I've been following Matt's journey for a few years now, and really appreciate his approach to life. Matt is not a Dad, and he'll be the first to tell you that he doesn't want to be one, but I think that we can gain a ton of valuable insight from some of Matt's philosophies around life. Matt lost his Dad suddenly to cancer, and it has played a major role in how he has shaped his life. From that experience, Matt has vowed to live his life on his terms, understanding how precious it actually is and how none of us are getting out alive. I just absolutely love the clarity around life that Matt has and his attitude is infectious and inspires others to go out and live their dreams. Matt Vincent is a traveling strength athlete, two-time Highland Games World Champion, and founder of HVIII Brand Goods. Through his travels, Matt was lucky enough to spend time with exceptional people who were chasing strength, fulfillment, and personal growth in every imaginable way. Matt chronicles his travels and conversations with people in the strength game and beyond on his podcast UMSO. In this episode of the Dad Edge Podcast, the host Larry and guest Matt discuss the limitations of text-based communication, particularly in the age of remote work and virtual meetings. They emphasize the importance of non-verbal cues, empathy, tone, and context in effective communication. They share personal experiences and strategies for avoiding misinterpretation by using audio or video messages instead of relying solely on text. The hosts express concerns about the potential loss of these essential elements in communication as society continues to prioritize text-based communication. The conversation highlights the need to consider how messages can be interpreted differently and the importance of using non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions and voice tone, to convey meaning accurately. They share instances where written messages were perceived as angry or confrontational, even though that was not the intention. They emphasize that tone and context can easily be lost in text, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts. It emphasizes the limitations of text-based communication and the potential for misunderstandings and misinterpretations. Matt acknowledges that there are lessons to be learned from following the path set by others, but they emphasize the importance of finding their own path. Choosing one's own path is a personal and transformative journey. It requires self-discovery, self-acceptance, and the courage to pursue one's passions and interests. It may involve breaking away from societal expectations or familial pressures. However, with the right support system and a belief in one's own abilities, individuals can find fulfillment and success in their chosen paths. By triggering awareness and breaking free from societal expectations, individuals can find fulfillment and success in their chosen endeavors. www.1stphorm.com/dadedge www.thedadedge.com/436 www.notdeadyet.com

There are certain people that have a personality that absolutely fill the room. That's the case with Dan McKim! During this episode, Hutch interviews 5X Highland Games World Champion, Dan McKim. While they. spend some time discussing his athletic achievements, it becomes very clear that Dan is far more than an athlete; Dan is a Christ follower, husband, father of 5 boys, employee, and creative communication artist!Notice what is first in the list of who Dan is - Christ Follower. This is the critical part of the conversation and the message for all Strong Dads to understand. Until you recognize what it means to be a Christ follower first and foremost, all other identities are fleeting. They simply will not be enough to sustain you. Hutch's conversation with Dan is fun and candid. Dan has a contagious smile and laugh that brings you right into the genuine person that he is. How can I describe Matt Vincent? While he's crazy strong and built his reputation on being a Highland Games World Champion, he's evolved. This is what we love so much about Matt. He's an adventurer, a philosopher, and ever curious. Disproving the moniker of “meathead”, Matt's always looking for ways to expand his mind and body in the most accessible ways. Get to know him in this week's chat. A conversation between John Welbourn and Matt Vincent is like a confusing, yet entertaining, web of deep thoughts, conspiracy theories, some legitimate strength and conditioning advice, and personal confessions. This week I had the chance to catch up with multiple time Highland Games World Champion Daniel McKim. In this candid and humorous interview, Dan and I spoke at great length about: 1. How he began throwing in high school 2. Making the transition to collegiate thrower 3. Not living up to expectations as a collegiate thrower (multiple nationals trips with one All-American award earned) 4. Transitioning to Highland Games 5. Realizing I might be good at this 6. How an injury helped him focus more on competition 7. What it is like to trade world championships with Matt Vincent 8. Throwing with ghosts 9. His last season as a thrower 10. Advice for new Highland Games athletes 11. Sorinex
Adriane (Blewitt) Wilson graduated from Ashland University (Ashland, Ohio) in 2004 with a degree in Physical Education and Health. Adriane earned 7 NCAA Div II National titles and 6 Runner Up honors. She is the former NCAA Division II record holder in the discus and still owns the national indoor and outdoor shot put NCAA Div II records. As a professional track and field thrower, Adriane competed in three US Olympic Trials ('04, '08, '12) in the shot put. She is the 13th American woman to throw over 60' in the shot put. Adriane also trains for the Scottish Highland Games. She is a five-time Women's World Champion and previously owned two world records in the 28lb. weight for height (19' spinning) and 28lb. weight for distance (53'4”). She is a Level 1 Sports Performance coach for USA Weightlifting and also a Level 1 Coach for USATF and USA Paralympics. In the past, Adriane was an Assistant Track and Field coach for the multi-events and throws and concurrently served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at Tiffin University. Most recently, Adriane has been chosen to coach adapted sport for our wounded, ill, and injured soldiers with Team Army at the Warrior Games ('16, '17, '18) and Team USA for the Invictus Games ('17, '18). She has traveled all over the United States and internationally coaching Track and Field and Para Powerlifting.
Today's guest is larger than life. Daniel McKim is a husband, father, and outdoorsman. He is a Highland Games World Champion and the world record holder for the hammer throw. From his funny Instagram post to the weight he lifts, to the life he leads as a husband and father, Dan is an amazing and inspiring man. I had known of him through the magical world of the interwebs. But when we met at a National Strength and Conditioning Coaches meeting, standing at 6'5' and a solid 300 pounds, he was hard to miss. We talk about training as a professional athlete with a family while working a full-time job for Sorinex and still finding the time and ways to get in the wilderness. Along with great training advice, he gives some great insights into getting kids involved in exercise and the outdoors. There's no exact amount of hard work that will guarantee success. Find out what good can come from diving into yourself to uncover and heal from your own demons. "Bring the fight; don't sit & wait for it to come to you. Be on the offense of strategy because today's an opportunity. We're not just surviving; we're going to thrive." - Matt Vincent @matSOawesome of HVIII Brand Goods on @WellnessForce Radio episode 240 wellnessforce.com/240 Click here to learn more about and buy from HVIII Brand Goods HVIII (sound it out: H+Roman Numeral 'VIII') is a strong term that many will find negative. Good. So do I. I refuse to not get better. It is not an option. I will make the sacrifices necessary to be the best. This attack on the self is necessary because if I don’t train every day with the intention of destroying the old me, then I’m missing something. This is the fire I feel, that I want you to feel. This is the fire, the hate, the motivation for improvement. HVIII Brand Goods is a lifestyle brand that is based on a very simple philosophy: Turn negativity into positive results. Everyone has doubts, everyone worries about just how much they can accomplish. Don't hide from those thoughts; let them drive you. Find adventure, chase strength, build something. Whatever you choose to do, put your whole self into it and enjoy yourself in the process. The process is everything. At HVIII Brand Goods, we make apparel and accessories with an emphasis on style and quality. Every item we create starts with a basic idea: Is this something we would want for ourselves? If the answer is 'yes' then we obsess over getting it just right so we can share it with you. Carrying the HVIII Brand Goods message on your body is a statement of support, and we take that seriously. Loyalty above all. You deserve our best, and we attack every day with the purpose of giving it to you. Listen To Episode 240 As Matt Vincent Uncovers: How he created the philosophy of HVIII Brand Goods: "The spirit of self-improvement through self-loathing." This renewal of reconnecting with others and really looking for a tribe through groups like CrossFit. The power of going outside of your own suffering and still be there for your team so you can win together. His morning routine being relaxed vs. getting fired up with exercise, movement, cold tub, and coffee. What he learned from the process he went through when his dad passed away from pancreatic cancer. What the term 'hate' means to him and why he finds it so motivating. How he stays authentic in his social media platforms, videos, and the HVIII brand. His past experience working in sales and what he took away from it. Levels of consciousness: How much he has grown since he worked in sales to beginning HVIII. What he's learned about himself, success, and hard work by completing tasks by himself compared to with his team. Why pain and trauma are not a competition and we're all dealing with our own issues at our own full capacity. How he balances all aspects of his health, business, and relationships. What he does when finds he's out of balance with work and personal relationships. The inner work he did before he met his wife and how they've both grown since then. How he defines himself and stays authentic to who he is. What the Highland Games is and what he loves the most about throwing and being an athlete. His experience with injuries and what he went through mentally during some of the toughest moments of his throwing career. Where he's planning for his company, HVIII Brand Goods, to go in the future. The power of saying 'no' to what you don't want to do and focusing on getting to do what you love. The most he's learned from his wife when it comes to strength training and mindset. Power Quotes From The Show "I'm not obligated to train; I get to train. You can't outsource progress. If you want to become stronger, more fit, and healthy, all of that takes time and you get to put the time into it."- Matt Vincent @matSOawesome on @WellnessForce Radio episode 240 wellnessforce.com/240 "No one owes you success; the universe doesn't care. If this is what you want, you do it but you do it for yourself and nobody else. Quit focusing on the mindset of, 'If I just get there, all of this will be okay,' because there is no 'there;' it's all just a journey and a process. So, learn to live in that because that's where we are now." - Matt Vincent "'At some point, we have to realize that pain and trauma are not a competition.' Everyone is dealing at 100% all the time for them. People are just doing the best they can with the tools they're given." - Matt Vincent quoting David Choe. "Knowing yourself is so important. You have to dive into the dark parts of yourself. Pretending they don't exist doesn't make them not exist. If you've got darkness, that's okay. You don't get to experience the good without the bad." - Matt Vincent "I don't want me to care more about your success than you do. That can't work; you have to care and be the one to instill it in you that this is the standard, this is the line that we hold, and this is non-negotiable. You have to hate yourself enough to do the work. Good enough isn't good enough today. Perform when it counts and like anything else, that's a knife that can be sharpened." - Matt Vincent " 'Comparison is the thief of joy.' Own your work and do it for you. If you're doing it for someone else, that's not sustainable either." - Matt Vincent Links From Today's Show Matt Vincent Instagram Twitter YouTube HVIII Brand Goods Facebook Twitter Instagram UMSO Podcast Training Lab by Matt Vincent Spartan Race World Championships Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook - Gary Vaynerchuk Jordan Peterson Alan Watts Carl Jung Brené Brown Joe Rogan Tony Robbins Dana Linn Bailey Kelly Starrett Mark Bell WFR 086 Mark Divine WFR 196 Aubrey Marcus About Matt Vincent Matt Vincent is a traveling strength athlete, two-time Highland Games World Champion, and founder of HVIII Brand Goods. Sorinex's Bert Sorin and Brandon Lilly sit down with 2x Highland Games World Champion and creator of HVIII Brand Goods' Matt Vincent at Sorinex headquarters.
Matt is a traveling strength athlete, two-time Highland Games World Champion, author and host of the UMSO Podcast. He is also the founder of one of the most bad ass clothing and apparel lines around, HVIII Brand Goods. Throughout his travels Matt was able to connect with some exceptional people who were chasing strength, fulfillment and personal development in every way imaginable. These experiences taught him the philosophy of “The HVIII”, which is self-improvement through self-loathing. He learned how to use his hate (for excuses, bullshit stories and mediocrity) as motivation to improve and excel. This idea became the spark for the creation of HVIII Brand Goods and led Matt to become a successful entrepreneur. Hate. It's just another four-letter word. It has a surface-level negative connotation if you let it. Matt Vincent, 2012 and 2014 Highland Games world champion and co-founder of HVIII Brand Goods, unpacks for us how he uses hate to his advantage. With a strong (no pun intended) foundation in field games, Matt has spent the better part of a decade donning a performance-apparel kilt and hurling hundreds of pounds against some of the world's largest and strongest men. But this skill has carried over into much more, Matt and his brother founded HVIII (pronounced "hate") Brand Goods to help others see further into themselves, to do more, be more, demand more from themselves. Matt says it best here: "HVIII... is a strong term that many will find negative. Good. So do I. I refuse to not get better. It is not an option. I will make the sacrifices necessary to be the best. This attack on the self is necessary because if I don’t train everyday with the intention of destroying the old me, then I’m missing something. This is the fire I feel, that I want you to feel. This is the fire, the hate, the motivation for improvement. There is no excuse not to improve yourself. No one gives a shit. People may coddle you, but when you sit alone, you have only yourself to blame. We have all had days when we come up short because we’re unprepared. If you are unprepared, then it is your fault. So take responsibility. There is something you can do about it."

HVIII Brand Creator and 2x Highland Games World Champion, Matt Vincent, joins Chad and Max to discuss his knee injuries, transition away from competitive Highland Games and creating your own brand.
Matt Vincent is one of the most interesting humans I've had the privilege of meeting. He is a 2x Highland Games World Champion, which basically means he's the best in the world at throwing a bunch of heavy shit. One of the biggest takeaways for me out of this interview was the emphasis on staying healthy for his actual sport-throwing. He repeatedly emphasized the fact that the training in the gym is only a small part of his overall training. It is only there to support his technical work with throwing. With that said, he shares how he breaks down the year, what exercises he uses, how he recovers and prevents injury etc. He also goes into how he lost 30+ lbs. of fat and is still hitting PRs in the gym and on the field. When he's not power snatching 330lbs or out training in the field, he enjoys a wide variety of art, craft beer, and even paints his toe-nails. This dude's perspective on life is absolutely inspiring to me. On one hand he is in constant pursuit of excellence in the form of Highland Games' competition. On the flip-side, he has a great ability to balance that with time spent just having fun and enjoying his life. I hope you enjoy the show.
