EPISODE 29 - “Jan Sterling: Old Hollywood Star of the Month” - 04/01/2024 Our “Star of the Month” is the fabulous JAN STERLING, who was married to our March “Star of the Month,” PAUL DOUGLAS. Blonde, beautiful, and often deadly on screen, Sterling started in theatre, but made a name for herself portraying tough dames, femme fatales, and sexy seductresses in films such as “Caged,” “Ace In the Hole” and “The High and the Mighty.” However, her upbringing was quite different from these wayward women she played so convincingly; she was actually from a very wealthy and prominent family. She had a stellar career, but many heartbreaks off camera. This week, we discuss the life and career of this most memorable lady.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Jan Sterling: Everything You Need To Know (2014), by Billy Vasquez; The Encyclopedia of Film Actors (2003), by Barry Monush; The Illustrated Who's Who of the Cinema (1983), by Ann Lloyd and Graham Fuller; Quinlan's Illustrated Registry of Film Stars (1986), by David Quinlan; “Jan Sterling, 82, Blonde Actress Who Made Film Noir A Specialty” Obituary, March 29, 2004, The New York Times; IMDBPro.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Tycoon (1947), starring John Wayne, Laaine Day, and Anthony Quinn; Johnny Belinda (1948), starring Jane Wyman, Lew Ayres, and Agnes Moorhead; Caged (1950), starring Eleanor Parker, Agnes Moorhead, and Faye Emerson; Appointment With Danger (1950), starring Robert Walker and Joan Leslie; The Mating Season (1950), starring Gene Tierney, John Lund, and Thelma Ritter; Ace In The Hole (1951), starring Kirk Douglas; Rhubarb (1951), starring Ray Miland; Flesh and Fury (1952), starring Tony Curtis; Sky Full of Moon (1952), starring  Split Second (1953), starring Stephen McNally; Pony Express (1953), starring Charlton Heston and Rhonda Fleming; The Vanquished (1953), starring John Payne and Coleen Gray; Alaska Seas (1954), starring Robert Ryan; The High and the Mighty (19543), starring John Wayne, Robert Stack, Claire Trevor, and Laraine Day; Woman's Prison (1955), starring Ida Lupino, Pyllis Thaxter, Audrey Totter, and Howard Duff; Female on the Beach (1955), starring Joan Crawford and Jeff Chandler; The Harder They Fall (1956), starring Humphrey Bogart and Rod Steiger; 1984 (1956), starring Edmond O'Brien and Michael Redgrave; The Female Animal (1958), starring Hedy Lamar, Jane Powell, and George Nader; Kathy O (1958), starring Dan Duryea and Patty McCormick; High School Confidential (1958), starring Russ Tamblyn and Mamie Van Doren; Love In A Goldfish Bowl (1961), staring Fabian, Tommy Sands, and Majel Barrett; The Incident (1967), Starring Martin Sheen, Beau Bridges, and Tony Musante;  The Minx (1969), starring Robert Roden and Shirley Parker; First Monday in October (1981), Starring Walter Matthau and Jill Clayburgh; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Felienne Hermans is a middle school teacher one day a week, and college professor four days a week. She created a natural language programming tool in Dutch and English. After she released Hedy as open source, it became popular in many places and now has been translated into 50 languages and is spreading throughout the world. Hedy is a fantastic way to teach computational thinking and programming in an easy text-based way as students create flowers, music, and their own programs with the tool. Named after Hedy Lamar, both a movie star and electrical engineer who created a method used in today's wifi routers, let's talk about how every school can teach programming to kids in their native language and how teachers -- even those with no coding experience -- can get started! As we discuss people like Henrietta Lacks, Vasili Arkhipov, Ljubo Čupić, Milovan Đilas, and Hedy Lamar and their selfless acts of courage in events like World War II, the American Revolution, and the Battle of Warsaw, and contributions to inventions that shaped the World we know today. Have you ever heard of a woman named Rosalind Franklin?...probably not, but you can draw a line from today's covid vaccines all the way back to her in the 1950s...she conducted some serious research into the makeup of rna molecules... Rosalind also did some groundbreaking research into the structure of DNA molecules...without her, Jim Watson and Francis Crick may not have discovered how DNA was constructed...they'd go on to win the Nobel prize in 1962...was Rosalind ever given the credit she deserved?...no... What about grace hopper?...ring any bells?...back in the 1940s, lieutenant Grace Hopper invented some computer programming techniques used by the army during World War II…this was the basis of Cobol, the compute language still used by business, finance, and administrative software today... Let's try Susan Kare...no?...she's the one who came up with the trash can icon and the command key on mac computers...she was integral to making the mac operating system as user-friendly as possible... Okay, here's a name you may know: Hedy Lamar...famous actress from old Hollywood in the 30s and 40s and one-time date of Howard Hughes, right?...but she also worked with a guy named George Antheil to come up with a radio “frequency hopping” technology that made today's Wi-Fi, cellular phones, Bluetooth, and gps communications possible...in fact, some call Hedy Lamar “the mother of Wi-Fi”...but does she get the appropriate credit for that?...nope... Those are just a few unsung heroines of technology...their work changed the world...and there are so many more in other fields, too...back in the late 1800s, Nellie Bly became the first investigative female journalist...effa Manley was the first woman to own a sports team...that was back in the 1930s...Beulah Henry was nicknamed “Lady Edison” because she was such a prolific inventor... And while we all know about Joan of Arc, what about Matilda of Tuscany?...she had a 40-year military career who successfully led troops against the Holy Roman Emperor again and again almost a thousand years ago...these are just a few unsung heroines from history... There are similar stories from the world of music: women who changed so much but have been given so little credit...let's see if we can't do a little bit to fix that... He has the typical problems in his life – never can find a girlfriend who appreciates him and always at odds financially. But he lives, breathes and exists for everything film, his heart beats at 24 frames per second. He's an expert in film #history as well and a stickler for detail. What better way to start the series off with the very pioneer of modern communication systems, the mother of modern WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS: Hedy Lamarr!

Who is smart, capable, wise, and loyal; and what works and what doesn't - based on past experience and generalization, you might guess. Our brains use generalization and stereotypes for a reason. These can be very helpful in guiding us through our lives. Our brains recognize patterns and help us make snap decisions and judgments constantly, sometimes without even realizing it. Best be careful not to allow quick assumptions to keep you from seeing what is really there – right in front of you. Assumptions and stereotypes are often tragically wrong. So, keep your eyes open or you'll miss the awesome truth right in front of you.A YouTube version of this episode is found at https://youtu.be/AjftmFMeT_0

I talked to Stephen Michael Shearer about his biography on Hedy Lamarr titled Beautiful: The Life Of Hedy Lamarr. Its a really good read. I usually skip a page here and there but I didn't with this book. I was fascinated by her childhood, her life in Vienna, her marriage to the third richest man in Vienna and her story of her escape from him and Vienna. We talked Hedy's six marriages. None lasting or happy. Her incredible inventions and her movie career. They really did not know what to do with her. Of course being so beautiful and aging were weighing large in her mind. People would meet her and say" You WERE so beautiful. She soon took to getting extensive plastic surgery that was not at all flattering. She also started seeing Dr Feelgood for his amazing B vitamin shots (actually meth) She started acting erratically. She shoplifted, and then she moved to Florida and became a recluse, not even letting her children see her. In 1997 she was finally lauded for her inventions. She never got a penny from them. This is a very extensive look into Hedy's life. You can also see Stephen on the new Hedy Movie Bombshell. Its available on Netflix. I want to thank Stephen for being such a great guest. I'm looking forward to talking g to him about other women he wrote about; Gloria Swanson and his friend Patricia Neal. Thanks to the listeners. The Walk-In Closet (Booksparks) Step into a world where glamour, money and family honor – no matter the cost – reign supreme in Abdi Nazemian'sThe Walk-In Closet. Fans of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City and Kevin Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians will love this debut novel from Los Angeles screenwriter Abdi Nazemian (The Quiet, Celeste in the City) about two best friends in Los Angeles juggling a fictional relationship and searching for true love. Hilarious, heartbreaking and edgy, with a shocking twist, The Walk-In Closet provides a glimpse into the lives of the Iranian-American elite. Kara Walker has never found much glamour in her own life, especially not when compared to the life of her best friend Bobby Ebadi. Bobby, along with his sophisticated parents Leila and Hossein, is everything Kara always wanted to be. The trio provides the perfect antidote to what Kara views as the more mundane problems of her girlfriends and her divorced parents. And so when the Ebadis assume that Kara is Bobby's girlfriend, she willingly steps into the role. She enjoys the perks of life in this closet, not only Leila's designer hand-me-downs and free rent, but also the excitement of living life as an Ebadi. As Kara's 30th birthday approaches, Leila and Hossein up the pressure. They are ready for Kara to assume the mantle of the next Mrs. Ebadi, and Bobby seems prepared to give them what they want: the illusion of a traditional home and grandchildren. How far will Kara be willing to go? And will she be willing to pull the Persian rug out from under them when she discovers that her own secret is just one of many lurking inside the Ebadi closet? Abdi Nazemian is the screenwriter of "The Quiet," "Celeste in the City," "Beautiful Girl," and the short film "Revolution," which he also directed. He is an alumnus of the Sundance Writer's Lab, a mentor at the Outfest Screenwriter's Lab, and has taught screenwriting at UCLA Extension. He lives in Los Angeles with his two children, and his dog, Hedy Lamar. Connect with Abdi at abdaddy.com, Facebook.com/AbdiNazemian and on Twitter @Abdaddy.
