TVC 702.5: Ed welcomes Joseph Atkins, author of Harry Dean Stanton: Hollywood's Zen Rebel, a deep dive into the life and times of the angular-faced character actor who not only became a leading man in the 1980s (most notably, with Paris, Texas and Repo Man), but was also an accomplished singer and musician. Joe's book includes interviews with such Harry Dean Stanton contemporaries as Nehemiah Persoff, L.Q. Jones, Dabney Coleman, Dennis Quaid, directors Alex Cox and Wim Wenders, as well as many members of Stanton's family. Harry Dean Stanton: Hollywood's Zen Rebel is available through University Press of Kentucky as well as Amazon.com. Topics this segment include how Stanton was arguably more authentic in his expression of The Method than any other actor; how he came to Hollywood in the 1960s hoping to leave his mark as a movie actor, but was pragmatic enough to recognize that television offered a lot of opportunities to find work; and how Stanton became frustrated near the end of the 1960s when contemporaries like Jack Nicholson and Warren Oates began finding leading roles, while he did not.
“They're gonna keep calling us 'cutters.' To them, it's just a dirty word. To me, it's just something else I never got a chance to be.” How has it taken this long to get to a good old-fashioned sports movie on the podcast? We watched the Peter Yates film "Breaking Away" with our good friend Joshua Clement. Dennis Christopher plays Dave Stohler, a working-class Midwest teen, passionate about Italian cycling, navigating life with his ragtag group of friends. Nominated for a handful of Oscars, including best picture, director, and a win for original screenplay, "Breaking Away" was a sleeper hit when it came out the summer of 1979. The most 70s cast of cute young men to fill a back issue of Tiger Beat Magazine. We have our lanky lead, Dennis Christopher, who's giving us 70s Timothée Chalamet, there's Dennis Quaid with his six-pack on full display, a post- "Bad News Bears" heartthrob Jackie Earle Haley, and the screen debut of Daniel Stern! Jamie James is a songwriter and musician who has been making music his whole life, and this Spring, he released his debut solo album, Straight Up, recorded with some longtime bandmates. James has always been into the blues and blues rock, and he's known for his work with Dennis Quaid & The Sharks, longtime collaborations with the late Harry Dean Stanton, and as the frontman of the '80s rockabilly trio The Kingbees. Rejoined with friends Tom Walsh (drums), Ken Stange (organ), and Tom Mancillas (bass), James took a group of songs that he wrote during the pandemic while recovering from open heart surgery to Kitten Robot Studio in Los Angeles. They recorded the ten songs on Straight Up live in the studio in one day only, capturing their years of experience playing together for the album. As an artist now in his 70s, James has a lifetime of perspective to bring not only to his songwriting, but to how he makes and records music, and the big lessons seem to be: Stay creative, stick to what you love, and make music with the people who bring you energy to do more. I spoke to Jamie James about his approach to Straight Up and his love for the blues. Ellen Adair and Eric Gilde discuss the 2002 Disney film "The Rookie." They introduce the film (2:02), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film (5:07). Amount of Baseball (13:02) revels in this embarrassment of riches, and the excellence of the District Championship Game. Baseball Accuracy (20:35) cites Jim Morris's own opinion of the film's accuracy, and his relationship to his father, along with the radar sign scene, and the St. Rita story. There are oil rig gameplay questions. Did he try out in jeans? Did his dad get the baseball? Steve Cox erasure and some other accuracies with Jim Morris's MLB debut, Royce Clayton's foul ball, Morris pitching "for two seasons," and his tryout in the rain. The scouts also discuss his teammates Jose Canseco, Wade Boggs, and Kevin Stocker, the 1999 Devil Rays. The casting of the RuffNecks is hilarious, including the batter Carlton Fisk-ing the ball in the wrong direction. Randy Quaid's pitching motion, plus smart use of his pitching double Jeff Dowdy. Eric fact-checks Texas distances, and there is an Ellen Adair Breakdown on pitchers hitting 98 MPH in 1999 and today (h/t Nick Pollack). Can Ellen name more than five who threw more than 98 MPH in 99? Storytelling (49:34) dissects the interesting film structure created by its central bargain, the function of the nuns, and the Disney veneer balanced with excellent editing and cinematography. Ellen appreciates attention being paid to the football/baseball disparity, and both laud the excellent storytelling with the early scene with the father. But where is the middle child for the first hour of the film? They discuss the first minor league game sequence, the child's questions about the Devil Rays, and the relief pitcher as hero (w/r/t Seranthony Dominguez, JoJo Romero and Ranger Suarez). Brief St. Patrick's Day Accuracy. Score (1:11:22) addresses Carter Burwell's use of flute and John Bissell's music supervision, including Guy Clark's "Stuff That Works," Willie Nelson's "Nothing I Can Do About It Now," Elvis Presley's "Run On," and House of Pain's "Jump Around." Acting (1:17:14) discusses the performances of Dennis Quaid, Rachel Griffiths, Brian Cox, Angus T. Jones and Blue Deckert. Delightfulness of Catcher (1:21:24) praises the perfect catcher behavior of Owls catcher Joel de la Garza, along with great acting by Angelo Spizzirri. The catcher at the try-out and at Jim Morris's debut also do not disappoint. Delightfulness of Announcer (1:24:56) considers the benefits of the announcer being a character in the rest of the film, and the great performance by David Blackwell. Good storytelling with the Orlando Rays announcer. Lack of Misogyny (1:27:32) considers the strength of Lori the character versus her story function, and some disappointment on the gendered role of the children and the impetus for Lori's reversal. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (1:33:01), Six Degrees of Baseball (1:38:59), Favorite Moment (1:40:58) Least Favorite Moment (1:42:08), Scene We Would Have Liked to See (1:44:30), Dreamiest Player (1:46:44), Favorite Performance (1:47:42), and Next Time (1:49:03). Jimmy Morrison co-wrote and directed the award-winning documentary The Housing Bubble with NY Times bestselling author Tom Woods. The film still holds the attendance record at the Anthem Film Festival after over 300 people spilled into the hallway at the premiere. Jimmy drove over 35,000 miles shooting interviews with people that predicted the crash like Ron Paul, Jim Rogers, Marc Faber, Peter Schiff, Doug Casey, Jim Grant, and David Stockman. All told, Morrison has three documentaries on our spiralling debt crisis which keeps getting monumentally bigger: The Housing Bubble (2019); The Fall of 2008 (2025) and The Bigger Bubble (2026). We trace the surge in global financial and US debt encompassing mind-bending US student debt, credit card debt, unfunded liabilities and more. Global debt is thought to be hovering around $300 trillion or even much more. How did it come to this? We explore this horrendous debt accumulation and the rise of central banking with filmmaker MORRISON. Morrison's work on Dennis Quaid's Grid Down won a Storyteller Award at DOC LA. Although he was responsible for the motion graphics, his primary role was as a script doctor. Jimmy produced and ran a camera for the mockumentary Rocksteppy, starring Jake Dilley and McManus Woodend, best known for his recurring role as the GEICO caveman. The film features Jeff Dowd: the Coen Brothers original inspiration for “The Dude,” as well as cameos from Oscar-winning directors David Lynch and Peter Farrelly. Unfortunately it's the hard conversations which are the ones that usually need to be had....On this very special episode we dive into a story that is simply all too real. It's time for 'Sovereign'.It's the story of a father and his teenage son; Jerry and Joseph Kane (Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay) who follow the Sovereign Citizen belief system, a deeply anti-establishment worldview rooted in distrust of government authority. As the pair travel across the country delivering self-taught legal seminars and pushing back against systems they believe have failed them, their journey brings them into conflict with Police Chief Jim Bouchart (Dennis Quaid), setting off a tragic chain of events that forces a reckoning with power, principle, and the limits of freedom. Inspired by true events. At the intersection of conspiracy, mental health and social and legal institutions that are ill equipped to deal with them all we have 'Sovereign' which is a stunning film from first time filmmaker Christian Swegal. We got to talk with Christian about the origins of the story, getting this load cast together our collective need to be more understanding of each other's journey's and so very much more.'Sovereign' is in theatres and on VOD platforms now.

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes go back in time to grift some villagers with a dragon sidekick as they revisit "DragonHeart" (1996), the medieval fantasy adventure starring Dennis Quaid, David Thewlis, and the unmistakable voice of Sean Connery as Draco the dragon.Butler brings the nostalgia, having watched the film as a kid, and still finds plenty to enjoy—from its message of honor to the humor and the rare vibe of a family-friendly fantasy that's almost extinct today. Field? Not so much. While both hosts agree the film's tone is all over the place, the villain is cartoonishly evil, and the plot has issues… there's one thing they absolutely agree on: the score is legendary. Is "DragonHeart" a charming adventure or a clunky misfire with great music? Join us as we take flight and find out.

This week, I'm pulling four titles off the shelf that all deal with prehistoric humans in some form. They're all very different films. Some take the subject seriously, others just go for laughs. What they share is a central idea of how humans interact with one another. Whether it's science labs, high schools, or the open world, these movies all find something worthwhile to focus on.Caveman (1981)Directed by Carl Gottlieb (who co-wrote Jaws), this one's a straight-up comedy. It stars Ringo Starr, Barbara Bach, Dennis Quaid, and Shelley Long, all speaking in a made-up language while running from stop-motion dinosaurs. It's a weird, physical, surprisingly consistent comedy that doesn't rely on much more than expression and timing. Jim Danforth handled the effects work, using the same animation style he brought to other fantasy films of the era.Quest for Fire (1981)Probably the most serious pick this week. Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, this is a film with no real spoken language. The cast learned a constructed language by Anthony Burgess and used movement techniques developed by Desmond Morris. Rae Dawn Chong, Ron Perlman, and Everett McGill all commit fully to their roles. It won an Oscar for Best Makeup and doesn't try to explain much—it just shows a small group of early humans trying to survive. Worth seeing for the detail and the performances alone.Iceman (1984)This one takes place in a cold research facility where a frozen prehistoric man is brought back to life. John Lone plays the Iceman and gives a performance that's more nuanced than you'd expect from this kind of premise. Timothy Hutton plays the anthropologist trying to connect with him. It's more intimate and focused than a lot of 1980s sci-fi, with a steady pace and a good sense of space. Encino Man (1992)Directed by Les Mayfield and produced by Hollywood Pictures, this is the comedy version of a caveman showing up in a modern world. Brendan Fraser plays Link, and this was the role that helped launch his career. Pauly Shore plays Stoney who sets the tone for the whole movie. There's also Sean Astin, trying to use Link as a way to get popular. It's loud, strange, and very early '90s, but it moves fast and gets a lot out of the water park, fast food, and high school scenes. The soundtrack includes Queen, Infectious Grooves, Right Said Fred and a bunch of other songs that place it squarely in 1992.None of these films feel like they're trying to say the same thing. What they do have in common is how they treat the idea of prehistoric people not as monsters or jokes, but as people. Even in the comedies, there's a sense of curiosity behind the setups. They're fun to watch, sometimes surprisingly thoughtful, and all a little out of step with what people usually mean when they talk about science fiction or historical drama. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Watch This Episode On YouTubeWatch SOVEREIGN NowSOVEREIGN (2025) is a filmmakers' thriller and the story behind its director, my guest, Christian Swegal, is one of the best in independent film this year. The reason that so many investors are reluctant to back a new director for their first feature is one of skepticism — they think the director won't be able to handle the responsibility. And when you add in powerhouse actors like Nick Offerman and Dennis Quaid, it's fair to expect a watered-down mush of a film which critics and audiences would chalk up to, well, it was a first time feature director. That's not the fate for Christian. Critics are talking about how it is perhaps Nick Offerman's best career performance, a sublime take on a man lost in the Sovereign citizen movement, and we are here today talking about how the hell did he pull it off…and with such swagger. In this episode, Christian and I discuss:Should you Google the story behind SOVEREIGN?What should people expect to see when they watch the film? “It's a character study of this man and his relationship with his son”;How he was able to make such an accomplished film for his debut feature? What he owes the real-life characters and the viewers when writing an “inspired by true events” story? How the film is a filmmaker's thriller with the little motifs in the film, and he'll explain the baby motif in the film; The brilliant casting of Nick Offerman in this film; Not getting hung up on casting -- a fantastic script will attract talented people to your film; The process of funding the film, including the use of Slated ad tax rebates; How it went from Tribeca to distribution within a few months;Advice he'd give somebody directing their first feature?“When in charge, be in charge” and how he implemented his vision no matter what; What he's working on next — “I'm drawn to true stories”Christian's Indie Film Highlight: SUNDOWN (2021) dir. by Michel Franco; MEMORY (2023) dir. by Michel FrancoMemorable Quotes:“ If people engage with the movie to the degree that they're interested to go and Google the real events I think that's a good sign.”“ The movie will be for some people and not for other people. And that's fine. It's better to be polarizing in that way. I think for a movie our size than it is to try to please every audience and to a degree.”“Or how you relate to a baby. It shows how you relate to something that's innocent and pure and really it's a stand in for empathy.”“ My advice to filmmakers that I wish I had earlier was just don't wait. Focus on your material and on the story and then just go.”“ Every single person we talk to along the way, in pre-production through production, through the end of it, had their spin on how they would fix the thing and make it different. And that's what's great. And when they direct their movie, then they can do their version of it.”Links:Follow Christian On InstagramFollow SOVEREIGN On InstagramSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content
On this week's episode, I talked to Christian Swegal, the writer-director of the new film Sovereign, about his new film and its focus on the cult-like behavior of the Sovereign Citizen movement. We discussed Nick Offerman's commanding lead performance, how you adapt a movie with an ending and setting as tragic as this one, and the difficulty of finding compassion even for those who seem to deserve it least. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to check out Sovereign, which is in theaters and on VOD now. And please, share this with a friend! Movies like this don't have huge ad budgets; they need word of mouth to thrive. It's a tough story with some great performances by Offerman, Jacob Tremblay, and Dennis Quaid. If you want to see something a little different from the standard franchise fare flooding the multiplex, you have to support movies like Sovereign.
Jason Fraley interviews filmmaker Christian Swegal about his new action crime thriller “Sovereign," which opens in movie theaters nationwide today, starring Nick Offerman, Jacob Tremblay and Dennis Quaid. They discuss his approach to writing the script and making his directorial debut, as well his favorite filmmakers from Sidney Lumet to Michael Mann. (Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")

"Sovereign" had its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival, where it received positive reviews for its performances from Nick Offerman, Jacob Tremblay, and Dennis Quaid, as well as Christian Swegal's writing and direction. Based on real events, the story follows a father and son (Offerman and Tremblay) who identify as Sovereign Citizens, a group of anti-government extremists, as they venture across the country and find themselves in a standoff with a chief of police (Dennis Quaid) that sets off an intense manhunt with tragic consequences. Making his feature directorial debut, Swegal was kind enough to speak with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. We don't know about you guys but we could use some silly escapism. This month, the manatees are checking out 1996's Dragonheart! Directed by Rob Cohen and starring Dennis Quaid and the voice of Sean Connery, Dragonheart was one of our hosts' favorite movies when he was a child. But does it hold up to an adult audience? (Of course not.) But it does prove particularly rich springboard for ranting about Dungeons and Dragons, Patrick Stewart, the differences between accents and speech impediments, the differences between house flipping and scalping (hint: there are none), and recent peer-pressured forays into the Romantasy genre of smut novels (have you all heard about that one yet?). It's been so long since we talked that we ramble on for about six hours. Might get more than one night out of this one!
What does it take to make a movie about one of America's most controversial presidents in an industry that didn't want it made? In this behind-the-scenes exclusive, Dr. Phil sits down with film producer and author Mark Joseph to discuss his new memoir "Making REAGAN" and unpack the untold journey behind the making of "Reagan" the movie, starring Dennis Quaid. From unreliable financiers and COVID shutdowns to navigating deep political divides and fraudsters who nearly tanked the project, Joseph shares the personal and professional chaos that came with telling Reagan's story truthfully. He talks candidly about why Quaid was the only actor who could pull it off, how real-life Cold War threats inspired fictional KGB characters, and why Reagan's flaws were the key to humanizing him on screen. Tune in and find out: Why Hollywood tried to bury the film—and how it survived. What Reagan's son and inner circle really thought of the final cut. How personal loss, timing, and emotional maturity shaped Quaid's performance. The business of biopics—and how to spot a fraud in the film industry. As the world falls apart — and we prep for our Buckley mega-episode with Sam Tanenhaus — we're unlocking this fun episode from late last year. Subscribe at Patreon.com/knowyourenemy to never miss an episode like this one. And please listen to Jesse's insane, hilarious, freakishly prescient (and fake) podcast Tech Talk. A palette cleanser for subscribers: we watched Reagan (2024), with our intrepid producer, Jesse Brenneman. Even better, the movie is based on the 2006 book, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism, by Paul Kengor — who just happens to have been Matt's close mentor as an undergraduate student. Reagan clocks in at over two hours and twenty minutes, and it's a wild, even fantastical ride that offers a revealing glimpse into the conservative psyche and a faithful rendition of the most hagiographic version of the Reagan mythology, especially his personal responsibility for ending the Cold War and finally putting the Soviet Union on the ash heap of history.Sources:Reagan (2024)Paul Kengor, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism(2006)— God and Ronald Reagan: A Spiritual Life(2004)— A Pope and a President: John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, and the Extraordinary Untold Story of the 20th Century(2017)Edmund Morris, Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan (1999)
