On June 1st, it will be three years since the initial release of the book "There Plant Eyes: A Personal and Cultural History of Blindness" and its author and friend of the show Dr. M. Leona Godin is back with us, with us three live in studio.  This   week on Outlook, we're catching up with Leona on what she's been up to in that time and more recently, along with Barry as our third co-host, as we three find out some of the latest projects and work Godin is focusing on including storytelling shows like "Sighted People Suck”. We discuss how she navigates a place like New York City where she lives, the responsibilities with having a guide dog at whatever age, and about the internal shame and ranking each other within the blindness community that goes on. Leona shares about her experience with Daniel Kish who is well-known for his lifelong use of echo location, what he's famously recognized for, but how his work as a mobility instructor who knows the lived experience of being blind is much less understood and valued. Also, Godin tells us about what she's currently been reading on the broadening knowledge and awareness of something referred to as sensory studies, her "Scented Stories" performances, and a bit about the accessible tour of the Whitney Museum of American Art, along with the help of AI.  Check out "There Plant Eyes" and more by going to her website: https://drmlgodin.com And if you missed her previous appearance on Outlook where she talks about her book, you can find it here: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/outlook-2021-10-11-there-plant-eyes-an-interview-with/id1527876739?i=1000538623498

It includes the acceleration of Usain Bold's legs (whose fast-twitch muscle fibers can accelerate faster than 99.9% of people), the lungs of British rower Steve Redgrave (whose seven-liter capacity means he can take in a third more oxygen than the average person), the brain of “human calculator” Scott Flansburg (who can add numbers faster than a real calculator), the vision of Veronica Seider (able to distinguish detail from up to a mile away, her sight is 20 times better than the average human), the ears of Daniel Kish (able to navigate his environment by measuring the echo response of clicks made by his tongue), and the voice of Georgia Brown (whose vocal range spans 8 octaves). Well, God is assembling a body greater than that right here – the superhuman body of Christ! A body that has been gifted with such things (as we talked about last week) as: miraculous powers, prophecy, mountain-moving faith, healing power, life-giving mercy, and wisdom from another world. Ethan was born blind. He's now a 10 year-old boy who collects sounds on his 51 dictaphones, composes music, and performs on stage in concerts. Until now he's been home-schooled, but last year he was offered a place at St Mary's Music School in Scotland - one of the best in the country. The problem is he struggles to get around. This is where Batman comes in. His real name is Daniel Kish and like Ethan he's blind. He's a master of echolocation. He makes clicking noises - like a bat - to build a picture of the world around him. Neuroscientists have done experiments on him and found that he's managed to activate the visual part of his brain. He's taught people all over the world to "see through sound" and he's so good at it that he goes hiking, cycling and rock-climbing. "Batman" (Daniel) comes to Scotland to spend 10 days with Ethan, to teach him echolocation and help him prepare for his new school. The documentary follows Ethan's progress as he learns from Daniel Kish. Listeners are introduced to the principles of echolocation, they follow Ethan practicing at home, on the train and at his new school. They're brought into Ethan's world, through music composed specially by Ethan, and they're with him on his birthday, on long walks in the Scottish hills, right through to his experience at school. We follow Ethan up to his final day of term to find out how he's done, and see how he copes with his biggest challenge yet: playing an accordion solo with the orchestra at the school concert. Produced and presented by Helena Merriman.
