State Farm's decision to pull its 2025 Super Bowl ad was prompted by the wildfires that continue to impact the Los Angeles area. With the company's absence from the Big Game, no insurance firm is slated to appear in this year's live telecast. Not having ads with Jake from State Farm, Flo from Progressive or the Geico Gecko during the game might seem unusual, but it reflects an ongoing trend of declining ad spend from the biggest insurers in the U.S. Advertising spend from the insurance industry has cratered in recent years as underwriting costs skyrocketed. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence data for 2023 (the most recent full-year numbers available), Progressive, the largest spender in the category, was down 30% to $1.22 billion. Geico slashed its ad budget by 34% year-over-year to $838.2 million. Allstate cut its budget by 31% to $651.3 million.

It's sometimes hard to keep up with all of the characters on TV trying to sell you insurance. Jake from State Farm, The Geico Gecko, and Flo from Progressive are some of the best-known. And while I don't care about those pitch persons or animals, there is one insurance spokesman I love. He's Dr Rick from Progressive. You don't see his commercials as much as Flo's, and that's a shame. He's the self-help guru trying to keep you from turning into your parents. Every time I see one of his commercials come on screen, I laugh. And it doesn't matter how many times I've seen that ad... Welcome -- one and all! -- to another episode of Constellation, Last Stand Media's conversational podcast. This week, Colin is joined by Punching Up's Micah Moriarty, Defining Duke's MrMattyPlays, and Summon Sign's Brad Ellis. Matty kicks things off with a soliloquy for Game Informer, the popular gaming publication founded in the early-'90s, and inexplicably shuttered right before we began recording. How do we feel about its closure, and its impact on the industry? Next up is Micah, who inquires as to our favorite brand mascots over the years. Where do the Geico Gecko, Mr. Clean, and the Trix Rabbit stack-up? Then, Brad brings us on a journey, recounting our favorite roadtrip memories from our past. Did we find ourselves on long roadbound adventures with friends and family? Finally, Colin wraps things up by inquiring about space travel. How does everyone feel about the idea of exploring the seemingly unexplorable? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Well, we know you heard it through the grapevine and the rumors are true! Baconsale is doing another ridiculous deathmatch. Why? Because they're gr-r-reat! On this episode, Joel, Kent, and Zack have randomly placed 64 popular brand mascots on a bracket to discover who can take a bite out of crime (and their opponent). And as these colorful commercial characters and animated anthropomorphic animals do battle with one another, things get sour, then sweet, then just plain weird. Will Twinkie the Kid be able to avoid the Noid? Will the Geico Gecko survive a nice Hawaiian Punch? Will Little Caesar be forced to Eat Mor Chikin? Does this episode contain the most references to beer & cigarettes in Baconsale history? Press play to find out. You can also download the official bracket for this tournament at Baconsale.com.

Tony the Tiger, Jake from State Farm, the GEICO Gecko – so many ads are inseparable from their spokespeople. And maybe one of the most versatile and quirky of those characters, Mr. Ernest P. Worrell, would sell you anything from buttermilk to loans with his signature enthusiasm, stylish denim vest, and unforgettable catchphrase… Ray teaches Rob about how Jim Varney, a.k.a. Ernest, and John Cherry created one of the most iconic characters in commercials; why Ernest's success in local broadcasting actually worked against him when it came to national ads; how Cherry and Varney parlayed Ernest's popularity into film success; why some of Ernest's film and characters don't age very well; and whether there's still a place for broad slapstick comedy in today's movies and TV. 2022.12.06 – 0705 – Animal Characterisations Animal characterisationsAnthropomorphism is giving animals human-like characteristics and emotions – it's the basis of many children's books such as the famous Mickey Mouse or Winnie The Pooh as well as widely used in commercials (think of Martin the Geico Gecko the mascot of the insurance brand).[1]Of course, giving a voice to an animal is really voice acting, so many of the skills are similar to creating a voice for another human character, but there are specific skills involved. The same research needs to be done to help with your tone and vocal range.· Character attributes· How they are drawn (literally) – are they hunched over and eyes half shut or standing tall with eyes wide open? You can see how each of these looks would suggest another kind of voice· The ‘generic' character of that particular creature: snakes are seen as slow-moving and sly, monkeys as excitable, so how can you bring those attributes into the way your character talks? · When considering how an animal sounds, think where their voice comes from: for a growly bear you will need a lot of chest resonance and maybe a throaty sound, a hound dog may be more jowly and with a sound from the mouth cavity. Smaller animals (including say a terrier) are naturally higher-pitched in tone, a cat's miaow is quite a nasal sound. A bird sound may be more of a whistle… · Think of how the animal moves – and move in a similar way: to help with your ‘monkey-voice' perhaps be wide-eyed and expressive in your face, maybe talk in short and fast bursts of speech as though jumping from one idea to another as you might jump from one branch to another. Owls are often considered wise, so a slower, more-thoughtful delivery, with a relaxed and confident stance, maybe glasses on the end of your nose and stroking your chin…· The situation they are in· The context - who are they interacting with and why, as well as their back story (what led them to behave this way?) Week 2 of the Green Bay Packers season is a 27-10 win over the Chicago Bears. Mike and Matt talk about that a whole lot. The Packers offense looked much smoother in this one, and we're excited that we knew the obvious answers why. More Aaron Jones is good! We look ahead to next week vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team the Packers have had trouble with in the past, and take a look around Week 2 in the NFL. We didn't mention the Geico Gecko, but I want to make our stance clear. He should be evaporated in The Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Stay cheesy, drink beer, and watch football. You don't have to fight Marshon Lattimore. Music: 53 by OverNightMike. Buy the album.
Oh gosh oh golly. Allstate, call us. We're hatching a plan to guillotine the Geico Gecko with State Farm. You're gonna wanna get in on this. Mike and Matt talk Week 1 across the NFL and stumble unwittingly into a recap of the Packers Week 1 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. There were some positives there! We promise! Most of it was bad though. We don't talk about Brett Favre's welfare fraud. Matt gives an ASMR play by play on a one year old can of New Glarus that has been in a box in his closet. This one is free, but next week you have to Venmo him $5. Stay cheesy, drink beer, and watch football. You don't have to commit welfare fraud. Music: 53 by OverNightMike. Buy the album.

“We are loyal and loyalty is very common in business, but it's what he calls ‘polygamously loyal.' And essentially what that means is exactly what it sounds like: we're loyal to a handful of brands.” Austin Franke This week's guest is the founder and behavioral strategist at Woo Punch, a brand communications consultancy. As a brand design and advertising consultant, he helps brands construct and establish memory structures in their customer's brains over time. As a mission consultant, he leverages behavioral science to help business owners pursue the long-term good of their company, their employees, and their customers without sacrificing their personal lives. And as a writer, he exposes the lies of business gurus with empirical evidence that debunks their claims. He has a simple message: customers don't really think about brands. Advertising's primary purpose is to remind customers, consciously and unconsciously, that brands exist. His name is Austin Franke, and we'll be getting into the nitty-gritty when it comes to getting and, most importantly, holding a potential client's attention. How does this work? And how can we make it work better without being sleazy? In this episode, we'll find out! Making Your Own Music We start off the show with a look back at the sounds that influenced Austin as a child, from his piano lessons in kindergarten to his uncle's career as a musician. He recalls how he discovered the beauty of songwriting and creating his own music while learning to play the guitar, and the impact that jazz had upon him: “When I listen to jazz it just literally transports to me another place, and I don't know of any other genre that's ever really done that for me.” Seducing the Subconscious Next, we talk about how the study of behavioral science changed the way he sees marketing, and how it challenges the conventional wisdom of trying to create brand loyalty. We discuss the book Seducing the Subconscious by Robert Heath and just how many decisions we make during the day happen on a purely subconscious level. “I'm very intrigued by the idea,” he explains, “that most of our decisions happen without us ever knowing that we're making them.” The “Mad Men” Myth Austin tells us about how Professor Byron Sharp created the term “polygamous loyalty,” and showed that brand loyalty doesn't really create growth so much as result from it. We talk about “the ‘Mad Men' myth” and how Don Draper's persuasive approach to advertising is a good example of how not to advertise in this day and age. As Austin explains it: “we know that the goal of advertising is essentially to remind customers you exist when they are ready to buy.” Disruptive Geckos The first half of our interview concludes as we talk about how difficult industry innovation can really be. We take a look at the insurance industry as a case study in marketing disruption, and how Geico's famous gecko completely changed the rules when it came to insurance advertising. “Geico disrupted an entire industry,” he says, “and I think the insurance industry is the best example I can think of right now that really leverages audio assets.” Next week we'll continue with a look at how social media has changed advertising, the future of Clubhouse and online communities, and how Woo Punch is helping clients build distinctive brand assets. Episode Summary Music, songwriting, and the power of jazz. Behavioral science and the truth about marketing. A look at polygamous loyalty and debunking the Mad Men myth. The Salem Witch hysteria swept New England in the 17th century but it wasn't really fully about witches. It was about the power of belief. That power was so strong that the fear resulting from it caused normal people - judges, clergymen, shop-owners, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and all alike to believe in the irrational, illogical, and obtuse sensationalized belief that their neighbors and friends were witches. On today's Halloween Special, author Stephen Hawley Martin (Episode 65 Life After Death) joins us for a second time to discuss his new book, The Witch of Amesbury, the idea of belief, and all things witches. Stephen has unique insight that no one else does regarding witches (one in particular), so saddle up on your broomstick and be ready to be regaled about witches like you never have before. Stephen Hawley Martin is the author of more than three-dozen books, including five novels, half a dozen business management titles, and a number of self-help books and metaphysical investigations. He is a former principal of the world-renowned ad firm, The Martin Agency, creator of the GEICO Gecko and “Virginia is for lovers.” He has also won first place for fiction from Independent Publisher and first place for nonfiction from USA Book News. His new book "The Witch of Amesbury" can be found on Amazon or at shmartin.com along with dozens of other titles. In addition to being an author, Steve is a ghostwriter, book designer, editor, and publisher, and his company, The Oaklea Press, has over 100 titles in print. — Did the Witch of Amesbury have anything to do with creating the GEICO Gecko? And the famous slogan, “Virginia is for Lovers?” — Stephen Hawley Martin, a former principal of the international ad firm behind those and other campaigns you have seen on television says he believes she actually played a role. He says that being the direct descendant of someone who was hanged for witchcraft, and hearing about it frequently while growing up, caused him and his brother David, who co-founded the firm, to think differently about the world and reality, and to take more risks than most people would. Those characteristics, Stephen says, can lead not only to creating a successful business, but to advertising that breaks through the clutter. Valeria Teles interviews Stephen Hawley Martin — the author of “The Witch of Amesbury & Matriarch of an Advertising Dynasty.” Bestselling author Stephen Hawley Martin has had a more than half dozen titles achieve bestseller status on Amazon.com and is the only three-time winner of the Writer's Digest Book Award, having won first prize twice for fiction and once for nonfiction. He also has won a first prize for visionary fiction from Independent Publisher and a first prize for nonfiction from USA Book News. In all, he has written seventeen books under his own name and has ghostwritten a half dozen more, including a memoir for a $2.5 billion in sales tech company CEO, a bestselling business management title for another tech company CEO, and two titles for consultants in the Six Sigma and Lean Production arena. For two years, he hosted a successful weekly Internet talk radio show, “The Truth about Life,” which averaged 30,000 listener downloads per episode. "The truth is not what historians have been saying up until now" -- Stephen Hawley Martin9/29/2021The Skeptic MetaphysicianThe Witch of Amesbury and Expanding Consciousness with Stephen Hawley MartinSummaryAs the talk show host of a popular weekly internet podcast from 2007 through 2009, “The Truth About Life,” it became clear to bestselling author Stephen Hawley Martin as he interviewed dozens of near death survivors, psychics, researchers into the paranormal, as well as quantum physicists and medical doctors, that humankind is on the cusp of a transition to a new understanding of the true nature of reality. Stephen Hawley Martin begins the interview with what the author believes to be the true story of his ancestor, Susannah North Martin, and what led to her trial and execution in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, then expands into mind-blowing topics such as possession, the power of belief, Ouija Boards, how science is being taught under false pretenses, how consciousness is not confined to our brains, the Division of Perception Studies at University of Virginia, the Monroe Institute, the truth behind reincarnation and the powerful evidence that states we will never die. This conversation spans so far and wide that you won't believe your ears! From Edgar Cayce to near death experiences, karma and the Silent Observer, this is one conversation you don't want to miss!Info about our guest Today's guest is not only a bestselling author of more than 2 dozen books that would be amazingly interesting to our audience (much more on that in a bit), but also had a very popular internet talk show called “The Truth About Life”, which delved into similar topics that we discuss n this show.On that program, he interviewed dozens of near death survivors, psychics, researchers into the paranormal, as well as quantum physicists and medical doctors, and through it all realized that humankind is on the cusp of a transition to a new understanding of the true nature of reality. He believes that this will result in a rebirth of optimism and the world becoming a better place to live and work, something we would all welcome without a doubt. He is a former principal of the world renowned ad firm The Martin Agency…the agency that created the GEICO Gecko and the “Virginia Is For Lovers,” slogan, and is currently the editor and publisher of The Oaklea Press, which specializes in parapsychology and body, mind & spirit topics…plus a host of other more mundane topics. He is the only three-time winner of the Writer's Digest Book Award, having won first prize twice for fiction and once for nonfiction, and he has also won First Prize for Visionary Fiction from Independent Publisher and First Prize for Nonfiction from USA Book News.Guest Info:Website: shmartin.comFacebook: @shmbooksLinkedIN: stephen-hawley-martin-82a62b4Find his books: amazon.com/Stephen-Hawley-Martin/e/B0034O4VPY/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0Skeptic Metaphysician Info:Facebook: @TheSkepticMetaphysicianIG: SkepticMetaphysician_Podcast
This week, the cast tackles COVID (literally), FG2 eats cereal and hates living things, DPJ wears a t-shirt and discusses the Chronicles of Higher Ed, and FG1 and FG2 share an affinity for Thanksgiving leftover sandwiches. This week Steve talks with Casey Fatchett of the Nerdy Photographer. They talk a lot about Casey's podcast and how he makes it. They also talk about his Heiland 3-Cell Flash Gun. Look it's a pretty tangent heavy episode where Casey mostly entertains Steve with stories about being an actor. He was up for a roll in Vanilla Sky and he was up to do the voice of the Geico Gecko, and he shares with Steve why he didn't get those parts. It's all interlaced with chat about photography and the need for self-care so you don't die shooting weddings. Beer Talk: Casey - 90/~ Wee Heavy from Belhaven Brewery and also some scotch. Steve - Moon Rambler IPA from Founders Brewing Co. Q&A: If I roll a critical fail while shooting a wedding that's making everyone roll to determine how well they'll do (they love DnD)... do I have to critically fail? Should I ask clients if I can bring my own weed to smoke while shooting their weddings since my clients stopped sharing their joints during the pandemic? What sort of wrap can I put on my camera body that looks professional but still shows off my inner nerd? (I would consider anything Doctor Who, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Star Gate or Farscape related, no Star Wars please) How can I get a client to stop leaving gross emoji memos on venmo when I sell them stuff? My friends think this guy is paying me for sex because it's all eggplant gush or peach gush every time I make a sale to him. In the ninth part of his mini-series entitled 'Strictly Speaking', Kevin invites you into the conversation around some of the greatest dances, partners and moments throughout his Strictly Come Dancing journey! This week, Kevin talks to fellow Strictly professional, Janette Manrara, about her incredible run of success in the 2014 series of the show, in which she was partnered with Eastenders star, Jake Wood! You can follow along with Janette and Jake's story by watching each dance using the links provided in the show notes of this episode! KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes the preconceptions of not just the celebrity, but the image they generally portray on screens, is taken into account when selecting music and performance concepts. The job of a professional is not just to choreograph the dances, but also to investigate and familiarise themselves with their partner, exploring the many different ways in which their image can be matched, or indeed subverted, against audience expectations. There's a delicate balancing act between inspiring your partner and instructing them to the point of fatigue and disillusionment. Being a dancer and being a mentor are two very distinct arts. By the time the halfway mark arrives in a series, there's a sense that people have selected their favourites, and will continue to vote for them. Therefore it's important to mark yourself out in the first half of the series. BEST MOMENTS 'What?! Where do all those wacky ideas come from...two squirrels high-fiving each other after a car barely misses running them over, the Hump Day Camel walking around the office, the Geico Gecko spouting queries with an English accent, an offended Caveman sulking or a pig in a blanket watching a football game? Listen to Our Town host Andy Ockershausen ask these very same questions of GEICO’s VIce President of Marketing Ted Ward. Ted says "you should see the ideas that never make it off the desk, we never discourage our agency from presenting the wildest things!” Consistency, continuity, the boss’s wife and a crazy sense of humor has helped keep GEICO in the top two rankings of insurance companies in the country for the past 20 years. Geico has had the same message for decades, “15 minutes will save you 15% on auto insurance,” they have also had the same advertising agency for decades, the same marketing staff and management for decades. Ted says that there might be a message in there, that longevity and a good branding message is the secret to their success. The early years of his career primed him for these experiences, Ted graduated from University of Virginia with a BA and got his Master’s Degree from William and Mary, then came to Washington to work for some of the top agencies in town before landing his dream job at GEICO. We hope you enjoy listening to Ted discuss his perspective about Our Town with host Andy Ockershausen.
