Gladys Knight and the Pips were two decades into their career when they released their signature song, “Midnight Train to Georgia”. Formed in 1952, the legendary band was comprised of Gladys Knight, her brother Bubba Knight and their cousins William Guest and Edward Patten. They were originally signed to Motown Records in1966 but found their time on the label to be an uphill battle, with acts like Marvin Gaye, the Temptations and the Supremes given priority. Their eventual 1973 signing to Buddha Records ended up giving them an unexpected fresh start. For their debut single on the label, they recorded a new version of Jim Weatherly's folky track "Midnight Plane to Houston,” pulling from a Cissy Houston cover of Weatherly's song that had already changed the city and mode of transportation in the title. The rest is history, with "Midnight Train to Georgia" becoming the group's biggest and most signature track.  On this week's episode our hosts are joined by the song's engineer and mixer Ed Stadium, who shares the fascinating history of how this song came together, as well as an alternate version of the song from his archives. Listen in as they explore why this track remains a standout in the group's illustrious career and the emotional depth that Gladys Knight's voice brings to the song.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode # 206 Rocker Mitch Malloy releases New Solo Album "The Last Song," his time in Van Halen and much more! MITCH MALLOY RETURNS WITH NEW SOLO ALBUM, ‘THE LAST SONG' FROM SING MARKET Mitch Malloy continues to rock the night away burning the midnight oil! After several years as the frontman for the iconic rock band Great White, Mitch returned to the studio writing and recording his new album, ‘THE LAST SONG.' The album will launch with an exclusive, limited release collector's edition vinyl through a partnership with SING. Pre-sales for the vinyl release will go on sale May 3, 2023. An international release will follow in June. Once again, Mitch is undertaking an album solely by himself from start to finish – song writing, producing, instruments, mixing and mastering. Mitch reveals, “For this record, I have really taken my time. In the past, I've usually been on deadlines. With this album, there was so much material in my head from a few years of not having a true creative outlet, so it was a lot to process. I'm thankful that I have been in a position to not rush my creativity. I've been tucked away in my Zen zone writing and recording... and amassing lots of new gear! Ha!” ‘THE LAST SONG' DELUXE PACKAGE will be released worldwide first on SING Market as a limited edition collectible 180 gram signed and numbered white vinyl record. This special vinyl bundle includes a signed CD, large poster, 8" X 10" photo, and more. All of this is attached to a limited, numbered and registered digital collectable bundle packed with behind-the-scenes videos, acoustic videos, a rare handwritten lyric sheet, and a Golden Ticket contest to win a private zoom concert where you hang with Mitch! After this very limited vinyl - digital collectable VIP bundle is gone - it's gone! Follow this link to purchase: https://market.singidea.com/market/asset/2abdeae1-ddbf-4d97-bd7a-8d345422ec0a/ Unboxing video here: https://vimeo.com/823080034?share=copy/ In addition to being an artist, Mitch is no stranger to the studio, and has worked with a variety of artists, labels, and brands from Taylor Swift, Boys Like Girls, Kenny Loggins, Craig Morgan, and Sony Music NY, to singer/songwriters Victoria Show, Gary Burr and Billy Falcon, and even voiceover work for Outdoor Channel, Field & Stream and many more. Mitch has even been the voice for Starburst candy! Mitch is also an award-winning songwriter, and has written with legendary songwriters like Jim Weatherly, Richard Lee, Mike Reid, Desmond Child, Dennis Morgan, Victoria Shaw and Gray Burr. He's been signed to publishing deals with Warner Chappell and Chrysalis Music, but later launched his own publishing company to control his copyrights. Mitch loves the craft of songwriting... telling a story and resonating with his audience. "Songs are so powerful... it's amazing just how much a song can impact a person's life," says Malloy. “Once again, life has delivered a lot of new material... from losing family members, to moving to the beach, to having a teenager. There's definitely no shortage of inspiration!” Mitch's tenure as an artist has spanned several decades beginning as a regular on the New York music scene in the 80s. Mitch soon garnered a major recording deal with RCA/BMG Worldwide, and achieved success on the pop and rock charts, landed a coveted spot on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and has toured globally. Mitch's voice has been highly sought after as a frontman for legendary acts as well as a guest vocalist on other artists' projects. In the mid-90s, Mitch was asked to replace Sammy Hagar as lead singer for Van Halen. But after spending time and recording with the band he declined. “When the band appeared on the MTV Music Awards with Dave [David Lee Roth], the fans expected his return – I expected his return. I felt as cool as the opportunity was, it just wasn't the right time,” said Malloy. Lastly, if you miss out on the SING Market bundles, ‘THE LAST SONG' CD (alone) will be available in the US on Malloy's label, Godsend Records, and internationally by Cargo Records based in the UK. Mitch looks forward to getting back out on the road and connecting with his fans in person. So, will this be the last song? According to Mitch, “Give it a listen, and you tell me!” “My hope with ‘The Last Song' record is that when listening you will experience some of the experiences and feelings and emotions I had while making it. If that happens then the world is a better place through music. And as always, I gave it everything I had. Crank it and enjoy!” https://www.youtube.com/@mitchmalloy3468/ https://www.facebook.com/MitchMalloyMusic/ https://www.mitchmalloy.com/ https://twitter.com/mitchmalloy/ https://www.instagram.com/malloymitch/ singmarket.com/ Subscribe to Pat's Soundbytes Unplugged Podcast, Pat's Soundbytes IGTV and Pat's Soundbytes Unplugged - Podcast Radio Show on YouTube for all the interviews and incredible content. Do y'all hear it's horn?…. Today's topic .. Gladys Knight and the Pips .. Midnight Train to Georgia.Midnight Train to Georgia is a 1973 number one hit single by Gladys Knight & the Pips. Their second release after departing Motown Records for Buddha Records. The song was written by Jim Weatherly. It was based on a conversation he had with someone about taking a midnight plane to Houston. The song was sent to a guy named Sonny Limbo in Atlanta, and he wanted to cut it with Cissy Houston. He asked if the title could be changed to Midnight Train to Georgia. Jim didn't mind.Gospel soul singer Cissy Houston recorded the song as Midnite Train to Georgia released in 1973. The Weatherly's publisher forwarded the song to Gladys Knight and the Pips, who followed Houston's lead and kept the title Midnight Train to Georgia.Like the person in the song that Gladys Knight was singing about, some of you may have moved away to achieve your dream. Some make it and some don't. Gladys plays the part to support her man. She would rather leave her world to live in his world. That world was LA. But in the end, her man went on back to Georgia. How many of you went away and came back? There's nothing wrong with that, and it doesn't mean to stop trying to achieve the dream.I'm Gail Nobles This has been an Eplanae Moment. The story behind a song. Gladys Knight and the Pips - Midnight Train to Georgia.

This week we welcome Bob Davidson and Jason D. Williams! Bob Davidson, After following in his father's footsteps and playing alongside him in a band, Bob worked in Kimberling City with Jim Weatherly's Ozark Jamboree at the age of 9. Bob never played many sports and instead chose to follow the musical path. After graduating high school, Bob went to work for Lee Mace at Lee Mace's Ozark Opry in Osage Beach, and then became part of the Ozark Country Jubilee, which came to Branson in 1979. Bob decided to head out and play the road venues after six years in Branson, eventually relocating to Nashville. He did solo gigs and some carpentry work to “pay the bills.” A few years back, Bob got that rambling fever and decided to give Branson one more shot in 2009. Bob returned to Branson in 2010 with a show titled Swingin’ Doors Country Music Show at the Clay Cooper Theatre. In 2011 he joined Down Home Country at Grand Country and performed there for five years. In June 2017, Bob rededicated his life to Christ. “God laid upon my heart to write songs of love, hope, and faith because the ‘Old was gone and the new had come’ (2 Corinthians 5:17),” Bob said. “It all began when I laid it all at the foot of the cross. You see, after many years of playing the honky-tonks and writing Country music, I had found that missing piece of the puzzle. Yes, my Lord and Savior said, ‘Pick up your cross and follow Me,’” Bob stated. Bob continued, “By God’s grace and 10 songs later, hours upon hours in the studio and many sleepless nights writing an entirely new project, God revealed to me His plan for my life: to share the Gospel through a brand new music ministry, which the guys in the studio refer to as ‘Bob Style Gospel’. There’s really no other way to describe it.” With a new album and renewed faith Bob has a new sound and music ministry. To book a performance or get his new album, visit: MusicByBobDavidson.com. You can also follow Bob Davidson Music Ministries on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and SoundCloud. Jason D. Williams has spent a lifetime behind the piano connecting with country and rock 'n' roll greats while creating a persona that's 100 percent original. After decades of being celebrated for his take-no-prisoners approach to performing country and rock 'n' roll penned by others, Williams has added a new element to his artistry, songwriting. The rock 'n' roll history of Memphis looms large in Williams' world. He recorded for RCA and Sun Records in the 1980s and '90s, and returned to the recording fold in 2010 and has continued steady since. At the age of 16, Williams left his tiny hometown of El Dorado, Ark., to perform
with LaBeef who had set up a base of operations in northeast Massachusetts.
Williams, who continues to work with LaBeef on occasion, went solo in the late 1980s and found a steady home at Mallards in the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN when a snowstorm stranded him a few steps from the Peabody door, quickly he attracted a following and the rest, as they say, is history. After several years, he left after signing with RCA, which released his first album, "Tore Up," and he stayed on the road after Sun Records issued "Wild" in 1993. "Don’t Get None Onya’," released in 2004, captured the power of his blend of honky-tonk country and Memphis rock 'n' roll and was the birth of his own label. “Rockin”, “Killer Instincts” and “Recycled” soon followed and the latest album is in progress now. Williams is also no stranger to large motion pictures, movies as we call them. Williams performed all of the hand shots for the movie “Great Balls of Fire” starring a young Dennis Quaid and was also featured in “The War Room” documenting Bill Clinton’s race for the White House. He’s also had numerous television appearances and various shows on MTV, VH1 and CMT. A wild man onstage, Jason accredits influences like Jerry Lee Lewis, Moon Mullican, Memphis Slim and Al Jolson, for helping to develop his vast repertoire and seemingly endless energy. “I’ve always welcomed the comparisons; my influences were some of the greatest entertainers ever to be seen.” Jason continues to tour more than 160 shows a year. For more information on Jason visit his website: RockinJasonDWilliams.com; or find him on Facebook. His music can be found on YouTube Music, Spotify, Pandora, Deezer and iHeartRadio.

When you list the greatest singer/songwriters of the rock era, it will not be long before the name Jim Croce appears. Rob shares that this fifth and final album entitled “I Got a Name” was posthumously released in December after Croce’s tragic death in an airplane accident in September of 1973. The pilot struck a pecan tree at the end of the runway - the only tree in the area - killing all 5 on board a small plane in Nachez, Louisiana. Croce was the child of Italian immigrants and grew up in south Philadelphia. He got his start playing fraternity parties and coffee houses. We hope you enjoy this feature album from this outstanding folk rock singer-songwriter who passed too soon. “I Got a Name” This well known title track was the first single from the album, released the day after Croce's death. “Lovers Cross” This song is about the downsides of a relationship in which one partner is too dependent on the other for their happiness. “And bridges are meant for burnin' when the people and memories they join aren't the same.” “Five Short Minutes” And this one is a cautionary tale about sleeping with groupies who are too young! “Because five short minutes of lovin' done brought me twenty long years in jail.” “Working at the Carwash Blues” This track tells the story of an ex-con who got a job at a car wash after his time in prison. It was the fourth single released. Gonzo did a cover of this song on “The Muppet Show.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “The Entertainer” from the movie “The Sting” This Scott Joplin ragtime song was featured in the blockbuster film "The Sting" starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman. STAFF PICKS: “Midnight Train to Georgia” by Gladys Knight & The Pips This Grammy-winning song was a cover of a song originally entitled “Midnight Plane to Houston,” and Bruce adds, it was inspired by a conversation writer Jim Weatherly had with Farrah Fawcett. “Smokin' in the Boy's Room” by Brownsville Station Brian's staff pick is perhaps better known from the Motley Crue cover. It was originally entitled “Smokin' in the Theater,” and was the song that moved Brownsville Station from a regional band to a national one. “If You Wanna Get to Heaven” by Ozark Mountain Daredevils Wayne picks a southern country-rock song. The Ozark Mountain Daredevils hailed from Springfield, Missouri, and chose to stick around the state rather than chase a larger audience in Los Angeles or other cities with a larger music scene. “Hello, It's Me” by Todd Rundgren Rob's staff pick is one of the big songs from Philly's Todd Rundgren. This song was recorded three different times, this one being his solo hit. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK: “Love's Theme” by Love Unlimited Orchestra We exit this podcast on an instrumental disco hit that was from a group formed by Barry White.

After establishing himself as a college football star in Mississippi, Jim Weatherly moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. He eventually found success as a songwriter, and is best known for penning “Midnight Train to Georgia,” a #1 pop and R&B hit for Gladys Knight and the Pips that would go on to be named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and earn induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Gladys and her Pips recorded a dozen of Weatherly’s songs, including the Top 10 hits “Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye)”  “Where Peaceful Waters Flow,” “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me,” and “Love Finds Its Own Way.” It wasn’t uncommon for Jim to appear on both the pop and country charts simultaneously with different versions of the same song. Bob Luman scored a Top 10 country hit with “Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye)” while Ray Price hit the top of the country chart with his version of “You’re the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me.” Price would record nearly 40 Jim Weatherly songs, including the Top 5 hits “Like Old Times Again” and “Roses and Love Songs.” Thanks, in part, to Ray Price’s success, Jim was named ASCAP’s Country Songwriter of the Year in 1974. Additional hits from the Weatherly songbook include Charley Pride’s #1 single “Where Do I Put Her Memory,” Ed Bruce’s Top 5 hit “You Turn Me On (Like a Radio),” Glen Campbell’s Top 5, “A Lady Like You,” and Bryan White’s #1 single “Someone Else’s Star.” Other artists who’ve recorded Jim’s songs include Eddy Arnold, Reba McEntire, Dean Martin, Vince Gill, Etta James, Neil Diamond, Bill Anderson, Kenny Rogers, Hall & Oates, The Temptations, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Peter Cetera, and Angie Stone. As an artist, Jim earned a Top 10 pop hit with “Need to Be” and a Top 10 country hit with “I’ll Still Love You.” The Grammy nominee and Dove award winner was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014.
