To conclude this season of The Accutron Show, our hosts David Graver and Indrani talk to actor, writer and philanthropist Jay Ellis. Together they talk about Jay's book called "Did Everyone Have an Imaginary Friend (or Just Me)? ", a testament to the importance of invention, trusting oneself, and making space for creativity; It is a memoir of a kid who confided in his imaginary sidekick to navigate parallel pop culture universes (like watching Fresh Prince alongside John Hughes movies or listening to Ja Rule and Dave Matthews) to a lifetime of birthday disappointment (being a Christmas-season Capricorn will do that to you) and hoop dreams gone bad. Jay has also starred in the HBO hit series "Insecure" and in the blockbuster movie "Top Gun: Maverick". Join us for one last time for this season and use your imagination until we return to you.EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS7:00 I grew up in the 80s and 90s, I moved around quite a bit. I went to 12 schools in 13 years. So I had an imaginary friend, his name was Mikey and he was a mix of Dwayne Wayne from "A Different World" and Fresh Prince from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". 21:17 The movie industry is an industry of "runs''. People go on runs; sometimes they last for years, some times are also gone for years. One thing I always try to remember is that it's all a journey. 26:00 To be able to work on a documentary about Sue Bird was one of the most incredible projects I worked on in my life. We received so many "no's" for this project but we made it and it was great, especially to see it screened at Sundance.

SIRreal Life: Morning Motivation Show

I was watching a “Different World” with my wife recently (one of the greatest television shows ever btw lol) and one of the main characters Dwayne Wayne was speaking to his students about fleas in a jar. Every day they would jump up attempting to get out of the jar, but they would hit their head on the lid. One day after many days the lid was removed. However, by this time the fleas no longer attempted to jump because they had been conditioned to the lid still being on the container. The fleas were now free to leap, but the fear of bumping their head and of being kept in the jar kept them from leaping. A lot of people in society are still in the Jar. Regardless of your race, society has done a wonderful job of keeping the majority of the population in a jar without a lid because it's more productive for the “system”. In this episode, we’ll dive into the crabs in a barrel mentality. How we become like a flea circus and the components that make the show operate. We’ll also explore areas of opportunities to escape the “trap”

About a month after hiring a manager, Chante landed a recording contract with MCA Records and began working on her first album. Her debut, which she titled Precious, was released in 1992 and went on to sell over half a million copies, thanks in part to two singles, "Love's Taken Over" and "It's Alright," which became top five hits on the R&B charts. PEOPLE! It behooves us to bring you a very special edition of the podcast this week... Anne Beatts is a writer, producer, professor at USC and Chapman, and true legend of comedy. She has a sketch writing course coming up July 30th through August 1st at Wordspace (http://wordspace.net) in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Atwater Village. In our conversation, she shares her philosophies on the differences between writing and performing for radio, stage, stand-up, and screen, and her thoughts on Los Angeles comedy clubs, improvisation, spontaneity, and writing the funny down for later. She was the first woman to become editor at National Lampoon, both the magazine and radio show. As one of the first writers hired by Lorne Michaels, she won the Emmy for her work on "Saturday Night Live," where her and Rosie Shuster created such characters as Uncle Roy, Fred Garvin: Male Prostitute, and Todd and Lisa (whose popularity literally put the word "nerd" in the dictionary). She created the cult TV hit "Square Pegs," which launched Sarah Jessica Parker's career and featured musical performances by The Waitresses and Devo, introducing punk rock characters on TV... sorry, sorry, "new wave" (different head). We talk about dealing with the network, a difficult Mike Ovitz, and a conveniently placed Dwayne "Dobie Gillis" Hickman in trying to see her vision through for the show. She also helped revamp the first season of "A Different World," and created the characters that would later usurp Lisa Bonet's Denise Huxtable as the leads on the show - Whitley and Dwayne Wayne. Besides Beatts' literary and television works, she also wrote the book for Leader Of The Pack, the Elle Greenwich Broadway musical. We discuss her upcoming classes, how she made her way as a woman in a male-dominated industry, the questionable ethics behind how money is made with internet content, why Gary Shandling is more like Craig Kilborn than Yoda, where Jim Hightower has got it right (but where he got it wrong), the recent GQ issue on comedy, why "Modern Family" is both good and bad (and "According To Jim" is just bad), the genius of Mitch Hedberg, the insanity of Michael O'Donoghue, a prank Bill Murray played on her before his "Square Pegs" appearance, a joke she wrote for Chevy Chase that he tried to sandbag, and many more memories from her 40 years in comedy. For more information on Finding Your Comedic Voice, contact Wordspace at info@wordspace.net. Or, contact Anne Beatts directly at Beattsclass@aol.com, or 310-273-1637.
