* Bob Enyart's Life's Work - The Plot: All stories have a plot. The main story line in a narrative forms the plot. Millions of books, including historical texts, cannot be understood apart from recognizing the plot, getting to know the characters, and learning the setting. The setting refers to the backdrop for the action, when and where, in time and space, the action occurs. Does the Bible have a plot? * Read, Listen, or Share with Kids: You can: - read Bob's best-selling book The Plot or download it as a PDF - listen to the Plot Seminar via instant download or on MP3 CD - listen to the entire set of all five of Bob's Plot Bible Study Albums, or - share The Plot Boys with Bible students of all ages! - check out Chapter 1 of The Plot online. You'll love this powerful teaching through Scripture as you see that the overview of the Bible really is the only valid key to its details! And of course, by purchasing any of these Bible resources, you'll be supporting our online and broadcast outreach for another year! * Learning from the Plot: Most Bible students readily agree with this basic plot of the Bible. Yet within the structure of this plot lies the key to understanding almost all of the major disputes that divide Christians. * Stories Often Deliver Morals: "The moral of the story is," ends many anecdotes. A typical morality tale attempts to teach a good lesson, but the story itself is fictitious. The Bible presents its message through the vehicle of a true story (although it does of course contain parables). To understand the moral of a story, one must understand the story itself. Misunderstanding the story by missing the plot or a vital plot twist makes it difficult to ascertain the moral of the story. How can someone see all the details in a murky big picture? God informs men that His Word has a plot, and that plot twists possibly may occur. Thus Bible students must remain alert when reading the Bible for the major steps of the plot and the plot twists.Ignoring the Plot: Ten big doctrinal debates divide millions of believers. Attempting to resolve all ten questions by traditional means is a daunting task. Is there one root cause for all ten disagreements? Does a common theological thread tie these ten seemingly unrelated doctrines together? If all ten disputes derive from one fundamental cause, might there then be a single solution to these questions? Imagine resolving all ten disputes with one simple biblical fact found in one single verse based on the overall plot of the Bible. If such a fact exists which alone could solve all ten disputes, imagine how crucial that Bible idea would be. However, ignoring the Bible's big picture consigns these disputes to irreconcilable differences. A young political observer once wondered why American conservatives and liberals separated themselves so distinctly along opposing ideas. Consider these generalities: Left-Wingers Right-Wingers Support welfare Oppose welfare Support foreign aid Oppose foreign aid Support high taxes Oppose high taxes Support giving children condoms Oppose giving children condoms Support pornographers Oppose pornographers Support killing unborn children Oppose killing unborn children Oppose killing murderers Support killing murderers Oppose gun ownership Support gun ownership Weaken America's military Strengthen America's military Worship trees Cut down trees (a renewable resource) Chart the views of liberals like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Al Gore. They, along with most liberal leaders, agree with the column on the left. Conservative leaders like Alan Keyes tend to concur with the issues on the right. The respective supporters of these two camps tend to hold their party line. For example, of these ten issues, millions of liberals will hold to most issues of the left and millions of conservatives will stand for most issues on the right. But why? Why do people line up along such well-defined battle lines? Why is there not an equal number who agree with five issues on the right and five on the left? Why do most leaders who support killing an innocent unborn child oppose killing a guilty murdering rapist? Why does almost everyone who supports welfare also defend a right to exploit women sexually through pornography? If these disagreements arose randomly in a disconnected fashion, then no pattern of adherents would likely exist. A line of demarcation appears, however, because these issues do not arbitrarily arise, but result from society acting out underlying principles. Once a man commits to certain fundamental precepts, then experienced observers can guess many of his future political preferences. Some defend the existence of absolute truth. Others reject the notion of absolute right and wrong and put their hope in relative morality. The Ten Commandments become ten suggestions, if that. The world calls these relativists left-wingers. The defenders of absolutes believe that truth descends from God. The world calls us right-wingers. This political observation makes a good analogy. Patterns of disagreement can reveal much about underlying presuppositions. Different foundational ideas then lead to various, though related, disputes. Likewise, exploring ten major doctrinal disputes can reveal an incredible biblical pattern. The Plot traces the origins of these debates to the first century Christian leaders. Then the Apostle Paul's handling of early doctrinal disagreements provides the guidance to resolve today's debates. The Epistles become the compass, the whole Word of God the map, to traverse the terrain of human existence. God does not have doctrinal difficulties. Why? As the author, He knows the meaning of Bible passages. God does not have "problem texts." Therefore, when God opens eyes to solve doctrinal disputes, "problem texts" disappear for men also. Thus the doctrinal answer offered in this book turns problem texts into "proof texts!" Readers will see that the opposing sets of Bible verses often used in traditional doctrinal debate will all support true theology. Get the Big Picture At the outset of taking an awesome biblical journey in The Plot, realize the goal is to grasp the Bible's big picture. The successful student masters the wider context of debated issues. The meaning of a word depends partly on its context within the sentence; the meaning of the sentence depends partly on its context with the paragraph; the meaning of the paragraph on the chapter; the chapter on the book; and the proper understanding of even the book depends on its position within the context of the Bible. Those who understand the big picture avoid getting lost in the details. Now the fun begins. Brace yourself for excitement, but proceed with maximum alertness! The Challenge for The Plot The primary biblical details this book attempts to clear up include the following ten doctrinal debates: Some Believe Others Believe Believers can lose their salvation Believers cannot lose their salvation Baptism is necessary Baptism is not necessary Believers speak in tongues Believers do not speak in tongues God will answer prayers of faith Many good prayers go unanswered Miracles and healing are assured Miracles and healing are not assured There is no pre-tribulation rapture The rapture is before the tribulation Believers must keep the law Believers are not under the law Salvation by faith requires works Salvation requires faith and not works Believers must keep the Sabbath Sabbath observance is unnecessary Unclean foods are prohibited All foods are clean More than anything, this author wants to thoroughly communicate the overall plot of the Bible to each reader. As a secondary effect of having a solid understanding of the big picture of any book, the reader then has a much easier task grasping the details of that book. Knowing the plot helps identify the twists. Knowing the twists helps explain a myriad of details. A Daunting Task To resolve these ten disputes, someone could prepare ten arguments, one for each issue. All pros and cons must be evaluated for each issue. The student analyzes only a few dozen Scriptures for certain disputes; for others, he analyzes hundreds. A number of scholarly books defend each opposing doctrine. Limiting the effort to only two authors advocating each position requires reading forty books that mostly contradict one another. Many students consume years in this effort. In the end, the student sides with one position or the other, for each dispute, weighing countless factors. Regardless of the student's conclusions, millions of believers will disagree with him. The masses of Christians cannot be right on these doctrines, because the masses disagree with one another. Even after such a colossal effort, how many of these ten doctrinal questions would the average reader get right? A Single, Simple Solution Imagine, for the moment, that someone could resolve all ten questions simply by learning one single Bible verse. Is it possible that one single concept, one idea, one thought, revealed in a single Bible verse, could resolve every debate listed above? This book presents just such a verse for the reader's consideration. Some will think it impossible for one Bible fact to answer all these dilemmas. If, however, someone asked God to unravel these mysteries, could He do so in a single statement? If He could, then perhaps His Word does also. If God could not, then the author should stop writing this book. The Plot of the Bible argues, though, that God could, and that He has, proclaimed the answer to these ten debates in a single verse. Consider any discipline-criminal law, physics, Shakespeare. Imagine that within that field of study ten apparently unrelated debates rage. Imagine that one discovery or one observation or one perspective, when applied to these disagreements, had the ability to resolve, neatly and completely, each and every dilemma. The fact that one simple idea can address ten different quandaries inherently gives that idea credibility and makes it worthy of full examination. For example, a good law well enforced will bring about unimagined benefits in countless circumstances. Whereas a bad law, though designed to address a specific problem, actually creates more problems than it supposedly solves. Historically, a law against adultery reduced infidelity and divorce as expected. But it also lowered rates for murder, rape, kidnapping, and child abuse; this law can even improve the economy thereby raising the standard of living. When one simple biblical idea resolves many seemingly unrelated troubles, that idea merits great attention. Similarly, if someone invents a Bible "answer," that idea will likely create more problems than it supposedly solves. Thus the Christians who argue that men have a "right to fornicate" help to unleash a tidal wave of destruction. If, however, one concept helps effortlessly to avoid numerous problems, the concept may very well be valid. No Problem Texts! A typical doctrinal argument emphasizes certain biblical passages (its proof texts) while de-emphasizing other passages (its problem texts). This very approach makes many students uncomfortable because they want to embrace the whole word of God. Ignoring or diminishing certain texts that appear to contradict a conclusion unsettles them and rightly so. Any number of arguments can be presented for or against the ten doctrinal disputes listed above. These arguments traditionally pit one set of Bible verses against another. Someone trying to prove that a believer cannot lose his salvation will cite certain proof texts (i.e., Eph. 4:30; Phil. 1:6) and dispute other problem texts (i.e., Heb. 6:4-6; 2 Pet. 2:20-22). Those who argue that a believer can lose his salvation swap the passages, so that they heartily endorse their proof texts (i.e., Heb. 6:4-6; 2 Pet. 2:20-22), while contending with their problem texts (i.e., Eph. 4:30; Phil. 1:6). What if God has presented one biblical key that would not only answer all the confusion, but would also erase the tension between the traditional proof and problem texts? The student would then see both sets of proof and problem texts merge into a single grouping of proof texts. Christians expect exactly this in heaven. Once in heaven "I shall know just as I also am known" (1 Cor. 13:12) by God, without confusion. Heaven admits no "problem verses." God's Word will exist in heaven (Mat. 24:35) open, honest, simple to understand and true at face value. The solution to these ten doctrinal debates does not require diminishing or obfuscating, explaining away or twisting scores of problem verses. The solution lies in understanding the big picture of the Bible. Those well versed on the biblical plot and the plot twists can read Bible passages and accept them for just what they appear to say without harboring a sense of internal conflict. The Bible is the Word of God. The Bible makes sense and does not contradict itself. Today's Resource: Learn the key to the plot twist in Bob Enyart's best-selling book, The Plot! You'll love this powerful teaching through Scripture as you see that the overview of the Bible really is the only valid key to its details! * Historical Notes on the Pre-Tribulation Rapture: Chapter 11 of The Plot includes a response to the widespread claim that pre-tribulation rapture teaching began with the Plymouth Brethren and John Darby (d. 1882). That chapter references this webpage, as kgov.com/pre-trib, for more information. In the past, many Christians who wrote of the tribulation saw it as a three and a half year period. (The Plot observes that Jesus mentioned that the Tribulation may be "shortened" and that Peter called for the "hastening" of the coming of the Lord. Thus it is correct that the coming tribulation may be less than a full seven years. The text also shows that the Twelve Apostles saw, correctly, that Joel's end-times prophecy began its fulfillment at Christ's ascension. Therefore they, also correctly, expected His soon return. However, one year after the resurrection Luke 13:6-9, God temporarily cut off Israel Romans 11:11-15, 19-20, 23-26, when He grafted in the Body of Christ. So while the Great Tribulation will likely be longer than the three and a half years held by many generations of Christians, as Jesus said, those days can be "shortened", so we can expect the Tribulation to be less than a full seven years.) On what we today call the pre-tribulation rapture, Morgan Edwards, a graduate of Bristol Baptist College, prominent religion historian, Baptist pastor, and a founder of Brown University, wrote in 1788: The distance between the first and second resurrection will be somewhat more than a thousand years. I say, somewhat more—, because the dead saints will be raised, and the living changed at Christ's "appearing in the air" (I Thes. iv. 17); and this will be about three years and a half before the millennium, as we shall see hereafter: but will he and they abide in the air all that time? No: they will ascend to paradise, or to some one of those many "mansions in the father's house" (John xiv. 2), and disappear during the foresaid period of time. The design of this retreat and disappearing will be to judge the risen and changed saints; for "now the time is come that judgment must begin," and that will be "at the house of God" (I Pet. iv. 17)." For other instances of the teaching of the pre-tribulation rapture in history, for example, including from 1300 A.D. and 400 A.D., please see chapter 11 of my book The Plot. Here's an excerpt... Belief in a specifically pre-tribulation rapture can be traced back in various ways, including to more almost 400 years before Bunyan in Italy, and more than a thousand years before him in what today is Turkey on the Syrian border. In northern Italy a treatise on the Apostolic Brethren says that their followers, "would be transferred into Paradise, in which are Enoch and Elijah… preserved unharmed from the persecution of the Antichrist… then Enoch and Elijah themselves would descend on the earth… would be killed… and thus Antichrist would reign for a long time", after which Christ returns to the earth with His saints. Further, a Latin manuscript of the sixth century exists which some scholars believe can be traced back to a prominent Syrian church father, the prolific Ephraem of Nisibis (306‑373 AD). A passage from a sermon on prophecy and the antichrist translates into English as: "For all the saints and Elect of God are gathered, prior to the tribulation that is to come, and are taken to the Lord lest they see the confusion that is to overwhelm the world because of our sins." For more, see online A History of Pre-Darby Rapture Advocates by Dr. Thomas Ice. * More On Baptism: Sadly, a ritual that takes perhaps five minutes out of an 80-year life has divided Christ's followers on many lines and into often strongly opposed camps splitting churches and helping to divide tens of millions of believers into opposing Baptist, Adventist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, Orthodox, and Presbyterian denominations. Believers disagree over: - the mode / method – sprinkling, pouring, immersion, partial immersion - the candidate / qualification – none or conversion (believers) - the age – infant, child, or adult - the agent – a lay person, minister, or the Holy Spirit - the formulation – in Christ's name alone or that of the Trinity - the nature – symbolic, moral, or spiritual - the reason – the remission of sin, obedience, a symbol, or church membership - the effect – obedience, identification, or salvation Yet with foresight the Holy Spirit inspired the greatest evangelist in history to write "I thank God that I baptized none of you" except for a very few, as the Apostle Paul explained that, "Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel" (1 Cor. 1:14-17). From that godly perspective, the church has descended into extreme disagreements, teachings, and practices... In this episode I discuss the origins of Halloween or as it was called Hallowtide; later to be renamed All Saints Day by Pope Gregory III. It is steeped in idolatry, pagan worship and the celebration of death. As Christians we should closely consider if this is a holiday that we should observe. I discuss the history and the Biblical response to this holiday. Below are the scriptures that I used in my research. Because pride is so self-absorbed, it is often difficult to identify in oneself. Thus, it is easy to think we are walking in humility when we really are not. In this Bible Study session, Katherine shares some indicators of pride. As you listen, locate yourself. Humble yourself before the Lord and allow Him to work on you in the areas He quickens to you. God is faithful. Faithful is He Who calleth you, Who also will do it (I Thes. 5:24). *** Connect with us! In this episode I look at the distinctions of wisdom, understanding and knowledge. "for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her." (Pr. 8:11) "test everything; hold fast what is good." (I Thes. 5:21)
What is your favorite attribute of God? The majority say God’s faithfulness. Why would faithfulness be so valued and important to us? Maybe because we don’t see it in our world very much. Children are abandoned by their parents, spouses leave marriages, when people face difficult circumstances, how quickly they give up.But faithful is what God is – He’s unwaveringly loyal, constant, reliable, and steadfast. He is true to who He is. God will always be absolutely truthful and true. He is the definition of honesty and integrity and will hold up His end of the deal. He is certain, established, lasting, enduring, and continuing. He won’t do anything against who He is. Tozer says, “God being who He is, cannot cease to be what He is, and being what He is, He cannot act- out of character with Himself. (Since) He is faithful (he cannot be unfaithful)…, so all His words and acts must be and remain faithful.”Deut 7:9b – He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands. Lam 3:22-23 – Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. I Thes 5:24 – He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.”Our other attribute that God is Father. God created the family be the perfect environment to raise children under a loving marriage covenant between a man and a woman. Children would grow up with committed parents who would raise them up in the ways of the Lord. It was to be a safe environment filled with love, support, and nurturing. What was your earthly father like? I’ll bet you that your father has come short in some way or another. We need to fight against the lie that how your earthly father is, is how your heavenly Father is. Know who God the Father is in His character and His ways so you do not confuse the two. In the parable of the prodigal son, the father was good yet the son’s disposition was one of rebellion, unthankfulness, and selfish ambition. Until the son focused on all the blessings he had with his father instead of all what appeared to be restrictions, then he came to his senses and came home. And the father welcomed him with open arms and love, freely forgiving and ready to reinstate him into the family. I John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.Jesus was faithful to the Father from the beginning to the end of His life on earth. He came to do the Father’s will. Heb 2: 17 – He had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.Jesus spoke of God as Father. It reflected His relationship to God but He also wanted us to know that it is our relationship to God as well. Jesus told Mary at the empty tomb, “I am returning to my Father and your Father.” Jesus was constantly leading people into a family relationship with Him and the Father. God and Jesus are in a loving relationship and they ask us to be a part of that family. Rom 8 says, “and by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” It is like calling God, Daddy. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.” God is a father to the fatherless, His love for you is immeasurable, He created you and so will always be there to provide, protect, and support you. You can come to Him with any request knowing he is attentive and wants absolutely what is best for you. He is with you and will never leave you. He is even kind enough to discipline as a good father would do to you to keep you on the path of peace and blessing. Living a Radical Life for Jesus means believing that God is a Faithful Father.

The ‘SOUL' of man is a vital part of our lives. In fact, as the soul goes, so goes every area of our life. The soul is where the will, the mind, the emotions, the memories, our beliefs, and so much more is held. It is literally the ‘womb' that carries our potential. In order for our lives to manifest our full potential, our souls must be healed. In this episode, I share an overview of this concept, and provide ‘7 Steps To Healing The Broken Soul'. Brian's Book Corner We are introducing a new segment this week; a book review and recommendation. Periodically, I will provide a summary review of a book that I am reading, one that I believe will add value to your ‘becoming' process. This week, we are looking at ‘The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth' by John Maxwell. In typical John Maxwell style, he offers a powerful, yet practical insight into some KEYS, what he calls LAWS that if lived out and followed, will result in not only growth, but success and fulfillment on levels unimagined. The Laws: The Law of Intentionality The Law of Awareness The Law of the Mirror The Law of Reflection The Law of Consistency The Law of Environment The Law of Design The Law of Pain The Law of the Ladder The Law of the Rubber band The Law of Trade-offs The Law of Curiosity The Law of Modeling The Law of Expansion The Law of Contribution I have been reading (and listening) to this book. In fact, I am repeating each chapter multiple times as it is really helping me where I am today. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It should be REQUIRED reading on every high school and university campus, AND, every adult should take time to process its contents. It WILL change your life. Healing The Broken Soul In this episode, I want to give you a brief introduction to this topic, and share with you why I believe … EVERY PERSON SHOULD PURSUE HEALING, RECONCILIATION, AND RESTORATION so they can experience the full measure of what God has for their lives. I Thes. 5.23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. While we are saved, redeemed, justified, sanctified, and cleansed, many of us STILL are walking as the world walks; depressed, confused, irrational, defeated, never able to break through to new levels, etc. This is NOT God's will for His people, but there are REAL reasons why things are the way they are. One of these factors is that many believers have BROKEN SOULS. It is the SOUL that must be healed. It is the SOUL that must be liberated and set free. We are TRI-Partied beings. Made after God's image and likeness, we possess three distinct yet related parts in our human existence. We are SPIRIT, SOUL, and BODY. When all three parts are functioning in harmony and completeness, there is RIGHTEOUS, PEACE, and JOY… Sounds like KINGDOM to me! What is the SOUL? Our soul is the part of us that contains our will, our emotions, and our thoughts, which in turn, control the course of our mind and eventually produce actions. Everything that takes place in our mind is housed within the soulish arena of our created being. The soul is the place where memories are kept—good and bad. It is the place where wounds, hurts, disappointments, fears, and our sense of failures are contained. What I carry in this compartment GOVERNS my thoughts, actions, decisions, etc.” Proverbs 23.7 – “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he …” What is a Soul Tie? A soul tie is defined as follows: When the emotions, the mind, and the will of a person becomes entangled to the point where their thoughts are no longer their own (or independent of someone else's); it occurs when a person or entity is unnaturally and/or inordinately affected by the will, emotions, desires, and situations of someone, or something else. NOTE: Not all soul ties are ungodly or detrimental. Types of Soul Ties Relational Soul Ties Covenantal/Vow Soul Ties Allegiance and Alliance Soul Ties Sexual Soul Ties III John 2 …”even as your SOUL prospers.” Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. The Soul The soul contains the thoughts, memories, the will, the intellect That area MUST be healthy and free if the other areas of my life are to prosper. It is inside-out living – If I can get my soul to be free of all unhealthy ties, my life will begin to bear the fruit of all God's promises 7 Steps To Healing The Broken Soul Acknowledge – You can't change … Confess – Bring it into the light Resolve – Be willing to deal with the pain of the root Forgive and Release – Let them go so you can be free Pray – Ask Father to meet you in the moment Receive – Receive healing, forgiveness, and restoration Live and Become – Become the person God created you to be, and live out your true destiny by His grace God longs for you to allow him to heal you completely. Your soul must be healed, and all other areas will become aligned and healthy. Submit yourself to the process, and watch as your life is transformed into something more beautiful than you ever imagined possible. You are HIS child … You are His workmanship. God doesn't make mistakes, and He certainly doesn't make no junk!

Created man: We are made in the image and likeness of God We possess His nature, His qualities, His essence He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit We are Spirit, Soul, and Body For us to function in life at 100%, it is imperative that our WHOLE man be in good working order. In other words, our spirit, our soul, and our body must each be healthy and prospering in order for our life to prosper. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. – I Thes. 5.23 In this episode, I am talking about the SOUL of man. What is the SOUL? Our soul is the part of us that contains our will, our emotions, memories, core/root beliefs, and our thoughts. It is the place where memories are kept—good and bad. It is the place where wounds, hurts, disappointments, fears, and our sense of failures are contained. These in turn, control the course of our mind and produce corresponding actions, decisions, attitudes, pre-suppositions, etc. What I carry in this compartment GOVERNS my thoughts, actions, decisions, etc.” The SOUL is the WOMB It is the carrier and nurturer of SEED Therefore, my life will LOOK LIKE the contents and context of my soulish arena It is the SOUL, when not whole, causes us ill effects as long as they are undiscovered, unaddressed, and not broken. Factors That Shape the Mind and Heart (or SOUL) of Man: As we discuss this list, I ask that you consider this Our SOUL contains ALL the information received by my senses, and that received by feeling and perceiving. What I experience, whether real or perceived, is retained on the hard-drive of my mind, and affects the short and long term health of the soul My experiences are real My perceptions of these experiences form my thoughts My thoughts form my beliefs My beliefs form the patterns of behavior These patterns of behavior produce and ultimately determine the quality and fruit of my life The quality of fruit in my life AFFIRMS what I already believe, good or bad As affirmation occurs, the pattern/cycle starts all over again Here are some examples of factors that shape us … Pre-Natal Memories Childhood Trauma Childhood Memories Rape Molestation Premature Sexual exposure or experience Observed/Perceived Behaviors and Truths Learning Deficiencies Self-Esteem formation Absentee Father Absentee Mother Deficient Father/Mother Relationships Domineering Mother Unhealthy Parental Philosophy and Indoctrination Absence of parental involvement, influence or mentoring Deficient Models for healthy relationships Cultural Environments Social Environments Abandonment Rejection Absence of Affirmation and Praise Overt Criticism Hurtful Words Failure/Mistakes Embarrassment or Shame Faulty image of God as Father Religious legalism Religious Teaching Authority Abuse Manipulation and Control Etc. All these factors, (and so many others), can greatly affect the condition of one's soul. These things shape … Our Emotions Our feelings Our Beliefs Our Guiding Philosophies of Life Our Process Orientation How we see life How we see ourselves How we see others How we view relationshipsHow we handle conflict Etc. These are all SOUL matters – They GOVERN our lives They LIMIT our performance They STEER our relationships They CONTROL our emotional state They SHAPE our worldview Proverbs 23.7 – “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he …” What I hold to be true in my heart and soul, whether true or not, becomes the governing factor in my life. If I believe I am used goods, I am used goods. If I believe I am worthless, I will behave and act like I am worth (less). If I believe that I cannot trust people, I will not trust, even if the person I am in relationship with is trustworthy. If I believe that I will always be poor, then no matter how much Ii want to be prosperous, I will always find a way to remain poor. The Soul is the Key! Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. – III John 2 It is impossible to erase the WHAT's that have happened. It is impossible to erase the WHO's we have come in contact with. It is NOT, however, impossible to have the WHAT'S healed, and the effects of the WHO'S severed and disconnected. Our journey is our journey; we only arrive at a lesser destination if we stop traveling before we get ‘THERE'. Many of us have experienced some of the things we have mentioned here tonight. Because of this, the progress and productivity of our lives have been less than our potential mandates. The SOUL is the key to prosperity, and your SOUL can be healed. QUESTIONS: Take some time for honest reflection concerning your life. Where has your soul been wounded, and your beliefs limited? Do any of the areas we mentioned in this episode apply to you? Are you willing to deal with the hurts and disappointments of your past? If so, are you ready to give those to God? Paul, the apostle, once wrote, "We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope (I Thes 4:13). Hope is a fundamental spiritual need and it is graciously provided to each of us who believe through our savior, Jesus Christ. Because of Jesus, there is hope both beyond this life and within this life. This week we begin a new series entitled “Hope,” and we will be asking the question, “Did Jesus really teach that there is life after death?” Texts I Thes 4:13 and Luke 20:27-40

He has no pleasure in fools. Fulfill your vow. It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it." (Ecclesiasties 5:4-5) Purpose When anyone enters into relationship with God by grace from, and faith in, the person and work of Jesus Christ they are entering into two covenants. The first is to journey with God for the rest of their lives and love Him fully. The second is to journey with His other children in the community of the local church. Your membership in a church is an official recognition of this, and the purposes of the Mars Hill Membership Covenant is: To join the Spirit in forming an authentic church community that reflects the relationship between the Father, Son & Spirit To clarify the on-going blessings & responsibilities of each member. To encourage consistency, accountability and loving unity within the church family. To accomplish God's call for the MH church family. This agreement does not imply that you will never fall short of the goals, but that the desire of your heart is to fulfill each of the responsibilities stated to the best of your ability. We trust that your commitment will be a personal blessing to your own journey in Christ, as well a blessing to those around you. The Facts of Membership • A numerical record was kept (Acts 2:37-47) • Records were kept of widows (I Tim. 5:3-16) • Elections were conducted (Acts 6:1-6) • Discipline was carried out (Matt. 18:15-20; I Cor. 5; Gal. 6:1) • Elders will be held accountable for members (Heb. 13:17) • There was an awareness of who was a church member (Rom. 16:1-16) With the help of the Holy Spirit, the church leadership covenants the following: 1. We commit ourselves to lovingly caring for you and seeking your growth in Christ (Heb. 13:17; I Thes. 5:12). 2. We covenant to provide teaching, preaching and counsel from the Scriptures (Gal. 6:6; I Tim. 5:17-18). 3. We commit that this teaching will span the whole counsel of God's Word (Acts 20:27-28). 4. We commit to helping you in times of need (Acts 2:42-47, 4:32-35, Jm. 2:14- 17). We covenant that your elders and deacons will meet the criteria assigned to them in the Scriptures (I Tim. 3:1-13 & 5:17-22, Titus 1:5-9, I Pt. 5:1-4). We covenant to pray for you regularly, particularly when you are sick (Jm. 5:14). We covenant to be on guard against false teachers (Acts 20:28-31). We covenant to exercise church discipline when necessary (Matt. 18:15-20; I Cor. 5; Gal. 6:1). We covenant to help you become equipped to serve Christ (Eph. 4:11-13). We covenant to seek God's will for our church community to the best of our ability as we study the Scriptures and follow the Spirit (Acts 20:28, I Peter 5:1-5). We covenant to set an example and join you in fulfilling the duties of church members (1 Co. 11.1, Philip. 3:17, I Tim. 4:12 ). With the guiding help of the Holy Spirit, I, the undersigned, covenant the following: 1. I am a Christian who has been saved from my sins by the grace of Jesus Christ. I have been baptized to give testimony of my identification with the body of Christ & obedience to the Scriptures. 2. I have read and understood MH doctrinal statement and agree to not be divisive to its teaching. I also understand the importance of submission to church leadership and will be diligent to preserve unity and peace (Hebrews 13:7, 17; Ephesians 4:1-3) 3. I will endeavor to maintain a close relationship with the Lord through regular personal Bible reading, prayer, fellowship and practice of the other spiritual disciplines. My journey in Christ will be evident through my regular participation in the corporate worship services, and involvement in a small group or class (Ps. 119:97, 105l; Acts 2:42-47; Hebrews 10:23-25). 4. I will strive to properly manage the resources God has given me, including my time, body, gifts and talents, attitudes, finances and possessions (Eph.5:15-18; Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 4:1-16; Gal 5:22-26; Proverbs 3:9-10). This includes regular giving to MH that is sacrificial and cheerful (2 Corinthians 8&9). 5. I commit myself to the MH church family and agree to aid in fulfilling its missional purpose to both be and bring the gospel to Seattle. I recognize that his will be accomplished by pursuing Mars Hill's core values of meaning, beauty, truth, and community. 6. I commit to using the spiritual gift(s) God has given me for the building up of the church, both at MH and universally (I Pt. 4:10-11; Romans 12:1-8, 1Corinthians 12:7-31). 7. I covenant to practice the humility and sacrificial attitude of Christ by considering the needs of others (Philippians 2:1-11), not gossiping (Pr. 16:28, Matt.18: 15-17), and seeking spiritual friendships (Pr. 17:17). 8. I covenant to have friendly Christian relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ from other churches, but I will not function in leadership or as a member in another church family (Hebrews 13:17). 9. I covenant to follow the biblical procedures of church discipline, and submit myself to discipline if the need should ever arise (Matt. 18:15-17,Gal. 6:1-5). 10. I covenant to submit to the authority of the Scriptures as the final arbiter on all issues (Psalm 119, 2 Tim. 3:16-17). God enabling me, I will strive to consider my commitment to this Membership Covenant on a yearly basis. I understand that it is an evaluative tool, as well as an affirmation of my continuing conviction and purpose. My responsibility will be to notify the MH leadership if at any time I can no longer commit to this covenant, or if I have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding MH. Episode 96 Spiritual sensitivity We know that God is Spirit, and those who worship God must do so in spirit and truth. We are also are to be led by the Spirit. How can our spiritual sensitivity be increased so that we can be sure we are truly knowing God in the spirit? It seems at times that so much comes at us that brings confusion so we hardly know which way to turn. How do we know that we are really sensing God in the spirit? Are there some basic principles that can help us? This arises not only in our daily lives, but also in spiritual gifts, ministry, and host of related areas. I believe that there are some guidelines in scripture that can help us. God is Spirit Man is body, soul, and spirit (I Thes. 5:23) Man connects with God in his spirit (I Cor. 2:10-12, 6:17) Three possible sources of spiritual movement (God, Satan, man) Significant areas to consider Seeking God only by our mind (reasoning) A defiled spirit (2 Cor. 7:1) A motive to be somebody “special” in spirituals (Phil. 2:3) A troubled heart, unrest (Isaiah 30:15) Undisciplined desires (James 1:14,15) Undisciplined emotions (2 Peter 1:5-9) Consider the outcome of the leading The Spirit leads in the purpose of God The Spirit leads in unity (with God and one another) The Spirit exalts Jesus Christ The Spirit is the Spirit of truth The Spirit is the Spirit of love Praying in the Spirit (Jude 20) Some good ministry concerning man as body, soul, and spirit http://www.austin-sparks.net/english/books/what_is_man.html Additional resources at http://www.ntchurchsource.com/ Theme song “Will Your Anchor Hold” sung by J. Even though we discussed last week what our lot in life actually is according to I Thes 6, we also acknowledged that if we look around there aren't very many people (including ourselves in most cases) that are living in the reality of that knowledge. This week we begin to look at the key issues to walking in the manifestation of the reality of what the Lord has provided for us! The first step? Realizing that for us, our life is in the Word!!!
Episode 57 Discipline in the Church of God The subject of discipline in the Household of God is a very touchy subject. To avoid the problems, some have concluded that we should never be involved in such things (“Judge not”). Others have done this in a very harsh way that has left severe damage in lives. Is there a right way? Should the church ever discipline members? If so, how? As we look briefly at this subject today, I would encourage us to come carefully to the scriptures and ask God to reveal His mind. I think we all want to do the will of God, and we know that we are our brother’s keeper. Love cares for each member, and the scriptures give some clear direction. Even though discipline is challenging to say the least, love must be a love of action. • Discipline is in the context of the Family of God o The church is universal in scope but local in expression o Members are part by their own choice in faith • Love is expressed in Godly care o Discipline is love in action o Speaking the truth in love is done in relationship (Eph. 4:15-16) • Addressing a need is always progressive (Matt. 18:15-20) o Making a distinction (Jude 22, I Thes. 5:14) o Consistency is critical • A care for the person and the testimony o The expression of every member is important to the local testimony (2 Thes. 3:6-15) o No member is except from accountability (I Cor. 12:20-26) o Teachers are held to a higher standard (James 3:1) • The grace of God and spiritual direction is critical o We should never move beyond the grace of God o We should never stand between another member and Christ • The end goal of any correction or discipline is the restoration of fellowship (Heb. 12:3-12) o God knows the heart, but man judges the outward actions o Fellowship with God is revealed in fellowship with one another (I John) • The church properly expressed is the Temple of God in reality http://www.ntchurchsource.com/literature/read/discipline-in-the-body-of-christ/ • Additional resources at http://www.ntchurchsource.com/ • Theme song “Will Your Anchor Hold” sung by J. Why is it that so many Christians live without financial peace? Peace may often seem to be just beyond arms' reach if you find yourself asking the following questions: Do I make enough money? Why doesn't my money seem to stretch far enough? Am I burdened with too many bills? Does it seem that misfortune only happens to only me? In This Episode We Look At: Discontentment–we may believe the word means "not content." The Hebrew word mãr (discontentment) actually means: bitter, chafed, great bitterness, angry. It's so easy to be discontent. We live in a culture whose recipe for happiness is "More!" The Elusive Key: Gratitude The phrase "give thanks" or "giving thanks" appears 98 times Scripture. "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." I Thes. 5:18 CONTENTMENT: Internal satisfaction which does not demand changes in external circumstances Paul taught that he learned to be content: Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
