What if you reimagined the norms of your industry? Said no to the conventions that don't work for you and worse, kept your business from being profitable? People will say it can't be done, that the industry model exists for a reason, you'll never get clients, and on and on. But what if breaking out of the mold meant you could actually produce your best work for your clients? There are opportunities to do things differently from how everyone in the industry does it. If you allow yourself to explore, you may find a better way of doing things. Or a way that fits you better, something you enjoy. This can be your most exciting opportunity to build something really special and unique. In this Summer Quickie, I'm revisiting a conversation from Episode 25 with Rachael Wonderlin of Dementia By Day. Rachael is one of those people who stared her industry in the face and said, “I don't think this is how it needs to be.” She saw a better way and wasn't afraid to try something new and figure it out on her own. We discuss how under-nourishing, which can arise from restricted eating can lead to slower digestion, exacerbate gut symptoms and lead to further restricted eating patterns. This week I interview Rachael Hartley, fellow digestive health dietician on the intersection between IBS and eating disorders. Rachael Hartley, RD, LD, is a Columbia, SC-based nutrition therapist, certified intuitive eating counselor and nationally-recognized food and nutrition expert who is passionate about helping others rediscover the joy of eating and foster a healthier relationship with food. She is the founder of Rachael Hartley Nutrition, a weight-inclusive practice where she specializes in disordered eating and healing from chronic dieting, IBS and other digestive disorders, and women's health. She also runs the popular blog The Joy of Eating, where she shares practical intuitive eating advice and non-diet recipes and is featured regularly in national media outlets. Rachael also presents regularly about intuitive eating and non-diet nutrition to professional audiences and the general public. We talk about: How Rachael became interested in the field of eating disorders The prevalence of digestive symptoms in eating disorders/disordered eating Some screening/red flags to consider when working with clients with IBS How to treat digestive symptoms in a patient with eating disorders What role does the gut-brain connection play in cases of IBS and eating disorders? What other interventions we can implement that doesn't require restricted eating What is the link between feeling stressed about eating and the reaction our gut experiences as a result of that? Who is a good candidate for low-FODMAP diet? What are the risks of the low-FODMAP diet? Pathologizing bloating What about gut directed hypnotherapy? Does medication have a place in IBS management? After working long hours as a Wall Street consultant, overcommitting herself to friends and colleagues, and putting her health on the backburner, Rachael developed an autoimmune disorder that forced her to slow down. The daily gym sessions, people-pleasing social life, lack of sleep and nonexistent lunch hours had finally caught up with her, and it took three years to return to homeostasis. During the time away from her career she began putting herself first, which opened her eyes to the flaws in our culture, a culture that puts success ahead of peoples’ health and unique pursuits of personal fulfillment. Rachael committed to reconnecting with her true self and began evaluating how the vicious cycle of overworking perpetuates itself in our culture. Rachael was inspired to start Return To Flow to help burnt out professionals break free from our hustle culture and find balance and fulfilment — whatever that looks like for them. Listen to today’s episode to learn more about the 7 types of burnout and how to heal from hustle culture! In this episode we discuss: Rachael shares her journey to becoming a coach that helps burnt out professionals break free from hustle culture. How American culture idolize workaholics - and why women are hit the hardest. The 7 main causes of burnout + the signs and symptoms of each. Why idolizing successful people’s routines and following “productivity hacks” and traditional self-help advice can be toxic and unhelpful. How to separate professional success and self worth. A trend we’ve noticed with almost every people-pleaser we’ve coached (or anyone who cares too much about what others think) is that they have a really hard time knowing who they are and what they want. It makes sense. When you’ve spent your whole life looking outward—“What will make these people happy?” “Who do I need to be to be liked, loved and accepted?”—Then there’s no space to go inward and consider who you are and what you want. And sadly, often you’ve been actively discouraged from asking those questions at all. You’re told it’s “selfish.” You can probably relate, and so can Rachael Tomasello. In this month’s brand-new interview with a normal person, Rachel and Rachael got into… How Rachael spent a decade in a career that wasn’t aligned with her because it was what she was “supposed” to do. How she had to seriously tone down her natural personality and interests around her family, for fear of being judged and rejected. The challenges that popped up when she made a 180 pivot in her career toward something way more suited to her. Her guidance about how to take feedback, and whose opinions about you and your work matter (and whose don’t). How she got comfortable with the idea of allowing herself to scare people, if necessary! There is SO much to relate to in this one. Leave a comment after you’ve listened to share what resonated with you most! GETTING OVER PEOPLE PLEASING IS COMING BACK! Caring too much about what other people think is one of the TOP reasons people struggle to know who they are or what they want out of life. Before you can find direction, it helps to get to the root of one of your deepest blocks! Our course, Getting Over People Pleasing, will be open for enrollment from Friday, August 21 to Friday, August 28! This course will NOT be available 24/7. If we offer it again, it won’t be for another year. It will last for about 4 weeks, and during that time you'll get weekly video lessons and workbook prompts. We officially get started on Monday, August 31. There will be a private forum so that you, and the other members of the group, can ask us questions and share your stories. This course is for people who want to bridge the gap between knowing what they should be doing, and actually doing it. Consider this course a fun-yet-challenging boot camp of sorts! We're going to help you heal some old wounds that keep you trapped in the need to please and get desensitized to the discomfort of things like setting boundaries, saying no, and speaking up for yourself. This course will be action-oriented. Yes, there will be some teaching, but everything we teach is going to be actionable. And we're going to hold you accountable for taking that action! By the end, we know you'll feel a LOT freer, calmer, more confident, resilient, and most importantly—CLEAR. Join the VIP list so you don’t miss the announcement when it’s open! In this episode Mark interviews Rachael Herron about her writing, her multiple pseudonyms, being a hybrid author, and writing memoirs. Prior to the interview, Mark shares some comments from recent episodes and via Twitter, some information about an offer the Clark Chamberlain has for his Story Stuck Consultation, and a personal update. He also thanks new patron Johanna Rothman as well as all existing patrons for the podcast, and lets his patrons know that they were automatically entered in a chance to win a story stuck consultation from Clark. In their conversation, Mark and Rachael discuss: The thought that being a writer is like having homework for the rest of your life Rachael's thriller (Hush Little Baby) that she just turned into her editor at Penguin Random House and which comes out in May 2021 Getting over the "who cares" issues she was having working on this novel in the middle of a global pandemic and a world-wide drive to end systemic racism by recognizing that it's okay to delve deep into a focused project like this How willpower can be a finite, exhaustible resource How a good writer can take people out of their normal world and the feeling when a reader reaches out to let Rachael know that her book has moved them or helped them The feeling when you're reading a book that the person who wrote it "just gets you" The value of feeling seen and heard, of community, and of responding to reader emails Being involved in blogging from the early days, and the connections that can come out of that The fact that, despite appearing to share everything socially and on blogs, podcasts, etc, the content is actually curated - but that it's still authentic Rachael's book "Fast Draft Your Memoir: Write Your Life Story in 45 Hours" The importance of recognizing that there are plenty of people who want to write a memoir but who don't want to writers How there are so many genres within memoir One of the principal tenants of a good memoir - in that you treat yourself more critically than anyone else, and that you give and show grace to anyone who might have done you wrong How when you write about the most uncomfortable things how people really lean in to listen How Rachael's book "Letters to New Authors" is based on a series of emails she created to encourage other writers Being a fully hybrid author, and the mental shift involved when Rachael moves between traditional and indie publishing How not having control of little things can drive Rachael crazy with some of her books How Rachael's books, both, traditionally published and indie published, tend to sell better in eBook format The advice that Rachael would give to her younger self Ira Glass's theory of "the gap" And so much more . . . There are countless sensitive skincare products available today. For people with skin rashes and dry skin, these products seem like the right fit, because "dry" and "rashes" often go hand in hand with "sensitive". My guest today will debunk this common misconception. My guest today is Rachael Pontillo, a holistic skincare innovator, author, and educator. Rachael is the bestselling author of the book Love Your Skin, Love Yourself, and co-author of The Sauce Code. She's a functional nutrition practitioner, AADP and IAHC Board Certified International Health Coach, licensed aesthetician, and natural skincare formulator and educator. She's the president and co-founder of the Nutritional Aesthetics™ Alliance, the creator of the popular skincare and healthy lifestyle blog, Holistically Haute™, as well as the much-loved online course, Create Your Skincare. She's an avid herbalist, skincare ingredient aficionado, and lifelong learner. Rachael is also my good friend. Join us as we talk about the problem with the term "sensitive skin", and how to better recognize and care for your skin type. Has learning your skin type improved your skin health? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: Rachael's take on skincare products for sensitive skin How can you identify your skin type? How Rachael helped Jen with her sebaceous gland hyperplasia How to maintain acid mantle of the skin Quotes “Most people are not born with sensitive skin. Most people develop sensitive skin over time from overexposure to things in the environment.” [4:54] “We don't have a skin type. We all have combination skin. We just have to figure out what that combination is.” [18:28] Links Find Rachael online Create Your Skincare Nutritional Aesthetics Interested in trying Rachael's online classes to create your own skincare? Rachael Kay Albers is a digital strategist and business comedian. As the founder and creative director of RKA ink, a branding, web design, and digital marketing studio based outside Chicago, Rachael has helped hundreds of thought leaders and visionary entrepreneurs all over the world stand out online without selling their soul or playing the manipulation game. When not crafting epic, unforgettable brands for her clients, Rachael hosts Awkward Marketing, a business comedy show blending fun-sized business advice with storytelling and sketch comedy. Think of her as the one-woman SNL of biz TV. Here's what we covered on the episode: How I had Rachael on the podcast in episode 22 where we talked about how just building a website for your client isn't enough How Rachael is going through a rebrand and hired Sarah Ashman to help with the process How offers that Rachael sees online for fast branding & design lead her to speak out on Instagram How you can get a new brand look, feel and starter website in a short amount of time but is that in your businesses best interest in the long run How small businesses need to be educated on what a brand is instead of believing the common myth that your brand is your visuals How you can go to Rachael's Instagram to check out her posts How meeting with Sarah made Rachael realize her brand didn't match what she was putting out into the world How Sarah told Rachael on their discovery call that they have to know what they are packaging before they work on the visual direction of her brand How Rachael didn't take the advice she gives her own clients about not focusing on the visual right away but focusing on your business strategy and where the future of your business is going first What the first process of Rachael's rebrand was and how it can inspire other designers How Rachael booked a room at the Four Seasons Hotel so she could be inspired and focus on what she really wants for the future of her business How branding is more emotional than people might know so when you rebrand it's really like therapy for your business How working with Sarah was the biggest investment Rachael made for her business and how it changed her mindset about her leadership role How Rachael's agency, RKA ink is staying similar to what they were before but she's building a new website for her personal brand, Rachael Kay Albers How Rachael's agency is “done for you” and her brand Rachael Kay Albers is “show you how to” where Awkward Marketing, consulting services and courses will live How Rachael wanted to move into the “show you how to” side to reach infinite people because she can only take on so many one on one clients each year with the agency side How Rachael has been speaking everywhere because it truly fulfills her and brings brand awareness, leads and credibility How Rachael goes about her social media strategy in a more organic way and how she has used social media posts to create bigger content pieces, videos or even keynotes How Rachael doesn't hire out her content creation because she loves doing it How sometimes you do need to hire an outside person to help accelerate things, see blind spots and because you might be too busy The break down of how much time Rachael spends in the different areas of her business How there are two camps for how people do their work, camp hustle and camp chill out, where some people work hard to make money and where others don't work that much and still make a lot of money How both camps can be toxic and how your reality is somewhere in the middle of both How Rachael works very hard partly because of the big shift her business is going through so she can make more revenue from courses, speaking and consulting and less from one on one clients How people don't talk about when you're scaling your business it can be a long, slow pivot when you have no other strong source of income How Rachael's pivot for her own business has taken years and it will continue to take years Why Rachael is doing the work now so she can give a gift to her future self and why you should too Keep an eye out for Rachael's rebrand because bringing Sarah in to help has created magic for her business and how bringing an outside person in could help you too Links mentioned: Rachael's Website RKA ink Awkward Marketing Webpage Awkward Marketing YouTube Channel Connect with Rachael on Instagram Like what you heard? Two-Brain Radio: From $260 in Ads to $5,000 in Front-End Sales With Rachael O'DonnellIn September 2017, Rachael O'Donnell took the leap: She quit her job as a clinical social worker and closed her private practice to open Grit and Grace CrossFit in Gorham, Maine. Her social-work experience added tremendous value to what she had to offer as a coach, employer and leader, but she lacked the business skills she needed for her business to truly thrive. She was also uncomfortable with sales and marketing. After joining the Two-Brain family, Rachael learned how to offload low-value tasks so she could focus on the business—and she gained a new perspective on marketing: It's just helping people who need it.Links:https://fortimedesign.com/https://gritandgracecrossfit.com/Contact:https://gritandgracecrossfit.com/Instagram: @gritandgracecrossfitTimeline:3:35 – Using CrossFit to quit smoking.4:25 – From clinical social work to coaching CrossFit.6:13 – How Rachael’s social-work background helps her as a coach and leader.7:49 – Why “Grit and Grace”?8:51 – Turning to Two-Brain after working 90-plus-hour weeks.12:13 – The first payoff: getting time back and getting closer to Perfect Day.14:52 – On hiring coaches.18:28 – When evaluating new or potential staff, watch what they do, not what they say.20:13 – Grit and Grace core values.22:11 – Implementing core values into if-then scenario practice.25:23 – Turning $260 in ad spend into $5,000 in front-end revenue.26:53 – Leads are just people who need help.28:24 – Overcoming discomfort with the sales process.30:55 – The key to success: knowing when you need help.

Rachael is the plant lady behind Infinite Succulent and the author of the succulent crafting book Infinite Succulent: Miniature Living Art to Keep or Share. The book is filled with incredible and easy succulent crafts for any skill level. I have been obsessed with succulent crowns ever since I found them on Instagram over a year ago and got one for myself on my last trip to San Diego. I’ve wanted to do an episode on DIY Succulent Crowns for a year and I’m so excited to have had the opportunity to finally be bringing an episode to you because I just always feel so special and giddy whenever I’ve worn one in the past. They are such a fun craft to do with friends or your kids. I hope you enjoy our wonderful conversation! At this live taping, Rachael walks Maria (and guests) through making their own succulent crowns from start to finish and teaches us how to replant our crowns to have them live on forever. A few heads up about this episode 1) the nursery and space for this event was so perfect, we were surround by every dream plant you couldn't imagine in this little green house on the property, but you can hear some shoppers milling about in the background at times, and might hear some cars or sirens passing on the local roads. Don’t let it deter you- they will pass. 2) Rachael and I do our very best to explain what we are doing while we were doing it- but real talk, this was the first time trying to do a live taping/DIY event like this. Our amazing photographer Gabaccia, took some amazing companion photos, and made an adorable video as a companion to this episode, so head to the show notes at bloomandgrowradio.com/succulentcrowns to see the photos of what we were talking about. I also do a general overview of all of the instructions at the end of the episode. 3) Incase it isn’t clear in the start of the episode- Rachael has two different types of succulent crown crafts that she offers in her book- I did the tie back version, which is basically the succulents attached to the lace on leather string that ties around my head (because my head is huge and normal crowns don't fit it) and then she does the actual headband versions. There are photos of both, but when you hear us talking about the differences, that’s what we are talking about. In this episode we learn: How Rachael began crafting with plants and why she feels they are important activities for children and adults What materials you need for a succulent crown How to take a proper clipping for a succulent craft Step by step process for crafting you very own succulent crown How to care for the crowns once they are completed How and when to separate and root your cuttings Best practices for rooting your cuttings once they are done Everything about the creation of Rachael’s new book Infinite Succulent: Miniature Living Art to Keep or Share Thank you so much to Rachael again for making my dreams come true by helping me bring a succulent crown tutorial to life. Plant friends… they are so fun to wear. I feel like I will be doing this craft at every bachelorette party I ever go to again. Also Rachael's book Infinite Succulent: Miniature Living Art to Keep or Share is absolutely amazing! You should check it out if you want more support on this craft, or are curious about all the amazing other succulent crafts in there. It's the perfect gift for the crafty person or planty person in your life! Thank you to Barrel and Branches Nursery for hosting, make sure to visit next time you are in San Diego. Thank you to C&L Catering and Decor for providing such yummy snacks! *Link to this book is the Bloom and Grow Amazon Affiliate link, meaning BAGR makes a small portion of the sale, at no cost to you! So thanks! I know our conversation flowed a lot, so: Overview of the craft: Start with several cuttings of succulents, cut right up to the leaves or what I call “booty” of the succulent, and let the cut callous. The materials you need are three pieces of sturdy lace, some form of headband whether its an actual metal or plastic one, or string for the tieback version, reindeer moss, craft glue or a hot glue gun, and any other articles you might want to fasten to the crown Glue two pieces of lace together, then take that sturdy piece, and place the headband in between the third piece of lace and glue those pieces together. That will be the working surface for your crown. Glue reindeer moss onto the crown, and trim it very short to the lace. This will be what you fasten your succulents to. Get an idea of the general design of the crown, and then start gluing. Start with your largest succulent. It looks nice to do a large succulent with one or two small ones around it, to kind of mimic what a pup would look like in nature. Also if you are interested in making your own crowns, the materials are available in my Amazon Storefront under DIY Succulent Crowns (I also have lots of other recommendations for products I like and inspo from other episodes) and Rachael has craft kits with everything you need to make the crafts from her book on her website. The only way I’m even slightly able to relate to today’s guest is because I’ve seen Miss Congeniality upwards of 13 times (and yes could definitely recognize it through a hotel wall like Chandler duh). Rachael Todd, I mean, sorry, MISS UNITED STATES, is the leader of the Gorgeous Mind Movement - her creation to help women master their minds so they can create a life of meaning. Aside from being Miss United States, Rachael is mindset coach, a health coach, a speaker and an entrepreneur. As you’ll hear in our chat, before becoming Miss US, or even Miss Florida (oh yeah, she’s that, too!) she had to overcome BIG shiz like: self-doubt, insecurities, stress, fear, lack of balance and no knowledge on how to wear a crown. Rachael Hoffman is one of those people who everyone in the room gravitates towards. She is vibrant and magnetic. She speaks with authority, but listens with intent. Best of all, she goes above and beyond to help those around her in any way she can, regardless of how well she knows them and regardless of if she will get anything in return. I was first introduced to Rachael from a mutual friend and before she even met me she had agreed to come on the podcast and then offered to help me throw the launch party! I was truly taken aback and extremely grateful for her willingness to help someone she barely knew. But I’ve come to learn that that is just who she is. Rachael grew up in a suburb of Chicago and after dealing with some trauma in her late teens she turned to music to help her cope. She got into radio broadcasting and DJ’ing which eventually led her to a job in nightclub promotion. The experience she gained from creating and marketing events in the nightlife industry led her to a business partnership with a good friend. Together they created marketing and ad campaigns for brands such as FlyWheel and Exhale Spa. Rachael eventually landed her current position as the VP of Marketing for Keune Haircosmetics North America where she leads a team talented women. Rachael is extremely knowledgeable about marketing and advertising. In this episode she shares her insight into the best practices for marketing a small business or brand. We also dive into the blessings and struggles of motherhood, the power of gratitude and how having a growth mentality is the key to achieving your goals. Here is more of what you can expect: - How marketing and advertising has evolved over the past decade - The importance of being relevant and engaging to your audience - How she landed her job with Keune Haircosmetics - The best way to use social media to market yourself or your business - A big mistake brands make when it comes to their social media marketing - Tracking the analytics of your marketing - Staying true to yourself and your brand - Tailoring your marketing strategy to your business and brand - The idea that you have to GIVE to your audience before you can ASK from your audience - How Rachael juggles motherhood and business - Taking action every single day to have a growth mindset and cultivate the life you want - Her practice of gratitude and how it shapes her life and her family dynamic - The power of vulnerability More about Rachael: Keune HaircosmeticsRachael's Linkedin Naomi Ziva's story
