Send us a Text Message. In this episode of Main Street Moxie, Keith Moon shares stories about his longstanding involvement with Special Olympics, an organization with moxie built into its DNA.Keith's secret moxie sauce is recognizing a need and then finding a way to use his talents and skills to make a difference. He enjoys bringing people and organizations together to accomplish a larger goal.Keith's involvement in Special Olympics began when he read an appeal in the Hartford Courant to raise needed funds for the organization. His response: “I can do that.” Using his position as the boys' swim coach at the Hotchkiss School, he organized a swimathon that raised $4,000. That was 30 years ago, and he's organized one every year since; to date, the Swimathon has raised over $250,000 for Special Olympics. Working with colleagues, students, and the local community, he has expanded the reach of the Swimathon and branched out into athletic competitions in other sports.Keith has remained an enthusiastic supporter of the Special Olympics mission of creating athletic competitions that promote the development of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their inclusion in society. Keith's nine-year tenure on the board of Special Olympics Connecticut has also given him insight into the moxie of the athletes and their families. The athletes' determination, competitive joy, and focus on what they can do–not their limitations–fuel his dedication to the Special Olympians. In 2022, after Russia attacked Ukraine, he helped form a partnership between Special Olympics Connecticut and Special Olympics Slovakia, to create a Dream Day Center for Ukrainian refugee children born with intellectual disabilities and their families. At this year's 30th annual Hotchkiss Swimathon, four Slovakian coaches and four Special Olympics Slovakia athletes will make the swim across Lake Wononscopomuc and back on September 7, 2024.Keith has been an instructor of Russian history and literature at the Hotchkiss School since 1989 and a volunteer instructor in those subjects for Noble Horizons Retirement Community since 2012. In 2019, he was awarded the school's Lufkin Prize, which honors faculty for their excellence, commitment, moral leadership, and service to the community. Are traditional schools equipped to prepare our children for a rapidly evolving world? In the latest episode of the Better Learning podcast, Tom Woelper and John Camp delve into a fascinating conversation about the New England Innovation Academy (NIA), an independent school that's challenging the status quo of education. With backgrounds deeply rooted in both education and entrepreneurship, Woelper and Camp built NIA and are redefining the educational landscape. NIA isn't just another school; it's a bold experiment in fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and human-centered design. But what sets it apart from traditional models? And how does it equip students with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an uncertain future? Discover how the school's physical space mirrors its innovative philosophy, fostering collaboration and a sense of belonging among students. However, this journey isn't without its challenges. Woelper and Camp candidly discuss the hurdles of moving away from traditional grading systems and the impact of college admissions on education today. With insights from over 25 years of teaching experience, Camp brings a unique perspective to the table, emphasizing the importance of teaching what cannot be Googled and fostering a culture of hard work. Meanwhile, Woelper's extensive career in independent education shines through, showcasing his dedication to reshaping the educational landscape and serving as a beacon for innovation in schools.   Takeaways The New England Innovation Academy is an independent school that focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship, and human-centered design. The school aims to prepare students for a rapidly changing world by teaching empathy and fostering an innovator and entrepreneur mindset. The founders of the school have backgrounds in education and entrepreneurship and wanted to create a school that was different from traditional models. The physical space of the school reflects its innovative approach, with open, collaborative areas and a sense of belonging and togetherness. The target market for the school includes families who are dissatisfied with traditional education and want a more innovative and flexible approach. Nia Innovation Academy follows a human-centered approach to education, focusing on integrated learning and project-based learning. The school offers flexibility in scheduling and allows for personalized learning experiences. NIA uses a competency-based assessment system that de-emphasizes grades and focuses on skills and competencies. The college admission process still heavily influences education, but colleges are showing interest in innovative approaches to learning. There is a need for a shift in the K-12 education system to prioritize holistic development and individual strengths rather than solely focusing on grades and college admissions.     Camp (as he goes by), has been teaching in independent schools for over 25 years. His experience includes English and writing classes as well as interdisciplinary courses such as “The Art and Physics of Time Travel.” At St. Mark's School, which bestowed him with The Trustees Chair and the Kidder Faculty Prize, Camp served as the Director of Experiential Learning and Associate Director of The Center of Innovation in Teaching and Learning. Tom has had a distinguished 31-year career in independent education, most recently serving as the Head of School of Far Hills Country Day School in Far Hills, New Jersey. Prior to his tenure at Far Hills, Tom served as the Assistant Head of School and Dean of Academic Life and taught history during his 14 years at The Hotchkiss School. Tom began his career in independent school education as a teaching intern at Groton School and then as a history teacher and Class Dean at The Taft School.     New England Innovation Academy https://neiacademy.org/   Follow on Tom Woelpher on Social Media: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/j-thomas-woelper-a9009717 Twitter: https://twitter.com/twoelper   Follow on Camp on Social Media: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/campsm/   Learn more about creating better learning environments at www.Kay-Twelve.com. Min Jin Lee could be considered an exemplar of the old adage “slow and steady wins the race.” The author's bestselling 2017 novel Pachinko—a National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestseller that was adapted into a television series for Apple TV+ in 2022—took 30 years to write from its inception as a short story. Her debut novel, Free Food for Millionaires (2007), took five years. These extensive periods of time become understandable, or even seem scant, within the sprawling, multigenerational contexts of her novels—Pachinko spans almost a century—into which she pours deep anthropological, sociological, and journalistic research. Lee is also the editor of the just-published The Best American Short Stories 2023 (Mariner Books) anthology, and she's currently at work on American Hagwon, the third novel in her diasporic trilogy. On this episode, she talks about the complex role of time in Pachinko, her miraculous recovery from chronic liver disease, and why she likens short-story writing to polishing diamonds.Special thanks to our Season 8 sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes: [00:25] Min Jin Lee[03:39] Viet Thanh Nguyen[06:08] Free Food for Millionaires[06:10] Pachinko[06:19] The Best American Short Stories 2023[08:08] Amy Tan[08:09] Salman Rushdie[09:36] “Bread and Butter”[09:37] “Motherland”[09:38] “The Best Girls”[10:04] William Trevor[10:06] Alice Munro[12:45] Yale University[17:23] Harvard Business School[17:34] Fashion Institute of Technology[47:37] Queens Public Library in Elmhurst[49:21] The Bronx High School of Science[49:32] The Hotchkiss School[49:33] Phillips Exeter Academy[58:46] American Hagwon[01:03:33] Stoner by John Williams

Lisanne Norman entered the tech field as a UX researcher in 2015 and quickly advanced to lead researcher at Dell, then Visa. She founded Black UX Austin and was the UX lead researcher at Gusto. And then she left in 2022. Because she had had enough. And because she wanted to make a difference. She is now co-director of DEI at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut. In today's interview, Lisanne shares her career journey and the tools she acquired in various positions along the way. We get a glimpse of what it's like to be a Black woman in tech. We also get a hint at what it might take to keep a Black woman (or other individuals from marginalized groups) in the space. We hear of the microaggressions that can and do occur in the workplace, and Lisanne helps us imagine the exhaustion of functioning in such an environment day after day. She has worked in established, entrenched cultures and in young, seemingly flexible startups, and she found that both environments are lacking in their efforts to bring marginalized people groups to the table. Her talk is “Why I Left Research.” What you'll learn from this episode: • What the UX research world looks like from a Black woman's point of view • The types of microaggressions Lisanne endured in the workplace and public places like airports • Why being a marginalized voice at work – even in a young, flexible culture – can be exhausting • The difference between culture-fit and culture-add • What companies need to do to attract and retain BIPOC employees – and why it's worth the effort to do so Quick Reference Guide • [00:15] Introduction of Lisanne • [01:38] Lisanne explains how she stumbled upon research as a possible career and found herself working for Dell • [05:19] Lisanne's time working directly with Dell as part of their design team and her later transition to Visa • [12:40] Lisanne explains the frustrations she endured at Visa and her switch to a young e-commerce company • [19:13] Feeling weighed down by microaggressions, keeping notes, and educating those who should know better • [21:13] Covid, taking a break, Black UX Austin, Gusto, and George Floyd • [27:55] BREAK: Books recently published by Rosenfeld Media • [30:08] On what it would take for Lisanne to get back into UX research • [35:01] On the potential of learning from past modules of successful “adding” • [37:41] Lisanne's gift to our listeners: POCIT (People of Color in Tech)

Covid-19 and its economic effects are not going away anytime soon. They will reconfigure our system, ranging from geopolitical relations to the power of national governments, from company accounts to working patterns. Karina Robinson analyses the new paradigm and figures out what this means for the City and Boards Of Directors. Speaker: Karina Robinson is the CEO of Robinson Hambro Ltd, a CEO/Chairman Advisory and Board headhunting boutique set up with co-founder Rupert Hambro nine years ago. Karina is a Governor of the London School of Economics (LSE) and a member of the Finance Committee at a time of profound change for the university sector. In 2020 she became Co-Founder of The Inclusion Initiative, a new institute at the LSE that uses behavioural science to improve D&I outcomes, and which is partnering with City firms. She is Master of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers (WCIB), an influential City livery company. She helped transform the Lord Mayor's Appeal by, most notably, setting up and chairing the Advisory Board to the Lord Mayor's Appeal, which includes the CEOs and Chairs of major City firms. She also writes Karina's Column on a wide array of subjects, from mental health to geopolitics to future trends. She is a frequent speaker, interviewer and panellist. Communication is her forte. Prior to Robinson Hambro, she had a successful 30- year career as a senior journalist covering international finance and politics. She was Senior Editor of The Banker, the FT's banking magazine, the International Herald Tribune's Banking Columnist, and Political & Economic Correspondent at Bloomberg, among other roles. Karina began her career at merchant bank Morgan Grenfell as the Spanish Equity Analyst. She was educated in Madrid, at the Hotchkiss School in the US and at the London School of Economics where she studied economics and international relations. She is fluent in four languages.
