So like AI is not the product. LLMs are not the product. A lot of people get caught up in the innovation, like the technology if you will, but people don't buy AI. People don't buy LLMs. They buy tools and products that like solve their own problems in the world. The Hunters and Unicorns session with Anant Bhardwaj, Founder and CEO of Instabase unveiled an extraordinary journey, starting from humble beginnings to becoming the visionary founder of a groundbreaking AI company, Instabase. The emphasis on developing applications around real-world use cases struck a chord, highlighting the need to identify broader relevance beyond a specific scenario for achieving impactful market fit. Key Takeaways; 1. Early Life and Education: Grew up in a rural part of India called Nalanda, Bihar, without modern amenities. Initially struggled adjusting to a city environment due to a shift in language and educational medium to English. 2. Career Aspirations: Initially wanted to join the Army like family members but was rejected due to colour blindness. Had an interest in literature, poetry, and writing but was discouraged from pursuing it as a career. 3. Academic Journey: Accidentally got into computer science during college in India and discovered a passion for programming. Moved to the US for a master's at Stanford but felt pressure to start a company during this time. Pursued research projects at MIT, one of which was Data Hub, exploring abstracting complex data for diverse applications. Faced challenges with visa status and legal issues but was supported by MIT during this period. 4. Formation of Databricks: Founded Databricks without a clear commercial application but had an academic focus initially. Initially targeted academia, providing free products to professors and students at various universities. 5. Discovery of Commercial Use: Identified a commercial use case with companies like Zenefits and Lending Club needing data extraction from diverse sources like PDFs and images. 6. Product Development and Market Fit: Iterated the product based on market needs and feedback, eventually finding a product-market fit in data extraction and analysis for various industries. Emphasized a fearless and experimental approach to adapt to new opportunities and discover viable product uses. 7. Key Advice from Martin Casado: "Use cases precede the product; product precedes the platform; platform precedes the ecosystem." Don't build a product without understanding the use case it solves. Don't build a platform without a real product. A platform allows value creation by someone other than the creator. 8. Discovery of Product-Market Fit: Understand the key drivers and drags for customers; drivers are critical to why they buy. Find the one or two core drivers that make customers want to buy your product. Prioritize features that cater to these key drivers and address critical pain points. 9. Approach to Product Development: Engage in parallel experimentation to find both the use cases and the right product. Engage early customers to help validate and define the product, ensuring it addresses their needs. Focus on problems applicable across a wide range of industries to have a broad market impact. 10. Building a Platform: Allow customers to create value by building their own apps on your platform. Separate the product from custom services and prioritize building a scalable product. Be open to iterating and adjusting the product based on customer feedback and use cases. 11. Ecosystem Building: Move towards creating an ecosystem by enabling third-party developers to build on the platform. Aim for apps built by one entity to be usable and valuable for another, promoting a broader ecosystem. 12. Early Growth and Funding: Achieved significant growth from $250k to $5 million in a year, gaining investor interest. Raised funding at a $1 billion valuation in 2019 due to perceived strong product-market fit. 13. Challenges in Scaling Sales: Initially, sales were handled by the founder, but transitioning to a sales team required careful planning. Incorrect hiring and lack of understanding of sales dynamics led to a wasted year in scaling sales. 14. Building an Effective Sales Team: Hiring salespeople requires careful consideration of ramp-up times, quotas, and net new revenue targets. Defined sales process stages: first meeting, technical deep dive, proof of value, success criteria, business value, commercial and pricing, legal. 15. Sales Process and Experimentation: Focused on identifying and repeating successful use cases to drive sales effectively. Employed a small growth team for experimentation and exploration of new use cases and verticals. Launched a self-serve product (iHub) to understand the market, not focusing on specific deal sizes initially. 16. Sales Velocity and Incentives: Emphasized velocity of feedback and signal collection over deal size to learn from a larger customer base. Experimenting with sales team incentives to encourage high-velocity growth and learning from a diverse customer set. Episode 3 of 'The Founders Edition' is not to be missed!

Instabase's Ozge Ozcan believes that many women have been fed a false story about motherhood: That it can be seen as a “decelerator” to one's career. Instead, she's found that raising two daughters has made her more competent in the chaotic, fast-paced world of early-stage startups. Through this experience, she's had to learn how to be an “amazing leader” at home and in the office. In this episode, Ozge and Joubin talk about her experience as an immigrant to the US from Turkey; the surprises she encountered taking her first real job at a then-much smaller MongoDB; how she's learned to prioritize family over work, or vice versa; the challenges of running a customer success team; and how she has been able to hire more than 60 people in only a year at Instabase. In this episode, we cover: The dualities of Ozge's home country, Turkey, and how she learned English (05:12) Wrestling with guilt in all aspects of her life, and raising two daughters with her husband (09:35) Understanding your triggers before burnout takes hold, and the dark side of grit (14:48) Working at MongoDB, “there was so much emphasis” on feeling (22:18) Spotting and fixing broken processes in enterprise tech, and when to apply old-school problem-solving (26:15) A common misconception about how pregnancy and motherhood affect women's ability to thrive at work (35:03) What Instabase does and why Ozge decided to join another early-stage company (37:18) The importance of metrics for customer success (41:00) Recruiting for CS teams and the non-negotiable skill Ozge looks for: A high tolerance for ambiguity (44:18) What she says when startup founders ask, “How do I set up a CS team?” (50:01) Links: Connect with Ozge LinkedIn Email: ozge.ozcan@instabase.com Connect with Joubin Twitter LinkedIn Email: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner Perkins
This week we are thrilled to feature Anant Bhardwaj on our podcast. Anant Bhardwaj is the Founder and CEO of Instabase, the horizontal application platform that employs deep learning to solve unstructured data problems. It has reimagined how businesses build, run and share software applications, changing how they operate. Under Anant's leadership, Instabase raised $130 million in funding and reached unicorn status just four years after launching in 2015. While working on his Ph.D. at MIT, Anant realized businesses needed one horizontal platform where enterprise applications could be easily created and used. To solve this, he built a platform, now Instabase, that enterprises such as Standard Chartered began to test building applications on. Today, Bhardwaj's Instabase is a trusted platform used by top financial and insurance companies, including customers like NatWest, Standard Chartered, and Gusto to automate complex business processes from processing the largest volume of paycheck protection loans in the country to automating the entire insurance claims process. Tune into this week's episode to learn more about building the underlying foundation.

I want to dispel this art into such a science that I can create an elite sales force without having to hire lions - just brilliant, determined people that can learn.” - Luke Rogers Hunters and Unicorns shares the playbooks from leaders, founders, executives and investors from high growth technology companies. In this special edition series The 33 CXOs we investigate the greatest success story in the history of software sales. Discover how thirty-three sales execs from one organisation, BladeLogic, became CXOs in the world's 100 fastest growing technology companies. We uncover the stories and playbooks of the most prolific sales leaders in the industry. Episode 1 features Luke Rogers, VP of Sales at Instabase. Luke founded his first company at the age of 15. Selling computers online, Luke grew the business from zero to a quarter of a million turnover annually before he had even finished high school and experienced such explosive growth that he was able to leave home and fund his own university education. His degree in artificial intelligence and cybernetics combined with over a decade of enterprise sales experience has equipped Luke with a rich technical and business skill set. He believes that experience is the least important quality when building an elite go to market team and has dedicated his career to teaching sales as a science and diversifying the tech landscape through empowering and recruiting new voices into sales. Prior to joining Instabase, Luke was part of the team that helped take AppDynamics from $100M to a $3.7bn sale to Cisco in just four years. His current role at Instabase not only unlocks the next phase of growth for Luke, but also provides an opportunity for him to pay it forward and help change the lives of his teams and customers. “If you make it simple and merit based then people will thrive and if you give them the right training and the right mentoring, people can achieve things that they didn't think were possible. That's what happened to me.” After university, Luke worked for two of the largest tech companies on the planet, Cisco and IBM, but his hunger for growth, continuous learning, and making an impact led him to seek new opportunities in an environment that would challenge him to do better every day. He knew what he was looking for and when he met Jeremy Duggan, VP of Silicon Valley's newest “unicorn”, AppDynamics, he knew had found it. Although Luke had never sold software before, his confidence, determination and “do whatever it takes” mentality shone through and secured him a role that would transform his career. With an industry veteran as his mentor and in an environment where “everyone was running as fast as they possibly could”, Luke “left his bags at the door” and became a disciple of Jeremy's playbook, following the process exactly, learning it and living it better than anyone else. He received the training and enablement he needed to develop and become a master of his craft and learnt lessons in entrepreneurship that changed his life. Luke developed into the inspirational leader he is today, committed to supporting and progressing his teams whilst maintaining and developing a culture of respect, excellence, and diversity. “If we keep fishing in the same ponds, we're going to keep hiring the same people and end up with the same types of teams, and the same types of leaders, but it's new leaders that come from those different backgrounds that are diverse - they're the ones that are going to change things because they'll hire different people and then everything will change. That's what we need to do and that is important to me.” In this vodcast you will discover: The framework that enabled Luke to transition from having zero software sales experience to leading and managing teams and closing $10 million deals. What motivates Luke to succeed and how Jeremy's belief in him has shaped him as a leader. How Luke has maintained high performance throughout his career – his personal drive and future mission. Luke's role as VP of Sales at Instabase and what he looks for when hiring. Luke Rogers is dedicated to creating and developing a new generation of sales legends and adding meaningful value to people and organizations in a methodical and disciplined way. As his incredible career journey continues to reshape and take new turns, we cannot wait to see the next phase of his growth. We discuss all of this and more in this insightful and inspiring discussion – a special opportunity for those with an interest in sales strategy, as well as anyone with a passion for the technology space to gain valuable insight into this industry.
