We hear from Vermont-based musician Sarah Bell and the band Miles of Fire as they compete to be winners of NPR's annual Tiny Desk Concert. Plus, the Trump administration sues Vermont and three other states over their climate superfund laws, the state gets some good news regarding the safety of its milk supply from bird flu virus, a funding boost should help more low-income Vermonters connect freely to the state's high speed fiber broadband network, Quebec sees near record population growth mostly due to a recent influx of immigrants, and the Notch road between Stowe and Cambridge has been reopened after its annual winter closure.
AI generated voices like Alexa and Siri are now so much a part of our everyday experience that disembodied chatbots that talk are edging ever closer to being accepted as real. And not for the first time: attempts to generate artificial human voices date back over two centuries.

In this episode, I chat with Ian Campbell. You might remember Ian. He was the founder of RiTA, Australia's first real estate AI together with co-founder Dr Sarah Bell and the pair successfully exited the business after its sale to CoreLogic. After a bit of a break, Ian is now founder of the venture studio Bright Young Things. And in this episode, Ian shares his passion for startups and his journey to creating a studio that focuses on early-stage venture development, from ideation to product-market fit. We discuss the importance of research and validation in the startup process, and how AI can be a valuable tool for gathering and analyzing market insights. We then delve into GoList, one of the studio's ventures, which aims to solve the lead conversion problem in real estate. Ian explains why lead generation is not the issue, but rather the industry's archaic methods of managing and converting those leads. He highlights the negative impact this has on brand reputation and service delivery, and how GoList aims to improve efficiency and customer experience.

Hundreds of property management professionals from across the country have weighed in on the pressures and positives of the job at this point in time. On this episode of Secrets of the Top 100 Agents, host Juliet Helmke is joined by Dr Sarah Bell, director of strategic partnerships at MRI, who digs into the firm's latest Voice of the Property Manager survey, now in its third edition, to uncover how professionals are feeling about their jobs. The duo discuss some of the challenges that are evident – such as long hours and heavy work loads – and extrapolate how this is impacting mental health and average tenure in the sector. Sarah compares the data to the larger real estate sector and Australia's working population more generally. They look at the valuable feedback gleaned from the survey that suggests how positive improvements could be made, and assess some of the sector's greatest strengths. Did you like this episode? Her core area of expertise is supporting founders in what's required in customer discovery; so that they don't fall into the trap of ‘build it and they will come'. Do not skip this step. Because you will find yourself having to go back to it before or after you've built software. You may as well do it before you've built software. Just find out about your customer and who they are, what's important to them and what their biggest challenges are. That's the most important thing and also be creative. Look to the edges because most people trying to find a problem they look straight ahead and it is easy to solve when you get to the edges that you find a solution. It's really worth building.

Sarah Bell says data goes beyond numbers — it's a powerful tool for weaving captivating stories that allows agents to take the customer journey to a whole new level. The principal of innovation and industry at CoreLogic, and named Innovator of the Year - Individual and Excellence Award winner at the REB awards for 2023, sits down with Grace Ormsby to share how she leveraged her background as a researcher to find her career stride in the real estate industry. Dr Sarah Bell is one of my professors at Utah Tech. Dr Bell has extensively studied: - Dimensions of women's sexual health and well-being, including sexual desire, sexual pleasure, and orgasm. - The influence of social and sexual norms on women's sexuality and sexual pleasure. - How specific sexual contexts, such as hook ups, influence women's sexual pleasure and sexual health. - Use of mixed-methods designs, both qualitative and quantitative, to study women's sexuality using a phenomenological approach. I ask Dr Bell: How she got started in all of this. We talk about feminism, the waves and how this affects us. We talk about where we're going as feminists We talk about the orgasm gap and female pleasure. What is female orgasmic disorder? What else do we need to know about female pleasure?
Sarah Bell is back, and the only thing puzzling about her return is why it took so long to happen! Why do people like Halloween? What are mirrors? And, Boats? We get into all the major questions of the universe on this one. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feelfeelings/message

Most of us rely on farmers to produce our food and rising costs for farmers are leading to spiralling food prices. It's in part down to huge increases in the cost of fuel and fertiliser, shortages of labour and the pressures of a changing climate. Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women farmers from Australia and the UK about their love for the land, the responsibility of running a family farm and how they deal with the pressure. Katrina Sasse is an Australian cereal farmer and 2017 Nuffield Australia Scholar. She works on her large family farm and has a smaller bit of land herself. She questioned why, when addressing the shortage of farmers, nothing was focused on the capacity of farm daughters to become farmers. As part of her Nuffield research she travelled the world to interview farmers about the structural and cultural issues within agriculture that need to change for the gender gap to close. Sarah Bell manages her family's mixed arable farm in the English Midlands along with her husband and parents. Unusually she's the one who's running the family farm despite having a brother – but he didn't want to go into farming. She also runs a consultancy business to agricultural food industry businesses and other farmers two days a week to supplement the farm income. She jokes there are more men called Mark on boards in the grain trade than there are women. Her key principle is ‘farm profitably and tread lightly'. https://youtu.be/9N3ST2oMVz0 https://www.bellscoaching.com When I work with leaders, I often find they are in leadership roles because they have been high performers in previous jobs. They are self-driven and have the knowledge and skills to get the job done. These talents have led to promotion, but these individuals find themselves frustrated and disillusioned as leaders, unable to effectively direct team performance. If a leader fails to set expectations and boundaries, his or her team has no way of knowing what is acceptable – which leads to a lack of trust and respect on both sides. Being a leader requires a different set of skills. I help these leaders learn how to connect with their teams and build lasting rapport, and I also help businesses uncover and correct leadership gaps, thereby increasing engagement and company success.

Time to explore the wonderful surroundings of Westonbirt, the National Arboretum as RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey joins one of their recent Sensing Nature Guided walks lead by two visually impaired Volunteer guides. The Sensing Nature Guided Walks were also part of 'Westonbirt Unseen', a collaboration between Westonbirt, Andy Shipley of Natural Inclusion, Sarah Bell of Sensing Nature, and the University of Exeter. This initiative is part of the wider ‘Re-Storying Landscapes for Social Inclusion' project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. Through the Sensing Nature Guided Walks Westonbirt's visually impaired guides lead bookers through an immersive and interactive sensory experience that aims to shift their perception, enjoy the arboretum at a slower pace and explore the trees of Westonbirt through their nonvisual senses. Toby's visit to Westonbirt begins with an interview with Mark and Mike the two visually impaired Volunteer Guides to find out why they wanted to get involved with the project and lead sighted people around Westonbirt on The Sensing Nature Guided Walks. Their involvement in the setup of the walks and how much of a collaborative process it was working on the walks with input from everyone involved. Then Mark and Mike went on to explain a bit more about the exercises that participants get involved in on the walks to use their senses apart from their sight to get closer to the trees, smells and sounds that are all around them in Westonbirt. Toby also captured elements of the sensing Nature Guided Walk along with some of the exercises mark and Mike invited bookers to do on the walk such as closing their eyes, feeling the ground through their feet, feeling the wind, listening to the sounds around them along with the smells of the trees, grass and leaves. In another exercise where Mark asked bookers to take a picture and memory of Westonbirt by looking around them and then closing their eyes and putting the images of what they saw into their memory to recall later and one exercise where bookers were invited to take a walk around the low branches of a tree to gage it's height. At the end of the sensing Nature Guided Walk, Toby caught up with Cotty and Nick, two of the sighted bookers, to find out what the walk was like for them, how they found the whole walk and the exercises that Mark and Mike asked them to do. Whether being asked to close their eyes and using their other senses gave them a different and maybe better experience of Westonbirt. Also for Cotty and Nick having just spent over an hour and a half on the walk with Mark and Mike did they feel that they had a better understanding around what life might be like for someone who is blind or partially sighted. The Sensing Nature Guided Walks at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum take place every second and fourth Friday of the month from April to September starting at 2pm and more details can be found by visiting the following website - https://www.forestryengland.uk/westonbirt/sensing-nature-walks (Image shows: A tall dark green Serbian spruce tree in the Arboretum that appears thin and needle-like in comparison to the surrounding trees. In April 2022, levy-paying businesses have an excellent opportunity to voice how we should invest AHDB income to help shape the future of farming. This podcast features views on levy-fund investment – covering the positives and the negatives. Rutland farmer and AHDB Cereals & Oilseeds Sector Chair, Sarah Bell, explains how (after registering online) levy payers can express opinion on the products, tools and services AHDB delivers to industry. Independent agronomist, Patrick Stephenson, discusses how AHDB's information helps him deliver advice to his North Yorkshire clients. Finally, Lincolnshire monitor farmer, Colin Chappell, outlines the financial costs and benefits to his business associated with the levy – including how he feels that knowledge exchange should be at AHDB's heart. Please listen in and encourage levy payers to get involved – the stronger the voice, the better the outcome for industry. To find out more about the process, visit: ahdb.org.uk/shape-the-future

Sarah Bell is a leadership coach who works with nurse managers, nurse leaders and other healthcare leaders who seek leadership development coaching. Owner of Bell's Breakthrough Leadership Coaching, Sarah provides one-on-one and group coaching that teach her clients the skills needed to transition from being outstanding individual contributors to being exceptional nurse leaders. Sarah has been a leadership coach for nurse leaders since 2013. She is an International Coaches Federation Professional Certified Coach and certified by the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching. Sarah is a registered nurse and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and a Master's Degree in Business Administration. Having spent more than 27 years in the medical field, Sarah has held various roles including vice president, regional director, training and education manager, as well as several positions as a patient care nurse. Once faced with many of the same personal and professional challenges that she now helps her clients overcome, Sarah was inspired to become a leadership coach after working with a coach of her own and finding success. Sarah came to the realization that despite having independent career success, having the ability to inspire, empower and lead others to perform at their best requires a different set of skills. Specifically, Sarah understands that many nurses get promoted because of their exceptional patient care, but often lack the official training needed to be successful nurse managers. Sarah works with both individual nurse leaders and healthcare companies to help nurses in three distinct ways. First, Sarah helps her clients understand and embrace their roles as leaders. Second, she teaches clients how to shift themselves and their team from daily workplace drama to focusing on what matters most – quality patient care and key performance indicators. Third, Sarah helps her clients develop a coaching leadership approach to help them connect, engage and empower their teams, which leads to increased manager and employee retention, as well as enhanced engagement. My guest in this episode is Craig Deveson from Properti, and that's Properti spelt with an I, a proptech that turns your CRM into a social media machine, making it easy to create targeted posts for Facebook, Instagram, and other social media. Social media and how to do it is a huge issue for agents. New data from ActivePipe, authored by yours truly, found that 93% of agents believe digital and social media marketing is important to their success, but only 42% feel that their skills are good, and just 4% think that they are excellent. So there is a huge need for tech that simplifies and makes it easy to get results. Now, Craig has a long track record creating technology businesses on Amazon Web Services, AWS. He and I first met a couple of years ago at The PropTech Summit, where he, Sarah Bell, and James Dearsley, and I ended the night propping up the bar and solving all the problems of the proptech universe. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theproptechpodcast/message
The Erin Arts Centre presents a range of cultural events, but with the current difficulties of bringing performers to the Island, we are fortunate to have so many first-class artists here in the Island. International concert pianist Olga Stone and Cleveland Medal winning mezzo-soprano Mandy Griffin are in concert on Friday 4th June. Belle Abbey in Colby takes its name either from an Irishman called Bell or from a Sarah Bell of Douglas, both of whom are said to be former owners of the property. It used to be the venue for an annual fair which involved the ritual funeral procession and burial of a hen. However, this Sunday it hosts the Southern Vintage Engine and Tractor Club Rally. 9th June is the feast day dedicated to Colum Killey, St Columba of the Church. That will be the date of the opening event of a month-long celebration of 1500 years since the birth of Colum Killey. Yn Greinneyder (Manx Language Development Officer to Culture Vannin), Ruth Keggin Gell tells us about Yn Chruinnaght's contribution on that opening evening with an Oie Vingo event, family bingo called in Manx, from 6.00pm at Sunset Lakes in Peel. And we find out the background to the song in Manx written by Doolish y Karagher, Brian Mac Stoyll and Shorys y Creayrie, 'Birlinn Ghorree Chrovan', about the arrival of Godred Crovan in the Isle of Man from Islay, with the tune based on a song in Scottish Gaelic by Duncan Johnston (1881-1947) of Islay, whose song described the arrival of Godred Crovan in Islay from the Isle of Man.
Conscious Lee is a podcast to help people value and protect their rivers. In the second episode, we explore the concept of ‘bluespace’ which describes the health improvements of spending time by water. Building on the first podcast, it shows us how respecting rivers has multiple benefits for people and wildlife. We have contributions from Dr Sarah Bell, lecturer in health geography in the University of Exeter, Denise Cahill Cork Healthy Cities Co-coordinator, and Laura Ní Fhearghail, see links below. It also uses Sustainable Development Goal 15, Life on land, to show the importance of rivers, waterways, wetlands, and lifestyle choices you can make to help address our climate and biodiversity crisis. Conscious Lee is produced by students of Creativity and Change, a course in Munster Technical University’s Crawford College of Art & Design. Colette Mulholland, Ann Lambe, Flo Whitworth, and Richard Scrvien narrated, and the field recordings were made by artist Vicki Langan and Richard. Sarah Bell, LA Hardy, and John Bush drop by Around the Bagg tonight to compete for my friendship on the world's best comedy game show.
The story begins during 1866 when a young Miles Weatherhill, a weaver who lived with his mother and sister on Back Brook Street, Todmorden, fell in love with Sarah Bell, a cook working for the Reverend Anthony John Plow at the local vicarage. A self-educated, well groomed, smart looking man, Miles had also taken on a teaching role for a local Sunday School which was run by the Reverend John Plow – and it would seem at this point in his life he had everything to live for. He had a respected job, was well liked by most of the people he came into contact with and he had fallen in love. And whilst the months between 1866 leading up to November of 1867 would be filled with joy and hope for the future, his world would ultimately come crashing down around him, escalating into violence and with horrific consequences. Sarah Elizabeth Bell had moved from York to work as a cook within the vicarage that was occupied by the Reverend John Plow and his wife, Harriet. Plow had promised her parents that he would look after Sarah, as he would with his own children, so when Miles approached him to ask for permission to court Sarah, Plow told Miles he would speak with his wife Harriet and to seek her thoughts on the matter. Miles was an intelligent man and wanted to do things the proper way and to not go behind the back of Plow by dating Sarah without his blessing, so as you can imagine, Miles was taken aback when, after waiting a day or two for Plow's answer only to be told that he and Harriet had spoken about the matter and decided that it would be best for Sarah never to meet with Miles again. He reasoned that not only was their age an issue – Sarah was just 16 whereas Miles was 21 at the time – but Plow also stated that he didn't want a long courtship within his home. Stunned by this rejection, Miles went away fuming at the prospect of never being able to see Sarah again. Meanwhile, Plow made it clear to Sarah that she had a job to do at the vicarage and that she would not be allowed to meet with Miles ever again.

More than 45% of leads are lost each year in real estate, costing a typical real estate agency $1.2M in lost commission. But big data, AI, content, and automation are dramatically changing how leads are identified in real estate, forcing agents to change how they respond and connect with potential clients. Our November Proptech Panel introduces the disruptors radically changing lead generation in residential real estate, with Sarah Bell, Co-Founder at AIRE, Mona Chebbou, Head of Sales & Marketing at ActivePipe and Zoe Pointon, CEO and Cofounder at OpenAgent This is the sixth in a series of events by the Proptech Association of Australia, sponsored by Stone & Chalk. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theproptechpodcast/message
When a mysterious illness blinded him at age 25, British naval officer James Holman took up a new pursuit: travel. For the next 40 years he roamed the world alone, describing his adventures in a series of popular books. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast, we'll describe Holman's remarkable career and his unique perspective on his experiences. We'll also remember some separating trains and puzzle over an oddly drawn battle plan. Intro: David Tennant's 2008 turn as Hamlet enlisted the skull of composer André Tchaikowsky. For J.B.S. My guest in the second episode of The Proptech Podcast is Sarah Bell, co-founder of AIRE, and mother of Rita, the real estate robot. This is a wide-ranging conversation about how AI is making us more human. We cover not just what AI is in real estate, but how we should be using it and how it's making our lives easier. We also look at how AI builds relationships and shows us how to identify ‘passive' requests for service, plus a very fun section on how holding onto your data is the equivalent of being a crazy newspaper hoarder. The Proptech Podcast explores the area where real estate and technology collide. In each episode we introduce listeners to a proptech innovator who is pushing the boundaries of what's possible and explore the issues and challenges raised by the tech. From wetsuits to ziplines, Bill and Don dry off and head to Saluda, NC which is home to the Green River Gorge and The Gorge Zipline. Sarah Bell, with the Zipline, speaks with the ‘Outdoor Guys’ about the thousands of acres of protected wilderness which allow for incredible views of certified old growth forests and lands from Lake Summit to Lake Adger, Mount Mitchell to Lake Lure. The zipline is deep, fast, and steep, and participants start perched on the rim of the gorge but soon begin their journey of zipping through the trees. Sarah walks listeners through the requirements to participate and what visitors should expect. But don’t worry…the zipline is equipped with an automatic braking system which allows all to enjoy this very fast gravity sport!
Today we’re talking with Aire co-founder and mum of the Rita AI, Sarah Bell. Sarah discusses with us the evolution of Rita, humanisation of machines, our sci-fi future, and the ethics of big data and bias-free AI. More about Sarah: As a co-founder of the PropTech startup Aire, Sarah Bell is a sought after speaker and expert on the strategic application of artificial intelligence and automation in real estate. She helps real estate businesses harness the opportunity within their data and transition to a blended human-digital workforce using Aire's Digital Employee, Rita. With a professional and academic background in research and analysis, Sarah joined the front lines of real estate as an agency owner and practitioner for a decade giving her tactical insights, subject matter expertise and just enough street cred to create solutions that are intelligent by design and Cx obsessed. Sarah is an author, analyst, researcher, project designer, speaker and nerdtrepreneur with research interests and some pieces of paper in strategic planning, change management, planning professional development and strategic application of artificial intelligence with London's Middlesex University, Leeds Trinity University (UK) and recently MIT's Sloan Management and CSAIL Executive Schools. Sarah is also Mum to three human children and a clever little robot named Rita. She has a strong preference for dogs over cats if pushed on the subject. How does Sarah see her role? Does she see herself as an entrepreneur? How did she end up in real estate? How did the AI Rita come about? How did they avoid creating a solution to a problem that didn’t exist? How did their background help with this? What does Rita actually do? What does Rita stand for? How has Rita become humanised among the team? Is this humanization deliberate or does it occur naturally? Tech jargon isn’t relevant to customers. How does the team help customers understand what Rita does? How does this let customers connect to her? Does Sarah have any practical advice for establishing an AI startup? What role does intuition play? Three important questions: How can we connect humans to computers in ways that make them more intelligent? How do we connect humans to each other in ways that are more intelligent? How can we connect people to information in ways that are more intelligent? Is it straightforward to hook into the right skills to take a concept or idea to an actual product? What challenges has Sarah faced on this front? Do some customers see Rita as a potential risk to their jobs? How can humans and machines work collectively with their best skills? Why is Rita built the way she is vs. as a chat bot? How does Sarah feel about chatbots as an interface? Will Rita one day talk directly to customers? What is Sarah’s vision of the future in relation to sci-fi—Star Wars, Star Trek, Jetsons, Terminator, Altered Carbon, etc.? Which sci-fi future are we most closely going to end up in? Aire Homepage

If there s one thing everybody around the world knows about New Orleans, it s that we were the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The other thing they probably know is, we re the birthplace of jazz. The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra was, for a time, one of the most successful and well funded jazz institutions in the city. Today, a new CEO, Sarah Bell, is guiding the orchestra out of the financial crisis it found itself in when its founder, Irvin Mayfield, ran afoul of the law. And one of the most influential voices of the city s recovery from Hurricane Katrina, Garland Robinette, has left radio to continue a career as a visual artist, co owning with his wife, Nancy Rhett, Robinette Studios. Artist and media luminary Garland Robinette, and NOJO CEO Sarah Bell join Peter Ricchiuti on this edition of Out to Lunch. We find out what it s like for Garland to go from being one of the city s most influential voices, to sitting down behind an easel, alone, painting. And find out from Sarah what it s like trying to run an orchestra when people know more about your criminal record than your latest record. Photos at Commander s Palace by Alison Moon.
