In this audio essay, I roam from post-war France to the abstract expressionists to the artists of the East Village and even to outer space to consider times in art history when art was forced to bloom in the dark. In this episoe I try to get Ivar Hackscher and Jay Gilligan to help me further my understanding about the difference between concrete and abstract performance. The topic is complex and our routes into its terrain circuitous. Some of the topics touched on:-Necessity, freedom and play.Arthus Zajonc's book Meditation as contemplative inquiry-How does thoughts and words pop into our minds as response to stimuli from the world or even ourselves?-A juggling exercise where one juggler has to respond to a short juggling trick done by another juggler with a juggling trick of their own. Like a no rule juggling dialogue.-How this question of what comes next in a dialogue relates to plant morphonogy and metamorphosis-Audience sacrifices time and attention when watching a performancethought, feeling and action.-Finding a line of inquiry and following it to the end - conclusion.-It's time to let artforms use us artists rather than the other way around.-What does each artform want to express? Each one has a sweet spot for what it expresses.-Can we expect audiences to ever reliably see in our work what we put, or think we put into it?-on the difference between pictures and performance.-Act as Organism-The attraction we have to watching skill is similar to the attraction we feel towards watching ideas thought through to the end.-whats the place for virtouosity today?-300 years ago people wanted to see perfection. This is not as key today. They want something real.emotional telegraphing is particularly attractive today. Maybe more so than technical skill.-Life and warmth in performance-Perfect means that something is done. Finished.-We dont listen to hear that final chord.-Rennesaince music often ends open ended-Joan Miro and Jackson Pollock and the relation of meaning, intent and ideas in abstract art-Jackson Pollock was a dancer more than a painter. The paintings are what's left behind after his dances. So full of will and action.-I see so much abstract art which doesnt say anything to me.-Juggling IS abstract so to just juggle is NOT TAKING ANY CHOICES-Abstract with inteniton. If we notice intention its no longer "abstract nonsense"-If you dont have intention and that's not visible then we get confused work.-Why is there so little intent isible in so much abstract work?-A lot of artists get away with being lazy.-Artists often rely on the structures of the artform like the way an audience sits in a theatre and necesarrily have to watch the show unfolding in time and must assume that each thing that happens on the stage is related to what came before. Have you ever wanted a Picasso on your walls – or maybe a Joan Miro, a Chagall, or perhaps a Raoul Dufy? For a time in the mid-50s in America you could buy work by these artists for just a few dollars: that's a few dollars a yard, because these were fabrics and not original paintings – but they were beautifully designed, sophisticated, and elegant.  As peace crept back after World War Two there was an intense hunger for new design. After five long years of uniforms, and sacrifice, people wanted something interesting to wear, and colourful fabrics to decorate their homes with. In America manufacturers were quick to turn their machines from military production to domestic demand.  This episode of Haptic & Hue is about how fresh and fashionable textiles were amongst the first items people were able to enjoy in the post-war period.  It focuses on a short period when manufacturers turned to established artists, like Picasso, Raoul Dufy, Marc Chagall and Miro, to help them create brilliant new textiles. It looks in particular at Daniel B Fuller's attempt to build what he called “A Museum Without Walls' with his Modern Masters series of textiles in the 1950s. It is also about what grew out of that, and tells the story of a young artist, unknown at the time, who worked for these same textile producers as a pattern designer, using his experience and skills to change the face of twentieth century art. Joan Miro's Bleu II punctuates the middle of a three part series. This one sits at center for good reason. It grounds the blue triptych with solid strength. Red slashes one side of the blue canvas, yet this masterpiece seems balanced. My favorite thing about Miro is the way his imagery shifts between recognition and intrigue. We see that with this Zen garden masterpiece on a bed of brilliant cobalt. Read LadyKflo's collected works. Hello DT fam! This week on the DT Podcast we’re making a drawing based on an old surrealist drawing practice: Automatic Drawing. Popularized in the early 1900’s automatic drawing by famous artists like Andre Breton and Joan Miro, this exercise helps us get out of our busy brains into our instinctual bodies. When we let our bodies take the lead, it’s surprising what reveals itself on the page. I’ll share more about the history of Automatic Drawing and body/subconcious-focused art in next week’s subscriber news letter. While the surrealists called this Automatic Drawing, I’m renaming it, and calling our drawing today “Body’s Choice". I’m stealing this phrase from my dear friend, the writer Courtney Martin. (If you don’t subscribe to her newsletter The Examined Family you’re missing out.) I heard Courtney use that terms when talking to her eldest daughter Maya. Maya was maybe 5 or 6 at the time, and Courtney was giving Maya a couple options. Instead of asking her, “What do you think?” she offered, “Body’s Choice!” and Maya knew immediately which direction she wanted to pursue. It completely blew me away. So many of us are trained to default to our rational brain for decision making. In turn, we lose touch with those first, most essential feelings - the ones that occur in our bodies. By practicing listening to the body, trusting it, and leading with it, we develop a deeper understanding of who we are and what is right for us. And while we practice noticing that what is right for OUR bodies, we also notice that it’s often different than what’s right for OTHER people’s bodies. And we can develop a strong respect for that, too. By having awareness and boundaries around our own bodies, not only do we respect ourselves but we respect other people, too. My body, my choice. Your body, your choice.Hope you enjoy today’s DT Podcast. I’d love to see what you draw. Share it out on Instagram and tag @drawtogether.studio so we can share it there, too - or email us a photo here and we’ll share it in next week’s email. Speaking of, check out 8 year old Cole’s awesome Doodle Game Drawing. SO MUCH FUN. Everything is better when we draw together, xoxo,w Get full access to DrawTogether with WendyMac at club.drawtogether.studio/subscribe

Today is the 128th birthday of the artist Joan Miro. I was first introduced to his work in the college library. I did take Art History classes, so it could have actually been course-related, instead of my usual library extra curricular “studying.” I was drawn to his vibrant colors and primitive and almost abstract characters. His work has influenced generations of artist and empowered them to depict the world a bit differently. The world is a better off place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left. Mathias Rastorfer, CEO and Co-owner of Galerie Gmurzynksa, talks about the survey of Joan Miro's work the gallery has mounted for its 50th Anniversary. The exhibition comprises early, radically abstract-surrealist museum-works such as the 1925 “Circus Horse” or the beautifully-hued 1927 “Peinture;” rarely seen mixed-media “Collage-Drawings” of the 1930s; a suite of large drawings picturing fantastic biomorphic interpretations on the female figure and on the theme of lovers; and a distinct group of Miró’s commanding anthropomorphic bronze sculptures from the 1960s to 1970s.
