The technology hub is offering the free event as part of its EDIH for AI Programme, an initiative to provide data science expertise and resources to support start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, and public sector organisations, as they seek to digitalise their operations in pursuit of greater productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability. This year's theme is AI for Sport Minister Dara Calleary announced the launch of the fifth John McCarthy AI Summer School, themed 'AI for Sport' in the RDI hub on Friday 28th of June. Sport is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by technological advancements with data at its core. For professional athletes, data analytics offer critical insights that can significantly enhance performance metrics. For spectators, data enriches the understanding of live action, whether in the stadium, on the field, or on the screen. John McCarthy AI Summer School in Kerry The premise is both straightforward and compelling: enhanced knowledge leads to improved performance and enjoyment. The sophisticated tools and data analytics that enable the attainment of personal bests are now widely accessible, benefiting not only elite sportspeople but also the general public. We are delighted to announce that the following partners - RDI hub, Microsoft Ireland, Munster Technological University, the SFI ADAPT Centre for AI Driven Digital Content Technology, AI Ireland, along with new partners Red Chair Recruitment, Skillnet Innovation Exchange, Connected Hubs and Western Development Commission, will joint host a hybrid Artificial Intelligence Summer School event on the 12th and 13th of September 2023. The applied elements have a broader appeal and are accessible to anyone with an interest in Artificial intelligence and the various way it can be deployed. AI has had a truly transformative effect on our lives in recent years, particularly with the advent of Generative AI. Founded in 1981, Fexco is Ireland's most successful multinational financial and business solutions provider, operating in 29 countries and processing over €3bn in transactions annually. Yet, at heart, it is a family-owned business, proudly headquartered in Killorglin, Co Kerry, that values on curiosity, wellness and community impact. After almost 20 years working in the traditional banking sector, Anna Savage joined Fexco as Group CFO and immediately noticed the differences in the structures and culture that a family-owned business can bring. Continuing our focus on spring salmon fishing, this week's Ireland on the Fly podcast turns its attention to the Upper Caragh Fishery in county Kerry and we speak to Mike O'Shea the fishery manager to find out about the salmon run on the system from springers right through to the summer grilse and back-end of the season. Mike also discusses the introduction of the hatchery, how that has been a success with 30% of the salmon caught coming from it and why he believes an enlightened, supplemental approach is key to its development. Based in the spectacular Reeks district between Killorglin and Glenbeigh, even if you don't catch a fish, just going there alone is worth it for the scenery….well maybe the first time, but after that you do want to be landing a salmon or two and if you're hoping for a springer, the Upper Caragh could be the place for that. Episode 20! It's pretty amazing that we've made it this far, given how hectic life has been over the last few months. But as autumn (just regular, lowercase-a autumn) sets in, and we have time to center ourselves a bit, we're trying to get things in order to keep bringing you Changeling content into the coming seasons. To that end, this week we're talking about Court of All Kings, the third supplement in the Immortal Eyes trilogy of setting/chronicle books, which focuses on Ireland and the fae one finds there. (A note from Pooka: I feel a bit of a fool, because I didn't realize that the lengthier show notes were getting cut off on certain podcasting platforms. Hopefully folks who were interested went on to the website in order to see the rest of what they were after, but in the interest of making everything visible to everyone, we'll try to keep things trim, or at least put the important stuff "above the fold" from now on... so for example, here's the link to our Discord: https://discord.gg/SAryjXGm5j) videos in gaeilge In the episode, we referenced an example of a monolingual Irish speaker interviewed for a documentary a number of years ago... and behold, the video. It's from In Search of the Trojan War, from 1985; the connection they make is that Irish storytelling in the oral tradition has a number of features that link it with other forms of Indo-European epic. The storyteller, Seán Ó hEinrí, passed away in 1998 and is thought to have been (possibly) the last monolingual speaker of the language. (There are plenty of other videos on YouTube if you're interested in the language and its contemporary usage. Several series of the soap Ros na Rún are on there in their entirety, and the documentary No Béarla is a pretty stark demonstration of how few people in Ireland speak Irish.) ... salmon of knowledge The sculpture known as The Big Fish in Belfast is reminiscent of the mythological salmon of knowledge: a fish who ate the hazelnuts of wisdom that fell into its pool, and was then eaten in turn (most myths say by Fionn MacCumhaill/Finn MacCool, first leader of the Fianna). Its tiles are printed with old photographs, children's drawings, snippets of maps and newspapers, and other fragments of Belfast culture: They say that kissing the fish grants one a bit of wisdom, much as kissing the Blarney Stone gives you the gift of the gab. (We can neither confirm nor deny these rumors, but please do rinse your lips carefully if you try.) In Changeling terms, this does seem like it would be some kind of powerful chimerical entity... a poll shall be posted in the Discord (link below) to decide! ... ciarán's playlist In a recent play-by-post game, Pooka had a character who was a Daireann sidhe named Ciarán that kept a "cauldronhouse" (freehold) in trust for the House, disguised as a pub in Dublin. As a character-building exercise, they created a sample playlist of songs to help set the mood. While this barely scratches the surface of the enormous variety of Irish- or Celtic-inflected music out there, it's presented here for your enjoyment, perhaps to listen to while you skim Court of All Kings—just hopefully not while you're also listening to the episode. No idea if a Spotify embed will even work on some platforms, but let's find out...! (Feel free to put this on shuffle as well, the order is pretty flexible.) ... your hosts Josh Hillerup (any pronoun) found an eighteen-leaf clover the other day, and it turns out, there is such a thing as too much luck. Pooka G (any pronoun/they) once climbed a statue of the púca goat in Killorglin, and the very earth shook with unbridled delight. ... Is fearr Gaeilge bhriste, ná Béarla cliste. (Broken Irish is better than clever English.) —Irish proverb (psst! email us at podcast@changelingthepodcast.com if you want) (support us on Patreon for additional treats at https://www.patreon.com/changelingthepodcast!)

The RDI hub building is dedicated to John McCarthy as a tribute to the Stanford University computer scientist. McCarthy was one of the founders of the discipline of artificial intelligence and his father was born in Cromane, near Killorglin in Co Kerry. In the late 1950s McCarthy invented LISP which became the programming language of choice for AI applications. AI is going to have a truly transformative effect on our lives in the coming years, Already it is a discipline which has risen to prominence in terms of the personalisation of content we interact with on a daily basis online but there is so much more AI can help us achieve in the tourism space and we are looking forward to discussing its diversity with our speaker panel. Our aim is that the John McCarthy AI Summer School will become a calendar moment for the development of AI and the sharing of knowledge. RDI Hub CEO, Liam Cronin had this to say about the event: “The application of Artificial Intelligence will be a key driver of future Tourism growth in Ireland. Tourism is a huge economic sector for Kerry and we look forward to the further development and coordination of Digitalisation in the tourism sector in conjunction with possible associated new business/employment opportunities. The John McCarthy AI Summer School is a gathering of the brightest minds in AI, with this year's event taking a deep dive into the area of AI for Tourism with both core research and real-life applications as to how it is reshaping our future.” Professor Vinny Wade, Director of the SFI ADAPT Centre and Chair of Artificial Intelligence at Trinity College Dublin's School of Computer Science and Statistics, said: “Artificial Intelligence is making a significant impact on the tourism sector and the underlying technologies form part of ADAPT's key research focus. AI is helping to reinvent the tourism sector, from fintech and human behaviour analytics to augmented and mixed reality enabled scenic destinations, our researchers are looking to harness the opportunities offered by technological advances to help meet the needs of tourists and citizens. The AI Summer School is a great platform for broad engagement and we are delighted to be a founding member of this initiative.” Dr Haithem Afli, lecturer in AI at Munster Technological University, had this to say “The purpose of the John McCarthy artificial intelligence (AI) Award is to promote research in AI research done by students and foster scientific exchange between students and scienti...
The high temperatures this week has led to increased concern for the well-being of King Puck, the mountain goat, who forms the centrepiece of the ancient Puck Fair gathering in Killorglin. A new goat is crowned King Puck every year and is placed on a 50 feet high platform. Organisers say the animal is always treated with great care, is given plenty of food and water, and subjected to regular checks by a vet. Critics say it’s cruel and that an effigy of the animal could be placed on the platform. They say the heat has exacerbated their concerns. Jerry speaks to Harry McDaid of the Kerry SPCA, the animal welfare organisation and to Deputy Danny Healy-Rae. Yesterday, King Puck was taken down from the platform. After the show, the organisers of Puck Fair confirmed that the goat was put back on the platform last evening but that today he is back in the shade with plenty of cold water and food, and that his hourly veterinary checks continue.
The King Puck goat has been taken down from its pedestal at the Puck Fair in Killorglin due to animal welfare concerns. In a statement, the festival said the wild goat was taken down due to the current “unprecedented spells of hot, sunny weather”. It said animal welfare is its highest priority and the goat is now being kept in the shade with cold water and food. Gerry Boland is a Vegan Activist & Animal Rights Campaigner & spoke to Ali today.
The hot weather has prompted a last-minute plea to stop Puck Fair in Killorglin, Kerry displaying a live goat in a cage. Traditionally a wild goat spends 3 days & 3 nights on top of a 50-foot stand. The goat may be given a fan to keep him cool as temperatures rise. Animal Rights activist John Carmody joined Ali to discuss.

Alex Moiseve worked in Kerry a few years ago before returning to his native Ukraine with his wife and two sons. When the Russians invaded, the Moiseves fled their homeland and made their way back to Killorglin, with help from their friends.
A few weeks back I was talking about the Puck Fair in Killorglin, Co Kerry, in the southwest of Ireland. For those of you not familiar with the fair, essentially is a Lughnasadh adjacent festival where a wild billy goat is caught on the mountainside the goat is brought back to the town, and the Queen of Puck, traditionally a schoolgirl from one of the local primary schools crowns him King Puck. They are then paraded around the town looking down on their subjects from a kind of mobile tower that looks a lot like a medieval siege tower without the protective cladding to the delight of a rapturous crowd. It reads a bit like the start of a folk horror screenplay, doesn't it? And to be fair, it should because there is some pretty heavy pagan fertility symbolism laced through this event. There are some adult themes in the show as we also get into overlordship or Kingship depended upon male claimant making love to the territorial goddess and some of the wilder accounts of Kingship rites as laid out by Giraldus of Wales, that involve the consumption of the marriage to the land in its most literal sense. . Kerry TD Michael Healy Rae will not force customers to wear masks or facing coverings in his shop as they become mandatory today. Mr Healy Rae said he will encourage people to wear them but said he will not become an “enforcer” and neither will his staff. Speaking on Independent.ie's Floating Voter podcast, he said: “We are not going to be saying to a person 'you've no mask on, you can't be in the shop.'” “It won't happen in my shop and the vast majority of shops in Ireland. People working in the shops have enough to be doing just to do their own roles,” he added. Mr Healy Rae runs a Mace supermarket and filling station in his hometown of Killorglin. In a wide-ranging interview Mr Healy Rae also said: - He would accept a local lockdown in Kerry because the “rules are the rule”. - But public health experts don't have a “monopoly on being right” when it comes to pubs. - The new government has been an “unmitigated disaster”. - The sacking of Barry Cowen as Agriculture Minister was “wrong”. - Education Minister Norma Foley is a “formidable operator”. - And landlords are being “demonised” by certain TDs. Mr Healy Rae siad it is “remarkable” that pubs are still closed when around 100,000 people flew into Ireland from abroad last week. “That in itself was an anomaly and is something of great consternation to a lot of people,” he said. The long serving deputy said the Government should introduce testing and quarantine for all travellers arriving here as they have in New Zealand where there has been no new coronavirus case in over 100 days. Mr Healy-Rae said it is “counterproductive” to public health to keep pubs closed because people are not congregating in a smaller number of licenced premises. He also said the ban had led to emergence of sheebens in rural communities along with house parties and increased off-licence sales. He said his brother Danny's pub has remained closed throughout the pandemic as he does not serve food. Mr Healy-Rae says “common sense” outweighs advice from the National Public Health Emergency Team's (Npeht) guidance on the reopening of pubs. “No one has a monopoly on being right about everything at all times and I think they're wrong on this occasion,” he added. He said the new coalition government has been an “unmitigated disaster” that has “lunged from crisis to crisis”. He said Taoiseach Micheal Martin is a very experienced TD and expected him to be “more sure footed” when he took office. “The way I would describe the Government is that they are waking up everyone morning and what they are doing is they are literally wetting their finger and they are seeing which way the wind is blowing,” he added. He said the sacking of Barry Cowen over his drink driving case was handled “badly and poorly” by the Taoiseach. “I don't think it warranted him being forced out of the position that he had. I know an awful lot of people around the country certainly didn't agree with it,” he added. Mr Healy Rae said he was glad Kerry had a minister at the Cabinet table in Norma Foley and criticised those who describe he has an inexperienced TD. He also warned TDs against criticising landlords because they will leave the market and there will be less tenancies for renters. He said there is no money in the rental business if you are starting now.
Hello, Lovelies! This week Tiffany gets WAY took excited about a random festival and Ashley is WAY not impressed about it. Ever heard of the Puck Festival held yearly in Ireland? Apparently, instead of discussing the history of St. Patrick's day, Tiffany decided to talk about the Puck Festival! This festival, occurring yearly at Killorglin, County Kerry, Ireland, quickly makes Ashley question why he friends are the way they are. Basically... a goat is captured and placed on a pedestal until the end of the festival. Confused? Same.
