I've had a number of guests on this show speaking about leadership. A large part of this is that I'm very interested in the subject. But I also feel that this is a skill set that is often neglected in the legal profession. As lawyers, we learn a lot about our craft in law school and even more once we are in practice. As professionals, we are taught to analyze the law and help our clients to identify legal risks. Our job is to be skeptical and to apply dispassionate reasoning to the situation so that our clients can protect themselves from legal exposure and comply with the law. We work to get our clients the best possible outcome whether it is in a litigation matter or in a corporate or real estate deal. We help our clients to achieve their personal or business objectives in a way that avoids legal risk or accomplishes their legal objectives. But the same skills that we cultivate in practicing law can interfere with our ability to be an effective leader. Whether you are a managing partner, a practice group leader, running your own law firm, serving as a general counsel, or managing other members of the legal team as an assistant general counsel, you need a different skill set to be successful. In particular, emotional intelligence is one skill that you need to cultivate in order to be successful in a leadership role. In this episode, Susan Schwartz provides great insights on that subject. Susan Schwartz is a leadership coach and management consultant. She equips technical experts and teams with the skills they need to become excellent leaders. Her tagline is : Transforming expert professionals into emotionally intelligent leaders. It is axiomatic that if you want to have a successful legal career, you need to learn your craft. Most areas of legal practice require highly refined analytical abilities coupled with good judgment. For the most part, the first developmental task of any new lawyer is to learn how to practice law. But if you want to advance in your career, you need to be more than a good technician. Demonstrating executive presence is also key. In this episode, I am pleased to introduce John Buckley, Board Secretary and General Counsel for the North Carolina operations of a multinational mobility infrastructure company. John talks about how building your executive presence is critical to advancing your career, especially if you want to want to take on leadership responsibilities. In a great conversation, John discusses what executive presence is, who needs it, and what it looks like. He offers his practical tips on how increase your own executive presence. Over the summer, I heard John give a great presentation on this topic for the American Bar Association and I decided I had to have him on the show. Lucky for me, he accepted my invitation right away. John Buckley has served 3 times as the first in-house counsel for start-ups. He has 15 years of solo/small law department General Counsel experience. He began his professional life as an engineer for Duke Power. Additional Resources Ted Lasso (

Shared mobility platform Bolt has revealed the extent to which its electric bike rental service has been used in its first year of operations in Sligo. Almost 6,000 unique users have taken 76,296 bike rides, equating to a staggering 153,741 kilometres ridden. This distance equals more than 370 round trips between Sligo and Dublin. Aside from these impressive numbers, further analysis of the data unpacks the interesting ways in which the service is being used. For example, the longest ride ridden was an almighty 47 kilometres. Not to be outdone; however, one user completed an unbelievable 530 trips in a year. It isn't just Sligo or Irish residents that are utilising the helpful service - it's proven a hit with tourists too. Almost 1000 of the 5,942 unique users had a phone number from overseas. Not only has the service been well received by citizens, the same is true of local businesses too. Bernadette Coffey, Sales & Marketing Manager at Sligo Park Hotel & Leisure Club: "There's nothing like hopping on a Bolt bike, whether to see the sights or for a quick spin around town. Bolt's service allows you to park up the car at Sligo Park and enjoy the rest of your holiday car-free if you wish. We're delighted that our visitors, holiday-makers and staff can take advantage of the offering." Bolt's aim is to offer a frictionless, comprehensive network that fits seamlessly into the lives of riders and pedestrians alike. Consequently, it engages with relevant groups - local authority active travel teams, councillors, residents, businesses, institutes such as universities - pre- and post-deployment of the bikes. The company is eager to continue to receive all forms of feedback at Ireland@bolt.eu. The data also reveals that traction with the service is particularly popular around public transport hubs, including near the train station. However, Bolt is constantly analysing usage in order to judge which parking locations are - or could be - helpful, as well as whether the amount of bikes deployed is relative to the level of demand. Sligo Councillor Marie Casserley said: "It's been such a positive partnership between Sligo County Council and Bolt and the statistics have proven that Sligo is ready to take the lead on a sustainable project such as this. Hopefully, many other local authorities will follow suit. It's equally as beneficial to locals as well as visitors, and this has to be a good thing for the community of Sligo." Bolt also offers its shared electric bike rental in Kilkenny, Wexford and Bray to a combined 12,000 users. They've taken 115,000 rides amounting to 238,000 kilometres. Bolt is in talks with several other councils keen to accelerate their active travel services in line with the National Development Plan and the Climate Action Plan. The company also offers taxis in Dublin and Cork. The recent launch of shared electric bikes in Bray in June made Bolt the first company to offer multiple transport modes (taxis and electric bikes) within the same app/ecosystem in Ireland. Bolt Operations Manager for Rentals in Ireland, John Buckley, said: "We're thrilled our electric bike service has been so embraced. We're lucky to have vast experience with micro-mobility across Europe. It constantly tells us that a high-quality, responsible service with affordable pricing will be popular with riders and pedestrians alike. The former gets a better alternative than traffic jams and maintenance costs, whilst the latter gets a city made for people, not private cars. I'm very happy to say Sligo has met and exceeded these expectations." The stats come hot on the heels of the European mobility leader announcing it has surpassed 150 million customers in over 45 countries and 500 cities, including more than 12 million using its micro-mobility (electric scooter and bike) services. Furthermore, Mikko Salovaara was named as CFO, with the company expecting to reach full company-wide profitability on a full net income basis over the next 12 months. More...

Bolt, the European mobility champion, is encouraging electric bike users to take extra precautions before mounting bikes this winter season as the traditional period of colder and unsettled weather kicks in over winter. Bolt currently operates two shared e-bike schemes in Ireland, Sligo having launched in June 2022 with 65 e-bikes and Kilkenny in August 2022 with 50 e-bikes. Users on the schemes have travelled a combined distance of over 100,000 km to date. Speaking on e-bike safety ahead of the current winter season, Operations Manager for Rentals for Bolt Ireland, John Buckley, said: “We have been overwhelmingly delighted with the uptake of our electric bike schemes in Sligo and Kilkenny to-date. Electric bikes and other forms of micromobility remain a viable alternative mode of transport for short to medium-length journeys year-round, but there are a few extra actions users can take to ensure maximum safety during the colder, and often wetter, winter months.” Electric Bike safety tips for winter Ahead of the winter months, John Buckley provided some tips for users to ensure safety while using electric bikes this winter. Bolt asks that people refrain from using e-bikes when under the influence of alcohol. If a user or friend fails the cognitive reaction test they will be unable to hire a bike and Bolt urges people to find an alternative mode of transport such as a taxi, public transport or walking if the distance isn't too far. For user safety and the safety of others, be responsible and do not take the cognitive reaction test on behalf of someone who is too intoxicated to use an electric bike. Electric Bike Maintenance To cycle safely in any weather, it's essential to maintain electric bikes properly. Maintenance usually means checking for a few simple things to prevent issues later down the line. Bolt's technical team regularly looks over all bikes to ensure they are safe to cycle. As a cyclist, it is still important to do a quick check before each cycle to ensure the brakes work, and that the wheels move smoothly. If anything appears broken or not working quite as it should, users can easily report it through the Bolt app. Tap the little warning sign in the electric bike section, report an issue, and Bolt's team will take care of it. Using Electric Bikes in the Rain and Cold Weather In typical winter weather, Bolt e-bikes are safe to cycle as they are built to be able to withstand rain. Users will still want to avoid extreme weather: torrential rain, high-standing water, and going to places with a danger of flooding. Besides dressing warmly — with special attention to keeping hands warm by wearing gloves — It is important to be on the lookout for ice during cold snaps. When temperatures fluctuate above and below freezing levels after rain or snowfall, black ice may form. Always avoid cycling on ice. Cold weather can also affect e-bike batteries shortening the range a bike can travel. Keep this in mind when planning a longer cycle. Here are Bolt's top tips on how to stay safe and comfortable riding an electric bike in rain and cold weather: Lower your speed. As the pavement can get slippy, lower speeds are safer. Wet tarmac provides less traction, so be extra mindful when turning. The Bolt app allows users to lower the maximum speed of the bike. Brake early. Less traction also means slightly longer stopping times. All Bolt bikes have front and rear brakes to ensure safety, even in the highly unlikely case that one of them should fail. Keep space between you and other road users so users can comfortably swerve or stop when needed to. Stay visible. Rain also means lower visibility. Wear reflective clothing or reflectors. Bolt bikes have front and rear lights and side reflectors. Dress for the occasion. Keep yourself warm and dry by choosing suitable clothing for the weather. Using Electric Bikes in the Dark The key to bike safety in low light conditions is increasing visibility. Stay aware of your surroundings. Keep an ey...

Today's guest, John Buckley, casts a long shadow over the world of vintage Rolex. He's a veteran of the New York watch scene who has seen trends come and hype go, which makes the fact that he's TikTok famous somewhat surprising. Buckley's TikTok's follow him on his visits to the dealers of 47th street and gives you a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing of watches far removed from the white glove service of the boutique environment. Gem-set Daytonas sit in plastic pouches, waiting to be plucked out by John, who will inevitably ask, “how much is this $60,000 watch.” We find out what John thinks about the watch market's state, why he's on TikTok and why a reality watch TV show might be coming to a streaming service near you. This episode is sponsored by G-Shock Australia. This week, in our retrospective exploration of the iconic model, we discuss the watch in the 2000s. Eminem, Bieber and all the other cool kids wear them. Stay tuned for more on the future of the digital icon, and discover more at G-Shock Australia. Artem straps! They're great. For the next few weeks. Our church is in a stewardship campaign. And it's not all about money. We are also talking about our stewardship of time, and how we use it to serve others, particularly those who really need help. Yesterday in our services here at the church, John Buckley, one of our members who is part of our Methodist Mens group spoke about our involvement and support of Parkview Mission. And I had the opportunity to record him for our online service that aired yesterday, and is still online btw. John is very committed to Parkview, and it was quite evident in his thoughts he shared. While I was editing, the song He Knows My Name came to me. It was, I believe, a reminder from God that regardless of who we are or where we are, He knows our names - he sees us when each tear falls. He knows because we are his children.

Bolt has announced it will launch its second electric bike scheme in Kilkenny ahead of the Kilkenny Arts Festival starting on August 4th. The 80-bike pilot will kick off in the coming week and will trial new virtual parking solutions to provide both flexibility and ease of use for cyclists and ensure the scheme is mindful of pedestrians and other road users. This service will help to deliver on the Kilkenny City and County Development Plan 2021 – 2027, which prioritises sustainable transport and continued development of walking and cycling infrastructure in support of the 10-minute city concept. Caitriona Corr, Cycling Officer with Kilkenny County Council, said, “We are delighted that people will have another choice of transport in Kilkenny. It has been shown that e-bike users cycle further and more often so the benefit will be not just to our city but also people's wellbeing. e-bikes can be of great assistance to people with reduced mobility and can make more arduous journeys very enjoyable.” Bolt has continued to strengthen its Irish team with the recent appointment of John Buckley as Operations Manager for Rentals in Ireland, who said, “Kilkenny is our second Irish market and one where we believe e-bikes can make a transformational difference to travel options and wellbeing. We are also conscious that Kilkenny is a medieval city and as such presents new challenges from an operational perspective. The learnings we will gather from Kilkenny will give Bolt a stronger understanding of the concerns some Local Authorities may have when it comes to introducing shared e-bike schemes into the public realm where space may be limited, and will leave Bolt as an experienced operator of such. Buckley added, “Electric bikes play an essential role in reducing the reliance on private vehicles when travelling short to medium distances. We are keen that our e-bikes provide sustainable and affordable solutions in regional towns and cities too — there is no reason that such services should only be available in the capital.” The launch marks Bolt's second e-bike launch after it launched in Sligo earlier this year. The Sligo pilot has proven highly successful in its first month with 14,633 kms travelled by electric bike in the town in the first month alone — the equivalent of cycling from Sligo to Australia. Bolt is a leading European mobility champion operating a range of services including e-bikes, eScooters, ride-hailing and car clubs for over 100 million people across 200 cities. The company currently operates ride-hailing taxi services in Dublin and Cork and is seeking to bring electric bikes, and in time, electric scooters to cities and towns across Ireland. The launch in Kilkenny comes as part of a wider push for Bolt to deploy 16,000 e-bikes across Europe in 2022, following recent fundraising. Bolt will commit up to €5m in its bid to roll out e-bike operations across Irish cities and towns. Up to 2000 bikes are available immediately following Bolt's recent fundraise and investment in micromobility with founder Markus Villig recently committing €150m to expand its light vehicle fleet across Europe. How to rent a Bolt e-bike To rent a Bolt e-bike, users need the Bolt app, available on app stores, and a payment card tied to an account. Follow these steps to start riding a Bolt e-bike: Open the app and tap on the e-bike icon to locate your closest bike; Scan the QR code on the bike to unlock it; Carefully read through the safety tips; When you're ready to roll, push off and go! Continuing Bolt's reputation of offering affordable micro-mobility service across continents, Bolt is the most affordable provider of shared electric bikes in Ireland, thanks to having low rates and no unlock fee. The per-minute rental price is the lowest on the market at just 0.15 EUR/minute during the launch campaign. Musician John Buckley McQuaid talks about his latest album 'This is Where I keep My Dreams' with Radio Espial's Mick Rooney. Born in Dublin and based in Denmark for many years, John Buckley McQuaid is a professional musician who has toured all over Europe, from pub and music venues to art museums, theatres, schools, prisons and festivals. In addition to writing songs, he writes lyrics and fairy tales. He is also a visual artist (photography, painting and illustration) and makes videos and short films. He played his first paid gig at the Foxrock Folk Club in Dublin in 1969, busked and played around Dublin until 1972 when he left for London. He moved to Denmark in 1973, where he turned professional musician in 1979. Much of his writing contains social commentary, challenging the prevalent general apathy. His albums over the years include: Recorded Pain (1979), Stations in the Sky (1985), and Call it Love (1990). In 2017, he also released ‘'Valentine's Day'', a 29 video and song ebook. His sixth album, “This Is Where I Keep My Dreams” released in 2021, is a collection of 12 original songs about Ireland, addressing such issues as the Magdalene Laundries, the Vulture Funds and the Irish Diaspora throughout the world, often dealing with aspects of Ireland's uncomfortable past. His latest single, ‘'Homeless Hotels'' was released on the 31st of January this year and is dedicated to the homeless and victims of abuse everywhere and Ireland in particular. This episode of the Futurum Tech Podcast - Interview Series is the ninth installment of our Intelligent Enterprise Industry Series — done in partnership with SAP. I welcomed Paul Larson and John Buckley, executive advisors for the consumer products industry at SAP to discuss how they are helping organizations focus on furthering their intelligent enterprise story. The Interconnected Consumer Products Company SAP recently partnered with Oxford Economics to conduct a research study to identify how an interconnected mindset impacts organizations. It also covers the industry's progress to date. Consumer products companies have made a lot of progress in digital transformation but still have several areas to work on including collaboration, data-sharing, and talent management. The report includes findings from 3,000 senior executives, including 300 from the consumer goods sector. My conversation with Paul and John revolved around the following: How the consumer products industry is doing in 2020 and the effects COVID-19 has had on companies. The different ways executives are using systems thinking to break down silos. How organizations within the consumer products industry are using an integrated approach to reduce costs and improve speed. The impact talent has had on companies looking to improve digital transformation initiatives. How companies are able to get the most out of their data. The technology investments consumer products companies are making to spur digital transformation. Paul, John and I explored some of the findings of the Oxford Economics report: The Interconnected Consumer Products Company that will have a big impact on the future. We only explored a few topics in the report and there's so much more to it. If you're interested in a comprehensive view of the subject download The Oxford Economics report here.

In this episode Blair speaks to expert Dr. John Buckley about how to detect, mitigate and manage insider threats. With decades of global experience across defence, intelligence and counter terrorism, John knows all too well what motivates and triggers internal threat actors – so much so he's written a book on it. John Buckley talks to Jack about Koch Industries and how they Create a sustainable military veteran recruiting and retention program to advance Koch Industries, Inc.'s long-term business strategies, including current demand and future talent needs Ultimately, attract, hire, integrate and retain well-qualified military veterans by: Leveraging mutually beneficial relationships; Increasing awareness of the program; Collaborating across all Koch companies; Improving consistency of effort and representation; Sharing best practices. Through education programs we have focused on closing the cultural and communication gap and as a result our retention rates have increased. Moreover, we are attracting even more veterans because our veteran employees are excited to refer their former battle-buddies and mates. Our communication effort also educates our non-veteran community on “life in the military service”, shares veterans success in Koch, and has resulted in a record number of ESGR recognition. Our Transition mentoring supported by our Transition Guide has proved to be very successful. Our tools are not only used by the job seekers, but also by our veteran mentors who use the tips and best practices. Also, our onboarding and internal mentoring programs are improving the retention rate of newly hired veterans.John_Buckley.mp3
In our second sermon in our summer psalm series, John Buckley takes us through Psalm 2 and helps us understand what the New Testament (and Jesus himself) means when referring to the title "Son of God". We look at the problem the Gospel addresses, the solution the Gospel announces, and the response which the Gospel requires.

In this episode, we talk to John Buckley, a lecturer in the English Department at the University of Michigan. John is a member of the lecturer’s union at U of M, the Lecturers’ Employee Organization (LEO), and was on the bargaining team throughout the effort to negotiate a better contract with the University in 2017/18. We talk about the precarious situation of so many academic workers and what it tells us about the state of higher education today. We also talk about John’s family history and about growing up in Michigan always feeling, as he puts it, “on the bubble.” We talk about our religious upbringings and we talk about being a theater geek and almost joining the military. We also talk about the winding road that took him to the West coast, teaching in different kinds of schools and programs, and that eventually led him back to his alma mater in Michigan.
