In this episode, I speak with Yao Huang about her work "USING MOBILE AUGMENTED REALITY IN PERFORMANCE SUPPORT." Yao Huang is currently a doctoral candidate in the Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies program at Florida State University. Her research focuses on Human Performance Improvement, especially how mobile and augmented reality technologies enhance performance support in the workplace. Yao holds a Master's degree in Instructional Design & Technology from the University of Memphis and a Human Performance Technology certificate from Florida State University. Yao has more than 10-year working experience as a learning consultant at International Paper Headquarters and as a business development manager at Trivantis China department. Yao has a few publications about adopting augmented reality technologies to enhance performance support in the workplace. Yao received two scholarships at FSU – Dr. Linda J. Smith Endowed Scholarship for Lifelong Learning (2020) and Gagne-Briggs Endowed Scholarship (2016). Yao is working on her dissertation and expects to graduate in summer 2022.

With a new technology partner, Envisage Technologies that oversees the Acadis Portal and FirstForward Training and Exposure Tracking, new deliverables are in the works to allow a better learning experience from near miss reports. The Near Miss Program also is looking to further promote Human Performance Improvement to help fire departments at the operational level. John Russ is an eighteen-year veteran of the fire service, currently working for the Brentwood (TN) Fire & Rescue Department as a Lieutenant/ Paramedic. He has been the Program Manager for the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ Firefighter Near Miss Reporting System since January 2016. John has worked in various facets of the Firefighter Near Miss Reporting System since its inception in 2005. John also has worked for numerous career and voluntary fire and emergency service providers to include prehospital emergency medical service providers, specialized technical rescue organizations, along with risk management and prevention entities. Critical thinking means making reasoned judgments that are logical and well-thought out. It is a way of thinking in which you don't simply accept all arguments and conclusions you are exposed to, but rather have an attitude involving questioning such arguments and conclusions. Thom and Chris discuss, in detail, how critical thinking is used in law enforcement and even in higher education. Research demonstrates that higher education is becoming the mainstay in law enforcement in America. The courts have consistently ruled that law enforcement is demanding enough to warrant higher education as part of the hiring process. Rob Fisher is the President of Fisher IT, Inc. Rob spent almost ten years in the US Navy before working at the South Texas Nuclear Project for twelve years. During this time Rob worked in Operations, Radiation Protection, Chemistry, Environmental and Radwaste, and ultimately owned the Human Performance Improvement initiative and the Procedure Program through a difficult plant recovery time. Rob has been consulting since leaving commercial nuclear power operations in 1996.Rob has extensive experience in performing investigations, designing performance improvement systems, designing and improving corrective action programs, designing and running procedure programs, and educating staff. As a previous owner of these areas, he brings an implementation mentality to consulting. He was involved in developing the nuclear industry standards for both human performance and procedures. He has successfully consulted for nearly one hundred companies in various fields including manufacturing, power generation, power transmission and distribution, and numerous Department of Energy sites.
