The New Yorker described cellist and composer Peter Gregson as “working at the forefront of the new music scene”. As a cellist, he has performed all over the world, from The Royal Albert Hall to Capitol Studios in Hollywood. He has composed music for award-winning TV shows and movies, including the much loved Bridgerton from Netflix, and The New Pope from HBO. He also crosses into the pop industry, having featured as both cello soloist and conductor for Ed Sheeran on his record-breaking 2017 album, Divide. In this interview, Peter Gregson discusses his latest work, Everything We Hear Comes First from Silence, written for the Omega Ensemble. We hear about his inspiration from composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass, and his approach to blending acoustic instruments with electronics. He shares insights into his reimagining of the Bach Cello Suites, and how a chance encounter with Alan Rickman led him to compose for film and television. The Omega Ensemble performs the world premiere of Peter's new work, Everything We Here Comes First From Silence, as part of their upcoming tour La Musica Notturna from March 24-27.

Antoine Arvizu is the studio owner and manager, recording and producing most of the artists that come to us for that “Compound Sound”. Some artists and producers of note include:  Chicano Batman, Ryan Bingham (Grammy and Oscar winner for Crazy Heart), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones), Ikey Owens (Free Moral Agents, Jack White, The Mars Volta), Jay Buchanan (Rival Sons)… Arvizu began his music career as a drummer in the late 70s/early 80s as punk rock morphed into an alternative art rock. A founding member of Dr. Dream Records recording artists National Peoples Gang, he toured internationally before disbanding in the mid-90s; sharing the stage with such iconic bands as The Flaming Lips, Nirvana, Soundgarden, fIREHOSE and many more during those early days of "indie rock". A recording career began in 1991 at the now defunct The Toledo studio in Long Beach engineering for Sublime, Rocket From The Crypt, Big Drill Car and many more. Later in the nineties he was a founding member of the Delta Blues group Bourbon Jones, earning the moniker Two Drum Tony, famous for simply playing the 26″ Radio King bass drum and cowhide snare, digging deep into the second line style of New Orleans blues and swing. It was in 1998 that Antoine had the opportunity to engineer at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. The list of fine artists that come through those studios is staggering, to name a few: Paul McCartney, The JB's, Richard Carpenter, Elliot Smith, Faith Hill… and the list of world class engineers and producers is outrageous; education through osmosis. In 2003, happy to finally have a studio to truly call home, Antoine joined The Compound Studio to help create “An Organic Recording Experience". On this week's Fabulous Film & Friends our roundtable will be completing the second part of a matched set we started with last episode's discussion of Joel and Ethan Coen's Hudsucker Proxy, as we review their other lavish, 1950's-set extravaganza, 2016's Hail Caesar!.  Returning for this thrilling follow up is a name over 200 podcast listeners trust, my younger sister Roseanne Caputi.  Then there's the most doggedly truth-seeking pediatric dentist ever to set up shop in Salt Lake City, David Johnson, DMD.  And back again in the official Paul Lynde Center Square is Actor, Voice Artist, photobug and funnyman, GORDON ALEX ROBERTSON! Hail Caesar! follows a day in the life of Hollywood Studio fixer Eddie Mannix as he shepherds a menagerie of actors, directors, and publicity hounds, keeping them out of trouble, motivated and happy during several productions in the studio's line up. Meanwhile on the set of Mannix's most expensive endeavor, a Tale of the Christ also entitled Hail Caesar, lead actor Baird Whitlock has been kidnapped by a group of Communists. And on a personal level, the scrupulous Mannix struggles with lying to his wife about his cigarette habit and must decide whether he will leave the chaos of Capitol Studios for the greener pastures of a cushy, serious-minded job at Lockheed Martin.  As with Hudsucker Proxy, I first saw the film in less-than-ideal circumstances: on a plane bound for India in the summer of 2016, after missing the film in theaters once again-- something I rarely do with Coen Brothers movies. It should be noted that I missed two of their most visually spectacular films on the big screen and seeing Hail Caesar! amidst the din and flight attendants' interruptions of a plane voyage, I lost a lot of lines and nuance of the film, and yet I still loved it. Upon first seeing it, I declared on social media that you couldn't find a more Catholic message of self-sacrifice and mortification in a mainstream Hollywood film  than if the film was bankrolled by the Vatican itself.   Another  voice in the roundtable couldn't  help but notice a strong Kierkegaardian/existentialist worldview to this largely ignored and/or dismissed film and we all delve into the significance of the story as presented. What's the lowdown on the street? Find out!#hailcaesar!#joshbrolin#hollywood#fabulousfilmandfriendsNote: Actor Max Baker played the lead Communist in Hail Caesar! I mistakenly guessed his name was Mark Baker in the podcast. Either way, a fantastic performance.

Dierks Bentley eligió “If We Make It Through December”, que hace ya 47 años formó parte de Merle Haggard's Christmas Present (Something Old, Something New). This mix has already been recorded and re-recorded twice and has been going for about two years. It was originally created for sunsets and quiet evenings, when you can dim the lights, fill a glass of whiskey or wine, fall into a deep chair, smoke and relax. To be in a moment alone with yourself. The final version of the mix has been waiting for a year and it so happened that the time for it came yesterday, when I played this selection on our broadcast. Now I'm sharing this mix with you all. Enjoy listening! P.S.: You can see live playing this mix with beautiful view from Vladivostok, Russia - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3wgdDVnv5Y&t=3640s ___________________________________ Этот микс уже записывался и перезаписывался дважды и собирался уже около двух лет. Since their first album release in 2009, the Kenneth Brian Band’s modern Southern Rock and Americana infused style, timeless song-craft, layered with Kenneth’s gritty vocals and guitar prowess have helped earn them a loyal fan following and the respect of fellow musicians. The quartet’s musical styling and dynamic live performances also attracted the attention of some of their mentors like Lucinda Williams, Billy Gibbons and current bandmate Steve Ferrone of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Since 2013, they spent two years touring with multi-Grammy winner Lucinda Williams, who describes them as “somewhere between Lynyrd Skynyrd and Drive-By Trucker”, before joining ZZ Top in 2016 for several dates. Whether in intimate Honky Tonks or stately, sold-out theaters (with Lucinda), they continue to captivate audiences with resonating harmonies and a tight rhythm section.Their fourth studio album With Lions, released in May, includes 11 songs all written by Kenneth and pays tribute to their musical mentors as well as their musically rich Southern heritage. The single “You’re Not Mine” is an edgy anthem with heavy-hitting guitar solos and their signature harmonies. “Beautiful Storm” is an emotionally evocative track that showcases Kenneth’s spellbinding competency with a slide.Rock ‘n’ roll royalty Steve Ferrone (Drums, Tambourine, Shakers) and Scott Thurston (Keyboards, Piano) of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers don’t just lend their talents for the album but, Ferrone sits behind the drum kit when he’s not touring with Tom Petty. Travis and Steve met a couple of years ago at a gathering thrown by a mutual pal. Not long after, they needed a drummer for a Hollywood gig and Steve sat in with the band. He worked with the guys to hone their sound and helped them find the right players. And as they say, the rest is history.Handpicked by Steve, drummer Chris Cano plays with KBB when Ferrone is on the road with the Heartbreakers. Popular session bass guitarist and Disresputable Few member, Paul ILL, joined the band at Steve’s urging and perfectly rounded out the Kenneth Brian Band sound. “Those two were the perfect combination for what we do,” said Kenneth Brian. “Their influence has helped elevate our playing and just being around Steve is a master class on how to be a successful artist and a decent human being,” he continued. In true KBB form, the sound of the new album honors their distinctive blend of Southern Rock that is both progressive and rooted in tradition. While they both currently reside in Los Angeles, they hail from the South. Kenneth was born in Virginia but spent most of his formative years in Alabama before his family settled in a small town just north of Gainesville, Florida. Travis was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia and spent summers with his dad in Nashville. From a very young age, they realized their passion for creating music and have pursued it with vigor. Travis started on the piano and Kenneth penned his first country song on an old guitar at the ripe age of 4.After moving to Nashville in 2001, founding members Kenneth Brian (Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar) and Travis Stephens (Harmony Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Piano) met while playing the local scene and struck up a fast friendship, which led to a creative collaboration in 2009. And that comes before egos or opinions,” he said. With Lions, out May 19, 2017 on Robo Records, was recorded at Dave’s Room Studio in Hollywood, California. Hi-Res Symposium 2016 Representatives from Universal Music Group, The Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing and Sony Electronics met recently to underscore the variety of marketing and educational programs that are currently underway to promote the benefits of Hi- Res Audio devices, content and services to a broader audience. The event, which was sponsored by DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group was held at Capitol Studios in LA. It featured a number of speakers, presentations and demonstrations that were conducted by these organizations' representatives. A research study conducted by Music Watch and the Consumer Technology Association was presented at the symposium that showed that nearly 90% of 18 to 54 year olds want higher sound quality, and over 60% of them are willing to pay more for it. So there is a market for the content and further, the industry is willing to produce such content. Currently there are about 10,000 titles available from 12 online providers and more than 100 manufacturers offering hi-res capable devices. But the question is, how does the industry educate consumers about hi-res and convince them that the higher quality is something that they want to spend money for? Look for manufacturers and retailers to create Hi-Res listening centers within stores to demonstrate the difference. There are also new logos to identify Hi-Res content and players: So the question is why? From the point of view of the content creators it's all about more revenue. Likewise, manufacturers would like you to upgrade your equipment as well. We have discussed at length that we don't think Hi-Res is any better than CD so we won't go into it here. If you are interested we have a video that covers the topic analytically which is available on Youtube (https://youtu.be/8xotaf4aN_g). It's clear to us that the music industry is learning from the movie industry. Create a “Better” format and charge people a premium to buy their music again.   If you decide to go down the path to Hi-Res recordings consider a few things: Digital equipment today is better than when CDs first came out - This means that you may hear a difference in digital music that is remastered today. Don't confuse that with hi-res audio. Many songs in the early digital days were not necessarily mastered very well. Fixing those errors alone and putting it back on a CD will do more than simply taking the same master and adding bits.   Don't let your eyes do the listening - If you know that you are listening to a hi-res audio product there is a very good chance your eyes will tell your ears that they are hearing superior sounding audio. Double blind is the best way to test. If you can hear a difference then, congratulations! You are in the top 2%.   SACD sounds better and it's higher quality - From Wikipedia: In September 2007 the Audio Engineering Society published the results of a year-long trial, in which a range of subjects including professional recording engineers were asked to discern the difference between SACD and a compact disc audio (44.1 kHz/16 bit) conversion of the same source material under double blind test conditions. Out of 554 trials, there were 276 correct answers, a 49.8% success rate corresponding almost exactly to the 50% that would have been expected by chance guessing alone. If you hear a noticeable difference with SACD it may be due it being a 5.1 mix vs a 2 channel mix. Be careful not to draw the conclusion that it sounded better because of the higher bit and sample rates. Before you spend a lot of money setting up for Hi-Res audio do yourself a favor. Make sure you can hear a difference at home. You can buy a decent headphone DAC for about $250, then you'll need to allocate about another $250 for headphones but then you'll just be scratching the surface of the gear you will buy in the future. Do some serious A/B test on your own with no one pressuring you. ABX Shootout is a great SW package that can help you do this. If you don't want to spend at least $500 on gear to help you decide whether Hi-Res is worth it, then you may as well stay with what you have.
