, many people know his work. 41:15 On the Acute Art App and you can place those paintings in your living room. 41:26 It is an exhibition that lives in 3 worlds. 51:33 Maybe that hybrid world will be the future of art. 52:45 There will be entirely new kinds of platforms I think. The pandemic has had an impact on most aspects of our lives, and the art world is no exception. With many galleries and museums closed, there's an urgent need for new ways to experience art. Technology might provide some answers, and one enterprise at the forefront of developments is Acute Art, which collaborates with artists on projects involving virtual and augmented reality. Acute Art has already worked with many high-profile artists, including Ai Weiwei, Marina Abramović, Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg, Olafur Eliasson, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Bjarne Melgaard, Jeff Koons and many more. The most recent project that Acute Art has been involved in is NEW FICTION, the first major solo exhibition in London by KAWS (Brian Donnelly b.1974). The show, which opened in January 2022 at the Serpentine gallery in London's Hyde Park, includes new and recent works in physical and augmented reality. A parallel digital version of the exhibition launched simultaneously in Fortnite, the hugely popular video game developed by Epic Games. In addition, an app developed by Acute Art will “offer a bridge between the virtual and the physical worlds”. All the paintings and sculptures in the exhibition, as well as a miniature version of the entire show, will exist as AR works on the app, which can be viewed at home by audiences around the world, and shared on social media. In this interview, producer, journalist and ideaXme board adviser Neil Koenig talks to Acute Art's artistic director, Daniel Birnbaum, about his career in the art world, the creative challenge of curating the NEW FICTION show, and what part technologies such as augmented and virtual reality might play in the future development of art. Before joining Acute Art in January 2019, Daniel Birnbaum was Director of Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Previously, he curated the 1st Moscow Biennale (2005), “Airs de Paris” (with Christine Macel) at the Centre Pompidou (2007), the 2nd Yokohama Triennial (2008), and “Zero” (with Tijs Visser) at Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin (2015). In 2009 he was director of the 53rd Venice Biennale. Daniel Birnbaum co-authored ‘Spacing Philosophy: Lyotard and the Idea of the Exhibition' with Swedish philosopher and professor Sven-Olov Wallenstein published by Sternberg Press in September 2019. The conversation is based on Carsten Höller’s exhibition Reproduction at CC and unfolds themes such as the exhibition as an experiment, the artwork being ‘unsaturated’, and notions of reproduction in a broader context. The German-Belgian artist is renowned for incorporating elements from playgrounds, zoos and amusement parks into his work, often juxtaposing them with scientific investigations and experiments. Carsten Höller has a PhD in biology, and his scientific background is crucial to his artistic practice where his main concerns are the experiment, the body, natural science and human behaviour. His large-scale installations engage and affect us, at times they even experiment with us – in merry-go-rounds, roller coasters, salt baths, strobe light, scents etc. In the exhibition Reproduction at CC, Höller examines the theme of ’reproduction’, adopting an approach which is at once scientific and artistic. Created and produced by Copenhagen Contemporary in collaboration with Astrid Hald.

After graduating from Florida International University with a bachelors in photography, Monica began collaborating with her sister on videos, large-scale installations, performance art, clothing, VJ sets, and fanzines. A video piece at Bas Fischer International that featured 35 local artists passing on "creative energy" to each other gained the attention of critics. Since then, TM Sisters work has been featured in the second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art and at Performa07 in New York. Locust Projects selected the pair from an applicant pool of 72 artists to receive the Hilger Artist Project Award.

Stil

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 4, 2013 54:02
