„Le Freak“ hat Hits geliefert. Unfassbar viele Hits. Die er entweder geschrieben, produziert oder performt hat – oder alles drei zusammen: „Good Times“, „We Are Family“, „Lost in Music“, „Everybody Dance“, „I Want Your Love“ mit seinen Bands Chic und Sister Sledge. „Upside Down“ von Diana Ross, „Let's Dance“ von David Bowie, „Like a Virgin“ von Madonna.

Wendy James is tied up with some of my earlier memories of music. She fronted the band Transvision Vamp, who were hard to ignore in the late 80s. Songs like “I Want Your Love” and “Baby I Don't Care” were pretty big hits over here. Transvision Vamp split in the early 90s and since then Wendy has persuaded various solo projects. Interestingly her first solo album “Now Ain't The Time For Your Tears” was written by Elvis Costello, sometimes alongside Caitlin O'Riordan from the Pogues. These days Wendy is basically a cottage industry, self releasing albums and embracing direct engagement with her fanbase. She recently released an album entitled “The Shape Of History” and you'll hear clips from that throughout our conversation.

C'est Chic is the second studio album by the iconic disco and funk band Chic, released on August 11, 1978. This album solidified Chic's place as a defining force in late 1970s disco music and pop culture. It features some of the most memorable grooves and polished production of the era, created by the legendary duo Nile Rodgers (guitar) and Bernard Edwards (bass). The album is best known for its international hit "Le Freak", a dancefloor anthem with its unforgettable hook ("Ahh, freak out!") and an iconic bassline that became a hallmark of disco. The track was a massive success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining one of the best-selling singles of all time.Another standout on the album is "I Want Your Love," a smooth yet emotionally charged disco ballad featuring lush orchestration and dreamy vocal harmonies. The rest of the album blends elements of funk, soul, and R&B, all wrapped in Chic's signature style of crisp instrumentation, rhythmic precision, and glamorous flair. Tracks like "Savoir Faire" (a jazzy instrumental) and "Happy Man" highlight their versatility and musical sophistication.C'est Chic is often hailed as a quintessential disco record, combining infectious grooves with sophisticated musicality. It remains a testament to Chic's innovation and influence, not just in disco but across genres that followed, including hip-hop and modern dance music.Listen to the album on SpotifyListen to the album on Apple MusicWhat did you think of this album? Chic is the groove. They were you and the groove of some of your spinning records back in the day. They are currently called Nile Rodgers & Chic. They were known as the Big Apple Band in the 70s. The group was formed in 1972 by guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards. They recorded many commercially successful disco songs like “ Dance Dance Dance ( Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah (1977). “Everybody Dance, Le Freak, I Want Your Love, Good Times, and My Feet Keep Dancing.Chic had the bass guitar, the drums, the keyboards, the horns, and the vocals. CHIC was the galloping guitar of Nile Rodgers and the bubbling bass of Bernard Edwards. Their hits, including Dance Dance Dance, Everybody Dance, Le Freak, The Greatest Dancer,I Want Your Love and Good Times created a sophisticated, classy funk elevated by Rodgers' inventive arrangements. Nile talks about his life, his influences and his productions of artists such as Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Sister Sledge, Carly Simon and Diana Ross. Ximeno Records was co-founded by Danny Holloway and Aaron Paar in 2011 and releases limited-run vinyl 45s, focusing mainly on rare, funky vintage reggae and soul cuts. Aimed with DJs and selectors in mind, Ximeno has released though cover versions of tracks like “Let It Whip”, “I Want Your Love,” and “Rock With U” by artists including Derrick Harriot, Grace Jackson, Blood Sisters, Skatalites and Tappa Zukie. Check their Discogs page for more selections (https://www.discogs.com/label/482668-Ximeno-Records). Holloway and Paar first experimented with a 200-pressing 45, when it sold out quickly, and records number two and three also sold out, they knew they were on to something. Says Paar, “A lot of the ideas came from from Danny Holloway’s personal (record) collection; we would discuss and I would recommended the tracks I thought would work for DJs — things that people could play in the clubs right away. We’ve released a lot of reggae boogie or disco covers, and funkier tracks like “Melting Pot” by Underground Vegetables. Danny and I just combined our knowledge to give DJs something in our bag and make it more accessible.” Now enjoy this mix by Paar, who rep’s Umoja Hi-Fi and Worldship Records in addition to Ximeno. This mix is an Umoja Hi-Fi exclusive of the first 10 Ximeno singles.

This week we’ve partnered with the Songwriters Hall of Fame to bring you the final episode of Season 5, which features our special guest host, Hannah Karp, editorial director of Billboard. Among music legends, this guest is truly exceptional. He amplifies his legacy as a multiple GRAMMY-winning composer, producer, arranger, and guitarist by constantly traversing new musical terrain and successfully expanding the boundaries of popular music. As the co-founder of CHIC and the newly elected Chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he pioneered a musical language that generated chart-topping hits like “Le Freak,” (the biggest selling single in the history of Atlantic Records) and sparked the advent of hip-hop with “Good Times”. New York, NY (April 11, 2017) – Alfa Anderson, former member of the iconic funk soul band Chic (Le Freak, Good Times, Everybody Dance), will release a new single, "When Luther Sings," in honor of her longtime friend Luther Vandross 66th birthday.  The rousing, heartfelt tribute is written by Anderson and co-produced by multi-talented Bert Price.  Available nationwide on April 20, When Luther Sings is the first single from Anderson’s long-awaited debut solo album, From My Heart (set for release summer 2017).  “When Luther Sings is my homage to good friend and musical mentor Luther Vandross; the song is autobiographical in many ways,” said Anderson. “As our professional relationship grew, he taught me so much about vocal technique and stage presence.  As a matter of fact, Luther is one of the co-creators of the Chic vocal sound.  I am forever grateful for the doors he opened for me and for the golden friendship we shared. For years, Anderson was an integral member of Vandross' touring band and performed at Wembley Stadium, among many other prestigious venues around the world.  Her vocals can be heard on popular Vandross albums such as Give Me the Reason and The Night I Fell in Love, which Rolling Stone Magazine voted as one of the 100 Best Albums of the Eighties.  It was Vandross who invited Anderson to a vocal session for Chic with Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, Tony Thompson and Norma Jean Wright. ”Chic went on to see commercial success with disco songs that include "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" (1977), "Everybody Dance" (1977), "Le Freak" (1978), "I Want Your Love" (1978), "Good Times" (1979), and "My Forbidden Lover" (1979).
