The world's only Qatari LGBT activist has told SBS News he fears protests during the FIFA World Cup will lead to retaliation against the local gay community by authorities. Same sex activity is illegal in Qatar… punishable by years in prison. FIFA and the local organising committee insist “everyone is welcome” for the tournament… but human rights groups point out that's not the case for the country's own LGBT community.

Marching towards equality. On this week's podcast, Michael speaks to Brendan Fay, a decades-long L G B T activist, filmmaker, public speaker and founder of the hugely popular St Pats For All Parade which takes place every year in Sunnyside and Woodside in Queens. Brendan was born in Co Kildare and grew up in Drogheda. He moved to New York in the 1980s – mainly because he felt it was easier for him to come out as a gay man. However, Brendan soon found out that America too had its own problems with discrimination, which motivated him to join the movement for L G B T rights, same-sex civil marriage, AIDS awareness and human rights. In the late 1990s, Brendan, a proud Irish man, was arrested several times for attempting to march with a gay rights group at the Fifth Avenue St. Patrick's Day parade. In response, he then decided to form his own St. Patrick's Day parade in Queens that would be welcome to people all backgrounds and sexual orientation – hence the name St Pats For All. The parade has become a massive event in Queens and appears to be getting bigger every year. In this year's parade, which was held last Sunday, nearly two dozen politicians and city officials marched including Senator Chuck Schumer, and other city and state lawmakers. In 2016, Brendan's L G B T group -- the Lavender and Green Alliance became the first L G B T group to march in the St Patrick's Day Parade in Fifth Avenue parade.I spoke to Brendan after the St Pats for All Parade Sunday and he looks back on his life, his struggles coming out and how he established the parade. It's a truly inspirational interview. It was the first time Brendan wasn't involved in organizing the event having stepped down as co-chair. Brendan's website is brendanfay.net where you can find out more about Brendan's journey, his work and his documentary films. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @thelonghallpodcast – and 5 star reviews are always welcome!!All of our previous podcasts on www.TheLongHalPodcast.com where we publish a host of Irish American news and sports stories – including a detailed report on last Sunday's St Pats For all Parade which is packed with photos and videos. Growing up in a suburban Jewish household where he was taught that helping others was imperative, Andy has dedicated his life to political and charitable causes. He and Mike Balaban have known each other for more than 40 years. In this interview they discuss their lives, and shared values while pursuing paths of political and social activism.

In this episode, Al interviews Logan Lynn, American musician, writer, producer, filmmaker, TV personality, mental health advocate, and LGBT Activist (recorded 9-9-19). Logan shares his incredible story of surviving childhood sexual abuse and the impact it had on his entire family. He describes being outed by a therapist after sharing with him that he was gay. Logan also shares how the music scene and his early popularity fueled his 16-year addiction of cocaine, alcohol, and crack. It wasn't until he suffered a TIA (a mini-stroke) and entered a program specifically for dual diagnoses (addiction & mental health) that he was able to finally become healthy. Logan received the prestigious 2017 Award of Excellence from the National Council for Behavioral Health for his advocacy work in music, TV, film and community, and for founding the Keep Oregon Well campaign to fight the stigma of mental illness. This week on Fronteras:
There is a voice, waiting to be heard all over the world. A voice that we contain the moment it grows louder. A voice that simply wants to rise, connect, and just be – like most of us. Imagine living in a place where we constantly have to watch what we do and how we go about our lives. Most of all, how would it feel to be subjected to a society with taboos and being judged? Well as much as we’d like to think we’ve moved on in the ‘established societies’, we are still burdened with archaic laws and stigmas that have penetrated far and deep. In this episode, we’re talking to Makinder who works with Trade Sexual Health, a UK health charity working with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGB&T) communities. We will talk about Makinder’s journey and conflicts and how it’s high time the LGBT voice rings loud and clear. We are excited to present this episode as The Pride Festival Kicks off in London on 24 June until 9 July 2017. http://www.tradesexualhealth.com
Today on Cannabis Confidential Dr. Dina is joined by Dennis Peron, a cannabis and LGBT activist. After serving in Vietnam, Dennis moved to San Francisco, eventually becoming known for his co-authoring of Proposition 215 – California’s Compassionate Use Act of 1996. In the 1970's, Peron ran the “Big Top marijuana supermarket” from home, and was essential to the passage of a 1978 initiative to allow the personal use of cannabis in San Francisco.Though the initiative was never adopted by law enforcement, Dennis organized Proposition P in 1991. Dennis also founded the city’s first medical cannabis club, the Church Compassion Center, in 1993. Two years later he opened the Cannabis Buyers Club in San Francisco, which is said to be where the medical cannabis movement was born. The Cannabis Buyers Club were fielding Proposition 215 to San Francisco patients before it passed in 1996.

Today's episode is powerful, especially with all the division that's going on in the world today. Our guest is Hudson Taylor, who was a 3-time All-American wrestler at the University of Maryland. But it's not his athletic accomplishments which make it so powerful, it's what he is doing now. He is an advocate for LGBT rights in and out of the athletic arena. When I asked him why he takes what he does to such a level, he has an amazing response, how it's not just about this generation, but the next. He mentions that people will look back decades from now and ask, "Why didn't they do anything?" He also has some great direct action steps for people who may be unsure about how to approach somebody using homophobic or derogatory slurs. Overall, an amazing episode, and you can find more about Hudson at athleteally.org.
Travis Myers is a writer, panelist, and LGBT activist whose work has appeared in several Hogtown institutions. Travis is also hilarious and enjoys wine, which makes him a perfect guest for this show. We spoke with Travis about growing up religious and gay, fetishizing the act of argument, and the Village's past and uncertain future. Travis also talked about why we don't see more penises in movies, John V. Olivia, and learning to love Toronto—begrudgingly.
