Dal 2018 un decreto emanato dal Ministero delle infrastrutture e dei trasporti regola la sperimentazione delle cosiddette ‘smart road’, strade che grazie alle nuove tecnologie possono dialogare con gli utenti a bordo delle vetture. Gli standard sono già stati definiti e alcuni tratti stradali e autostradali hanno già terminato la fase sperimentale e hanno fatto le dovute verifiche, ma visti i ritardi causati dalla pandemia è necessario adeguare l’aspetto normativo alle evoluzioni tecnologiche che nel frattempo sono sopraggiunte - commenta Vito Mauro, componente dell'Osservatorio Tecnico Nazionale Smart Road del Ministero delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti. Guarda al futuro anche Mercedes-Benz, da tempo ormai votata all’elettrico e dotata di una gamma di 10 veicoli full electric. Nel percorso verso la mobilità sostenibile l’elettrico è la tecnologia più avanzata, sicura e accessibile, ma soprattutto gradita dagli automobilisti - afferma Marc Langenbrinck, nuovo CEO di Mercedes Benz Italia. In attesa di avere una rete di infrastrutture adeguata è importante puntare sull’autonomia dei veicoli, come dimostra l’imminente lancio della nuova EQXX, che arriverà a 1.200 chilometri di autonomia su strada - conclude Langenbrick.

In this special episode, Joe and Drew take a look - both macro and micro - at the recent IAA, also known as the Munich motor show.  The motor show itself:This is the second coming of the biennial motor show in Munich. We talked about how it's evolved and what it means for brands who are compelled to show at the Messe, or exhibition grounds, and in the centre of the city.  The Mercedes CLA and the state of Mercedes design:Although sporting enough Mercedes badges to make a Louis Vuitton trunk blush, Joe's quite complimentary of the CLA concept. And the EQXX blows his mind with its intelligence and execution.  The new BMW 5 Series:  Sadly, the same can't be said for the new, €98,000 5er. A dog's dinner outside and evidence inside of just how hard BMW has had to work to make this new, electrified platform pay, all at the cost of customer experience.  The BMW Neue Klasse: It's not all bad news at BMW as the Neue Klasse shows a brand returning to form. From its delightful glasshouse to serene interior, it shows a promising future for the 3 Series. The €45,000 Renault Scénic:What was once a compact, family MPV has turned in to another crossover for the upwardly mobile. While beautifully designed (and better finished than the BMW 5 Series) it's up against the Tesla Model Y. Old world values versus new world tech: FIGHT!  The geopolitical backdrop: The Chinese brought it home to the Germans, and the Germans don't like it. The EU is investigating China's subsidies but it better be careful: don't bit the hand that feeds you, as the saying goes. The death of European automotive design has been exaggerated: But it is struggling. Automakers desperately need to find a renewed sense of focus, a greater sense of connection to a rapidly evolving younger market and, perhaps, consider a pivot to America in order to thrive. Any other business:Joe discusses the emerging AV clustercuss in San Francisco and how Volkswagen's desultory efforts to build an American charging network have driven their competitors to adopt Tesla's charging standard.  Drew, on the other hand, is delighted by a company that's electrifying original Renault Twingos and announces our new Instagram account.That's it for this episode! Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius became CEO in 2019 but has been working for Mercedes since 1993 in almost every part of the company. During that period, Mercedes spent time getting a lot bigger; the company famously merged with Chrysler for a time, forming a giant called DaimlerChrysler. But, over the past few years, it's actually been getting much smaller and more focused. The Chrysler deal was undone and, just recently, Ola spun off the truck division into its own public company called Daimler Truck, leaving Mercedes-Benz to stand alone as a premium car brand. Car companies are either consolidating into giant conglomerates like Stellantis or shrinking and focusing like Mercedes. A lot of that is driven by the huge shift to electric vehicles and then, on top of that, to cars essentially becoming rolling computers. You'll hear Ola refer to cars as “digital products” a lot — and to Mercedes itself as a tech company. (Actually, he says it's a luxury and tech company.) Mercedes now has two new EVs, the EQS and the EQE, both of which have massive infotainment screens running Mercedes' proprietary MBUX system, which even has its own voice assistant called Hey Mercedes. I had to ask Ola about Apple's recent announcement that the next version of CarPlay would be able to take over every display in the car, including the instrument cluster. Apple showed a Mercedes logo on a slide during that presentation — so, is Ola ready to hand over his UI to Cupertino?  Let's find out. Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz. Here we go. PROTERRA INTRODUCES ZX5 MAX ELECTRIC BUS WITH 738 KWH PACK - Proterra is increasing the amount of energy onboard its purpose-built ZX5 electric transit bus, delivering more battery storage to help transit agencies scale zero-emission bus fleets with electric vehicle technology. Starting in 2023, the 40-foot Proterra ZX5 Max electric transit bus can be equipped with up to 738 kilowatt hours (kWh) of onboard energy. - ZX5 Max can deliver more than 300 miles of drive range on a single charge, depending on route conditions, configuration and operation. - The 35-foot and 40-foot ZX5+ electric bus models can be equipped with up to 492 kWh of onboard energy for routes with less demanding range requirements. Deliveries of those higher-end vehicles dropped by more than half in 2021, from 57,039 cars to 24,964. That wasn't a complete shock, though, as many customers wanted to (or had to) wait for S and X revamps that weren't slated to ship until spring, including the high-performance Plaid variants. Tesla can make such a switch because the components in its cars are designed to be controlled largely by software. - Much of its recent growth has been propelled by sales in Europe and China. The company said Tuesday that it will be able to build at a rate of 150,000 pickups per year at its electric vehicle factory in Dearborn, Michigan, by the middle of next year. Previously Ford had expected to build 80,000 per year at the new factory, which likely will have to be expanded to handle the increased output. Additional reservation holders will be invited to place their orders in phases over the next few months. - Initial reservation conversions will be for 2022 model year vehicles. Once that run is out, Ford will open order banks for model year 2023 trucks. The upshot? An eye-popping design coupled with advanced engineering that squeezes in power, efficiency and range into a compact and sporty package. - Instead, the company used the EQXX as a proving ground of how far it can push design and engineering. The company focused on improving the energy density of its battery and boosting overall efficiency by reducing the weight of the vehicle using some lightweight materials including for the battery case and brake discs, an aerodynamic design that produces a drag coefficient of Cd 0.175, ultra low-rolling resistance tires and a new compact electric drivetrain. - The end result is a vehicle that Mercedes says can travel 620 miles on a single charge and boasts 95% efficiency, which means 95% of the energy from the battery ends up at the wheels. - Instead of just increasing the size of the battery, Mercedes-Benz and its HPP team developed a new battery pack with an energy density of close to 400 Wh/L. - The company was able to increase energy density in part from what Mercedes described as “significant progress” in the chemistry of the anodes, which has higher silicon content and advanced composition that allowed it to hold considerably more energy than commonly used anodes. PLUG-IN CAR GRANT CUT FROM £2,500 TO £1,500 - The Government has brought yet another round of cuts to its plug-in car grant. Buyers can now only claim a maximum of £1,500 off the price of a new eligible plug-in car (£1,000 less than before) on models costing no more than £32,000 – £3,000 less than previously. - The plug-in van grant has also been cut to £5,000 for large vans and £2,500 for small vans, with a limit of 1,000 customers per year. Plug-in motorcycles will benefit from a maximum of £500 off and mopeds £150. - Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), said the cuts represented "a blow to customers". Der Mercedes EQXX soll in Sachen Elektromobilität neue Maßstäbe setzen: Die Zielmarke sind 1000 Kilometer Reichweite mit einer Akkuladung. Die wollen die Entwickler des seriennahen Konzeptautos aber nicht einfach mit einer riesigen Batterie erreichen, sondern mit effizienter Technik, neuen Fertigungsmethoden und einer ausgefeilten Aerodynamik - die selbst den hauseigenen Weltrekordhalter EQS mit seinem cW-Wert von 0,20 in den Schatten stellt. So soll der EQXX auf einen Realverbrauch unter 10 kWh/100 Kilometer kommen - und wäre damit eines der sparsamsten E-Autos der Welt. Ein Kampf zwischen Aerodynamik und den Designern scheint also vorprogrammiert, denn die Ansprüche, Wünsche und Ziele dieser beiden Bereiche könnten kaum unterschiedlicher sein. Hinzu kommen die technischen Grenzen.
