Doug and Justin dive deep into anime this week, starting with Doug's story of watching the new Demon Slayer movie with his daughter for the first time. That leads into a full breakdown of anime tropes, including a hard look at the My Hero Academia ending and why its final stretch dragged, plus a rundown of some of the funniest and strangest anime titles out there. From there the guys rewatch Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan, which kicks off the main event: a real debate about why live action anime adaptations almost never work. They break down Attack on Titan, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, and the ongoing trend of Hollywood trying to remake beloved anime and Disney classics in live action, and why so much of it gets lost in translation. That spirals into a bigger conversation about fandom culture and why the biggest fans sometimes become a property's worst enemy. Justin also puts Doug in the hot seat for a movie trivia game, naming an actor based only on three of their most popular films. Doug's knowledge surprises even himself. The episode wraps with this week's recommendations, including The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Demon Slayer Infinity Castle Part One, now streaming on Crunchyroll. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
The second note sent after Nancy Guthrie's kidnapping said she died shortly after being taken. Investigators called it a legitimate communication from the actual kidnappers. Not a hoax. Not one of the fakes that the FBI has been arresting people for. If that assessment holds, the people who took an 84-year-old grandmother from her home left behind a written admission that she died in their custody.Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta evaluates the legal significance of that note. Whether it functions as a confession depends on what investigators can connect it to — a device, a location, a fingerprint, a writing pattern. But the content alone tells a story the prosecution could use if the case ever reaches a courtroom. Five months in, nobody has been charged with the kidnapping itself. The FBI continues investigating leads including an anonymous emailer who claims to have video evidence. And the family is still waiting.Tony Brueski and Bob Motta break down the legal reality of where this case stands, what the note changes, and what still has to happen before anyone faces charges. In this episode, we're joined by Crystal—commission artist, fan theorist, and animation enthusiast (Twitter/X: @Shapeshift16)—to explore some of the most compelling fan theories across our favorite series, each offering a new way to interpret the stories beyond what's shown on screen. We kick things off by exploring the theory that Light Yagami from Death Note may not have simply died, but instead became a Shinigami. By breaking down the rules of the Death Note and the symbolism in his final moments, we discuss whether his fate represents punishment, irony, or a continuation of his god complex in a different form. It raises the question of whether the series quietly leaves room for his story to go on.We then shift into the deeper lore of Amphibia, focusing on the Calamity powers and their true nature. Rather than just being tools of heroism, we explore the idea that these powers may be unstable or even dangerous when fully realized. This connects to the broader theory of Amphibia itself acting like a Pandora's box—where accessing powerful forces across worlds can lead to unintended and possibly irreversible consequences.Next, we dive deeper into the connections between The Owl House and Gravity Falls, expanding on the idea of a shared universe. We go beyond surface-level Easter eggs and look at recurring symbols, similar magical rules, and even character parallels that suggest these worlds may operate within the same multiverse. We also discuss how creators leaving subtle clues—whether intentional or not—fuel fan speculation, allowing viewers to build bridges between stories and imagine crossovers that feel surprisingly believable. We wrap up with the intense and emotional theory from My Hero Academia surrounding Dabi's identity, centering on Endeavor as the father at the core of it all. By examining his past actions and relentless pursuit of power, we explore how this theory transforms the Todoroki family storyline into a deeper narrative about generational trauma, accountability, and the lasting impact of one person's choices. In the end, this episode highlights how fan theories are driven by passion, creativity, and attention to detail. No matter how small a moment or clue may seem, fans continue to analyze, interpret, and build their own conclusions. These theories don't just fill in gaps—they expand the experience, proving that storytelling doesn't stop when the episode ends.Want to be a guest on MC Anime Podcast? Well, the boys have committed to Death Note for the long haul, but it's time to commit to a new series as well. There stories are on the ballot: The Emperor and Me, All You Need is Kill, and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Can a cute penguin stand up against the ultraviolence of an alien invasion or a violent social climber?
After meeting Usopp and getting into… a whole lot of discourse, we say goodbye to One Piece (for now?). But we can't quite bring ourselves to quit Death Note yet, especially now that things are getting so… interesting. Aaaaaaand cue Ryuk eating an apple.

Shirleon joins Melvin to discuss 2013's insane surprise financial hit, Now You See Me! Despite being a critical flop the film was a blockbuster blowout earning nearly 5x its budget! But, I do intend to trim this episode down from its original 1:08:02 length, so if you want to hear the UNCUT version, tune in on Patreon here!Shirleon says she'd rather rewatch Death Note (2017) than ever watch Now You See Me again.Melvin, "I just thought the movie was bad."Every character basically sucks. If they don't suck, they're boring.Melvin has an issue with how normies and the working-poor are depicted, and he also feels it takes its audience for granted. It thinks its audience is a bunch of morons.Shirleon is overtaken by how much stuff is stuffed into this film, and the two discuss why that's a serious problem.Melvin talks about Safety Not Guaranteed, a movie that's got similar themes of belief and hope but isn't a total mess.Trying to make sense of the ending.Recommendations:What Moves the Dead by T. In episode 3, we continue our exploration of One Piece and Death Note. We continue to marvel at the surprises and moral complexities of the latter, and we laugh as the former shows us how one man can kick another in the sensitives in new and exciting ways. Also, we try to avoid getting flagged by the DOJ. If there's an episode 4, you'll know we succeeded.
Send us a Question!MOVIE DISCUSSION: Shirleon joins Melvin to discuss Death Note: The Last Name, a sequel to 2006's Japanese live-action adaptation, Death Note, that released 3-months later. The two look at the film as a unit with its predecessor, its successes as a stand-alone sequel, and compare it to the anime (as well as the Western Netflix adaptation).Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 26-minutes discussing "Evil AI is Boring Now - Which is Kind of Scary", a think piece from James Hibberd on The Hollywood Reporter, and wondering what makes AI/AGI movies interesting, or not, in 2025. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)How Death Note: The Last Name truncates the the latter-half of the source material, reordering some things and altering others outright, works pretty well.Shirleon enjoyed seeing the Death Note story unfold in a new, better-handled manner. It helped her better understand what she likes about the overall narrative. If these adaptations are missing anything, it's the monologues.Melvin wonders why a "Set in the world of Death Note" anthology movie or series hasn't been created, and he elevator-pitches five ideas that could be explored.Talking about the recurrent line "Sacrifices are necessary.".Melvin felt the ending satisfied the main thematic beats of its source material. Tune in as Anna (@banananna024/@formergleek) hops back onto the podcast for a discussion on Rope, the 1948 thriller film about a pair of men who dare to see if they can carry out the perfect murder by hosting a dinner party at their apartment—the place where they have their victim's corpse all tucked away. The lost art of homoeroticism, avoiding the spoilery trailer for Project Hail Mary, nitpicking unrealistic depictions of strangulation, and comparing Rope to Frasier and Death Note land as a few of the subjects for this episode.Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Rope stars John Dall, Farley Granger, James Stewart, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Constance Collier, Douglas Dick, Edith Evanson, Joan Chandler, and Dick Hogan.Spoilers start at 37:35Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Anna: The Lego Batman Movie• Arthur: The GloryReach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree
Today we finish up our fall American Dream Miniseries with a surprise fourth episode dedicated to the listener requested BONNIE & CLYDE. This musical, maybe even more than the others we've covered in this miniseries, most easily represents the experience of Americans in 2025. Let that sink in for a minute! Here to discuss it is the show's book writer, Ivan Menchell (BONNIE & CLYDE, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, DEATH NOTE) who provides fascinating context regarding his approach to these legendary characters and the explanation behind the show's short Broadway run. Follow Ivan on Instagram at @ivanmenchell For more Frank Wildhorn, listen to JEKYLL & HYDE with Rebecca Spencer Join all the cool people at PATREON! for bonus episodes (including one today featuring BONNIE & CLYDE superfan Jennifer Lyn), essays, and polls. We continue our journeys through the worlds of One Piece and Death Note. We contemplate the morality of murder and the practicality of holding a sword in your mouth. You know, deep philosophical stuff.

If you watched the janky oddity that is the 2017 Death Note movie or the Scarlet Johansson Ghost in the Shell that also came out in 2017 (what a tough year) this is the episode for you! Anime is massive and yet a successful live action adaptation of one that's as good as the source material seems harder to find than the one piece treasure (With One Piece being the exception that breaks the rule) . Jake explains why this is and we all analyze some of the attempts including Cowboy Bebop, the insanity that is the Wachowski's Speed Racer, and yes even Dragon Ball Evolution because we love entertaining you more than we respect ourselves.Want even more Nerd of Mouth?
