This week I spoke to Neada Deters, founder of the organic skincare range LESSE. We met when she still lived in LA a few years ago so we began this conversation discussing her recent move to NYC, which is a return for her. Neada moved to New York the first time from Australia with a one-way ticket over a decade ago, so we talked about how she made that big decision and many more, including starting out her career in music journalism, working at VICE, and eventually pivoting her beat to beauty writing before eventually starting her skincare line. Inspired by watching her grandmother apply her skincare, Neada gave LESSE the tagline, rituals over routines. We covered her own daily rituals as well as how she spends her days, working with her husband, her advice on romantic relationships, keeping in touch with people far away, and her approach to beauty including where the industry is going and what seeing images of ourselves more than ever before does to our self perception, plus much more. This follows a recent talk at KragDag 2022 by Russell Lamberti (economist and executive director at Sakeliga) on the reasons for the deterioration and current economic crisis in Sri Lanka. Prices in Sri Lanka have gone through the roof and several products, including fuel, have been rationed. Poverty and suffering are to be seen everywhere. Lamberti gave several reasons for the crisis in Sri Lanka, including excessive foreign debt, internal instability and large-scale government corruption, a central bank that prints lots of money, and outrageous regulations that were carried to an extreme following the Covid-19 restrictions. These factors are discussed in greater detail. There are important lessons for South Africa to learn from the Sri Lanka case. Lamberti was of the opinion in particular that it is essential to ensure a state-proof civil sector so as to curb reckless government actions such as those seen in Sri Lanka.

In hierdie stuk bied ek 'n bondige oorsig van my bevindings.My tesis gaan oor die volgende vraag: Is herverdelende populisme 'n volhoubare langtermynroete na ekonomiese groei, die vermindering van armoede en ongelykheid, en demokratiese konsolidasie, of bied die beskerming en toepassing van eiendomsregte 'n beter alternatief om hierdie doelwitte te bereik? Om 'n antwoord te kry, het ek vier gevallestudies vergelyk: Venezuela en Zimbabwe, as voorbeelde van herverdelende populistiese regimes waar eiendomsregte wesenlik verminder is; en Uruguay en Botswana, as voorbeelde waar eiendomsregte beskerm en toegepas is.

Dans cette épisode, nous partons pour Alicante, où vit mon cousin John Brisy, pour parler de Libin son village natal.  John ouvre ma mini-série sur Libin qui se poursuivra avec les interviews de son frère et de sa sœur, Dimitri et Pauline. Parce qu’il est possible d’avoir vécu dans la même maison, avec les mêmes parents sans pour autant  partager la même histoire avec son village natal…   Libin est une commune située dans la province de Luxembourg, en ardenne belge, qui rassemble un peu plus de 5000 habitants  Le village est bordé à l’ouest par l’autoroute A4/E411 reliant Arlon et Bruxelles. La commune de Libin est également arrosée par la Lesse, qui coule dans les villages de Ochamps, Anloy, et Villance. Je n’aurais jamais imaginé que mon cousin prendrait cette voie! John et moi avons le même âge et avons tous deux travaillé, étant jeunes, dans l’hôtel familial ce qui nous a lié particulièrement et laissé beaucoup de souvenir. Je me souviens précisément d’une fin de service, on ferme tous les deux autour d’une bière. On a 20 ans. On parle du futur et john m’annonce qu’il partira faire un stage de 6 semaines, à Dublin, à la fin de ses études de Marketing. Il y restera au final 3 ans et commencera à parcourir le monde...
