In part two of our exploration of the parasites of the bird world we meet the brood parasites: the birds that lay their eggs in other birds' nests. They are the dead-beat parents who can't be bothered raising their own young. But while we might think of these birds as the lowest of cheats, when we dig further we discover that being a freeloader isn't as easy as it seems. They have evolved a range of impressive traits that make them successful birds. So join me today to learn about Cuckoos and their other parasitic kin.To support Bird of the Week and gain access to our second podcast, What's up with that's Bird's Name? click on through to Patreon: www.patreon.com/birdoftheweekWant birds in your inbox? Friday 17th June 2022 The positive reaction to yesterday's FOMC market was short lived, with a much softer US dollar this morning and big falls in equity markets. NAB's David de Garis says some of the uncertainty comes from a surprise decision by the Swiss National Bank to lift interest rates for the first time in 17 years – and not by a little bit, but by 50 basis points. It's unsettling for those who assumed they'd wait for the ECB before reacting. By comparison, the Bank of England went for a 25 basis point rise, exactly as expected, but suggesting they will act forcefully, in necessary. Just not yet. Data overnight was largely second tier, but none of it was particularly encouraging. We also take a quick look at yesterday's Australian employment numbers too.

This week, guests include Sukriti and Prakriti Kakar, the singing twins behind the brand new track "Sudhar Ja". Plus the boys talk all things from cow dating apps to mattresses.
The kinetic game of bird nest building! Here's what we thought.
What kind of cuck keeps his eggs right out there in the open? How much of a cuck do you have to be to let your wife's son play with a bunch of plastic, angular toys? All these questions and more are answered in this cuck-themed episode of Board Game Royale, our tabletop gaming debate-cast. Of all the ways to pronounce Go Cuckoo, we definitely chose the worst. But the egg-hoarding beta-males don't up the entire 17-and-a-bit minutes. Beasts of Balance charge in, showing of their weighty, tech-infused, Kickstarted goodness and leaving with your wife. You can find bestplay.co on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook!
It's a bit of a Bristol special this episode, as Alix Briskham (@EruditeWolf), Kris Darby (@DigitalStrider), and Peter Willington (@XeroXeroXero) talk about their ultra geeky day out in the South West. They take in all the best geek haunts in the city, including Excelsior, 8Bit Planet, Forbidden Planet, and Chance & Counters. Naturally, tons of board games got played, including Go Cuckoo!, Marrying Mr. Darcy, Sheriff of Nottingham, Obama Llama, Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space, and Mysterium. Plus there's talk about ghosts, the best cartoon food, and the importance of a good breakfast - which apparently shouldn't include a "non-newtonian version of bacon". By the way, if you like what we're upto and think we should get a shiny award for it, then we'd love for you to vote for us in the British Podcast Awards. You've got until 28th April to lend us your support, by visiting - https://www.britishpodcastawards.com/vote Finally: a quick apology to anyone who got spammed by our podcast feed over the last few days. Totally not our fault, actually an issue with our podcast hosting service, but still a little bit annoying for you we're sure, so thanks for your patience!
