David Oyelowo has a favorite phrase from St. Francis of Assisi. “Preach the gospel, and every now and again use words.” You could see why. One of the most remarkably talented film and stage actors working today, he employs words to stunning effect, but it’s between syllables that one sees his real power. There’s something in his being that telegraphs a certain dignity, a deep human awareness and an underlying joy that he seems incapable of turning off, on screen or in person. “He’s kind of an amazing balance of import and also a kind of levity and light,” said J. J. Abrams, producer of Oyelowo’s upcoming film The God Particle. He’s best known for his acclaimed portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, in which his embodiment of a man raised to sainthood status as one also troubled by fear and doubt was praised most widely for its authenticity. That lack of hagiography may be partly due to an outsider’s perspective. Race played a significant, but different role in his life. He was born in London to Nigerian parents who moved the family to Lagos when he was six, and back when he was 14. Comparatively privileged in Nigeria where classmates called him coconut (white inside) and in more humble circumstances in the UK, he never completely fit. He took nothing for granted other than his own self-worth, and the importance of bettering himself. Despite being a hard worker and ambitious, he admits to enrolling in a youth theater program only because a girl he liked invited him. Oyelowo didn’t share his decision to pursue acting with his father (who was thinking along more lawyerly lines) until he’d secured a scholarship to London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He was offered a season with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and in a major landmark for color-blind casting, became the first black actor to play an English king in a major production of Shakespeare. He was soon getting parts in a number of British films and TV series, most famously, officer Danny Hunter in the British TV drama series Spooks (MI-5 to North American audiences). Problem was, given British producers’ fondness for period pieces, he found the choice of interesting roles for black actors if not insulting, at least limiting. When he looked at the careers of his acting heroes – Will Smith, Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington – he realized they were made in Hollywood. So that’s where he went. Catching the eye of major directors like Ava DuVernay and Lee Daniels opened opportunities for more nuanced characters, and recognition. His work in The Butler, Red Tails, Intersteller, and Disney’s Queen of Katwe garnered a wider audience, but his 83-minute masterwork may just be HBO’s Nightingale. Writing about the 2014 film, which essentially starred Oyelowo and a room, The New York Times called his performance nothing less than amazing. “Mr. Oyelowo gives a riveting, disorienting and suspenseful tour of an unraveling mind. The music and cinematography are artful, but the props are mundane: a coffee maker, a mirror, a laptop. Everything is in Mr. Oyelowo’s voice, face and body.” He found time for an all-too-brief return to the stage last year in an “electrifying” Othello opposite Daniel Craig, something we’ll be kicking ourselves for a long time for missing. “Mr. Oyelowo is Olympian in his anguish,” read the review in the Times’ Critics’ Picks. “His Othello is the real thing — a bona fide tragic hero, whose capacity for emotion is way beyond our everyday depths.” Early on in his career, Oyelowo told his agent to put him up only for non-race-specific parts, an edict he worried was naïve when offers were initially slow in coming. But holding steadfast has given him a chance to prove his range. And while he remains adamant about not playing one type of character, he is interested in a recurring character trait. He believes virtue is “something to be celebrated — entertaining, compelling, dramatic.” It’s not something you hear from many actors, and maybe that’s for the best. In the hands of an artist of lesser skill and subtlety, the intent might be noble, but the result one-note or worse, pandering and corny. In Oyelowo’s work, we’re able to look past even the most cynical parts of ourselves, and see something to hope for. In him, we have actor we not only can’t look away from, but simply don’t want to.   Let's just start by being clear, Joi and Ro are always here for a David Oyelowo film (even if they mess up his last name when recording exhausted) and believe folks need to support Don't Let Go.  Don't Let Go is a psychological police procedural (with a side of the supernatural) about an LAPD Detective Jack Radcliff (David Oyelowo) who finds Ashley (Storm Reid), his favorite niece, and her parents murdered in what appears to be a murder/suicide. After finding their bodies, Jack justifiably falls apart and beings to drink his pain away. But just as he settles into wallow in grief, he receives a phone call from a two-weeks-ago Ashley that sets him a mission to rewrite the timeline and save her if he can.  David Oyelowo stars as Jack Radcliff and Storm Reid as his niece Ashely Radcliff in DON’T LET GO Writer/Director Jacob Arron Estes builds this time-bending story on a simple premise...maybe too simple. It's clear relatively early on this story doesn't expect to make you work for it. What elevates this from some of the others in this horror sub-genre is David Oyelowo's rock-solid performance as a cop frantic to save a life. So while the ride doesn't take any unpredictable turns there's plenty to interest you staying until it's over. Oyelowo elevates some pretty basic dialogue (clearly not modified to fit) and adds emotion and intensity.  Don't Let Go Could've Been Totally Gripping Relying on muddy, visuals to support its muted tone does little to enhance the tonal quality of the story but works well as a backdrop to helping audiences to visualize the temporal changes as they occur.  Don't Let Go tells a solid story with some interesting thrills and fun-to-figure-out twists and turns. But, the story needs more layers of professional and personal entanglement. The film needs more from Garret Radcliff's POV (Bryan Tyree Henry). Seeing how he'd got himself tangled up matters. Plus, that visual information tied to Ashley's role could've compensated for some of the weakness in this script.  Brian Tyree Henry and Shinelle Azoroh star as Garret and Susan Radcliff in DON’T LET GO,Credit: Lacey Terrell / Universal Pictures And again, more of the Radcliff family dynamic with Oyelowo at the center might've deepened both the drama and the emotional connection to the characters. Without them, the overall pace tends to drag in places resulting in a, too-long run time.   Never Leave Tools In The Box  The supporting cast lead by Storm Reid's Ashley all step up and bring nuance and angst to otherwise standard characters. Oyelowo and Reid have excellent chemistry. But, under-utilizing great actors like Brian Tyre Henry and Byron Mann stand as seriously missed opportunities. Director Estes leaned heavily on the Bobby character (Mykelit Williamson) to do too much heavy lifting in this plot.  Mykelti Williamson stars as Bobby Owens in DON’T LET GO He could've easily capitalized on the animosity between Oyelowo's character and Byron Mann's Detective Lee, to add mystery to the premise. April Grace stars as Sgt. Julia Rodriguez and Byron Mann as Sgt. Roger Martin in DON’T LET GO Had this story provided details and reasons as to why this pair could connect across space and time, the suspense and sci-fi elements it sorely needed, Don't Let Go may well have given Frequency a run for its money. "Don't Let Go" stars David Oyelowo as an LAPD detective who starts getting phone calls from his niece, played by Storm Reid -- after she and her parents are brutally murdered. Is it about time-travel? Parallel dimensions? God? We talk it out on the new "Low Key."The Blumhouse film, from Jacob Aaron Estes, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival under the original name "Relive." It quickly sets up the plot before taking us through a series of twists that challenge everything you thought you knew about cell phone conversations between the living and the dead.Is it a time-travel film? A story of crossed realities? We spend this episode puzzling it out, while praising the work of Reid and Oyelowo. We also talk about how Estes and Oyelowo, a producer on the film, changes the setting from a farm in Ohio to the streets of Los Angeles, an especially intense scene late in the film, and the Zodiac killer. Here are a few of our topics, with time stamps:2:30: "I don't know if it's a time-travel movie, I don't know if it's a movie about parallel universes, I don't know if it's a movie where when you die you don't really die you're just transported to another world where you're actually living."6:05: Has there been another movie quite like "Don't Let Go"?11:30: Go watch "Jacob's Ladder"16:30: “Hitman” is hard17:37: This movie was originally set on a farm in Ohio with a bunch of white people18:45: Props, Blumhouse24:05: If someone was pointing a gun at you, would you rather run or ride a bike to escape?28:35: The man-in-a-horror-movie dilemmaIf you like us, please subscribe. Leaving that aspect unexplained undercut the suspense a bit and left parts of the story sorely underdeveloped. It's not a fatal flaw but it does disappoint.  Don't Let Go is an interesting time-thriller with a workable story (just don't think too hard) with some emotional beats that will pull you in and keep you watching.  Ro and Joi agree this film would've been better served by muddying the waters in their spoiler-free discussion of Don't Let Go. Oyelowo talks about his love of acting, being nearly killed by Tom Cruise in a car and his terrific bit part on HBO's the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency. Then, Heather Graham. You probably know her for her iconic roles in Boogie Nights, Swingers, Drugstore Cowboy and more. These days she's working behind the camera. She directed and wrote Half Magic - a comedy about love, sexism, spirituality, and Hollywood. Finally, for this week's outshot: need a gritty detective movie with heart? The surprise third installment of JJ Abrams' Cloverfield-verse, which dropped on Super Bowl Sunday on Netflix, is a cautionary tale that somewhat ties together the previous films in the series, Cloverfield (2008) and 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016). Even against a backdrop that includes a global energy crisis and tinkering with the multiverse with an out-of-this-world particle accelerator, the film's strength lies in its impressive cast and diverse characters. The Cloverfield Paradox stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Brühl, Zhang Ziyi, David Oyelowo, Elizabeth Debicki and more.
