A UN-led mass vaccination campaign in underway in northeast Syria's notorious Al Hol camp complex to protect the nearly 40,000 people being detained there from a cholera outbreak. For years, Al Hol has housed Syrians, Iraqis and other third country nationals linked to – or impacted by – the country's long civil war, which ended with the ousting of President Bashar al Assad in late November.Among those being held are hundreds of family members of alleged terrorist fighters from ISIL and other groups. With more on the campaign, which has been happening with the blessing of Damascus's caretaker authorities and local administrators in northeast Syria, Khourchid Hassan – a health and nutrition officer with the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) – has been speaking to UN News's Daniel Johnson.

It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Kyle Kulinski, co-host of the Kyle Kulinski Show & Krystal Kyle and Friends, to round up the week in news. First, Emma runs through updates on growing famine in Gaza as winter nears, Israel's land grab in Syria, Trump's threat to Iran, Trump's advisors, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Pelosi's undermining of AOC's Oversight committee bid, RFK's newest vaccine objection (polio), Trump's banking deregulation agenda, and Macron's newest centrist PM, before watching Peter Thiel sputter through a defense of the US healthcare system and the (former) UnitedHealthcare CEO. Kyle Kulinski then joins as he reflects on Nancy Mace's complex and intersectional relationship with the bathroom, Democrats' willingness to capitulate to and embrace Trump's fascist scapegoating of trans people and immigrants, and the importance of actually acknowledging your constituents' issues in winning elections. Kyle and Emma also tackle the absurd narrative about Trump and the GOP's right-wing populism, parsing particularly through the facade of Trump's anti-war persona before touching on the pseudo-populism of RFK's relationship with Big Pharma. Wrapping up, they unpack the state of “independent” media, the growing embrace of far-right lunacy as long as it comes with a billionaire's backing, and the need for the Democratic party to look left for success. And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the tension around the humanitarian crisis in the US-backed Al-Hol detention center in Syria with Owen from LA, The Letterhack previews his show with Ronald Raygun tonight, and Juliet from Portland gives Emma a lesson in AGP. The MR Crew also covers the arrest of a Lakeland, Florida woman over saying “Delay, Deny, Depose. You people are next” after being denied healthcare and Sen. Blumenthall's Musk suckup, also talking with Jackson in Colorado about media comprehension in the US. They also watch Daniel Penny aptly thank the fact that “someone” didn't get hurt in his killing of Jordan Neely, and touch on the TYT's floundering attempts to pivot right, plus, your calls and IMs! After the Islamic State was largely defeated on the battlefields of northern Syria in 2019, thousands of fighters and their families were placed in detention facilities in the region. By far the largest of these detention camps is Al Hol, which at its peak held over 70,000 people from several dozen countries. Today, over 50,000 people live in Al Hol, which is essentially an open-air prison. The vast majority of people living there are children. My guest today, Sarhang Hamaseed, is the director of Middle East Programs at the United States Institute of Peace and is intimately involved with efforts to help repatriate families currently stranded in this prison camp. When we caught up, he had recently returned from Iraq, working on programs to support the reintegration of Iraqi families in Al Hol. In our conversation, Sarhang Hamaseed explains why this festering prison camp in northern Syria is both a humanitarian and security crisis that deserves broader international attention.

Tens of thousands of children currently live in dire conditions in Al Hol camp in Syria – and there are concerns this makes them vulnerable to radicalisation and recruitment. But what is the evidence behind this? Caterina Ceccarelli examines what we know about the link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and violent extremism, and explores the pathways by which experiencing tough and potentially traumatic events in childhood might turn someone to extremism later in life. This research is being undertaken as part of a project called XCEPT, which is funded by UK International Development from the UK government; however, the views expressed do not necessarily reflect the UK government's official policies. XCEPT aims to understand the drivers of violent and peaceful behaviour in conflict-affected populations – and to find solutions that support peace. Find out more about XCEPT at xcept-research.org.

Toimittajana on Antti Pilke.

Im November 2022 veröffentlichte Ärzte ohne Grenzen den Bericht „Between two fires: danger and desperation in Syria's al-Hol camp”. A new report by MSF lays bare the cruelty of the long-term detainment of more than 50,000 people, the majority of whom are children, in Al-Hol, northeast Syria. The camp was once designed to provide safe, temporary accommodation and humanitarian services to civilians displaced by the conflict in Syria and Iraq. But the nature and purpose of the camp has long deviated and grown increasingly into an unsafe and unsanitary open-air prison after people were moved there from Islamic State group controlled territories in December 2018. Neppe. Det skal sterkere lut til. **Secretary-General's TravelThe Secretary-General is in Lviv, where he has met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two were later joined by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for a trilateral meeting. In his remarks to the press just now, the Secretary-General reiterated that the United Nations will go on working in full solidarity with the Ukrainian people to mobilize all of our capacities and resources — alongside our national partners — to continue to provide humanitarian support to people in need, wherever it is required. He also underscored that the positive momentum on the food front reflects a victory for diplomacy and for multilateralism. Getting food and fertilizer out of Ukraine and Russia in larger quantities is crucial to further calm commodity markets and lower prices, Mr. [António] Guterres said. “It is essential to provide relief to the most vulnerable people and countries,” he added. The Secretary-General said he had discussed the investigation of the tragic incident in a detention facility in Olenivka on 29 July. In relation to that, he announced that he intends to appoint General Carlos dos Santos Cruz of Brazil to lead a fact-finding mission. In order for the mission to work, he told the press, it needs to have the necessary assurances to guarantee secure access to the site and any other relevant locations. To put it simply, the Secretary-General said, a fact-finding mission must be free to find the facts. And we just put out the transcript of his press remarks. The Secretary-General arrived in Lviv yesterday evening, and, earlier today, he briefly visited the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. In speaking to reporters afterwards, the Secretary-General noted the links between the United Nations and the university, adding that today, the contributions of civil society and of academia are increasingly essential in the development of modern democracies.**UkraineStaying in Ukraine: We, along with our humanitarian partners, yesterday delivered 60 tons of critical supplies in Zaporizka oblast to help meet the most immediate needs of nearly 6,000 people who remain in the Orikhiv settlement, only 6 kilometres from the front line. The nine-truck humanitarian convoy brought food, water, hygiene kits, health supplies, shelter kits and relief items to help people stay warm in the cold season ahead. Our humanitarian colleagues note that this is the first convoy to reach this severely affected area since the war began. Across Ukraine, aid workers have provided life-saving assistance to nearly 12 million people affected by the war since February. However, assistance remains limited in areas beyond the control of the Ukrainian Government.**AfghanistanThe United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) today said that it deplores yesterday's attack on a Kabul Mosque, the latest in a disturbing series of bombings which have killed and injured more than 250 people in recent weeks, the highest monthly number of civilian casualties over the last year. The United Nations Mission noted that scores of civilians were killed and injured in Wednesday's attack. UNAMA extended its deepest sympathies to the families of the killed and a speedy recovery to the injured. With security deteriorating, the UN calls on the de facto Taliban authorities to take concrete steps to prevent all forms of terrorism in Afghanistan. The United Nations Mission stressed that vulnerable communities should be provided additional support and perpetrators brought to justice.**ArmeniaThe Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries caused by the explosion in a warehouse in the Armenian capital Yerevan on Sunday, 14 August. He extends his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Armenia. He wishes the injured a speedy recovery. The United Nations stands by the people of Armenia during this period of mourning.**SyriaTurning to Syria, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator there, Imran Riza, yesterday concluded a four-day mission to the north-eastern Al Hasakeh and Ar-Raqqa Governorates. Mr. Riza warned in a statement today that north-east Syria is facing a severe water crisis - from drinking water to water for irrigation, food production, and power generation – impacting people's health and livelihoods. He said that the UN, working with all parties concerned, is committed to address this crisis. Mr. Riza also visited several camps for internally displaced persons and called for sustained access to services to help affected families in and out of camps break the cycles of poverty and crisis so they can live their lives in dignity. He expressed concern about the increasing levels of violence in Al Hol camp. This year alone, at least 26 people, including three this week, have been murdered in the camp. Twenty of those murdered were women.**HaitiIn Haiti, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) says that one year after the devastating earthquake that struck the south-western part of the country, more than 250,000 children do not have access to adequate schools. Reconstruction has been delayed by insecurity and lack of funds and may take years to complete. Despite a challenging environment and limited funding, UNICEF has rebuilt or rehabilitated 234 classrooms. The agency has also provided school kits to 74,000 students. Additionally, almost 100 high performance tents were installed in damaged schools. UNICEF has also repaired 22 drinking water systems reaching 440,000 people. It also provided 23,000 hygiene kits to 121,000 people. At the end of last year, UNICEF requested $97 million through the 2022 Humanitarian Appeal for Children to reach 950,000 people, including 520,000 children in Haiti. To date, UNICEF has only received 30 per cent of the funding needed. The agency is asking for $64.6 million in urgent funding to continue helping the most vulnerable.**ComorosIn Comoros, our team, led by Resident Coordinator François Batalingaya, says there has been progress on COVID-19 vaccinations. Now, over 70 per cent of adolescents aged 12 to 17 have been fully vaccinated, following a month-long national campaign, led by health authorities with the support of the UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, our joint efforts helped the authorities vaccinate nearly half of the entire population. As a result, Comoros is now among the top ten African countries with a high percentage of fully vaccinated people. This success is also attributed to a gender-based community engagement co-led by WHO and UNICEF to involve training nearly 200 women and 140 young journalists in vaccination promotion for youth and early screening.**MadagascarAnd the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) today warned that three consecutive years of severe drought in the Grand Sud of Madagascar have led to the country's worst food crisis in the last 20 years, exacerbating the vulnerabilities of already poor populations. Despite humanitarian interventions, FAO said that the outcome of the main agricultural season in 2021 was low due to reduced cultivated areas linked to limited access to agricultural inputs and the delayed onset of rains. FAO notes that the situation was worsened by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.**Financial ContributionAnd last, I am happy to report a fresh contribution to the regular budget. Today it comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and we thank our friends in Kinshasa. DRC's payment takes us to 117 fully paid-up Member States. And with that, I'm open to your questions.

Men hvad gør regeringen? More than 10 years of brutal conflict in Syria has left most of the population in need of assistance and without access to basic services in places all over the country. In part one of our special series on Syria, Intercross heard the stories of two Syrians living in Aleppo, Mouna Shawakh and Rami Asfar, in their own words. In part two, we zoom into Northeast Syria, in a camp called Al Hol. Today Al Hol houses around 58,000 people -- two thirds of whom are children, and most under the age of 5. Tens of thousands of children are spending their childhoods in appalling harsh conditions no child should experience. For the young people now growing up in camps like Al Hol, living conditions are far below international standards in terms of access to food, water, health care and education. We talk about the seemingly insurmountable challenges of those who remain stranded living in the camp, and what the Red Cross Red Crescent movement is doing about them, such as operating a field hospital to provide emergency life-saving surgical care and medical consultations. In November 2020, the first mental health and psychosocial services tent was set up inside the field hospital to provide psycho-social support, including educational activities for the children. What could be done to try and solve what the ICRC calls one of the most complex child protection crises of our time? Featuring ICRC's Near and Middle East Regional Director Fabrizio Carboni and ICRC psychotherapist Alessandra Lennar. Hosted by ICRC spokesperson Sara Al-Zawqari.

In two special episodes, Intercross shares stories of those affected by a decade of brutal and unrelenting conflict, and the efforts made by the ICRC and our partners to assist them. In Aleppo, we hear from young Syrians Mouna Shawakh and Rami Asfar, telling us in their own words about how their lives have changed due to conflict. But unknown to Leila, a group of Yazidi volunteers – some who had escaped IS – had returned to the camp as infiltrators, determined to rescue her and other enslaved women.
