This episode is dedicated to the Bauhaus master Gunta Stölzl, one of the few better-known Bauhaus women.  We have already mentioned her name in the previous podcast about Stölzl's first husband, the Israeli architect Arieh Sharon. They had a daughter, Yael, what was born in 1929, do you remember? And Ariel Aloni, my interview partner for that episode is also Gunta Stölzl's grandson.  My interview partners for today's episode are Gunta Stölzl's younger daughter, Monika Stadler (who shares with us her personal view on her mother's work) and the Dutch art historian Mirjam Deckers who is currently working for the Gunta Stölzl Estate and is writing her thesis about Stölzl's work. As we already have two people talking in this podcast you will not hear much of me. My own research into Gunta Stölzl's life and work is rather restricted, and I will therefore leave the talking to the expert and the daughter as they talk about Gunta Stölzl's life and work in Munich (before the Bauhaus), as a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar, as a master of the weaving workshop at the Bauhaus in Dessau and with her own businesses in Switzerland (after the Bauhaus). Dans cet épisode, je reçois Marion Lamarque, designeuse, consultante en stratégie couleur, conférencière et artiste basée à Lille. Mêlant design, art et industrie, Marion a plusieurs cordes à son arc chromatique puisqu'elle allie à la fois sensibilité et technique dans sa pratique. C'est durant ses études en design qu'elle fait la rencontre du monde de la couleur. Au fur et à mesure de ses expériences professionnelles, elle développe une vision à 360 degrés et une approche linéaire de la couleur : révéler, sensibiliser, et transmettre. We discuss the different experiences Ilona had at Yale and SVA and her latest project on Seasonal Color in Fashion. This work continues her long term exploration of “the expert” in art, fashion, “beauty,” and photography wherein Ilona takes on the role of the expert, casting “look alike” models along side her to create images reflecting the expert who forms and molds pupils to their image. Susan makes sculptural textile work combining mixed-media practices with fabric and embroidery across digital and manual platforms. She exploits the physics of light as it interacts with the structure of the triangular embroidery thread. The light scatters in multiple directions off the sides of the thread, creating different tones and saturations of the base color. She also exploits the science of optics, relying on our brain's ability to optically mix spots of color in close physical proximity. Further relying on the principles of color as taught by Joseph Albers and Johannes Itten et al, she exploits the vibratory effects of complementary colors and close saturation split complements. All of this creates a changeable optical environment activated by the viewer's movement from side to side as they view the artwork. The viewer experience is one of puzzling beauty, playfulness and sometimes awe.

Stephen C. Datz paints the American Western landscape in his own clear voice. Strong, angular design, rich harmonious colors, and a striking interpretation of the landscape are hallmarks of Stephen’s style. It took hard work and determination on his part to get here. In this episode, Stephen talks about how his unique voice developed. He was frustrated by how unprepared he was to make a living in fine art after earning a BFA from Colorado State University. He flailed for a few difficult years as he tried to figure out how to thrive as a fine art painter. Stephen’s father encouraged him to take a workshop from artist Skip Whitcomb. It was just what he needed. That workshop opened his eyes to the value of painting outdoors and gave him access to real-world, practical business advice. But there was a problem. In seeking gallery representation, one gallery owner made a frank observation about Stephen’s work: his work was derivative, looking much like the paintings of his workshop instructors. Rather than be dismayed by the criticism, Stephen viewed it as an encouragement to allow his artistic voice to emerge with confidence. He made the determination to be true to himself and his vision. The result? A stunning body of work that is truly unique. And, galleries – including Mark Sublette’s Medicine Man Gallery – took note. Stephen’s love of the landscape remains strong. In dieser Folge soll es uns um den vorletzten Kontrast meiner Serie gehen aber den letzten Kontrast nach Johannes Itten. Wir schauen uns also heute den Simultankontrast einmal näher an.

In dieser Folge meiner Kontraste-Serie beschäftigen wir uns mit dem kontrastreichsten aller Kontraste. Nämlich dem Komplementärkontrast. Du willst erfahren was das für ein Kontrast ist und mich die nächsten 5 Minuten das Wort „Kontrast“ noch 16 mal sagen hören? Dann bleib dran!

In dieser Folge deines Gestaltungs-Podcast geht es um den Quantitätskontrast. Im Grunde steht das Wort Quantität ja für die Menge. Viel hilft viel, also viele Pommes sind besser als keine Pommes.

Ein neuer Mittwoch und ihr wisst was das heißt. Richtig es ist Kontraste-Tag. Heute machen wir Kontrast Nummer 4 meiner Themenserie hier auf deinem Gestaltungs-Podcast den Qualitätskontrast. Alles über dessen Wirkung und Einsatzmöglichkeiten für dein Projekt gibt’s jetzt in dieser Folge.

Es wird langsam Herbst. Die Bäume werden so herrlich bunt. Das Gold, Rot und Braun der Blätter leuchtet im warmen Licht der Herbsonne. Und so manche Nacht ist schon so herrlich kalt das man denken könnte es duftet nach Schnee. Dieser Gegensatz aus warm und kalt soll auch heute unser Thema sein. Denn der dritte Kontrast unserer Serie hier ist der Warm-Kalt Kontrast. Und den schauen wir uns jetzt mal näher an.

Nach all den Farben in den letzten Folgen beginnt heute eine neue Themen-Serie hier auf deinem Gestaltungs-Podcast. Es gibt in der Welt der Gestaltung oder der Kunst zwei grundlegende Ansätze wie Farben miteinander auskommen. Entweder in Harmonie oder in Kontrasten. Und mit letzterem wollen wir uns ab heute näher beschäftigen.

Wir nähern uns in großen Schritten dem Ende meiner Farblehre-Serie und ich stelle dir in dieser Folge die letzte Sekundärfarbe nach Johannes Itten vor. Und wie du sicher schon im Titel gelesen hast geht es heute um Grün. Was die Farbe der Natur alles kann und wie du sie noch besser einsetzen kannst schauen wir uns jetzt mal genauer an.

Heute wird es hier besonders würdevoll. Denn in der nunmehr fünften Folge meiner Farblehre-Serie wollen wir uns mit Violett beschäftigen. Was kann diese Primärfarbe? Was verleiht ihr diese besonders würdevolle Wirkung? All das und noch mehr gibts jetzt in dieser Folge.

In der letzten Folge schlossen wir die Primärfarben in meiner Farblehre-Serie gemeinsam ab. Doch nach der Definition von Johannes Itten ist das ja nur die erste Gruppe von Farben. Heute möchte ich dir also den ersten Vertreter der zweiten Gruppe, den Sekundärfarben vorstellen. Und so kommen wir heute zu Orange. Was Orange ist worauf du achten solltest und wie du diese Farbe noch besser einsetzen kannst erfährst du in dieser Folge.

Da dies die dritte Folge zum Thema Primärfarbe ist weißt du sicher schon das es heute auch im die letzte Farbe geht. Denn Laut Johannes Itten gibt es drei. Gelb, Rot und richtig Blau. Was Blau alles kann, was wir damit Assoziieren und wann du Blau am besten Einsetzt erfährst du in dieser Folge.

Vor 100 Jahren wurde die weltberühmte Bauhaus-Schule gegründet. Geburtshelfer war ein Dorfjunge aus dem Berner Oberland – der dennoch vergessen ging. Das längst fällige Filmporträt über Johannes Itten (1888 bis 1967), Avantgardist, Ausbildner und Begründer einer wegweisenden Farbenlehre. Johannes Itten zählt zu den bedeutendsten Kunsttheoretikern und -pädagogen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der von ihm erfundene Vorkurs, der als Kreativitätslabor zur Förderung eines schöpferischen Menschen gilt, ist heute ein obligatorischer Teil der Ausbildung der wichtigen Kunstschulen weltweit. Seine Farbenlehre ist ein Klassiker, auf den gar Stilisten und Kosmetikberater zurückgreifen. Und doch ist Johannes Itten heute ein bekannter Unbekannter. Neuanfänge und Brüche prägten sein Leben: Auf der Suche nach seinem eigenen Weg, nach neuen Lebenskonzepten, nach Antworten auf die Fragen seiner Zeit, lebte er in Berlin, Wien, Stuttgart, Bern, Genf, Weimar und Zürich. Itten war Mitbegründer der abstrakten Malerei, später Anhänger einer heute umstrittenen Lebensreform-Bewegung und Kritiker der Industrialisierung. Noch später führte er eine eigene revolutionäre Kunstschule in Berlin, die von den Nationalsozialisten geschlossen wurde. Danach leitete Itten in Zürich viele Jahre die Kunstgewerbeschule und war unter anderem Gründungsdirektor des Museums Rietberg. 1966 vertrat er die Schweiz an der Biennale in Venedig. Der Dokumentarfilm von Marina Rumjanzewa mit Animationen von Philipp Seefeldt ist eine Entdeckungsreise in das Werk und Leben von Johannes Itten. Nicht zuletzt erzählt der Film ein heute kaum bekanntes Kapitel der Geschichte des Bauhauses: dessen Anfänge, die ganz anders waren als das Bauhaus, wie wir es heute kennen. Eine Eigenproduktion der «Sternstunde Kunst», produziert von Anita Hugi.

This is a Movement Research Studies Project: The Role of Class in Current Dance Practices Conceived in conversation with Movement Research Faculty January 20, 2015 at Gibney Dance Center 890 Broadway organized by Movement Research in collaboration with Beth Gill, Lance Gries, Eva Karczag and Gwen Welliver The Role of Class was a series of brief and intimate discussions with various teaching artists including Julian Barnett, Michelle Boulé, Wendell Cooper, Jeanine Durning, Barbara Forbes, Zvi Gotheiner, K.J. Holmes, John Jasperse, Joanna Kotze, Nia Love, Juliette Mapp, Cori Olinghouse, Janet Panetta, Shelley Senter, Vicky Shick, RoseAnne Spradlin, Karinne Keithley Syers and Jesse Zarrit. These discussions addressed questions and ideas about dance and movement-based class through their own practices and histories.
