Could the ocean's murky depths be hiding artifacts of advanced ancient civilizations or evidence of extraterrestrial visitations? Open your mind to the enigmatic wonders that are possibly submerges beneath the waves. We journey to unravel the secrets of the Baltic Sea Anomaly, discovered in 2011 by marine geologists Peter Lindberg and Dennis Ashberg, and compare it to other mysterious underwater features, like the Yonaguni Monument and the Bimini Road. Strap in for a voyage through history and speculation, where formations found on the ocean floor spark debates over natural phenomena versus otherworldly creations, and ancient lore intersects with modern UFO sighting. This episode isn't just a dive into the ocean's mysteries; it's an excavation of the truth, as we examine behind the Smithsonian Institute's rumored concealment of discoveries that could rewrite history. Nordic, Celtic, and Baltic mythologies speak of deities traversing the skies in celestial chariots. Could these myths preserve memories of historical events, such as aerial conflicts, that left behind artifacts like the Baltic Sea Anomaly? Our conversation spans to the awe-inspiring and the controversial, from considering the existence of secret underwater bases to the eerie 1997 "bloop" detected by naval research hydrophones throughout the South Pacific. From there, we ponder the existence alien craft capable of not only of interstellar travel, but also of underwater excursion. This notion is found to be bolstered by modern-day reports of phenomena, such as the Tic-Tac UFO and unidentified submersible objects. Findings that are as profound as they are perplexing are hidden in the depths of our planet's most formidable frontier. We ask the questions about such clues that lead to a better understanding of civilizations, both past and present.Genes, Giants, Monsters and Men," The Surviving Elites of the Cosmic War and Their Hidden Agenda. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.28.551047v1?rss=1 Authors: Catal, Y., Wolman, A., Abbasi, S., Northoff, G. Abstract: The brain's intrinsic timescales are organized in a hierarchy with shorter timescales in sensory regions and longer ones in associative regions. This timescale hierarchy overlaps with the timing demands of sensory information. Our question was how does this timescale hierarchy affect information transfer. We used a model of the timescale hierarchy based on connected excitatory and inhibitory populations across the cortex. We found that a hierarchy of information transfer follows the hierarchy of timescales with higher information transfer in sensory areas while it is lower in associative regions. Probing the effect of changes in timescale hierarchy on information transfer, we changed various model parameters which all, through, the loss of hierarchy, induced increased information transfer. Finally, the steepness of the timescale hierarchy relates negatively to total information transfer. Human MEG data confirmed our results. In sum, we demonstrate a key role of the brain's timescale hierarchy in mediating information transfer. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.06.19.161240v1?rss=1 Authors: Meserve, J. H., Nelson, J. C., Marsden, K. C., Hsu, J., Echeverry, F. A., Jain, R. A., Wolman, M. A., Pereda, A. E., Granato, M. Abstract: The acoustic startle response is an evolutionary conserved avoidance behavior. Disruptions in startle behavior, in particular startle magnitude, are a hallmark of several human neurological disorders. While the neural circuitry underlying startle behavior has been studied extensively, the repertoire of genes and genetic pathways that regulate this locomotor behavior has not been explored using an unbiased genetic approach. To identify such genes, we took advantage of the stereotypic startle behavior in zebrafish larvae and performed a forward genetic screen coupled with whole genome analysis. This identified mutants in eight genes critical for startle behavior, including two genes encoding proteins associated with human neurological disorders, Dolichol kinase (Dolk), a broadly expressed regulator of the glycoprotein biosynthesis pathway, and the potassium Shaker-like channel subunit Kv1.1. We demonstrate that Kv1.1 acts independently of supraspinal inputs to regulate locomotion, suggesting its site of action is within spinal circuitry. Moreover, we show that Kv1.1 protein is mis-localized in dolk mutants, suggesting they act in a common genetic pathway to regulate movement magnitude. Combined, our results identify a diverse set of eight genes all associated with human disorders that regulate zebrafish startle behavior and reveal a previously unappreciated role for Dolk and Kv1.1 in regulating movement magnitude via a common genetic pathway. As a youngster growing up in 70s, if I had struggled to retain facts, or to learn a second (more like third) language or did not grasp advance math or failed to finish the exam on time, I would have been lectured or yelled at. In that era, I would been reprehended for not trying hard enough or for not caring enough about my learning. Thankfully, the development in neuroscience and the deeper understanding of psychology of learning has opened our eyes to the possibilities that student's learning difficulties may not stem from his/her stubbornness nor is it an indication of poor character. In the 21st century, if a child has a persistent cold, the parents will take him/her to the doctor without hesitation. But a struggling learners' difficulties often lead to confusion and inconsistent cultural recommendations because the parents are often unsure as to what learning challenges are serious enough to require formal action. On this episode, Dr. Judy Wolman returns to discuss why barriers in learning require specific steps, the benefit of formal evaluation, and how proper investigation clears the way for selecting the right environment for the child to thrive.About Judy WolmanJudy Draisin Wolman is a psychologist in Sandy Springs, Georgia, specializing in psychoeducational evaluations, family therapy regarding child-related issues, and psychotherapy for children and adolescents. She received her Ph.D. in Developmental School Psychology at Georgia State University in December of 1984. No one is free form worrying about their children and their success. From sippy cups, nap times, and play dates, parents move on to worrying about lost papers, missing homework, too much cell-phone use, or not getting a part in a school play. Normal mishaps aside, a struggling child can cause even greater worry. Email exchanges like this one are not uncommon. “Johnny seems to work tremendously hard in school, but he is struggling to get his work done efficiently. I am concerned that he's falling behind, and his effort is not reflected in his test performance. Johnny also seems to struggle in socializing with his peers and he doesn't seem to have any friends. I think Johnny needs help.”At the start of each year, teachers anxiously wait to see what their classes are going to look like and within few weeks the chips begin to fall as they may as the students who are likely to need more individual attention and specific help begin to emerge with their struggles; sometimes subtly and sometimes vividly. Teachers share their concerns with the parents and then the parents begin to worry as they try and make sense of these observations. Parents, teachers, LD specialists, SLPs, and school psychologists begin to begin to put the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together as they sort, assess, and find ways to label these issues to correctly guide their learning journey. What is needed is a clarity that informs the decision about the next step. On this episode, Dr. Judy Wolman, an education psychologist, will discuss the process of evaluating the relationship between the brain and behavior and how that impacts education.About Judy WolmanJudy Draisin Wolman is a psychologist in Sandy Springs, Georgia, specializing in psychoeducational evaluations, family therapy regarding child-related issues, and psychotherapy for children and adolescents. She received her Ph.D. in Developmental School Psychology at Georgia State University in December of 1984. In May 1968, demonstrations at the University of Nanterre, triggered a wave of protests across Paris and elsewhere in France, that have loomed in the imaginations of the Western European left. This month, Juliet talks to Mitchell Abidor, author of May Made Me: An Oral History of the 1968 Uprising in France (https://www.plutobooks.com/9780745336947/may-made-me/) about the relationship between the protests and film: how André Malraux's decision to fire Henri Langlois from the Cinemathèque fed into the insurrection; how far the Provos, Lettrists and Situationists influenced the protests; how the likes of Jean-Luc Godard and Chris Marker changed their practice after May '68; and the feminist and queer filmmakers and groups that emerged in its wake. Featuring an interview with Ricci Wolman, founder and CEO of Written Word Media about the challenge that authors face with the most common questions they often have when first starting out; questions that include the following: How do I get the right people to discover my new book? Where can I find people to review my book on Kindle and the other retail websites? Is there a way for me to increase my visibility and my sales on multiple retail platforms? --------- This episode has been sponsored by Findaway Voices. Findaway Voices provides all the tools that an independent author or small publisher needs in order to get into the digital audiobook market. Check them out at www.starkreflections.ca/findaway. --------- In the interview, Mark and Ricci talk about: How Written Word Media was born out of Ricci's background as a consultant and her desire to help her mother sell a book that she had published The way that Freebooksy was slowly built, using a small curated list of recommended free books (as a platform where Ricci could occasionally slip her book into the mix and help boost sales) The ongoing experimentation and playing that Ricci performed on the Freebooksy brand that helped it to continue to grow into a site where authors asked if they could pay to have their works featured there What each of the current service brands within Written Word Media are used for: Freebooksy – to feature/promote free books Bargainbooksy – featuring discounted books under $5 USD (But books $2.99 and below perform best) Red Feather Romance – both free and discounted/bargain books in the steamy contemporary romance category New in Books – a general promotional tool for newer release exposure rather than for discounted/bargain priced titles. (More of a FULL SERVICE promotion for authors) The importance of reviews to helping to sell a title and the importance of having some reviews on your retail listing for a book The advent of digital audiobooks and the current work that is happening to test out a “new in audiobook” style of notification How Written Word Media adds between 20,000 to 30,000 new readers to their reader pool every month (meaning writers who come back two or three months later to do an additional promotion ends up going to a larger batch of new readers) The over 12 million promotional emails that Written Word Media sent out in the month of December 2017 The critically important value of “HELP THE AUTHOR” that is at the core of Written Word Media Some of the book industry trends from the past year that Ricci is most interested in A bit about the husband/wife team aspect of managing the business as a couple How savvy authors understand that a marketing expense is made up of both dollars spent as well as time spent; and that a lot of things that look to be free might end up costing more in terms of time than originally expected Authors should ask these questions every time they go to take marketing action: What is this costing me in dollars? What is this costing me in time? What results do I think I'm going to get? (And how confident am I in those results?) After the interview, Mark shares details from his own recent experience with booking a Freebooksy promotion for a horror title and outlines the cost and the return on his investment for the promotion. Episode 77: Teen Tour Theatre with Aviva Wolman-Wener Lindsay talks with Aviva Wolman-Wener of Teen Tour Theatre. Aviva has been using Theatrefolk plays for close to ten years. If you tour shows (or are thinking about taking your show on tour) listen in to learn why it's important for students to perform for strangers and to learn the skills of taking a show on the road. Aviva also talks about the necessary skills students need to perform in a touring show, and the top three things a teacher needs to do when planning a tour. Show Notes http://teentourtheatre.com/ Episode Transcript Welcome to TFP, The Theatrefolk Podcast. I am Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello, I hope you're well. Thanks for listening. Today, I'm talking with Aviva Wolman-Wener of Teen Tour Theatre. Now, Aviva is one of our oldest customers. She's been using Theatrefolk plays for close to ten years and she started Teen Tour Theatre because she wanted to think of a way to really push and challenge her acting students, and one of those ways was providing an opportunity to get her kids to perform for audiences other than loved ones, which I think is a pretty unique thing for teens and pre-teens to do. So, if you are a teacher and you're doing a touring show currently with your students, or you're thinking about touring a show, take a seat, have a listen, there's lots a great information here, including the top three things a teacher needs to think about when doing a tour. So, let's get to the interview. Lindsay: Hello everybody! I am here today, I'm very happy to be talking to a long-time Theatrefolk customer, Aviva Wolman-Wener. Hello, Aviva! Aviva: Hi! Lindsay: How are you? Aviva: I'm okay. How are you? Lindsay: I'm awesome. I'm looking out my window at some more snow. I'm sure you have lots of snow where you are in Montreal. Aviva, you run Teen Tour Theatre, yeah? So, we know you because you're generous. How many years have you been using Theatrefolk plays? It's been a while. Aviva: Maybe, like, eight or nine. Maybe more? Lindsay: Yeah, no, I don't know. It's just been one of those things that every year we see that order come through for you and for Teen Tours. So, let's start off with what that is. What is Teen Tour Theatre? Aviva: Teen Tour Theatre is a theatre school slash tour group that I started eleven years ago. I began it because I was teaching at another local school here. I had been teaching for ten years at another school in Montreal and was trying to think of a way to challenge some of my students who had been with me forever. I had kids who were in their late teens and had started with me when they were nine and ten and even younger. And I wanted to think of a way to push them further, especially the ones who wanted to take acting much further. And so, I created two concepts at this other theatre school. One was touring so that they were performing for people other than their loved ones which was a very different experience and trying to create a workshop program for kids who wanted to take it further than just doing theatre for the obvious reasons that we think theatre is phenomenal – like, self-confidence and learning how to handle yourself in any kind of interview situation and learning how to speak in front of people and all of those other things. This was for the kids who were really, really focused on taking theatre to the next level in their life. And so, I did that for a year there. I was really happy with how it went and then decided to launch it as a program that was unique to everything else, and that's how it became Teen Tours. So, basically, the concept of the school is that the older students – and, when I first began, we had only teenagers and I only had two classes and basically those groups, we had our junior tour group and our senior tour group which are the ones you've heard of because those are the ones mostly that I've used the plays f...

Many of us in the western world don’t rely on bills and coins as much as we used to, yet the idea of cash money is still an ever-present constant in our minds. How often have you stopped to consider the idea of what “money” actually is on a larger scale, or where our changing habits could lead us? In his book The End of Money – Counterfeiters, Preachers, Techies, Dreamers, and the Coming Cashless Society (Da Capo Press, 2012), David Wolman examines our commitment to cash, its advantages and drawbacks, how it facilitates crime and poverty, even its health and environmental issues. With an engaging and accessible style he prompts us to rethink the notion of money, how it works, and what forms it could take in the future. Wolman starts with a short history of cash, beginning with the official introduction of paper money to the Chinese monetary system in the 13th century and Marco Polo’s reaction to it 100 years later. Next we follow him around the globe to get a cross-cultural picture of cash today – including explorations of the cultural heritage and emotional value of cash, of an increasing trend in developing countries of people using their cellphones to transfer money to both businesses and family, and of counterfeiting and anti-counterfeiting technology. Along the way he enlists a wide variety of people to help illustrate these concepts: a Georgia pastor who views the end of cash as a sign of the End Times, a convicted counterfeiter (or “Monetary Architect”, depending on who you’re talking to), a coin collector with an ambivalent attitude toward coins, and a British “digital money guru” who views money as a menace. David Wolman is a contributing editor at Wired magazine. You can follow him on Twitter at @DavidWolman. He is, in his own words, a “…guy who’s interested in seemingly small, simple, straightforward topics that in fact, when you put them under the microscope, are anything but simple.” This book is an excellent example of that, and an engrossing read. In our interview he spoke of his year-long experiment to go without using coins or bills at all, the meaning of privacy and security as it relates to money in a digital world, and what he sees as the future of “money”.
