Meet Cassidy & Zeek!Cassidy and Zeek started their journey together in Florida. Cassidy's originally from Maryland but moved to Fort Myers in 8th grade. Zeek is a Florida native, born and raised in the Bonita Springs area. Three years ago, these two lovebirds packed up and moved to the Dominican Republic (DR) with the Christian Missionary Alliance, where they've been sharing their faith, connecting with locals, and building up communities ever since.Discovering the Dominican RepublicThe Dominican Republic's history is rich and layered, beginning as the first European colony in the Americas. Santo Domingo, its capital, was founded in 1496 and is recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the New World. This city became a critical base for Spanish exploration, and remnants of its colonial past remain in the cobblestone streets and preserved buildings of its Zona Colonial. Over the centuries, the DR has seen periods of Spanish, French, and Haitian rule, each leaving a distinct mark on its culture. The nation gained its independence in 1844, and since then, its resilient spirit has shaped a unique identity celebrated in its music, art, and traditions. Today, the Dominican Republic thrives as a vibrant blend of European, African, and Taíno influences, with a deep sense of pride in its cultural heritage and historical significance in the Caribbean. And if you love music, this is the birthplace of merengue and bachata—two energetic styles that will get you dancing in no time.What's the DR Really Like?When we asked Cassidy and Zeek how they'd sum up the DR in just three words, they said it's friendly, hot, and adventurous! For the ultimate tropical experience, head over between October and July. HolidaysTwo major holidays in the DR are Mother's Day and Black Friday because the Dominicans love to shop. If you happen to visit on these days, get your shopping in! If you are a Carnival fan, it usually occurs between February and April. The DR's primary religion is Catholicism so there are also many holidays centered around it.Must-Visit CitiesThe DR's capital city, the largest city, Santo Domingo, is a must-visit! Known as the oldest city in the New World, it's filled with colonial architecture and historical sites, including the first cathedral in the Americas, Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor. Check out the old fort walls in the colonial zone. For a taste of Santo Domingo, try the chocolate-making tour, where you can explore the history of the Cacao bean and the different percentages of chocolates, and you get to make your own chocolate bar. For a scenic stroll, walk on the Malecon oceanside walkway, where you can see the ocean, shop from local vendors, and enjoy live music. The city of Santiago de los Caballeros is another gem with a thriving cultural scene. It is a smaller city with friendlier people, and similar to Santo Domingo, it has mountains, beaches, and good food. Santo Domingo and Santiago are a 4-hour drive from each other. La Romana is known for its luxury resorts, golf courses, and the nearby Altos de Chavón, a recreated Mediterranean-style village.Outdoor Exploring Like a LocalBeaches: Punta Cana is famous for its resorts and beaches, which make it a top tourist destination. However, there are many less crowded beaches, such as Las Terrenas, Cabarete, and Puerto Plata, on the northern coast, and Juan Dolio on the southern coast. Las Terrenas is on the northeastern coast, and it is Cassidy and Zeek's favorite with its crystal clear water and perfect palm trees. Cabarete is a vibrant boho surfer beach. Playa Rincon and Bahia de Las Aguilas offer some of the most pristine beaches.Hiking: If you're up for an adventure, try canyoning at El Tabernaculo. This is a must-hike, and you can slide down mini waterfalls. This hike is only about 2 hours long. Another incredible hike is Venti siete Saltos at the Damajagua Waterfalls. Here you can hike a trail up to the top of the mountain and you can float down a river, jumping off 27 rock sections into the next water pool. You can also choose whether you want to do a beginner, intermediate, or expert trek. Salto de Jimenoa. Pico Duarte is the highest peak in the Caribbean, standing at 10,164 feet (3,098 meters). You can sign up for a guided camping trip up the mountain, and the views and natural beauty is stunning. What to PackBring your camera! Essentials to Pack: Don't forget the sunscreen, bug spray, and a good pair of hiking shoes if you want to explore beyond the beach!Where to Stay In Santo Domingo, The Embassy Suites is only $130 a night and is much more luxurious than embassy suites in the US. From here you can always have easy access to the happenings of the town such as shopping, events, music and food.Fun Culture Facts!Savoring the FlavorsCassidy and Zeek raved about the food, and we're here for it! Dominican cuisine is a blend of Spanish, African, and Taíno influences, with dishes like mangu (mashed plantains) and la bandera (a hearty plate of meat, rice, and beans). Some favorite Santo Domingo restaurants of Cassidy and Zeek include El Conuco, Osteria del Cappuccino, and La Tapa. Osteria del Cappuccino is an authentic Italian restaurant, and it is so tasty that it is endorsed by the Italian embassy! La Tapa has many options, great steaks, and excellent drinks. Keep in mind water is more expensive than liquor in the DR! El Conuco is a traditional Dominican restaurant located closer to the colonial district. El Conuco is a famous celebrity spot with the citations of Selena Gomez and Brad Pitt, and it hosts live merengue music in the evenings and weekends. Don't even get us started on the coffee—locally grown and deliciously rich, it's a must-try for every coffee lover. Their favorite coffee shop is The Greenhouse. A popular drink in the DR is a mochaccino. Be careful when ordering a Machiatto because, unlike Starbucks, it is an extremely concentrated expresso drink.Travel on Any Budget!The DR has options for every budget. I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Charges dropped against truth telling Pennsylvania street preacher Prosecutors have dropped charges against Damon Atkins, a Pennsylvanian street preacher, after he was arrested while reading from the Bible across from a homosexual pride event, reports The Christian Post. He was living out Romans 12:21 which says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” After a review of the arrest on June 3rd in the city of Reading, the Berks County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday that charges of disorderly conduct, filed against Atkins, were withdrawn. Video of the arrest went viral after Atkins, age 41, was taken into custody on absurd, trumped-up charges when he merely quoted a Bible verse to Reading Police Officer Bradley McClure. Donald Trump indicted on 7 counts over classified documents Former President Donald Trump has been indicted on seven federal criminal counts in connection with hundreds of classified government documents he retained at his Florida home after leaving the White House, reports CNBC. Trump himself disclosed the indictment in a series of posts on his Truth Social media site on Thursday evening. Dark horse GOP presidential candidate Doug Burgum On Wednesday, Republican North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, a successful businessman, announced his dark horse bid for the presidency, reports CBS News. After graduating from college in 1983, Burgum mortgaged his inherited farmland to invest in Great Plains Software which he sold in 2001 to Microsoft for $1.1 billion. He applied his business know-how to the state of North Dakota. BURGUM:  “We cut $1.7 billion in spending our first year in office. We cut red tape and streamlined services. We balanced the budget every year. We bolstered cybersecurity. We brought life back to our main streets. We made record investments in education, built infrastructure, unleashed energy production, and diversified the economy. “North Dakota is both growing and getting younger, one of the only states that's doing that. And we have the third lowest unemployment in the country and the highest workforce participation in the nation. (applause) “We achieved historic pension reform, helped pass term limits, and enacted the biggest tax cut in state history. (applause) We know we can do the same for America. “To unlock the best of America, we need a leader who's clearly focused on three things: Economy, energy, and national security. And that is why today I'm officially announcing I'm running for the president of the United States of America.” (applause) Pence touts conservatism and Constitution in presidential bid On the same day, from the early GOP primary state of Iowa, former Vice President Mike Pence threw his hat into the presidential ring, reports the Des Moines Register. He laid out his credentials as a conservative former Congressman and Governor from Indiana. PENCE: “What you may not know is I was also a congressman from Indiana for 12 years. I was a leader for House conservatives. We fought for life and liberty. I battled against big spenders in both political parties. I was a governor in Indiana where we cut taxes, as you heard from Speaker Houston. We achieved record employment, we expanded educational choice stood for the right to life, and the freedom of religion. “And as your vice president, I was proud to stand by President Donald Trump every single day when we made America great again. (applause) “Everything I am, everything I ever will be, I owe to my family, people of this country, and to Almighty God. I've long believed that to whom much is given, much will be required. That's why today, before God and my family, I'm announcing that I'm running for President of the United States of America.” (applause) Pence laid out his vision for America. PENCE: “We can defend our nation and secure our border.  We can revive our economy, put our nation back on a path to a balanced federal budget. We can defend our liberties and give America a new beginning for life. But it'll require new leadership in the White House and the Republican Party.” And Pence did not hesitate to address the events of January 6, 2021 when he chose to certify the 2020 presidential election results over the objections of Donald Trump. PENCE: “As I've said many times, on that fateful day, President Trump's words were reckless. They endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol. What the American people deserve to know is that on that day President Trump also demanded that I choose between him and the Constitution. Now, voters will be faced with the same choice. I chose the Constitution. And I always will.” (applause) YouTube will now allow posts questioning 2020 presidential election Speaking of elections, YouTube announced last Friday that it will allow content that challenges the results of past U.S. elections. Shortly after the 2020 presidential election, the Google-run video service said it would remove content that claimed voter fraud changed the election's outcome.  Now, YouTube is allowing such content. The company stated, “The ability to openly debate political ideas, even those that are controversial or based on disproven assumptions, is core to a functioning democratic society — especially in the midst of election season.” 1 Peter 2:16a says, “Live as people who are free.” Christian Missionary Alliance allows women in pastoral roles The Christian and Missionary Alliance, a denomination of over 2,000 churches with a statement of faith that aligns with the majority of Evangelical Christianity, voted last week to allow women to serve in pastoral roles, reports The Christian Post.  The change means that females may be ordained for pastoral roles with the exception of senior or lead pastor roles, which require male eldership. Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson died at 93 And finally, notable conservative Christian broadcaster and one-time presidential candidate Pat Robertson, widely known as the long-serving host of the popular Christian Broadcasting Network program "The 700 Club," has died. He was 93 years old. CBN News released a statement announcing Robertson died Thursday morning in his Virginia Beach, Virginia home. He was married to his wife Dede for 67 years until her death last year. In addition to writing 24 books, he ran for president in 1988 and founded the American Center for Law and Justice, the Christian Coalition, Regent University, Operation Blessing, and SuperBook, an animated series for kids about the Bible. Definitions: We're going to start with some helpful definitions. It's tricky to navigate the conversation around sexual misconduct. There's harassment, abuse, assault, grooming. It's hard to know what's what.Sexual Harassment: Sexual harassment includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature in the workplace or learning environment. Sexual harassment does not always have to be specifically about sexual behavior or directed at a specific person. For example, negative comments about women as a group may be a form of sexual harassment. Most victims and perpetrators know each other. Immediate reactions to sexual abuse include shock, fear or disbelief. Long-term symptoms include anxiety, fear or post-traumatic stress disorder. One need not look any further than the Catholic Priest scandals or Sovereign Grace and the Southern Baptist Convention in the Protestant world. Of course, our story is dealing with these issues in the Christian & Missionary Alliance tradition. But don't think your denomination is clean in all of this. I guarantee you won't need to look far to find these stories in your midst. These kinds of abuses are an issue in our churches, and until we start taking them seriously, nothing will change. Some groups have a denominational head that sets the policy and handles issues. Other churches are non-denominational, and it's up to them alone to hold themselves accountable. In either case, we know that policing yourself doesn't work and policies must speak to a transparent and rigid process that follows legal procedure. No more sweeping it under the rug. Every church should have a rigorous, industry standard policy to deal with issues of abuse and sexual misconduct.We aren't advocating for any of these policies, but want to provide churches and those attending with the information to make informed decisions. Some go into greater detail and do better than others, while others fall incredibly short. Some are wildly outdated, while others are keeping up with the times and have been renewed recently. Beware of ones that claim to be biblically based. While there's nothing wrong with basing a policy like this on scripture if its done right, it will all depend on who is interpreting the scripture and how it's implemented. Biblically based does not automatically mean more trustworthy.Have you ever looked at your churches policy on sexual misconduct and abuse? Maybe we all should. If we all knew the policy, we'd know whether it falls short or not and how to advocate for better. No one thinks it will happen to them. No one thinks it will happen in their space. How ready is your faith group to handle this when it happens? The following are policies from various larger denominations across Canada and the US. Take note of what's lacking. What's good. Compare it to policies in other spaces like the workplace and non-profits. If your church isn't taking it as seriously as your workplace, maybe it's time to speak up.
