The roots of China's space ambitions go back to 1957 when the Soviet Union successfully launched the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik-1, into space. That year, Chairman Mao Zedong declared China would also launch its own satellite. With the help of Soviet technology and scientists such as Qian Xuesen, who studied and initially worked in the United States but was deported for allegedly being a communist sympathiser, the country established its space programme. In July 1964, China took its first official step into space, launching and recovering an experimental biological rocket carrying white mice. In this episode of All Things Policy, Rakshith Shetty quizzes Dr Gunjan Singh on China's Space Program. From its historical roots to future ambitions, join us for expert insights and analysis on one of the most exciting frontiers of modern exploration. The Space Development Agency is working with the Army to provide alternative positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) capabilities that are not dependent on GPS through its Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, SDA Director Derek Tournear said. Tournear said the Army has an alternate PNT signal that can be picked up by the Military GPS User Equipment (MGUE) Increment 2 chips. Once fielded, the MGUE chips will be able to use M-code — a new military signal that is jam-resistant and more secure. “We're working very closely with the Army, who's been pioneering the alt-PNT across the Department of Defense,” Tournear said at a National Security Space Association event last week. “We're working with them to be able to broadcast that same signal so it can be picked up by existing, fielded and planned user equipment, so there'll be no modifications.” Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to the first episode of our annual Summer Season specials. We've just completed Season 4 and Season 5 is currently scheduled to start on September 27. Between now and then we'll be featuring weekly interviews or presentations from other content creators. Today we have a Future-in-Space Operations presentation from April of this year. The presenter is Mike Lindsey, CTO of Astroscale who discusses the need for satellite life extension services, active debris removal, their technology and offerings. We offer this presentation now as Astroscale's ELSA-D mission successfully demonstrated repeated magnetic capture of a clients satellite last week. In his presentation Mike states Space Development Demands Sustainability. This has never been more true. Space debris is, and has been a problem since the early days of the space age. While most space actors are taking sustainability into account, the issue of legacy debris is a problem still without a cost-effective solution. Companies like Astroscale are tying to make the business case by offering innovative solutions. They aren't offering to clean up legacy debris, but what they are attempting is a good first step. As new ideas, technologies, and importantly, business solutions come into existence, we can only hope that all space debris, legacy and new, can be removed safely.

Does anyone else remember when the President announced he was creating a 6th wing of the military, which he proudly dubbed the “Space Force?” This episode features an interview with Jacqueline Klimas, a National Defense reporter at Politico, who breaks down what Trump actually accomplished after he announced his intent to create a military force dedicated to space operations. It turns out that the Space Force is already taking shape under the Department of Defense, and there aren’t any space marines or laser beams involved. Klimas explains why a Space Force is surprisingly necessary while discussing and debunking popular expectations of a Star Wars-esque division of astronaut troopers. An interview with MediaFile Editor in Chief Rob Cline follows up on Klimas’ take on Space Force and how it’s a part of the race for next-gen tech like 5-G and AI.   In this episode I talk to Dr James Schwartz. James teaches philosophy at Wichita State University.  His primary area of research is philosophy and ethics of space exploration, where he defends a position according to which space exploration derives its value primarily from the importance of the scientific study of the Solar System.  He is editor (with Tony Milligan) of The Ethics of Space Exploration (Springer 2016) and his publications have appeared in Advances in Space Research, Space Policy, Acta Astronautica, Astropolitics, Environmental Ethics, Ethics & the Environment, and Philosophia Mathematica.  He has also contributed chapters to The Meaning of Liberty Beyond Earth, Human Governance Beyond Earth, Dissent, Revolution and Liberty Beyond Earth (each edited by Charles Cockell), and to Yearbook on Space Policy 2015.  He is currently working on a book project, The Value of Space Science.  We talk about all things space-related, including the scientific case for space exploration and the myths that befuddle space advocacy. You can download the episode here or listen below. You can also subscribe on Stitcher and iTunes (the RSS feed is here).Show Notes0:00 - Introduction1:40 - Why did James get interested in the philosophy of space?3:17 - Is interest in the philosophy and ethics of space exploration on the rise?6:05 - Do space ethicists always say "no"?8:20 - Do we have a duty to explore space? E‘ autore di numerose pubblicazioni su riviste economiche internazionali, e di alcuni libri: German Macroeconomic History, 1880–1979: A Study of the Effects of Economic Policy on Inflation, Currency, Depreciation and Growth (St. Martin’s Press, 1987), The ECU market (Lexington Books, 1987), A Scenario for Interstellar Exploration and Its Financing (Springer Briefs in Space Development, 2013 with Prof. Bignami),  Oro dagli Asteroidi ed Asparagi da Marte: Realtà e Miti dell’Esplorazione dello Spazio (Modadori Università, 2015 con il Prof. Bignami); and The future of Human Space Exploration (MacMillan Palgrave, June 2016 con il Prof. Bignami). Ha scritto numerosi articoli sulle politiche monetarie e bancarie. Recentemente ha scritto due articoli sull’esplorazione dello spazio e sull’economia dello spazio: Motivations behind Interstellar Exploration and Colonization, (Astropolitics, March 2014), and Rationale and strategies for astroids exploration and mining (Astropolitics, March 2015).
