Wait til you hear about our NFL ring ceremony concept...Jonah is back in from his Fresh year of college and contributes in a big way. Maria can best be described as mildly bemused and tolerant as the guys propose the following:1) What would you do if you had the Stanley Cup for a day?2) A total reimagining of the NFL Super Bowl ring ceremony. What if NFL Super Bowl rings were turned over every year like the Stanley Cup? 50 yard line, previous winners line up across from new winners and (Benny Hill theme starts playing) each player has to find another one to wear his ring.Would there be Red Carpet event fan overlap for the Super Bowl if there was a week long leadup with players discussing the rings, their potential outfits for the ceremony and who their potential targets might be?If this sounds to you like it might be a terrible idea, maybe you need to ask yourself this question: “If Elvis Grbac, 1994 Michigan Wolverines starting QB, thinks its a great idea...is it possible that maybe I’m the one missing the point?”*If you are an NFL athlete or know an NFL athlete, please explain to us why or how you think this will be successful and who to contact to make it work.*To date, Elvis Grbac is definitely unaware of this idea and may or may not think it’s a good idea. Please visit us at https://thetragedyacademy.com On social media, you can find us at @thetragedyacademypodcast on Instagram, The Tragedy Academy Podcast on Facebook, and @tragedy_academy on Twitter. Making note that any "disrespect has been well noted" Earl Thomas returned to the Seahawks this week early enough that he could be ready to play in the opener against the Broncos. Can we be certain that the disrespect he speaks of is directed at the Seahawks or was it from fans and other teams around the league? The 53-man roster continued to take shape this week as Seattle picked up a couple players off of waivers and some familiar names landed on the practice squad. Only having a bit of preseason action to work from, Adam and Brandan note that the Broncos third preseason game showed how Denver could be better than the preseason power rankings are giving them credit for. Von Miller is the biggest concern the Seattle should have going into the game and Case Keenum has a track record of performing poorly is his first start of almost every season. Dr. David Chao, former team head physician for the San Diego Chargers, is now a sports medical analyst for the San Diego Union Tribune. He also hosts the new Pro Football Doc Podcast and interacts on Twitter @ProFootballDoc. Dr. Chao joins the show to talk about what goes on behind the scenes among coaches and team doctors and talks about how he uses video to help offer fans more information about an injury a player may have. He offers his thoughts on Doug Baldwin, K.J. Wright, Dion Jordan and what could have kept Tyler Lockett from reaching full strength last season. The first week of picks are in as the guys run through the first week of action ahead of this weekend's games. In the do better segment, a Cowboys writer is still unwilling to give up the fight and NFL.com has Seattle looking up at the rest of the NFC West in their power rankings leading into Week 1. The Seahawks had an up and down performance in Los Angeles, so Brian Nemhauser, Nathan Ernst, and Jeff Simmons return to Real Hawk Talk to break down Week 2 of the pre-season, how the team looks from a roster standpoint, and the team's decision to move on from punter/cult hero Jon Ryan.
The Seahawks have signed what many hope to be their most impactful free agent signing yet by bringing in D.J. Fluker. Fluker is another top draft pick from the 2013 season, and Kenneth Arthur, managing editor of Field Gulls, joins us to talk about the move along with some of his observations from the offseason to this point. One of the things Kenneth likes best about the Fluker signing - it's better than paying top dollar for the other guards who hit the market. But the best possible outcome might be finding a guard via the draft who can ultimately take over at that position. Despite all of the change this offseason, Kenneth says the direction of the team seems to be an approach toward sticking to the philosophy that got the team to a Super Bowl. Cutting Richard Sherman even allows them to keep last year's roster together as much as possible by allowing them to keep Dion Jordan, Justin Coleman, Bradley McDougald and potentially Byron Maxwell. The Seahawks were at their best when they had rookies playing at a high level with contracts that were far below the value they offered. They were able to find players in that "middle class" who were able to compete and produce in ways that led them to extensions with the team. In hindsight, perhaps it would have been better to move on from those players. We discuss the projections of the Seahawks possibly only winning six games, and Kenneth points out how a top quarterback like Phillip Rivers has been able to produce winning seasons without a lot of help around him. Even if a couple big names leave, Russell Wilson should be able to lead the Seahawks to a winning record. Clinton Bonner joins the show to talk about some of the moves from the offseason including Luke Willson's departure. He talks about what he's going to miss most from the Wilson to Willson connection. He also has a new public access show he's starting called TNT Dynamite Thursdays that launches on Thursday. The show closes with calls to do better for Cowboys fans who feel entitled to Earl Thomas and to Mike Freeman for a nonsensical take on how things will go for Russell Wilson this coming year. Better at life honors go to UMBC and their Twitter account manager and to a caretaker of an island off the coast of Italy. General manager John Schneider took to the podium this week and it now sounds like the media is finally getting the message that he's been stating consistently that Sherman isn't going anywhere unless the team gets the kind of value they want in return. Since Sherman hasn't been traded yet, it's safe to assume that hasn't and probably won't be happening. Marshawn Lynch apparently has a deadline to sign with the Raiders before the draft and the guys wonder what a true deadline for a Lynch signing really looks like. Other news items include the departure of Garry Gilliam and contract numbers for defensive lineman Dion Jordan. Rob Staton of seahawksdraftblog.com returns to the Sea Hawkers Podcast to make a prediction of who the Seahawks will take with their first pick. Considering the Seahawks have done little to bolster their defensive line in the offseason, Rob thinks that the first pick would be the way to get help there and he has a pass rusher in mind that the team will like based on some unique characteristics. The guys also amuse themselves with the idea that the Seahawks have a chance to get another NFL Taco. Check out Rob's recent article: Considering a trade-up scenario for the Seahawks Following the discussion with Rob, Adam takes a look at the quarterbacks in the draft who he feels have the best chance for success at the professional level. Davis Webb from Cal made an official visit with the team recently and with the legal issues facing Trevone Boykin, could Webb be a quarterback the team looks at in the early rounds? Dave Bloomquist checks in with a deep dive into the advanced analytics for NFL scheduling and looks at the Seahawks rest differential to see where they may be at a disadvantage compared to the rest of the league. From there, Brandan takes a run at a Wisconsin reporter for publishing information that the NFL is supposed to keep private and Adam sends a do better to some university researchers. Better at life nods go out to supporters of science and to Cliff Avril for living up to his 2016 title of Housing Commissioner. In the top news from the past two weeks, the Seahawks continue to accumulate top 5 draft picks from the 2013 draft as Dion Jordan is added to the roster after a disappointing beginning to his career in Miami. After collecting all of the Buffalo Bills running backs from the Marshawn Lynch era, is this the next goal for Seattle? We continue our series of looking at players the Seahawks have reportedly met with leading up to the 2017 NFL Draft and this week it's a look at the defensive backs. Reports show Seattle has met with at least six prospects at corner and another six at safety. It looks like this is a draft where the Seahawks could be looking to create a lot of competition in the secondary. Standout players in this group include Budda Baker from Washington, Obi Melifonwu of Connecticut and Cordrea Tankersley of Clemson. Reports had Marshawn Lynch coming out of retirement this past week, until Marshawn straightened things out by saying that when [catfish] gets real, he'll let us know. Adam wants to make sure the Raiders know that he wants some significant compensation if Seattle is going to deal him. With continued reports speculating on trade possibilities for Richard Sherman, and a report saying the trade was Sherman's idea, Adam tries to find a rational explanation that fits all of the reports that we've heard in the past month. Thanks to our listeners, we've now hit 200 reviews in the U.S. iTunes store and we're looking for about 40 more to try and run down a podcast about the NFL. The guys get into why a writer for Bleacher Report and a writer for Awful Announcing need to do better. Find out why golfer John Daly and Seahawks corner DeAndre Elliott are better at life in the closing segment of the show.
